MARIATERESA LETTIERI graduated in chemistry at University of Salerno in 1996. She received a PhD
in Materials Engineering from University of Salento in 2005.
She is a research scientist for the Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage (Lecce division) of
Italian National Research Council, where she has been working since 1998 and currently she is the scientific
coordinator of the Laboratory of Archaeometry, Diagnostics and Conservation: Chemical Analyses.
She took seminars on technologies and materials for restoration and she is co-supervisor in several thesis
for degrees in the field of conservation of Cultural Heritage.
She is referee for the international journals “Journal of Applied Polymer Science”, “Journal of Materials in
Civil Engineering”, and “Journal of Nanoengineering and Nanosystems”.
Research interests
- Evaluation of effectiveness and harmlessness of conservative treatments for stone materials by means of
laboratory tests and in situ tests and monitoring;
- Titania-based self-cleaning products for applications on stone materials;
- Characterization of surface finishes on historic buildings;
- Epoxy resins cured at low temperature and fiber-reinforced polymer composites for restoration of historic
buildings: evaluation of physical properties and durability;
- Thermal, thermogravimetric and spectroscopic FT-IR analyses for cure monitoring of thermosetting resins
and evaluation of natural and accelerated weathering;
- Evaluation of physical properties of nanocomposites hybrid adhesives for structural consolidation;
- Chemical-physical investigations to study the decay processes and effects of stone materials;
- FT-IR spectroscopy for the characterization of natural and artificial stone materials and their decay byproducts;
- Residue analysis on archaeological pottery.
