YET AND ALREADY
YET
E’ usato nelle frasi interrogative e interrogative-negative. In questi casi significa
già. E’ inoltre usato nelle frasi negative con il significato di non ancora (not yet).
Have you had a shower yet?
Hai già fatto la doccia?
I haven’t seen it yet.
Non l’ho ancora visto.
Yet dice che qualcosa è nel futuro, non nel presente o nel passato. E’ qualcosa che
stiamo aspettando.
Has Sally arrived? Not yet.
E’ arrivata Sally? Non ancora.
The postman hasn’t come yet.
Il postino non è ancora passato.
ALREADY
E’ usato nelle frasi affermative e significa già. Already dice che qualcosa è nel
presente o nel passato ma non nel futuro. Qualche volta significa che qualcosa è
già avvenuto anche prima di quanto ci aspettassimo.
When is Sally going to come?
Quando arriva Sally?
She’s already here.
E’ già qui.
You must go to Scotland.
Devi andare in Scozia.
I’ve already been there.
Ci sono gia’ stato.
In frasi interrogative already significa di già ed esprime di solito sorpresa. In
questo caso è posto generalmente in fine di frase.
Oh, have you got up already? You usually sleep till 10.
Oh, ti sei già alzato? Di solito dormi fino alle 10.
POSIZIONE
Already si pone tra il soggetto e il verbo.
He’s already gone.
When I was fourteen I already knew I wanted to be a doctor.
Yet di solito va alla fine della frase.
She hasn’t gone yet.
I have’t done the shopping yet.
TEMPI
Usualmente si usano yet e already con il present perfect:
She hasn’t gone yet.
I’ve already forgotten.
