“A Est d’Europa. <7 TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 | FORMS OF RESISTANCE | The thirteenth edition of the ‘Tertio Millennio’ Film Fest returns to offer several reflections on the relationship between cinema and modernity, attempting to propose directions, provide materials for reflection and offer an occasion for the exchange and elaboration of ideas. This year the decision has been to concentrate on the special connections between aesthetics and politics, stylistic choice and historical operativeness. ‘Forms of Resistance’ is the title under which will be presented the preview titles along with two diverse programmes, and under which the convention will also articulate its two half days of involvement. “Eastern Europe. Forms of a Change” gathers together certain of the best authors of documentary cinema from the former Soviet republics, primarily originating from Russia shortly before the disintegration and eventual collapse of the Soviet empire. Each documentary maker successively dedicated themselves to the cinema as an area of aesthetic research and, simultaneously, as a possible location for the formulation of a critical discourse. Dvortsevoy, Kirtadze, Loznitsa, and Stonys through their work represent a distinct and specific paradigm in which linguistic choices and cinema forms are precisely, at the same time, aesthetic engagements and interventions in the world. What remains implicit yet non-univocal are the figures which distinguish a method of making cinema which is permanently aimed at the interrogation of events and things, but is, at the same time, strongly informed by the indetermination of the unknowable. From the film montage Revue to the observational documentary In the Dark, from the narrative inquest The Pipeline Next Door to the poetic Harbour the selected filmography exhausts a major part of the spectrum of documentary cinema, demonstrating once more the wealth of aesthetic and expressive resources available to the most accomplished documentary makers. Within the same programme is a homage to the German director Thomas Heise, director of cinema, theatre and television who has dedicated his entire film output to the documentation and setting of the German Democratic Republic (DDR), from the end of the 1970s until the collapse of the Berlin Wall, returning with Material, last winter, in order to return to material produced during the last years of the communist regime. Following a similar trajectory is “Focus Iran”, with the screening of certain films originating from one of the world’s regions which, more today than ever, demonstrates an urgency for change and the necessity for finding the resources to obtain it. Film productions (Heiran) and documentaries (We’ll Get Used to It) together reveal the multifarious and disparate aspects of a society with a tumultuous present, involving a dramatic bid for renewal, driven by the desire for the freedom of speech, creation and change, and, more sinisterly, the preservation of the status quo. The cinema, therefore, as an instrument of conscience and emotion, of interrogation and the construction of meaning, thought and rebirth. The convention which this year officially opens the festival will gather together academics, cinema experts and authors around the theme of “History after Cinema. Perception, sense, action in the world viewed”. Dario Edoardo Viganò | Presidente Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo Un ringraziamento particolare a | Special Thanks: Warner Bros. In the course of the First World War, the soldiers of General Leone, after conquering a hilltop considered strategically essential and resulting in the loss of 3000 men, are ordered to abandon the site. Then, the orders are changed and yet again they are requested to re-conquer the hilltop from the enemy. The Austrians, however, are by now firmly established and assiduously defend the site with two machine-gun posts. Despite being protected by heavy artillery, however, the military assaults remain ineffective and each one results in heavy losses on the part of the attacking troops. Tired of being continually sent into massacre by a general considered as much incompetent as absurdly exalted, a section of the troops stages a protest: in response General Leone orders their decimation. Condemned to either kill or be killed by men in the same situation, victims of the same monstrous war machine, the Italian soldiers, mainly rural peasants and farm workers, put their trust in the few officials – such as lieutenants Ottolenghi and Sassu – who judge this and, indeed, all other wars, as useless slaughter. Despite this, however, the former dies in an attempt to halt the massacre of his men whereas Sassu is condemned to death by firing squad for opposing an iniquitous order by one of his superiors. Carlo Mascolo, a missionary priest in Africa, is struck by a profound crisis of faith and existence. Returning to Rome, following suggestions made by his superiors, Carlo decides to take time off in order to reflect and refind the warmth of his family in a search to overcome the problem. In spite of this, his return is to involve bitter surprises, given that he finds himself trapped within a schizophrenic society which is absolutely devoid of human relationships, with his family – his father Alberto, brother Luigi and sister Beatrice, each obsessed with themselves and seeming to ignore Carlo’s problems. Then, one day in the already complicated lives of the Mascolo family, suddenly enters Lara, an untypical tourist guide, beautiful and from a complicated lifestyle which, after the initial hostility, is to help Carlo and his family rediscover family harmony. con/with: Carlo Verdone, Laura Chiatti, Anna Bonaiuto, Angela Finocchiaro, Marco Giallini e Sergio Fiorentini TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 (commedia/comedy; 2009, Italia - 145’) DI | BY CARLO VERDONE Prod. & Distrib.: Warner Bros. Biography - Born in East Berlin in 1955. From a very early age Heise worked as a printing apprentice, a profession which, by the director’s own admission, amounted to a case of social failure during those years in the DDR. At that time he frequented the Potsdam Babelsberg Academy of Film and Television and, following his diploma in 1983, produced his first documentary made entirely with materials found on the black market. The same year he began to alternate his activities between documentary making and the theatre and radio, however, up until 1989 all of his works were censured, confiscated or destroyed being considered not in line with the dictates of the DDR. All of this changed, however, in the 1990s when both national and international critics became interested in his work considering him one of the most important German documentary makers alive. In the same period he began a fruitful collaboration with the celebrated German dramatist Heiner Muller and also began to attend classes at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. The mannequins, redefined according to the regime’s law, have become a metaphor for Iranian women’s veiled and covered bodies. In the 1980’s the mannequins disappeared from shop windows altogether, reappearing only after the war between Iran and Iraq. First the male mannequins reappeared, followed by the female mannequins, modified by the manufacturers in order to minimize the feminine characteristics, like a warning call sent to Iranian women and society, an absurd totem intended to perpetuate the established order. | FORMS OF RESISTANCE | TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 FOCUS IRAN | ALTRE STORIE IRAN FOCUS | OTHER STORIES < 53 WE’LL GET USED TO IT (ADAT MIKONIM) | DI | BY MOHSEN OSTAD ALI MAKHMALBAF Sceneggiatura | Screenplay: Mohsen Ostad Ali Makhmalbaf Fotografia | Cinematography: Reza Sameni TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 Montaggio | Editing: Babak Heidari Musica/Music: brani di Simin Ghanem 54 > Suono/Sound: Shahin Poor Dadashi | SINOSSI | | SYNOPSIS | Prod.: Mohsen Ostad Ali Makhmalbaf Yeganeh, Hanieh, Shahnaz, Farzaneh e Behnaz hanno avuto problemi con la famiglia e sono fuggite di casa. As the Taliban moved into Afghanistan following the withdrawal of the Soviets, many Afghanis were displaced and fled to surrounding countries. One of these countries was Iran. In My Little Country, documentary filmmaker Abbas Mohammadi enters the classrooms of socalled autonomous schools, started in 1981 by Afghanis without permits or funds from the host government as a means of furnishing refugee students with a sense of belonging in a country not their own. Although the diplomas are not accepted for higher education in Iran, they are honored in Afghanistan - along with the hope of repatriation. | FORMS OF RESISTANCE | TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 FOCUS IRAN | ALTRE STORIE IRAN FOCUS | OTHER STORIES < 57 FOCUS IRAN | ALTRE STORIE IRAN FOCUS | OTHER STORIES REGISTI | DIRECTORS REGISTI | DIRECTORS SHALIZEH AREFPOUR Biografia - Nata a Teheran nel 1970. Biography - Director and screenwriter. At an early age Émond founded, together with several others, the “Video Intervention Group” and throughout the 1970s collaborated in numerous independent productions. After graduating in anthropology he decided to transfer to the arctic regions of Canada for a number of years where he began working for local television discovering new Inuit talent for television stations. At the beginning of the 1990s he became interested in documentary and produced Ceux qui ont le pas léger meurent sans laisser de traces (1992) a homage to an unknown worker who loses his life in the periphery of urban Montreal. This short feature film received the “André Leroux” Prize from the Québec Film Critics Association (AQCC) for best documentary. In 1994 he made L’instant et la patience (1994) filmed in the nursing home where he saw his own mother die, followed, a year later, by La terre des autres (1995) in which he attempted to convey parallels between the situation in Palestine and the situation of native Canadians. In 1997 he produced L’épreuve du feu which portrays the desperation of the victims of house fires, a documentary which was awarded two prizes by the AQCC. In 2000 he produced his last documentary Le temps et le lieu concerning the disappearance of rural traditions before passing on to full length feature films with La femme qui boit which signalled the start of his intense artistic association with the actress Elise Guilbault. Émond’s first film, and similarly his successive feature film 20h17 rue Darling (2003) were both chosen at the International Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2005 the Cinémateque of Quebec dedicated a retrospective study to Bernard Émond and, furthermore, it was in this period that the director’s attention to human fragility and the spirit of redemption found in his film characters came to be most pronounced. Indeed, it was in this period that he began work on a trilogy centred around the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity originating from La neuvaine (2005). This film was awarded the AQCC Prize for best Canadian film and also won the Ecumenical Film Jury Award at the International Film Festival of Locarno, Switzerland also gaining the Silver Leopard Award for the main character, Patrick Dolet, for best male actor. In the autumn of 2006 he began filming the second part of the trilogy Contre toute espérance which was again presented at the International Film Festival of Locarno. In 2009 he directed La donation which was awarded the Junior Jury Prize at the Locarno Festival. In the meantime, in 2008, Emond wrote Ce qu’il faut pour vivre which was made into a film by Benoît Pilon and won the Genie Award of the Canadian Academy for best screenplay. On the river bank, however, she meets François, who had been there to pray for his gravely ill grandmother. Francois manages to stop Jeanne from carrying out such a mindless act. SYNOPSIS A female doctor Jeanne Dion arrives in the village of Normétal, within the mineral-rich regions of Abitibi in the north of Quebec, in order to temporarily substitute Dr. Rainville, the elderly local physician. At the beginning such an environment proves difficult for Dr. Dion resulting from the closed and diffident character of the local people, however, following the death of Rainville, Jeanne begins to seriously consider the idea of remaining in Normétal. SYNOPSIS One night a patrol of police officers arrests a woman whilst she is leaving a hunting rifle outside the façade of an important manor house in Westmount. In spite of the pressing interrogation carried out by the police commissioner, the woman, who is called Réjeanne, is clearly in a state of shock and is incapable of uttering a single word, much less explain why her hands are covered in blood. Shortly afterwards, however, the dead body of her husband Gilles, killed by bullet wounds, is found in her flat in Rosemont and the police commissioner manages to reconstruct the events leading up to such a murder. After having worked for twenty years as a telephone operator in a large multinational firm, Réjeanne, along with a thousand other workers, finds herself without a job. Her personal situation is made even graver by the fact that her husband Gilles had previously suffered a serious heart attack which had severely limited both his motor and mental capabilities thereby rendering him incapable of working. In order to assist her love Réjeanne had had to sell her house in the countryside of Quebec, which had cost innumerable sacrifices, along with everything else that she owned, transferring themselves to a small flat in the city and accepting the lowest and most poorly paid jobs on offer. In spite of such sacrifices, however, nothing impedes Gilles from constantly isolating himself, arriving at the point where he simply stops speaking to her until one day something inside Réjeanne finally breaks down… 64 > RETROSPETTIVA | BERNARD ÉMOND BERNARD ÉMOND | IN RETROSPECT TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 RETROSPETTIVA | BERNARD ÉMOND BERNARD ÉMOND | IN RETROSPECT < 65 TERTIO MILLENNIO FILM FEST | 2009 INDICE | INDEX | FORMS OF RESISTANCE | 4 Lo Staff 32 | 33 Harbour | di Audrius Stonys 6 Programma delle proiezioni 34 | 35 Earth of the Blind | di Audrius Stonys Introduzione 36 | 37 The Bell | di Audrius Stonys ANTEPRIME 38 | 39 7|8 60 RdC | AWARDS 61 RETROSPETTIVA BERNARD ÉMOND Cosmic Station | di Bettina Timm 62 Bernard Émond | Biografia OMAGGIO A THOMAS HEISE 63 La neuvaine | di Bernard Émond 10 | 11 Donne senza uomini | di Shirin Neshat 12 | 13 Lourdes | di Jessica Hausner 40 | 41 Material | di Thomas Heise 64 Contre toute espérance | di Bernard Émond 14 | 15 Tra le nuvole | di Jason Reitman 42 | 43 Mein Bruder.
