Master Degree - Managing in Emerging Markets
In cooperation with Master Degree - Managing in Emerging Markets The Master in Managing in Emerging Markets (MEM) has been organized to fulfill the needs of Italian enterprises operating internationally, that are seeking highly skilled graduates capable of working in global contexts. These needs have been translated into a Master degree that combines a solid teaching of international management with the intensive study of an emerging country and an extensive internship period. Three well-known universities cooperate in the Master: University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, University of Ferrara and University of Parma. It also receives support and funding from “Associazione Progetto Cina”, an association of enterprises, local governments, university and bank foundations to promote initiatives in and with China. Who Is the Master For The Master Degree in MEM is a Vocational Master (80 credits), addressed especially to graduates in economics, law and foreign language. When compared with common 2 year MSc programs (Magistrali), MEM presents several advantages: it is entirely taught in English, it includes a relevant internship period (most of which spent abroad), it includes an intensive business course at UIBE, a prestigious Chinese University, and it offers a strong placement service. Moreover, participants earn academic credits that can be used to gain admittance to the second year of selected MSc programs. To be eligible for selection interviews candidates must hold at least a bachelor degree and a B2 English Certificate (Common European Framework): if you still need to certify it, on September there will be a test reserved to MEM applicants. Each week there will be 4 days of courses with 4-hour lectures. Students will be assessed at the end of each course. The courses in China will be held at University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing and at Tongji University in Shanghai. Practical Training Two internship periods are part of the program, one in Italy (1 month) and one abroad (3 months), usually in Italian enterprises with operative headquarters in China, India or other emerging markets. Upon request, however, 4 month internships entirely abroad may also be considered. The Master staff will help the students in finding internship placements in Italian or foreign enterprises, public institutions or associations. The reimbursement of student expenses in the internship period depends on the hosting company. Further details on the internship period can be summarized as follows: Students are required to do at least 650 hours of internship, that is around 17 40-hour work weeks. If compatible with schedule constraints, longer internships can be arranged. The internship in Italy has been planned so that interns can get acquainted with their hosting company, should this be Italian. It is, however, allowed to skip the Italian period of internship and arrange for a 4 month internship abroad. The internship period is considered part of the academic program and is therefore insured by the University. Students are however required to buy additional health insurance for the period abroad. Terms and Conditions for Partner Enterprises MEM Master industrial partners are enterprises which offer the opportunity for students to spend two work placement periods, possibly also paying the expenses for the period of internship abroad. In return, they benefit by receiving the specialized training of a resource they may very well hire at the end of the program. Partner enterprises will be asked to actively contribute to the master degree with projects, case studies and their perspective to enrich class debates. Two services will be offered the enterprises in exchange for their contribution: • personnel of the enterprises participating in the Master can attend selected courses as auditors. Their attendance will be a plus for students, who can learn from their expertise; • enterprises with an investment plan or an on-going project for product introduction in an emerging market can get assistance for their project. During the course students will be divided into work groups, under the supervision of the academic staff, and work on projects suggested by the enterprises. This will be a significant achievement for students as it will offer them the opportunity to work on a real project which they will get to present to professors and enterprise management alike. Courses in Italy will be located at the Fondazione Marco Biagi in Modena, and at UIBE and Tongji University in China. Work placement will be located at the offices or plant of the respective partner enterprises. Tuition fees are €8,000 and cover the courses in Italy and abroad, as well as the placement assistance service. Compared to similar international programs, the tuition fee charged is relatively low thanks to the financial support of Associazione Progetto Cina.
