Roma, 16 maggio 2011 – Un “bosco tessile” in fibra naturale sospeso tra le pareti all’estremità della Galleria 2
del MAXXI, al primo piano, dove gli spazi progettati da Zaha Hadid si concludono in una piano inclinato.
E’ l’installazione The Stolen Paradise dello studio di architettura olandese West 8, secondo appuntamento
della serie NATURE, mostra articolata in quattro installazioni successive con cui il MAXXI Architettura
esplora un approccio inedito al tema delle esposizioni monografiche.
“L’incursione nell’opera dello Studio West 8 – dice Margherita Guccione, Direttore MAXXI Architettura - ci
restituisce una dinamica interpretazione del tema che unisce le 4 installazioni di NATURE, alla ricerca – se
esiste – di un filo conduttore che leghi le diverse accezioni del progetto contemporaneo”.
Dopo il lavoro di Francesco Venezia, che indagava il confine sottile tra il contesto determinato dalla natura e
quello disegnato dall’uomo, è la volta di West 8, la cui installazione, a cura di Alessandro D’Onofrio, sarà
visibile dal 20 maggio al 21 agosto 2011.
Il loro progetto è stato ispirato dalla qualità dei lucernari del museo. La luce viene catturata e modellata con
sagome bianche di alberi trasparenti, la cui ombra, le stratificazioni e il delicato movimento creano
un'atmosfera fantastica. Una installazione leggera e sensuale che dialoga con i ceppi di albero in acciaio nella
piazza del museo. Come tutti i progetti scelti per NATURE anche il progetto di West 8 riflette uno spirito di
narrazione poetica, e la naturale tendenza dell’uomo a una natura “ricreata”, sottolineata anche dalla presenza
in mostra di modelli, manifesti fumettistici, disegni. La mostra è stata realizzata con il sostegno dell’Ambasciata
d’Olanda a Roma.
NATURE non è una serie di antologie individuali ma un programma pensato per creare un dialogo tra il museo
e alcune delle figure più interessanti dell’architettura contemporanea italiana e internazionale. Una esposizione
“in quattro tempi” in cui i progettisti sono chiamati ad affrontare lo stesso tema e a confrontarsi con lo spazio
del museo. I loro lavori sono capitoli successivi dello stesso racconto, o meglio l’immagine dinamica e
molteplice del progetto contemporaneo.
Il tema NATURE è stato scelto non solo per l’attualità della parola-concetto, ma anche come minimo comun
denominatore dei quattro autori coinvolti (Francesco Venezia, West 8, Alberto Campo Baeza e UN Studio),
da sempre impegnati ad esplorare il rapporto tra natura e artificio.
Nelle singole installazioni gli architetti avranno la possibilità di realizzare uno spazio specifico, capace di
rappresentare loro stessi e il loro rapporto col tema NATURE, e di esporre uno o più progetti della loro
produzione incentrati su questo tema.
Le ultime due tappe della mostra NATURE avranno come protagonisti Alberto Campo Baeza, architetto
madrileno autore di progetti di case e luoghi collettivi tesi alla ricerca di un rapporto esclusivo con il paesaggio
e la luce del Mediterraneo e UN Studio di Amsterdam - Ben Van Berkel e Caroline Bos - esponenti eccelsi di
una tendenza che si muove con circospezione sul margine sottile tra natura, tecnologia e scienza.

Rome, 10 May 2011 – A “textile forest” in natural fibre suspended between the end walls of MAXXI’s Gallery 2,
on the first floor where the spaces designed by Zaha Hadid are enclosed by an inclined plane.
This is the installation The Stolen Paradise by the Dutch architectural studio West 8, the second event in the
NATURE series, an exhibition divided into four sequential installations through which MAXXI Architecture
is exploring an innovative approach to the theme of monographic exhibitions.
“This overview of the work of Studio West 8”, says Margherita Guccione, director of MAXXI Architecture,
“provides us with a dynamic interpretation of the theme linking the four NATURE installations, in search of,
should it exist, a common thread running through the diverse manifestations of contemporary design.”
Following the work by Francesco Venezia, who investigated the thin boundary between the context determined
by nature and that designed by man, it is now the turn of West 8, whose installation, curated by Alessandro
D’Onofrio, may be visited from 20 May through to 21 August 2011.
The group’s design was inspired the quality of the museum’s skylights. Light is captured and modelled with the
white shapes of transparent trees, whose shadow, stratifications and delicate movements create a fantastical
atmosphere. A light, sensuous installation that dialogues with the steel tree stumps in the museum piazza. As
with all the designs selected for NATURE the West 8 project also reflects a spirit of poetic narration and the
natural man’s attraction to a “recreated” nature, also emphasised by the presence in the exhibition of models,
comic-like posters and drawings.
NATURE is not a series of individual anthological shows but rather a programme designed to create a dialogue
between the museum and a number of the most interesting figures in Italian and international contemporary
architecture. A “four-stage exhibition” in which the designers have been asked to tackle the same theme and to
confront one another in sequence within a single museum space. Their works are therefore configured as
successive chapters of the same story, or rather as a dynamic and multiple image of contemporary design.
The theme NATURE has been chosen not only due to the currency of the word/concept, but also as a lowest
common denominator among the four designers involved (Francesco Venezia, West 8, Alberto Campo
Baeza and UN Studio) who have always been committed to the exploration of the relationship between nature
and artifice.
In the individual installations, the four architects will have the opportunity to create a specific space, capable of
representing themselves and their relationship with the theme NATURE and to exhibit one or more of their
projects with a focus on the theme.
The last two stages of the NATURE exhibitions will feature Alberto Campo Baeza, an architect from Madrid
responsible for houses and designs for public spaces focusing on an exclusive relationship with the
Mediterranean landscape and light, and UN STUDIO of Amsterdam – Ben Van Berkel and Caroline Bos –
leading exponents of a circumspect trend active on the subtle border between nature, technology and science.
