Introduzione/Introduction
Con la pubblicazione da parte della Commissione UE del documento guida sull’economia circolare
del 2 dicembre 2015, le aziende sono chiamate a portare avanti strategie ambientali nei prossimi
anni.
L’obiettivo è di migliore la qualità ambientale e sociale di materiali e prodotti.
La scelta dei materiali rappresenta un fattore molto importante per raggiungere la migliore
circolarità di prodotto in termini di bilancio di materia.
Nella presente pubblicazione sono presenti una selezione di materiali e prodotti ambientalmente
sostenibili che fanno parte dell’Osservatorio Internazionale dell’Innovazione Sostenibile di Matrec
e che sono esempi di riferimento per le modalità con cui approcciare l’economia circolare.
Matrec da anni supporta le imprese nella scelta dei materiali e per lo sviluppo di soluzioni
eco-innovative di prodotto.
Grazie al network internazionale ed alla collaborazione con le imprese, Matrec realizza progetti e

With the publication by the European Commission's guidance document about the circular economy of
December 2, 2015, the companies must carry on environmental strategies in the next years.
The objective is to improved the environmental and social quality of materials and products.
The choice of materials is a very important factor to achieve the best circularity of product in terms of
material balance.
In this publication there are a selection of environmentally sustainable materials and products that are
part of the International Observatory for Sustainable Innovation by Matrec. These are reference
examples for how to approach the circular economy strategy.
Matrec supports companies about the choice of materials and the development of eco-innovative
solutions for new products.
Thanks to the international network and collaboration with industry, Matrec develops projects and
publications on trends of sustainability, such as business support for several sectors such as packaging,
vehicles, architecture, sports, furniture and fashion.

L’UE sta spingendo per un processo di riciclaggio più virtuoso delle automobili, ma per i parabrezza non è ancora stata trovata
una strategia appropriata poichè sono costituiti da un laminato PVB che impedisce ai finestrini di andare in frantumi. Grazie
alla collaborazione tra Interface ed un’azienda di riciclo dei parabrezza, è stata realizzata una tecnologia che permette di
recuperare il PVB ed utilizzarlo nella produzione di moquette come alternativa al lattice nel prerivestimento.
The EU is pushing for recycling of windscreens, but the laminate material PVB that prevents the windows from shattering has not been
given a second life. Interface has partnered with the supply chain to process the laminate and use it in the production of carpet tiles.
Interface introduced the recycled PVB as a sustainable alternative to latex of the precoat.

Materiale costituito da legno di pino silvestre impregnato con alcool furfurilico, prodotto dai rifiuti agricoli vegetali. Tale
processo aumenta la stabilità dimensionale, la durata e la durezza del legno. In assenza di ulteriori trattamenti superficiali il
materiale sviluppa una naturale patina grigio-argento dovuta all'esposizione al sole e alla pioggia. Trova impiego come
rivestimento o pavimentazione.
Material made of scots pine wood impregnated with furfuryl alcohol which is produced from agricultural crop waste. These increase
the dimensional stability as well as durability and hardness of the wood. Without treatment, the material develops a silvery grey
patina due to exposure to sun and rain. It is used as cladding or flooring.

prodotto in condizioni di pressione e temperature elevate così da ottenete un materiale resistente e durevole. Viene
principalmente utilizzato sia per applicazioni verticali di rivestimenti murali per esterni, come il rivestimento di facciate, sia per
balconi o per applicazioni orizzontali sempre per esterni.
Compact decorative laminate made of layers of paper and wood fibres and impregnated with a thermosetting resin. It is
manufactured under high pressure and temperatures in order to obtain a strong and durable material. It is mainly used for vertical
exterior wall coatings, such as facade cladding, balconies or for outdoor horizontal applications.

Un pannello molto resistente in fibre di cellulosa riciclata, pressate a caldo senza l’utilizzo di formaldeide, prodotti chimici o
additivi tossici, viene utilizzato per realizzare un lampadario. Il prodotto viene venduto in kit di montaggio così da ridurre
l’ingombro in fase di trasporto.
A very resistant panel made by compressing recycled cellulose fibres together under pressure whith adding heat without the use of
formaldehyde, chemicals or toxic additives, is used to make a chandelier. It is sold in kit in order to reduce bulk during
transportation.

Telaio dell’orologio realizzato interamente a mano in multistrato di betulla del Baltico; le strisce di legno vengono piegate
attraverso l’utilizzo del vapore. La superficie interna invece utilizza circa 2 kg di muschio grezzo non trattato, selezionato a
mano. Il muschio non richiede irrigazione in quanto, seppur secco, mantiene la sua colorazione e morbidezza.
The frame of the clock is entirely handmade of Baltic birch plywood. Wooden stripes are steam bent. To the inner surface are used
about 2 kilograms of raw untreated moss, it is meticulously hand selected. The moss does not require irrigation because although dry,
maintains its color and softness.

Mixing metal dust left from key cutting with plaster and eco-resin was born a range of home accessories composed of pots, trays and

Un nuovo materiale, sviluppato combinando alghe e carta riciclata, è stato realizzato da due designer danesi a seguito di una
ricerca sui materiali locali. L’alga, raccolta lungo le spiagge della Danimarca, viene essiccata, macinata e cotta. Durante questo
processo viene prodotto l’alginato, un polimero naturale che funge da legante. Il materiale, che può essere utilizzato per
produrre mobili e complementi, ha la consistenza del sughero, la leggerezza della carta ed è resistente e durevole.
New material developed by combining seaweed and recycled paper waste is created as a research into local materials. The seaweed is
harvested along the beach of Denmark, after being dried the seaweed is ground into powder and cooked into glue, utilizing the viscous
and adhesive effect of the Alginate – the natural polymer of the brown algae. It is best described as a warm and tactile surface with
the softness of cork and the lightness of paper which can be used for products and furniture.

L’UNEP e la FAO stimano che ci siano più di 640.000 tonnellate di reti da pesca abbandonate attualmente nei nostri oceani.
Attraverso la bonifica di reti da pesca e altri materiali di scarto viene realizzato un filato di nylon che, con un sistema a circuito
chiuso, può essere scomposto e rigenerato un numero infinito di volte senza perdere le sue qualità. Tale materiale viene
utilizzato per realizzare i tessuti in una nuova serie di giacche e pantaloncini da surf.
UNEP and FAO estimate there are more than 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing nets currently in our oceans. From reclaiming fishing
nets and other waste materials, is create the nylon yarn made of a closed-loop system, it can be broken down and re-born into new
yarn infinite number of times, without any loss of quality. It is used in series of jackets and board shorts.

La cellulosa microbica, proveniente dalla fermentazione della birra, viene utilizzata per realizzare dei nuovi tessuti sostenibili.

Borsa 100% biodegradabile realizzata con materiali naturale e riciclati tutti da fonte rinnovabile.
La parte esterna è in fibre di cocco pressate e resina naturale, mentre l’interno è in lattice naturale essiccato al sole.
I manici e la chiusura, in legno di noce certificato FSC, sono lucidati con cera d’api. Le cuciture sono realizzate con un filo in
pasta di legno, che necessita di meno acqua per la coltivazione e la produzione rispetto ai filati tradizionali.

saddle has a unique and distinctive look, as it is manufactured from recycled Levi’s denim, utilising the same vulcanisation techniques
of the Cambium C17 original. The used denim was collected at Levi’s Commuter Workspaces in Brooklyn, Los Angeles and London in
the Summer of 2014.
