Press Release 2009 REPORT - THE MARKET AND THE CINEMA INDUSTRY IN ITALY For the first time in history the demographic balance of companies has reached a negative point. In 2009 the number of active companies was 9,900, however, the number of companies which were closed down totalled 819 (770 in 2008 and 733 in 2007). As a result joint-stock companies have become the majority within the cinema sector. The number of Italian films produced in 2009 amounted to 131, a drop of 14.9% in comparison to the 154 films produced in 2008, on the other hand, cinema takings have increased by the same percentage amounting to 623.4 million euro. The number of films produced thanks to the contributions of Italian funding or FUS (Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo) has passed, in one year, from 41 films to 26 (-36.6%), whilst the total amount of economic resources for the cinema has been halved (-50.4%). The total number of cinema employees and personnel registered with 'Enpals' amounts to 77,563 individuals. The overall annual earnings of the sector is almost 1 billion euro (938 million). The cinema industry of Rome consists of 40% of the national total and generates over 60% of the income from employment. The Italian Film Commission invested 8.5 million euro in 2009 for audio-visual productions. Rome, 26th May 2010. Today the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo presented its "2009 Report. The Report sheds light on the various companies within the sector and, for the first time, is presented with two previously unpublished appendixes. The first concerns the operation and role carried out by the Italian Film Commission in all of Italy; the second traces the history of Cinecittà up until its merger with the 'Istituto Luce'. On the occasion of the presentation of the Report, following the opening greetings by the Dean of Political Science at LUISS Guido Carli University, Sebastiano Maffettone, there will be contributions by the President of the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo, Dario E. Viganò; the Director General for Cinema of Mibac, Nicola Borrelli; the D.A. of Cinecittà Luce, Luciano Sovena; the film critic from Corriere della Sera, Paolo Mereghetti; the Director of the LUISS Writing School, Roberto Coltroneo; the Director of the "Massimo Baldini" Centre for Media and Communication Studies, LUISS Guido Carli University, Michele Sorice, and the scientific curator of the Report, Redento Mori.
