Tissue Converting
Il progetto ambizioso di OMET
di uniformare dal punto di vista
elettronico tutto il parco macchine
per il tissue converting è ormai
realtà. La digitalizzazione dei
dati provenienti dalla macchina
e il controllo remotato delle
funzionalità della stessa, attraverso
l’acquisizione e l’interpretazione
di dati e immagini da remoto, e la
standardizzazione della dotazione
elettronica a bordo macchina, sono
le prime tappe di un programma
per il controllo totale del processo
produttivo del tissue, che sta già
portando enormi benefici per
l’efficienza delle linee.
Che le macchine non abbiamo più segreti
per OMET è un dato di fatto, sia nell’industria
del tissue sia in quella della stampa. La
conoscenza approfondita dei processi
e delle applicazioni, e la cura estrema
nel rendere ogni azione compiuta dalla
macchina autonoma nel suo compimento e
analizzabile dal punto di vista dei dati emersi
in fase operativa, hanno portato al distacco
fisico dell’uomo rispetto alla macchina e a
risultati di fatto indipendenti dalla volontà
dell’operatore.
CIò è il compimento di un lungo processo
accelerato dall’introduzione negli anni ‘80
dei primi controlli elettronici e dall’avvento
dei computer come strumento di lavoro
nella gestione delle funzioni della macchina
e, in seguito, nell’interpretazione dei dati
operativi.
Analizziamo di seguito gli step del progetto
OMET e quali sviluppi sono attesi per il
futuro.

Parallelamente al progetto di digitalizzazione
delle macchine, OMET ha completamente
rinnovato l’offerta della macchina AS Line
per la produzione di asciugamani in carta. La
macchina, che può lavorare bobine da 2600 a
3100 mm di larghezza, è stata dotata, oltre che
da controlli di tipo avanzato, anche remotati, da
un nuovo gruppo svolgitore e da un innovativo
gruppo laminatore (vedi pag. 12). Il progetto di
revisione della AS Line anticipa una revisione
dell’intero parco macchine di OMET con
l’obiettivo di renderle sempre più performanti
dal punto di vista dell’efficienza operativa,

quanto, anche via teleassistenza, è possibile
comprendere il problema in tempi rapidi
e intervenire in modo più tempestivo e
immediatamente risolutivo.
La consolle di comando presente su ogni gruppo
della macchina è equipaggiate con pannelli
touchscreen per la gestione delle impostazioni
locali e/o di pulsantiere a membrana; su queste
ultime, ogni tasto è personalizzabile con cinque
colori che guidano l’operatore nelle operazioni
da eseguire e rendono l’uso della macchina
semplice e intuitivo.
La digitalizzazione dei dati elettronici provenienti
dalla macchina ha una doppia funzione: da una
parte si possono raccogliere i dati produttivi e,
attraverso il veloce adeguamento dei parametri
di produzione considerati migliori, è possibile
ottenere una riduzione degli scarti di materiale,
oltre a un ovvio risparmio di tempo, grazie alla
certezza di una maggior precisione esecutiva.
Dall’altra, la sempre più spinta automatizzazione
delle funzioni macchina attraverso regolazioni
digitali permette una più facile gestione della
stessa nelle sue funzioni di base (incremento/
decremento velocità, avvio/arresto, ecc.) e in
quelle più complesse (registro, modifica del
formato piega, ecc.).

The Evolution of
Electronics for tissue
converting machines
The ambitious project of electronic standardization of the entire range of OMET’s
machines is now reality. The digitization of data from the machines and the remote
control of their functions, through the acquisition and interpretation of data and
images remotely, and the standardization of the electronic equipment on board, are
the first stages of a program for the total control of the tissue production process
that is already bringing huge benefits to the efficiency of the lines.
That the machines do not have secrets for OMET
is a fact. Whether in the tissue or the printing
sector, the in-depth knowledge of the processes
and applications and the extreme attention in
making every machine operation autonomous
in its accomplishment and analysable during
the operational phase, result in the physical
separation of the man from the machine and in
a control independent from the operator’s will
and skills.
This achievement is the fulfilment of a long
process accelerated by the introduction in the
1980s of the first electronic controls and the
advent of computers as tools managing the
machine functions and, later, interpreting the
operational data.
We analyse here the steps of OMET project and
what developments are expected in the future.
First of all, the Research and Development of
the Tissue Business Unit of OMET is concluding
the operation of unification of the operator
interface for all machines in the tissue segment.
Begun in 2013 with the last born, the FV Line,
the homogenization of the so-called HMI
(Human Machine Interface) continued on this
first line and then in the TV 840 Line and AS Line,
this latter the machine for production of paper
towels.
At the same time, it was introduced the
possibility of total machine control performed
by independent servo motors placed on
each axis. The project began with the FV
Line, later extended to the TV 840 Line
and AS Line (TV 503 is currently under preparation
at the time of writing this article). The complete
control of the motors is offered also in remote,
through tele service. It is possible, for example,
to verify the operating parameters of the motor
of a TV 840 Line installed on the other side of
the world directly from OMET’s headquarters in
Lecco, Italy.
Following the standardization of the electronic
equipment, all the machines of the series TV
503, TV 840, FV Line and AS Line, share the
same type of operator panel and the same
console. It must be said, however, that the HMI
is similar in the main controls for the whole
range, but at the same time, specific on the
basis of the different functions of each line. The
operator panel becomes the control point from
which, through the independent servo drives, all
machine adjustments are performed in a simple
and automatic way.

osservanza delle norme in materia di sicurezza.
L’evoluzione continua della macchine e dei
sistemi implica un conseguente e rapido
mutare delle condizioni di lavoro e la necessità,
dunque, di adattare queste nuove soluzioni alle
normative in vigore.
Sulle ultime linee macchina prodotte da
OMET, sono state implementate diverse nuove
soluzioni che innalzano il livello di sicurezza
per l’operatore, già comunque molto alto, e
si concretizzano dal punto di vista fisico nella
presenza di carter, in parte trasparenti, che
“avvolgono” completamente la struttura della
macchina, e nell’applicazione in tutti i punti
critici di paramani di protezione.
Il vero cambiamento, però, è, ancora una volta
“digitale”. Nella progettazione della AS Line e
stato introdotto l’uso di un bus di comunicazione
certificato, dove la trasmissione dei segnali
di sicurezza non avviene più con il cablaggio
tradizionale ma appunto in modo digitale. L’uso
di questo sistema ha portato notevoli vantaggi:
le macchine sono più protette ma non per
questo meno efficienti, i cablaggi sono ridotti e
così le possibili fonti di guasto, la diagnostica è
più semplice e dettagliata.
OMET, dotata di un sistema di controllo della
qualità secondo la norma ISO 9001, è da
sempre attenta a garantire la massima sicurezza
operativa e a fornire solo prodotti certificati,
requisito più che obbligatorio, per esempio, nel
caso di vendita a grandi gruppi e multinazionali
operanti in più territori.
Teleassistenza via internet
L’evoluzione tecnologica dell’elettronica a
bordo macchina ha portato a un incremento
delle possibilità di sfruttamento della rete per la
teleassistenza, accanto a sistemi più tradizionali
che utilizzano il telefono o il collegamento
in rete senza fili. Su tutte le macchine sono
disponibili due tipi di teleassistenza, una che
sfrutta la rete telefonica per le macchine di
più vecchia installazione e e una che usa il
web per le macchine di nuova installazione.
È in fase di test un router simile a quello
esistente per la connessione via internet, ma
più versatile: accessibile anche via rete cellulare
3G o via Wi-fi e con la possibilità di collegarsi
alle linee nuove e a quelle più datate attraverso
i bus di campo presenti in macchina (Profibus/

MPI o Profinet). Un router multi connessione sarà
presto disponibile presso ogni ufficio assistenza
di OMET nel mondo per essere inviato ai clienti
in caso di necessità.
Sviluppo del sistema di supervisione
e raccolta dati
Per rispondere all’esigenza dei clienti di
monitorare e incrementare l’efficienza degli
impianti è stato creato un punto di raccolta
dei dati di produzione della macchina,
di archiviazione e successiva analisi per
l’applicazione di correttivi. I dati principali il cui
download è strategico ai fini della valutazione
della redditività della macchina sono: gli indici di
produttività, le quantità e le tipologie di materiali
usati, e gli allarmi intervenuti in fase operativa.
Tale sistema è opzionale su ogni linea, si può
interfacciare con macchine installate sia di
recente sia nel passato, e integrare più linee
della stessa unità produttiva.
CONNETTIVITA’
Essendo un’architettura basata sugli standard
Ethernet, la struttura dell’impianto può essere
realizzata con le stesse caratteristiche e
potenzialità di una rete intranet/internet e,
quindi, facilmente accessibile sia dalla sede
produttiva sia, attraverso il web, da qualsiasi
altra sede.
SCALABILITA’
Il sistema può essere scalato e adattato per
tutte le linee OMET, nuove ed esistenti, in
modo da offrire una gamma più vasta di taglie
e configurazioni per rispondere a differenti
richieste di costi e prestazioni.
MOLTEPLICI INTERFACCE COLLEGABILI
Con il nuovo Sistema, è possibile gestire un alto
numero di interfacce collegate tra cui:
1) Trasferimento file
E’ possibile trasferire automaticamente sui server
aziendali o più semplicemente attraverso una
chiavetta USB tutti i dati archiviati. Per citare alcuni
esempi: possono essere esportate e importate le
ricette per preset linea al cambio lavoro, oppure
possono essere scaricati tutti i dati di produzione
relativi agli ultimi turni di lavoro.

The use of cameras mounted at strategic
points of the machine helps the operator,
allowing instant and total control of what
happens. The same images can also be viewed
remotely at any time. This becomes extremely
important when malfunctions or failures occur
because, even via remote assistance, you can
understand the problem quickly and intervene
in a more timely and immediately decisive
manner.
The control consoles on the machine units
are equipped with touchscreen panels and/
or membrane keypads for the management of
local settings; on the membrane keyboards,
each button can take up to five different colors
which guide the operator in the operations to
be performed, making the use of the machine
simple and intuitive.
The digitization of the electronic data coming
from the machine has a dual function: on the
one hand you can collect production data
and, through the fast adaptation to the best
production parameters, you can achieve a
reduction of waste, in addition to the obvious
savings of time, thanks to the certainty of a
greater operating precision. On the other hand,
the increasingly intensive automation of the
machine functions through digital adjustments
allows easier handling of the machine in its
basic activities (speed increase / decrease, start
/ stop, etc..), and in the more complex (register,
change of product size, etc.).

operator is an essential aspect that involves
a strict observance of the safety rules. The
continuous evolution of machines and systems
implies a consequent and rapid change of the
working conditions and the need, therefore, to
adapt these new solutions to the standards in use.

L’adozione di opportune misure volte a contenere
i consumi energetici senza incrementare il costo
delle apparecchiature è un fattore imprescindibile
oggi. Mentre, è ovvio, il consumo energetico
delle macchine è aumentato proporzionalmente
all’incremento delle prestazioni, l’introduzione di
motorizzazioni indipendenti ha già comportato
una grande ottimizzazione dei consumi in
quanto è possibile selezionare, e far funzionare,
solo i motori necessari a ogni specifica fase
produttiva della macchina. Inoltre, soluzioni
con alimentazioni comuni come quella
utilizzata sull’AS Line consentono, attraverso
la condivisione dell’energia tra gli azionamenti,
un’ulteriore riduzione degli assorbimenti. OMET è
sensibile alle tematiche del risparmio energetico e
dell’impatto ambientale delle macchine; temi che,
giustamente, diventeranno sempre più importanti
in futuro, nella battaglia per la tutela dell’ambiente
attraverso la riduzione delle emissioni e del
consumo di carburante. La R & D di OMET è già al
lavoro e ci sono notevoli opportunità offerte dalla
digitalizzazione in questo senso
utilizzati ai fini della tracciabilità dei materiali.

Con la registrazione di dati da lettori smart card
è possibile monitorare l’attività di operatori e
manutentori.
5) Misuratori di energia

OMET UTILIZZA L’ENERGIA SOLARE
OMET USES PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY
La nuova sede della Business Unit Tissue operativa da ottobre
2012, si compone di 1450 metri quadri dedicati al comparto
produttivo e 550 metri quadri di uffici. L’intero capannone e
gli uffici sono stati completamente ristrutturati seguendo
tutte le norme di sicurezza e ambientali in vigore. Sul tetto
del capannone sono stati installati pannelli fotovoltaici che
rendono OMET una “green factory” a tutti gli effetti e che
coprono interamente il fabbisogno elettrico dell’azienda.
The facility of the Tissue Business Unit, operational since
October 2012, consists of 1,450 square meters dedicated to
the manufacturing sector and 550 square meters of office
space. The warehouse and offices have been completely
renovated meticulously following all safety and environmental
regulations. On the roof of the plant were installed photovoltaic
panels that make of OMET a “green” factory and that fully
cover the electricity needs of the company.
The latest machine lines produced by OMET
implement several new solutions which increase
the level of safety for the operator, however
already very high. For example, the presence
of a casing (partly transparent) that ‘envelops’
completely the structure of the machine and the
application in all the critical points of hand guard
protection.
The real change, however, is once again
‘digital’. A communication bus and certificate
has been introduced on the AS Line so that
the transmission of the safety signals is not
performed through traditional wiring but in a
digital way. The use of this system has brought
considerable benefits: the machines are more
secure and efficient, wiring is reduced and thus
the possible sources of failure, the diagnosis is
simpler and more detailed.
OMET applies a system of quality control
according to ISO 9001 standards and is always
careful to ensure maximum operating safety and
to provide only certified products, requirement
more than binding, for example, in the case
of sale to large groups and multinational
companies operating in multiple territories.
Tele service via the Internet
The technological development of electronics
on board of the machine leads to an increase
in the possibility of exploitation of the web
for remote maintenance, in addition to more
traditional systems that use the phone or the
wireless connection. There are two types of
remote support on the machines, one that uses
the telephone network, for machines of older
installation, and another one that uses the web
for machines of new installations.
OMET is testing a router similar to the one used
for internet connection, but more versatile,
accessible via 3G mobile network or over WiFi to connect to both new and old lines via the
fieldbus present in the machine (Profibus/ MPI or
Profinet). A multi-router connection will be shortly
available at each OMET Service point in the world
to be sent to customers in case of need.

Development of the system of
supervision and data collection
To meet the demand of customers that need
to monitor and improve the efficiency of their
tissue converting machines, OMET has created
a point of collection of the machine production
data, storage and subsequent analysis for the
implementation of corrective measures. The
main data whose download is strategic for
assessing the productivity and profitability of
the machine are the indices of productivity,
the amount and types of materials used and
the alarms occurred in the operational phase.
This system is optional on every line; you can
interface with machines installed both recently
and in the past, and integrate multiple lines of
the same production unit:

monitored during operation for a proper and
timely control of the operating costs.

and potential of an intranet/internet network
and, therefore, easily accessible from both the
production facility or, through the web, from any
other place.
SCALABILITY
The system can be scaled and adapted to suit
all OMET machines, new and existing, in order
to offer a wider range of sizes and configurations
to meet the different demands of cost and
performance.
MULTIPLE INTERFACES CONNECTABLE
With the new system, you can manage a high
number of connected interfaces including:
1) File transfer
It is possible to automatically transfer on
corporate servers, or simply through a USB stick,
all the data stored including recipes for pre-set
line during job changeovers, or production data
after each job shift.
2) Printers
Connecting to printers for printing, for example,
reports of the end of turn.
3) Barcode/other codes readers
The use of scan reader allows, for example, the
recording of the data concerning paper coils
and inks used for the tracking of materials.

Consumption analysis and activities
for energy saving
The adoption of appropriate measures to reduce
energy consumption without increasing the cost
of the equipment is an essential factor today.
While, it is obvious, the energy consumption
of the machines has increased proportionally to
the increase in performance, the introduction of
independent motors has already led to a large
consumption optimization as it is possible to
select, and operate, only the engines needed to
each specific production phase of the machine.
In addition, solutions with common power supply
like the one used in the AS Line permit, through
the sharing of energy between drives, a further
reduction of the absorption.
OMET is sensitive to topics like energy saving
and environmental impact of the machines that,
quite rightly, will increase their importance in
the future in the battle for the protection of the
environment through the reduction of emissions
and fuel consumption. The R & D of OMET is at
work in this regard and there are considerable
opportunities offered by digitization in this
sense
.

OMET ha di recente presentato sulla macchina
per la produzione di asciugamani AS Line
venduta a Cartaseta, Svizzera, un nuovo gruppo
di laminazione DESL. Il gruppo si compone di
2 cilindri aventi 350 mm di diametro per 3 metri
di lunghezza, con due incisioni che lavorano
in sincrono per prodotti goffrati “nested”
(innestati). La novità è rappresentata dal fatto
che ai due cilindri sono applicati altrettanti
motori ai fini del controllo operativo. I dati di
lavoro dei 2 cilindri sono raccolti in modo digitale
e interpretati per la successiva applicazione
di correttivi. Il cambio è notevole rispetto ai
modelli precedenti con cinghia di trasmissione,
soggetta a usura, e controlli solo manuali, per
loro natura “fallibili” e non replicabili. Il sistema
permette in modo naturale un contenimento
degli scarti soprattutto in fase di avviamento e
un notevole risparmio di tempo per gli interventi
manuali di regolazione

OMET recently presented on an AS Line tissue
converting machine for the production of
towels sold to Cartaseta, Switzerland, a new
DESL lamination unit. The group consists of 2
cylinders with 350 mm in diameter and 3 meters
in length, with two incisions that work in sync
to produce embossed ‘nested’ towels (grafted).
The novelty is represented by the fact that onto
the two cylinders are applied as many motors
for the purpose of operational control. The
work data of the 2 cylinders are collected in a
digital way and interpreted for the subsequent
application of correctives. The change is
notable compared to previous models with belt
drive, naturally subject to wear and tear, and
only manual controls, by their nature “fallible”
and not replicable. The system involves a rather
high reduction of waste especially in the startup phase and considerable savings of time
normally spent for manual adjustments

Sono passati pochi mesi dalla conclusione dei
Campionati Mondiali di Calcio e il mondo ha
ancora ben impresso nella memoria, perché
viste da più da vicino e di conseguenza più
apprezzate, le meraviglie di un grande Paese

Brasile.
La bellezza di questa immensa nazione è lo
specchio di un’economia che sta attraversando
una promettente fase di crescita, in cui il Brasile
guida la fila dei Paesi dell’area BRIC. All’interno
di questa eccitante fase di espansione
economica, l’industria del tissue gioca un ruolo
tutt’altro che secondario con una crescita anno
su anno di oltre il 4,5% dal 2001.
Dopo aver attraversato una fase di stasi
agli inizi del nuovo millennio, conseguenza
dell’instabilità macroeconomica dell’intera
regione, si notano ora segnali estremamente
incoraggianti all’interno di un mercato che si
sta finalmente orientando verso prodotti di
maggiore qualità, sia nel settore Away from
Home sia in quello “consumer”.
Nel panorama dei produttori locali di tissue,
parliamo qui di una realtà giovane che, grazie
a un’efficace strategia, ha saputo in brevissimo
tempo conquistarsi una porzione importante
del mercato.
Carta Fabril è un’azienda familiare, di proprietà
del presidente, José Carlos Coutinho, che
è affiancato nelle varie funzioni dalla moglie
Marilia e dai figli José Carlos Jr., Victor e Caio
Marcus. La famiglia Coutinho è entrata nel
settore tissue agli inizi degli anni ’90, dopo
aver rilevato le attività di una cartiera che aveva

chiuso per problemi finanziari. Con grande
impegno, superando le difficoltà iniziali,
l’attività è stata riavviata con successo,
ripartendo dalla produzione di tissue. Dopo
aver raggiunto questo primo obiettivo, si è
avviata l’attività di trasformazione del prodotto
tissue, con la prima linea per la produzione di
carta igienica.
A partire da questo momento, l’attività ha
continuato a crescere e oggi Carta Fabril è in
grado di offrire un’ampia gamma di prodotti.
Oltre alla carta igienica e da cucina, il range
comprende pannolini per bimbi e assorbenti
igienici, oltre ovviamente ai tovaglioli. E’ stato
proprio il sorgere di un bisogno preciso nel
comparto tovaglioli a favorire l’incontro fra
OMET e Carta Fabril.
Come ci spiegano Victor e Caio Marcus
Coutinho, rispettivamente direttore industriale
e direttore marketing di Carta Fabril, ciò che
l’azienda cercava era un partner unico in
grado di soddisfare alcune precise necessità:
innanzitutto, macchinari altamente produttivi,
per far fronte al rapido aumento dei volumi
richiesti da un mercato in rapida crescita.
Secondariamente, un elevato grado di
automazione della macchina per ridurre il
personale necessario al suo funzionamento, pur
continuando a garantire, grazie a una migliorata
efficienza, i livelli di produzione necessari.

Few months have passed since the conclusion
of the FIFA World Cup and the world still firmly
holds memory, because seen from close and
more appreciated, the wonders of a great country
moving towards a promising future: Brazil.
The beauty of this great nation is a reflection of
an economy that is going through a promising
growth phase, in which Brazil leads the ranks
of the BRIC countries. Within this exciting
phase of economic expansion, the tissue
industry plays a major role, with a year by year
growth rate of over 4.5 percent since 2001.
After passing through a phase of stagnation
at the beginning of the new millennium,
as a consequence of the macroeconomic
instability of the region, you can see now
extremely encouraging signals within a
market that is finally moving towards higher
quality products, both in the field ‘Away
from Home’ and in the ‘Consumer’ sectors.
Having in mind the local producers of tissue, we
speak here of a young company, which, thanks
to an effective strategy, has been able to gain
a significant market share in a very short time.
Carta Fabril is a family business, owned by its
chairman, José Carlos Coutinho, who is assisted
by his wife Marilia in various functions and their
children José Carlos Jr., Caio Marcus and Victor.
The Coutinho family entered the tissue industry
in the early 1990s, after having acquired the
assets of a paper mill that had closed because
of financial problems. With great effort,
overcoming the initial difficulties, the business
was restarted successfully beginning with the
production of tissue. After reaching this first
target, the company entered tissue converting
with the first line for the production of toilet
paper.
From this moment, the business continued
to grow and today Carta Fabril is able to offer
a wide range of products. In addition to toilet
and kitchen paper, the range includes babies’

non solo alle esigenze immediate, ma che
potesse essere facilmente adattato a prodotti
nuovi e innovativi, rivolti non solo al consumatore
standard ma anche al segmento di fascia più alta.
“Ricordo con piacere il primo incontro con
il Sig. Coutinho”, afferma Alberto Redaelli,
international sales manager di OMET. “Ho
ascoltato con attenzione le sue necessità e
mi sono reso conto che la nostra linea TV 840
avrebbe risposto appieno ai suoi bisogni.
Anche grazie all’estrema professionalità dei
responsabili di progetto, siamo riusciti a trovare
una configurazione estremamente flessibile
capace di rispondere a tutti i criteri richiesti”.
La prima linea OMET è stata installata nella
sede produttiva di Anápolis, nello stato di
Goias (l’altra sede si trova a Tribobò, nei pressi
di Rio de Janeiro). La TV 840 Line di OMET
è equipaggiata per produrre i due formati

di tovaglioli commercializzati con il brand
“Coquetel”, nei formati standard (23x21,5 cm) e
grande (30x33 cm). La linea dispone di stazioni
di goffratura con sistema di cambio rapido
del lavoro, oltre a un sistema robotizzato di
separazione e trasferimento dei tovaglioli che
assicura un confezionamento automatico e
perfettamente igienico del prodotto finito.
Erivelto Sartor, e Hudson Santos, responsabili
presso la sede di Anápolis commentano: “La
nostra filosofia è quella di utilizzare macchinari
con la miglior tecnologia disponibile. Infatti,
nella stessa area di converting, sono installate
delle modernissime ribobinatrici Perini. “il
nostro obiettivo è quello di fornire un altissimo
standard di qualità, producendo con la migliore
efficienza”.
Per far fronte all’ottimo successo riscontrato
nel mercato, presto una seconda TV 840 Line

highly productive machines to cope with the fast
increase in volumes required by a rapidly growing
market; secondly, a high degree of automation of
the machine to reduce the personnel required for
its operation, while continuing to ensure, thanks
to improved efficiency, the production levels
needed; third, that the machine could meet the
needs of the average Brazilian consumer, very
attentive to the quality of the product and its
features. Finally, to have a flexible machinery,
capable of responding not only to the immediate
needs, but that could be easily adapted to new
and innovative products, directed not only to
mass consumption but also to the higher-end
segment.
“I remember with pleasure the first meeting
with Mr Coutinho,” says Alberto Redaelli, OMET
international sales manager. “I have listened
carefully to their needs and realized that our our
TV 840 Line would respond fully to the necessities
of Carta Fabril. Also thanks to the extreme
professionalism of the project managers, we were
able to find an extremely flexible configuration
capable of meeting all the required criteria.”
The first OMET line has been installed in the
production plant in Anápolis, Goias state (the
other plant is located in Tribobò, near Rio de
Janeiro). The TV 840 of OMET is equipped
to produce two sizes of napkins sold under
the brand “Coquetel”, in standard format
(23x21,5cm) and large format (30x33cm). The
line has embossing stations with easy change
system, in addition to a robotic system for the
separation and transfer of the napkins that
ensures an automatic and perfectly hygienic
packaging of the finished product.

the best technology available. In fact, in the
same area of converting, we have installed
modern Perini rewinding machines. Our goal
is to provide the highest standard of quality
working with the highest efficiency.”
To cope with the excellent results on the
market, soon a second TV 840 Line will join the
first.
“We were in the position of delivering the
napkins right after they had come out of
the line,” inform Erivelto Sartor and Hudson
Santos. With this new investment, Carta Fabril,
whose turnover reached 900 million Reais (296
million euro) during the last financial year,
is further strengthening its position in the
Brazilian market and establishing itself among
the top ten producers alongside companies
present on the market for a much longer time.

A key aspect in the production of napkins is the
embossing, or the process through which the tissue
passes through the embossing cylinders that “affect”
the texture of the napkin with the aim to make
matches the veils that compose it and make it softer
and more compact. The embossing units on OMET’s
machines work at a rated speed of 800 meters per
minute with a production capacity ranging from 2800
to 6000 napkins per minute.
The sturdy construction of OMET machines
dedicated to the production of disposable paper
napkins and towels enhances the embossing process
and guarantees results characterized by extreme
accuracy, as confirmed by the most important
manufacturers on the market. The possibility to
lubricate the gears through the presence of oil tanks,
the on board cylinder setting system that aims at
making the machine as more rigid as possible, and
the presence of a single independent motor, are
the result of decades of experience that brought

Attualmente, l’azienda possiede 2
stabilimenti e una società di distribuzione
controllata direttamente. FADERCO copre l’80
per cento del mercato algerino ed è attiva nel

Would you please introduce us briefly to the
history of your company?
FADERCO is a private industrial company
founded in 1986, specialized in personal hygiene
products.
The wide range of FADERCO’s products include
femcare, baby care, adult incontinence, cotton
products and tissue.
Currently, the company owns 2 plants and a
subsidiary distribution company.
FADERCO covers an 80 percent of the Algerian
market and is as active in Maghreb and Africa.
FADERCO employs more than 1,200 people.
What about your strategic approach?
FADERCO’s objective is to offer to the Algerian
market high quality products under international
standards.
The industrial equipment supplied by first class
European brands, combined with a restricted
selection of raw material suppliers, is key to the
company’s successful story.
The company has just started an integration
project which will bring it from being a buyer
of raw materials to become a key player in the
Maghreb region as supplier of jumbo paper rolls.
As from the 2nd quarter 2015, the new plant for
jumbo rolls production will be launched. With
30,000 tons per year capacity, FADERCO will
cover more than 80 percent of the Algerian market
demand and will consequently reduce imports
and ensure market stability and availability.

Local consumption habits are quickly changing and
the tissue penetration rate is continuously improving.
Tissue is becoming increasingly more used by the
Algerian people; market outlook are very optimistic
and FADERCO is catching every customer’s
requirement to turn it into a market opportunity.

specific market and what do customers expect
from you?
Yearly, FADERCO launches market researches
to investigate the consumers’ behaviors in order
to understand what products to manufacture in

What is your product portfolio? And your typical
customers?
In 1986 FADERCO started producing cotton
products under the Coty’Lys® brand, including
cotton buds and make-up removal disks.
The volume of its business has continued to
grow throughout this period to reach a real boom
in 1999.
From that date on, the shareholders decided to
change their strategy mainly focused on a monoactivity (cotton derivate) to a diversification
strategy: as a result, the femcare and infant
hygiene sectors were launched.
Indeed, femcare products with the emblematic
brand Awane® gained women confidence
and became the preferred choice for feminine
protection in Algeria. Today FADERCO is credited
by 65 percent of the whole femcare market in
Algeria.
The baby care segment was launched early in
2000 and Bimbies baby diapers have become
one of the most popular brands on the local
market.
FADERCO recently invested in a new industrial
complex, which started production in July
2012. Adult diapers are produced there under
the Uni-form® brand along with a full range of
tissue converted products under the Cotex®
brand (kitchen towel, toilet paper, napkins and
handkerchiefs), and wet wipes.
FADERCO is dealing with distributors in B2B
business, while end consumers go from babies
in their first days of life to people in adulthood.
You work up to today with two machines by
OMET. When did the partnership start?
OMET and FADERCO began their partnership in
2011 when FADERCO kicked-off its expansion
activity in accordance with the company strategy
and the acquisition of two OMET’s tissue
converting machines. OMET has committed itself
to ensure the training of FADERCO’s personnel
with the objective to coach and teach the technical
staff to become power users of OMET’s machine
technology.
What is your evaluation of OMET machines
potential for your business?
We are using OMET production tools and we are
optimizing our production. We produce therewith
white, colour and printed napkins with 1 and 2
plies in sizes 30x30 and 36x36. OMET’s after sales
service and technical assistance (including online
service) is quite efficient.
How do you judge OMET and what are the
expected developments of your partnership for
the future?
The technology of OMET for what concerns the
converting of napkins is proven. Being partners
will be fundamental for FADERCO’s development
in the next 5 years

Come giudica OMET e quali sono gli sviluppi

per la depolverazione su
macchine per tovaglioli
ACE è un’azienda italiana leader nella produzione
di sistemi depolveratori per le più svariate
applicazioni in diversi settori produttivi.
In particolare nel settore tissue dove l’esigenza di
eliminare le polveri che si liberano dal velo in fase
di lavorazione è sempre maggiore, l’azienda di
Legnano ha sviluppato dei sistemi personalizzati
per linee converting e macchine per la produzioni
di tovaglioli.
Non era difficile immaginare che le strade si
sarebbero presto incrociate con OMET, azienda
leader indiscussa a livello mondiale nella
costruzione di queste macchine. Da anni infatti
le due aziende hanno sviluppato una sinergia
tecnico/commerciale, allo scopo di fornire ai clienti
finali una soluzione integrata di depolverazione su
linee operanti ad alta velocità e dalle importanti
performance produttive.
Diverse le tipologie di impianti che possono essere
forniti, da quello base che agisce unicamente
sulla bobina in fase di svolgimento, a quelli più
articolati e modulari che comprendono vari punti
depolveranti lungo la stessa linea.
L’impianto più evoluto in questo senso è il modello
DM1500/T-PLUS, che si è arricchito di importanti
sviluppi tecnici grazie alla preziosa collaborazione
con i tecnici OMET e aziende di primario livello nel
settore del tissue.
Non solo depolverazione dopo la svolgitura del
velo, ma anche nei successivi punti di goffratura,
pinzatura e piega.
L’aumento crescente delle velocità di produzione,
e le tipologie di carte sempre più polverose, hanno
inoltre richiesto l’utilizzo di nuove unità filtranti
centralizzate ad alta capacità.
Provviste di PLC per programmazione e
pulizia automatica dei filtri, la loro efficienza
è chiaramente visibile dalla quantità di polveri
raccolta all’interno già dopo poco tempo dall’avvio
dell’impianto.
Oltre alle linee TV 503 e TV 840, anche la nuova
prestigiosa FV Line a piega aspirata è stata
equipaggiata con un impianto di depolverazione
ACE.
Gli impianti ACE sono facili da utilizzare, versatili,
e con possibilità di espansione modulare anche
successivamente alla loro installazione. Sono
praticamente quasi esenti da manutenzione, e il
ritorno dell’investimento è estremamente rapido se
si considerano i vantaggi che il loro utilizzo apporta:
• drastica riduzione dei fermo macchina per la
pulizia della linea;
• riduzione dei danni sulla linea a causa
dell’accumulo di polveri negli organi
meccanici;
• prodotto finale di maggior purezza, o stampato
con migliore qualità;
• ambiente di lavoro più salubre.

A differenza di altri sistemi presenti sul mercato, e che
aspirano unicamente le polveri liberate in ambiente
durante le fasi di lavorazione e trasformazione della
carta tissue, i pulitori ACE grazie alla loro doppia
azione combinata di soffio e aspirazione creano una
vibrazione ad alta frequenza direttamente sul velo,
dal quale si solleva un enorme quantità di polvere
(nello stesso tempo asportata dalla parte aspirante
del sistema), che sarebbe altrimenti rilasciata in fase
successiva nel corso dei vari passaggi sulla linea.

tissue sono forniti nel rispetto della direttiva ATEX
e attualmente utilizzati da importanti aziende del

ACE is an Italian company leader in the production
of dust removal systems for the most varied
applications in different industries.
In particular in the tissue sector, where the need
to remove the dust that is released from the paper
during processing is growing, the Legnano-based
company has developed customized installations for
converting lines and napkins machines.
It was not difficult to imagine that the roads would
soon be crossed with OMET, the leading company
worldwide in the construction of such machines.
For years, the two companies have developed a
technical/commercial synergy, in order to provide
to end customers an integrated solution for dust
removal on napkins machines operating at high
speed and with significant production performance.
Different types of dust removal systems can be
provided, from the base model which acts only on
the unwinder, to the most sophisticated and modular
which include various dust collecting points along
the same line.
The most advanced system in this sense is the
model DM1500/T-PLUS, which has been enriched
by important technical developments thanks to the
precious cooperation with OMET technicians, and
major tissue producing companies. Not only web
de-dusting after the unwinding, but also on the
embosser, and folding cylinders.
The growing increase of production speed, and
the types of paper getting dustier and dustier, have
also required the use of a new centralized and high
capacity filtering unit. Equipped with a PLC for an
automatic filter cleaning, its efficiency is clearly visible
on the amount of dust collected inside after just a
short time after the system start-up. In addition to the
TV 503 and TV 840 Lines of OMET, the new

machine (FV Line) was equipped with the new ACE

Poppies Europe LTD fu creata nel 1996 per
colmare una lacuna nel settore delle tovaglie
usa e getta, soprattutto quelle per banchetti
in tissue damascato Negli anni, l’azienda ha
ampliato il proprio portafoglio prodotti per
far fronte alle necessità dell’industria del
catering. Nel 2000 abbiamo attivato la prima
linea produttiva per i tovaglioli. Da allora si è
continuato ad investire nel comparto tovaglioli
che conta oggi su 16 linee produttive dedicate.
L’anno scorso, dopo aver ascoltato i suggerimenti
dei nostri clienti, abbiamo deciso di introdurre
una linea di prodotti perl’igiene per offrire
una gamma completa di prodotti usa e getta.
Oggi, Poppies Europe LTD conta su 25 linee
produttive che lavorano 24 ore al giorno e sul
lavoro di 108 dipendenti motivati nella fabbrica
di St. Helens, nel Nord Est dell’Inghilterra.

La disponibilità di merce a stock è la chiave
del successo.
La nostra strategia è quella di monitorare
costantemente il costo della materia prima
e di investire in attrezzature più efficienti
per offrire tempi di consegna più rapidi, pur
mantenendo un prodotto di alta qualità.
Nel 2012, per rafforzare la nostra posizione

Poppies Europe Limited?
What are the main trends of today’s tissue
converting market in your country?
Poppies Europe LTD was initially set up in 1996
to fill a gap in the disposable table cover sector,
primarily with Damask banqueting rolls. Over
the years, we expanded our product range to
cover the needs of the catering industry.
In 2000 we started the manufacturing of
napkins with one production line. Since then
we have continually invested in the napkin
range which now has 16 dedicated lines.
Last year, following feedback from our
customers, we introduced the hygiene product
range to create a one stop shop for catering
disposables.
Today, Poppies Europe Limited has over 25
production lines operating 24 hours a day
with 108 motivated members of staff from our
factory based in St Helens in the North West of
England, UK.
The UK tissue market has always been very
competitive in price, especially for the napkins.
But on top of the price pressure the trend is now
going to increasingly shorter delivery times.
Availability of stock is the key to success.
Our strategy is to constantly monitor the cost
of our raw material and invest in more efficient
equipment to offer a quicker delivery time while
maintaining a high quality product.
In 2012 to strengthen our market position we
acquired one of our competitors, McNulty
Wray LTD who were the bespoke printed
napkin experts in the UK. By doing so we have
enhanced our service and are now the UK
leaders in the printed napkin sector.
Our marketing strategy is now focused on
developing our three brands:
What is your core business?
Our core business is the production
and distribution of disposable products
for the catering industry (napkins, table
covers, paper plates, plastic cutlery,
hygiene rolls, etc.) where napkins are
undoubtedly our best sellers in volumes.
We are mainly in the “Away from Home” market
with a strong network of customers ranking
from small independent wholesalers, to national
distributors and blue chip corporations.
Nevertheless,

che detiene il controllo di circa l’80% della
produzione nazionale di carta Tissue e il 17%
di quella europea.
Fondamentale, durante il meeting, il ruolo del
pubblico, con interventi e domande ai relatori
che hanno generato un interessante scambio
interculturale e sviluppato una panoramica
generale sulla produzione mondiale, sui
prodotti più consumati, sulle caratteristiche
peculiari dei mercati stranieri e i loro sistemi di
distribuzione.
In programma nella giornata anche la cerimonia
di premiazione dei finalisti del bando di
concorso universitario “Premio di Studio CLUB
T&P” che ogni anno il Club promuove e finanzia
e che si rivolge a giovani laureati in vari campi
dell’ingegneria delle diverse sedi universitarie
italiane.

edition of “Le Vie del Tissue”, the international
meeting dedicated to the tissue paper
industry, which took place on May 23rd, 2014,
at the prestigious St. Francis Auditorium in
Lucca, Italy. Extraordinary success for the
event organized by the ‘Technology and
Passion Club’ with the support of the Cassa
di Risparmio Foundation of Lucca and the
Association of Industrialists of Lucca, under
the patronage of the Ministry of the Economic
Development.
The meeting was attended by four
international delegations: Japan, Hungary,
United Arab Emirates and Nigeria, this latter
welcomed by the Nigerian Ambassador
Eric Tonye Aworabhi and by the Minister of
Political Affairs at the Embassy, Ndaman
Aliyu. Also present important institutional and
regional authorities, including the Prefect of
Lucca Giovanna Cagliostro, the Alderman
of the Productive Activities of the Province
of Lucca Francesco Bambini, the Quaestor
Claudio Cracovia, the Mayor of Lucca
Alessandro Tambellini and the mayors of the
paper district of Lucca.
“Le Vie del Tissue” was a unique opportunity,
at international level, to meet learn and
discuss about the different realities of Tissue,
as well as to highlight the excellence of each
production and distribution system, focusing
on aspects such as innovation, curiosity and
peculiarities.

del Club, Palazzo di Vetro di Porcari
(Lucca), ha ospitato, fino al 29 maggio, la
mostra “80 ANNI NELLE NOSTRE TASCHE
– La storia e l’evoluzione del fazzoletto di
carta” che, per la prima volta, ricostruisce
la storia di questo immancabile, piccolo
protagonista del nostro vivere quotidiano.
Risultato della passione del collezionista
lucchese Silvio Fioravanti, la raccolta vanta
più di 13 mila pezzi, provenienti da 78 nazioni,
dai primi modelli degli anni ‘30 alle ultime
novità. La collezione è entrata, a fine 2013,
nel “Guinness World Records” come la più
grande collezione di pacchetti di fazzoletti
esistente al mondo

hanno installato due macchine TV 503 Line per la
produzione di tovaglioli presso New Technology,
azienda membro del colosso russo Constell Group.
New Technologies Ltd è un’impresa giovane che
ha saputo costruirsi un grande consenso in Russia
e che vanta più di 700 dipendenti. Il suo portafoglio
prodotti comprende prodotti per la casa, polimeri
(spugne per la pulizia) e prodotti dolciari.
New Technologies produce articoli di carta per
uso domestico e sanitario usando esclusivamente
cellulosa di alta qualità (carta igienica, asciugamani

marchi Soft e Soft Luxe.

September the same year, OMET’s engineers
have installed 2 tissue converting machines of the
TV 503 Line at the company New Technologies,
a member of Russia’s biggest concern Constell
Group.
New Technologies Ltd is a young but already high
reputed company in Russia with more than 700

household products and different kinds of polymer
(cleaning sponges) and confectionary products .
New Technologies is involved in the production
of paper products for household and sanitary
purposes (toilet paper, paper towels, paper
napkins, paper handkerchiefs) under the brands
Soft and Soft Luxe using only high-quality cellulose.
The modular design of the TV 503 Line allows to
produce any kind of napkin with a high productivity
of up to 2,500 napkins per minute

OMET ha installato nel maggio scorso una
macchina TV 503 Line al cliente PJCS Kyiv
Cardboard and Paper Mill di Obukhov, una delle più
grandi aziende in Europa attive nella produzione di
cartone e prodotti di carta.
PJCS Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill fa parte della
società più grande Pulp Mill Holding GmbH, un
gruppo austro-tedesco con sede a Vienna, Austria,
che produce carta, cartone e imballaggi in Russia
e Ucraina.
L’impianto è situato nella città di Obukhov, nella
regione di Kiev, e copre una superficie di circa 99
ettari con circa 2200 dipendenti.

How was your company organized in the
beginning?
Unlike many pulp and paper productions
worldwide that were based on existing woodprocessing plants, the history of Karina started
from zero. We have brought all technologies
from outside of the country, bought foreign
equipment and invited foreign and Russian
experts in this field.
How many departments and areas of activities
do you have in your company?
We have 22 departments including production
of sanitary products - hygienic napkins, toilet
paper, paper towels (more than 40 kinds of
products also customized).
Are there any special features

di prodotti a basso costo. L’azienda produce
anche una piccola quantità di prodotti premium
la cui domanda nel paese, però, è generalmente
molto limitata.

When I was choosing the tissue equipment, I
considered the price-quality factors but also
the personal approach I experimented during
the first meeting with Mr. Calcagni and Ms.
Gaponova at Tissue World Asia in Shanghai.

Cartaria, giunta alla sua 21esima edizione, si
terrà a Luca dal 15 al 17 ottobre 2014. Si tratta
senza dubbio dell’evento fieristico italiano più
importante per il settore del Tissue, che ha a
Lucca il suo centro nevralgico.
Al MIAC prendono parte le realtà più importanti
del settore cartario produttrici di macchine e
impianti per la gestione del ciclo produttivo
e di trasformazione della carta e del cartone.
E’ bene ricordare che il settore specifico
comprende, oltre al tissue, le carte grafiche, il
cartone ondulato e le carte da imballo.
L’Industria Cartaria italiana, tra le quattro prime
posizioni in Europa come produzione di carta
e cartone (9 milioni di tonnellate), è costituita
da circa 190 stabilimenti sparsi per il territorio
nazionale. Per quanto riguarda l’industria
del tissue, l’Italia detiene il primato assoluto
con una quota di mercato pari al 24% della
produzione totale europea.

The Italian paper industry, among the top four
positions in Europe for the production of paper
and paperboard (9 million tonnes), consists of
about 190 establishments around the country.
As for the tissue industry, Italy is first with a
market share of 24% of the total European
production.
Contemporarily to the exhibition, MIAC
organizes a busy schedule of conferences in
which take part industry experts from around
the world, both as a speaker and as auditors.
The main topics discussed are: Provision of fiber
tissue, Markets, technologies and perspectives,
Forecasts, trends and developments along the
value chain of tissue, The pulp and paper sector
between energy efficiency and markets, and
other topical subject, a conference on Efficiency
and quality of the separate collection of paper
and cardboard.

L’Italia è il maggior produttore europeo di Asciugamani e Tissue con una produzione di quasi 1,8 milioni MTPY. Ciò significa che l’Italia
rappresenta circa il 22% della capacità dell’intera Europa. Il tasso di crescita in Italia stava superando quello dell’Europa quando la
recessione globale ha colpito nel 2009. A quel punto, la crescita si è fermata sia nell’Unione europea sia in Italia. Al giorno d’oggi le
preoccupazioni sembrano essere diminuite con il rientrare della crisi in Europa; ciò potrà consentire all’Italia di beneficiare di nuovo di un
trend di crescita positivo. I livelli produttivi delle macchine per la produzione di carta tissue e asciugamani in Italia sono piuttosto importanti
(quasi il 70%) con macchine molto piccole che producono meno di 40.000 MTPY. Solo il 10% delle macchine sono più grandi e producono
quantità superiori ai 50.000 MTPY.
ITALY, EU’S TOWELS AND TISSUE PRODUCT LEADER
Italy is Europe’s largest producer of T&T making nearly 1.8 million MTPY. That means Italy represents about 22% of the EU’s capacity.
Italy’s T&T growth rate was outpacing the EU up until the global recession hit in 2009. At that point, growth halted both in the EU and in
Italy. Nowadays concerns seem to be relaxing as the European economic crisis subsides, which may allow Italy to get back on a positive
growth trend. Italy’s T&T machine production rates are heavily weighted (nearly 70%) to machines ranging among the smallest, producing

OMET AT MIAC SHOW
OMET presenta al MIAC, presso lo stand 43,
le ultime novità tra cui la digitalizzazione dei
controlli sulle macchine per la produzione
di tovaglioli e asciugamani che permettono
l’azionamento della macchina direttamente
dall’interfaccia operatore, senza necessità
di intervento umano diretto. Ciò favorisce
la sicurezza per l’operatore che si trova a
governare la macchina da remoto, con un
distacco fisico, dunque, dall’equipaggiamento
produttivo, oltre a un notevole risparmio di
tempo durante la fase di avviamento della
macchina e per l’esecuzione delle regolazioni
principali, incluso il cambio formato. A
diminuire in modo drastico sono anche gli scarti
di materiale in quanto la messa a punto della
macchina avviene in modo più rapido e preciso
rispetto a qualsiasi regolazione di tipo manuale
esercitata con la macchina in funzione. Il
controllo da remoto apre inoltre nuovi orizzonti
per quanto riguarda la teleassistenza (che
può essere più tempestiva ed efficace) e la
raccolta dei dati provenienti dalle macchine.
OMET vanta un’ampia gamma di soluzioni per
la produzione di tovaglioli e asciugamani in
carta tissue che comprende 4 linee macchina
modulari adattabili a ogni esigenza. Di recente,
alle linee più conosciute di OMET, la TV 503
Line e la TV 840 Line, diverse per velocità
di produzione e larghezza dei formati, si è
aggiunta la FV Line (nella foto) a piega aspirata
per la produzione di molteplici tipi di tovaglioli,
incluso quelli a piega sfalsata per dispenser.
Per la produzione di asciugamani in carta
OMET propone l’AS Line, che può lavorare
bobine di carta da 2600 a 3100 mm
OMET presents at MIAC on stand 43 the latest
company novelties including the digitization
of the controls on the machines for the
production of napkins and towels. The control
of the machine is performed directly from the
operator interface, with no need of direct
human intervention. This promotes safety for
the operator who can govern the machine
remotely, with a physical separation, then,
from the equipment in production, in addition
to a considerable saving of time during the
start-up phase of the machine and for the
execution of the main adjustments, including
the size change. Drastically decreased is
also the material waste as the tuning of the
machine is quicker and more accurately
performed than any manual adjustment made
with the machine in operation. The remote
control also opens new horizons regarding
the tele service (which may be more timely
and effective) and the collection of data
from machines. OMET has a wide range
of solutions for the production of tissue
paper napkins and towels which includes
4 machine lines. Each machine is perfectly
adaptable to any need. Recently, to the
most renowned tissue converting machines
of OMET, the TV 503 and the TV 840 lines,
for different production speed and format
sizes, was added the FV Line (see below),
vacuum fold machine for the production
of a high number of napkin types including
the ones with napkin dispenser fold. For the
production of paper towels OMET proposes
AS Line, which can process paper rolls from
2600 to 3100mm
