Optical switching
Current industry standard for an optical switch is between 10 and 100 times
too small for long term scalability in the core network
Multi-Layer Architectures
How can the switching functionality offered by optics be integrated with
higher layers (OTN, Ethernet, IP/MPLS)?
How do these new architectures facilitate carrying future huge bandwidth
services?
How do they provide equivalent access to multiple Service Providers?
How can they be optimised for minimal cost?
How can they be designed to offer Carrier grade performance?
What level of flexibility is required from them (amount of traffic variations,
and how quickly) and how can they be optimised to provide this?

Communicating Objects
Mobile phone as life device
(VW/Audi are already studying how the phone could be your car keys,
navigation system, communications hub, wallet, etc….from the car point of
view)
Sensors. How to find them, how to use them, how to trust them,
Application aware network (intelligent routing)
How can the network identify “sensitive” traffic, what traffic should be
treated differently,
Net neutrality is not useful when traffic is inherently different and has
different transmission requirements

knowledge, entertainment and culuture.

New production techniques and new format for content (motion capture, multimodality capture, virtual capture…)
New creative techniques (cross fertilisation from scientifique, robotique modelisation
and simulation)
New tools facilitating hybridation of content (content transformation, hybridation of
content issued from games, cinema, virtual web, user,…)
New tools for collaborative production (workflows) integrating the user as coproducer
Interoperability of process, format and resources sharing

Media Service Hosting and Content delivery / devices
Further studies are needed in order to allow the use of cohabitating different
protocols and the user of many devices
No predominant solution can realistically be emerging, heterogeneous solutions will
have to coexist : architecture work, middleware adaptations must be carried out to
lead to interoperability, flexibility in connecting various equipments & devices for
media access
Specific aspects as QoS, are applicative constraints to be relayed to access layers, in
terms of "contract" with network resources (SLA) : new mechanisms for command &
control are needed here
Data storage including fast data access, seamless service access,

Access to content and Content sharing
Security and trust (digital right, traceability, integregrity, authentification, ..)
Content can be efficiently extracted in accordance with particular, personal,
professional, geographical, time, etc. depended needs
Multimedia, multilingual, multimodal, interactive, adaptative and cooperative search
and navigation

Content publishing and Interfaces
Innovative devices – Simple single purpose devices, self configuring devices,
Speech recognition / understanding – the terminal understands & talks back with
correct tones (emotions?)
Delivery in “natural” forms, i.e. formats, users are used to from their non-ICT life
