ADORATION OF THE HOLY
CROSS/STAVROPROSKINISIS
On Sunday, April 3rd, the Church celebrates the Adoration of the Holy Cross. It
is the midpoint of Lent and the Church in her
wisdom gives us the cross as a reminder
and a the strength to continue to pursue the
Lenten season with faith by fasting, praying
and good works. Everyone is encouraged
to be present on April 3rd for this wonderful
feast day of our Church.
METROPOLITAN TO VISIT
On Sunday, April 3rd, His Eminence, Metropolitan EVANGELOS of New Jersey will
visit our parish and lead in the celebration of
the Divine Liturgy. Following the Divine Liturgy, he will march in the Greek Independence Day Parade and offer his blessings
and words at the parade.
GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY
PARADE
Keep in mind the Parade this year is Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. The parade
needs your support. You can make a donation to help support the parade. If you are
interested in helping in some way with the
parade come to the next meeting on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
CHANGES IN HOLY WEEK
PROGRAM
Please look at the Holy Week/Easter
schedule carefully, because there are some
changes. Those times with an asterisk (*)
are a change in time or procedure from the
past. Please note that Holy Unction can
only be given during the Service an can no
longer be taken home, but must be administered by a Priest, just as Holy Communion
is only to be given by the Priest. If there is
anyone who cannot make to Holy Unction
on Holy Wednesday evening, you may
come at another time and receive Holy Unction, but it must be by the hand of a Priest in
order to receive the full benefit and effect of
the sacrament.
In addition there will no longer be drive-thru
Communion on Holy Thursday Morning and
Holy Saturday Morning. Holy Communion
must be given to you during the Divine Liturgy and you must attend the Liturgy in order to receive Holy Communion. Please
check the times for Holy Communion.
There are over ten (10) opportunities to receive Holy Communion during Holy Week
and Easter. I wish you all a blessed Holy
Week and Easter.
Fr. Manuel
PHILOPTOCHOS
On behalf of the board and members of
Philoptochos, we would like to extend our
deepest sympathy to Mike Angelou and the
Angelou family on the passing of our beloved sister, Lela Angelou. Mrs. Angelou
served on the Philoptochos board and held
many functions at her home to benefit
Philoptochos. Mrs. Angelou also originated
the annual Philoptochos Tea. She will not
only be missed by Philoptochos, but by the
entire community. May her memory be eternal! Thank you to everyone who donated to,
helped with and supported our annual
Apokriatiko Glendi. Philoptochos is sponsoring a trip to Lancaster, PA to see the
Sights and Sound presentation of “Behold
the Lamb.” Lunch and shopping is included.
Tickets are still available. For information
please contact Nora Kefalas at 410-6612853. Again this year we will be selling
Tsourekia on Palm Sunday, April 24. If you
wish to place an order, please contact any
Philoptochos board member. On Friday,
April 29, we will be decorating the Epitaphio.
Everyone is welcome to come and help.

MAY HER MEMORY BE
ETERNAL
The Community of St. Nicholas is saddened
by the untimely and very quick passing
away of Helen Lela Angelou. Lela worked
diligently and tirelessly to promote the
Greek culture through dance. She is a cofounder of the Hellenic Golden Coins and
the PanHellenics and assisted greatly to inspire the young men as Evzones for the
Greek Independence Day Parade. Her
dedication and love for our Church will always be remembered. She will be greatly
missed by those who knew her and loved
her dearly. May her memory be eternal and
may God grant her husband Mike and the
other family members much comfort and
strength in their time of loss.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
SPAGHETTI LUNCHEON
The Sunday School will sponsor their annual spaghetti luncheon on Sunday, April
10th after Church Services. Your support
is greatly needed and appreciated. The
Sunday School staff works hard as volun-
teers to assist in the education of our children about our faith. Please support them
so that the good work of the Sunday School
can continue. Thank you.
AKATHIST HYMN
All the Salutations of the Theotokos will be
chanted on Friday, April 15th beginning at 7
p.m. You are reminded to come and pray
with us on that evening as we honor the
Theotokos for her role in our salvation and
her motherly way of protecting all of us from
danger and strife. She can help us during
many difficult times and situations and attending the services is a wonderful way to
thank her for her help in your life personally.

send in the names of your departed family
members and friends anytime between
Palm Sunday and Good Friday. The names
are read again on Holy Saturday morning
during the Divine Liturgy of the First Resurrection service. Please write your names
clearly and legibly.EPITAFIOS FLOWERS/

Donations can also be made for Easter Lilies for Easter and other opportunities during
Holy Week. Please speak to Fr. Manuel directly. [See form on page 7.]
FIREWORKS
WARNING
The Church of St. Nicholas does not sponsor nor encourage nor promote the use of
fireworks during the Resurrection services
of Easter. The Church does not have any
affiliation with those who choose to use fireworks. Please do not use fireworks near St.
Nicholas Church at the Resurrection Service without proper permits. Please know
that the police will be issuing tickets and
fines to those who violate this city ordinance. The Church is not responsible for
the use of fireworks, however we are concerned about the safety of each of our attendees at the Resurrection Service. Personal property is the responsibility of each
individual.
STEWARDSHIP PRIORITY
QUESTIONS
Where does my giving to the Church belong? Do I consider it a matter of mere
choice? Do I think of it as something obligatory? Is it merely a personal preference? Or
do I look upon it as privilege and responsibility? When I plan my budget, where do I
place my giving to the Church? Do I place it
first because the responsibility is laid on my
heart, or do I place it last, after I have discovered if anything is still available? Is my
giving to the Church proportionate giving?
Do I related my giving to the Church to what
I spend on pleasure and comforts and luxuries and even necessities? Is my giving
haphazard? Does it belong in the category
of leftovers? Have I found a rightful place
for stewardship in my life? Do I treat my giving carelessly or do I treat it as thoughtfully
as I want God to treat me? The prophets
remind us that we are not to offer to the
Lord our God that which has cost us nothing. Make your pledge today to the Church.
Or, if you can, increase your ability of giving
to the Church. The benefits are eternal.
Thank you.
FESTIVAL NEWS
There is great news about the Festival.
First, the dates of the Festival are Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, June 10, 11, and 12,
2005 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mark your
calendars.
We want to thank Mr. George
Papademetriou for assuming the task as
Festival Chairperson this year and also to
the co chairs: Maria Nicolaides, George
Stamoulis, Eleni Kostalas and John
Chrisomallis. They will all need our love and
support to work hard in the next two months
to make our festival once again a great success.
Everyone is to find their place in helping with
the Festival. New people are needed to
become more involved and assist in volunteering to help for the Festival. Our festival
has become one of the most successful ethnic events in Baltimore. Stop by the Church

Thank you.

LENT REFLECTIONS - ™À§§O°π™ªOπ ª∂°. ™∞ƒ∞∫O™∆∏™
EDITORIAL REFLECTIONS—
GREAT AND HOLY LENT
The long-awaited month of April invigorates
all of us as we welcome Spring; when the
cold, darker days of winter have given way
to brighter, warmer ones. Once again, we
see plants and animals which have lain dormant miraculously springing to life.
Just as nature prepares to rejuvenate the
earth, so too, Spring ushers in the Great
Holy Lent: the time for repenting and replenishing our spirit in preparation for Holy
Easter, the Resurrection of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. During this period we
are to be more focused on the teachings of
our Church fathers and the personal meaning of our Faith.
To aid us in our spiritual preparation for Easter and to reinvigorate us, the Church beacons us to many valuable and uplifting services. Each service enables us to concentrate on our spiritual growth and our personal relationship to God. Prayer, abstinence from certain foods, and being ever
mindful of our behavior and actions all help
in reminding us that we are readying for the
solemn week of our Lord’s Passion and His
Resurrection.
When we have participated, earnestly and
sincerely, in the inspiring services and
teachings of the Church during Lent, our
Easter celebration becomes brighter, more
joyful and meaningful.
The staff of the Pharos wishes
everyone a Blessed Easter!
