His vision for the new Christian Art had been to revive the ideal of the medieval “Bauhütten” (masons’ lodges) – establishments of mutual collaboration and inspiration of fine arts, architecture, sculpture, stained glass and painting. Following his vision the manufacture of sculptures, statues and altars dominated the early years. Inspired by the British Arts and Crafts Movement Mayer recognized the opportunity to add stained glass windows of highest quality to his range of products. Locally trained and eventually British stained glass artists and glass painters were invited to his Munich studio. In approximately 1862 was founded the stained glass department within Mayer’s “Institute of Christian Art”. In 1865 the first branch was opened in London. In 1869 it was followed by a branch in Paris. In 1882 King Ludwig II awarded the company the title of “Royal Bavarian Art Establishment“ (“Hofkunstanstalt”). In 1888 the new branch in New York City was opened and brought the company full international status. Furthermore, in 1892 Pope Leo XIII awarded the title “Pontifical Institute of Christian Art“. The most outstanding ecclesiastical commission of that period had been the Holy Spirit Window above the main altar of St. Peter’s Church in Rome (approx. 1905). 71 1 72 mosaico. After the First World War, the ecclesiastical sculpture department was closed down and a new mosaic department was set up. Step by step, the company transformed from a studio which employed artists, into a studio which dedicated all its skills, materials and equipment to the service of the individual and independent artist. From that point on, many freelance artists and architects began to use the services of the studio. The artist eventually became the client and the studio and artisans were to deliver the best execution. After World War II – with most of the stained glass windows in the churches of Germany’s inner cities destroyed through either bombs or air pressure – there had been an immense demand for new stained glass windows based on a new architectural and artistic understanding along with the early liturgical movement of the 1950s. A huge amount of contemporary stained glass windows were designed, fabricated and installed. Some of the independent glass artists should be mentioned: Meistermann, Knappe, Wendling, Burkart, Stockhausen, Crodel, Schaffrath, Nagel, Oberberger, Schreiter. By the 1970s Germany’s and Mayer’s contemporary glass became known internationally. In the 1990s a new and intense collaboration between the Munich studio and British stained glass artists started who by then had become enormously important: Brian Clarke and Alexander Beleschenko. It has long since been time to thoroughly and radically reconsider the 20th century’s reluctance to accept stained glass or mosaic work, and church art in general, as “fine art”. With the help of exceptional artists, with a deep understanding of contemporary art, with the spirit of and respect for traditional as well as innovative art, with a culture of experimentation and collaboration with artists, and much more, Mayer of Munich might lead the world to recognize these “secondary” or “applied” art forms as unique works of “fine architectural art”.
