Monica De Cardenas freut sich, die erste Ausstellung in der Schweiz des in New
York lebenden Künstlers Barnaby Furnas (*1973) anzukündigen. In den USA und
in England ist er schon ein Star, hierzulande ist er noch kaum bekannt.
Seine künstlerische Karriere begann als Graffiti sprayender Jugendlicher in seiner
Heimatstadt Philadelphia. Die Spontaneität und manchmal provokative Haltung der
Hervorhebung der bloßen Hässlichkeit von Personen oder Situationen in einer sehr
lebendigen und ausdrucksstarken Form, prägt bis heute den Stil seiner Gemälde
und Aquarelle. Furnas verwendet Ausdrücke wie „retinal sizzle“ (Brutzeln der
Retina), wenn er über seine Bilder spricht. Die Darstellung von Szenen aus dem
amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg, sowie Portraits degenerierter, drogensüchtiger Party
Gänger in einer schon fast bösartigen, aber zugleich amüsanten Weise, macht
seine Bilder so fesselnd für den Betrachter. Furnas, der einen unersättlichen
Hunger hat für das Experimentieren mit innovativen Maltechniken und provokativen
Sujets, beschrieb seinen künstlerischen Ansatz wie folgt: „Ich möchte das, wovon
ich am meisten Angst habe, so betörend wie möglich darstellen".
Ein zentrales Anliegen von Furnas ist der Versuch, den Widerspruch zwischen der
Dynamik der malerischen Geste und der inhärenten Stille des Gemäldes zu
überwinden. Er will, dass die Vitalität der Entstehung, der Akt des Malens, das
Fliessen der Farbe im Endergebnis sichtbar bleibt. Furnas verwebt den Akt des
Malens mit der dargestellten Handlung, die Materialität der Malerei mit seinem
illusionistischen Potential.
Furnas hat sich mit grossen Themen der Tradition und der Mythologie befasst. In
seiner letzten Ausstellung in der Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York 2012 zeigte
er Geschichten von Moby Dick und Jonas mit dem Wal; bei Victoria Miro in London
zeigte er im Mai 2013 ganz neue Darstellungen des Schöpfungsmythos aus der
Bibel: die Erschaffung der Erde und des Menschen in sieben Tagen bis zum
Sündenfall. In einem Gemälde stellte er die Trennung von Land und Wasser dar
und malte dadurch zum ersten Mal eine Landschaft. Das eröffnete neue
Möglichkeiten. In der neuen Ausstellung in Zuoz wird er zum ersten Mal
Landschaftsbilder und Porträts in der Landschaft zeigen. Aber auch diese werden
durch das Fliessen der Farbe animiert und sind sozusagen „bewegte
Landschaften“.
Barnaby Furnas hatte Einzelausstellungen unter anderem im Museum of Modern
Art, Fort Worth, Texas (2012); Museum of Contemporary Art , Denver (2009); im
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art , Gateshead (2005) und Gruppenausstellungen
im Albright -Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo , NY (2011), Ullens Center, Peking (2010),
dem Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas (2008), Deste Foundation;
Athen ( 2007); Kunsthalle Wien (2007); Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai
(2007); The Royal Academy of Arts, London (2006) und im Museum of
Contemporary Art, Chicago ( 2003). Er hat an der Whitney Biennale 2004 im
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York teilgenommen.

Monica De Cardenas Gallery in Zuoz is delighted to announce an exhibition of new
works by Barnaby Furnas (b. 1973, Philadelphia) New York-based artistʼs first solo
show with the gallery.
His artistic career started when he was a graffiti-spraying teenager in his hometown.

who has an insatiable hunger for experimenting with innovative painting techniques and
mind provoking subject matter recently described his artistic approach like this: „making
what you are most afraid of as beautiful as possible.“
The active moment versus paintingʼs innate stillness has been a central concern of
Barnaby Furnasʼ work over the past decade. Pitched between depicted action and the
act of painting – paintʼs illusory potential and its materiality – Furnas entwines history
with art history in provocative combinations of narrative and form. Furnas is interested
in vast array of cultural sources from videogames and other forms of mass culture to
the history of painting and the philosophy of perception. Furnas has often taken on the
most monumental and tradition bound subject matter. By combining in the same show,
war and martyrdom with the indulgent experience of a rock concert, Furnas is in a
sense levelling these experiences to a single point of tension. While one is truly
profound and dangerous, the other is contained, safe and temporary, but an intense
and possibly moving experience.
His show at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York 2012 was devoted to the themes of
Moby Dick and Jonas and the Whale. The exhibition at Victoria Miro Gallery in London
in May 2013 to the myth of creation as described in the bible. By depicting the
separation of earth and water, he painted a landscape: this opened up new
possibilities. In the new exhibition in Zuoz for the first time he will present landscape
paintings, mountains, portraits and still lives. But even these are animated by the flow
of paint: they are landscapes in motion.
Barnaby Furnas has had solo exhibitions in recent years at the Museum of Modern Art,
Fort Worth, Texas (2012), Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2009) and at Baltic
Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2005), with work featured in group
exhibitions at venues including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2011), the
Ullens Center, Beijing (2010), the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas (2008),
Deste Foundation, Athens (2007), Kunsthalle Wien (2007), Museum of Contemporary
Art, Shanghai (2007), The Royal Academy of Arts, London (2006) and the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Chicago (2003). Furnas was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial,
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

La Galleria Monica De Cardenas di Zuoz è lieta di annunciare la prima mostra
personale di Barnaby Furnas in Svizzera.
Barnaby Furnas è nato nel 1973 a Philadelphia, ha studiato a New York e attualmente
vive a Brooklyn. La sua carriera artistica è iniziata quando era un giovane graffitista
nella sua città natale. Lʼatteggiamento spontaneo e talvolta provocatorio di mettere in
risalto la mera bruttezza di persone o di situazioni in modo vivace ed espressivo,
ancora caratterizza lo stile dei suoi dipinti ed acquerelli. Furnas usa espressioni tipo
“rential sizzle” (“sfrigolio della retina”) quando parla del suo immaginario. Raffigurando
scene tratte dalla guerra civile americana o ritraendo situazioni di party a base di
nicotina e altre droghe in modo quasi maligno, ma al contempo divertente, rende i suoi
dipinti assolutamente attraenti per lʼosservatore. Furnas, che ha una fame insaziabile
per la sperimentazione di nuove tecniche pittoriche, ha così descritto il suo approccio
artistico: “rendere ciò che più mi spaventa il più bello possibile”.
Un tema centrale dellʼarte di Furnas è il tentativo di superare la contraddizione tra la
gestualità pittorica e lʼimmobilità del dipinto, ovvero il tentativo di mantenere la vitalità
della creazione visibile nel risultato finale. Furnas intreccia lʼatto pittorico con lʼazione
rappresentata, la materialità della pittura con il suo potenziale illusionistico, la storia
con la storia dellʼarte in combinazioni provocatorie di forma e narrazione.
Lʼartista è interessato ad una vasta gamma di fonti culturali, che partono dai
videogiochi ed altre forme di cultura di massa arrivando alla storia della pittura e alla
filosofia della percezione. Furnas ha spesso affrontato grandi temi legati alla tradizione
e alla mitologia. In unʼunica mostra possono apparire scene di guerra e concerti rock.
Nella sua ultima mostra da Marianne Boesky a New York ha creato immagini legate
alle storie di Moby Dick e di Giona e la balena. Nella recente mostra da Victoria Miro a
Londra ha rappresentato in modo totalmente nuovo scene dalla Genesi: il mito della
creazione della terra e dellʼuomo in sette giorni. Il dipinto che rappresenta la
separazione della terra dalle acque lʼha portato a raffigurare un paesaggio, da qui
lʼartista si è aperto a questa nuova possibilità. Nella mostra di Zuoz per la prima volta
vedremo dipinti di Furnas che rappresentano paesaggi, singole figure e oggetti, ma
anche questi appaiono animati dal gesto e dallʼinvenzione pittorica: sono paesaggi in
movimento.
Barnaby Furnas ha avuto mostre personali al Museum of Modern Art, Fort Worth,
Texas (2012), al Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2009) e al Baltic Centre for
Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2005). Ha esposto lavori in mostre collettive tra le quali
Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2011), Ullens Center, Beijing (2010), al
Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas (2008), Deste Foundation, Atene (2007),
Kunsthalle Vienna (2007), Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2007), The Royal
Academy of Arts, Londra (2006) e al Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2003).
Furnas ha partecipato al Whitney Biennial nel 2004, presso il Whitney Museum of
American Art, New York.
