X. EXcellence, LuXury, EXcess is like a recipe for the perfect Italian meal. A dish where ingredients come together in a perfect alchemy of quality and goodness, which can then be experienced through taste and words, where the pleasure of telling about it becomes a multi-sensorial experience of life and culture. Like every recipe, it is the fruit of a project, a process of synthesis that began when a center for international communications met up with a creative research team from the Made in Italy sector. A synergy of different specialties that congealed in the formulation of a magazine whose innovation lies in its graphic presentation as well as the nature and management of its contents. This is a new recipe created from the skillful mixing of experts from the sector with young professionals from the world of fashion design and design-based cultures. The recipe is complete, because the editors themselves are experts in the field of design culture, researchers engaged in studying the relationship between genius loci and local products. The recipe is an original one, a different one, because it is about a type of Italian luxury good that often avoids the limelight altogether. It distances itself from popular international images of Made in Italy and holds fast to the basics: products that are rich in meaning, the fruit of a synthesis between the tangible and intangible values of the local territory, the result of local know-how and excellence, of businesses that often lie outside of the conventional Made in Italy communication channels. A type of luxury that is rooted in a land bursting with its own culture, history, wisdom and aromas, that pours these values into the products, endowing them with a fascinating aura that is readily appreciated by real specialists all over the world. The graphics are designed to distance this project from elements of classicism and folklore that are commonly used to identify Italian products in the international context. Our main objective, in contrast, is to demonstrate that Italy also has a contemporary culture. The editors select businesses with an eye to letting the reader live out an experience that is rich with emotions, Italian emotions, where luxury becomes a mirror of local cultures and reflects itself in the integrity and charm of quality products. Just as the best recipes represent a skillful mixture of delicate and persistent notes, X sets out to satisfy the tastes of a more and more distinguishing public by distancing itself from stereotypes and simplifications and presenting, instead, the infinite facets of Italian products and lifestyle. The physiognomy and nature of Fiorenzo Valbonesi responds to the standard parameters of the collective image of the Italian and European architect: circular eyeglasses in hornrimmed like Corbu, nineteenth century mustache and scarf around the neck. But let’s focus on the person, rather than the appearances. Who knows his land, Romagna Tuscany - a portion of the Tuscan Romagna Apennine that until the twenties of the last century belonged to the Tuscan territory- find, in his blood, in his direct approach but refined language, in his inexhaustible passion for life, traced far back into his origins. Who dwells upon his face begins to imagine the reasons that allow him to create poetry with a brick: an honest face, deep, that indicates a large capacity, partly characteristic, and partly shaped by the relationship that Valbonesi has had throughout the years with one of his teacher, the artist Mattia Moreni: the ability to constantly pay attention to details. It is as if, in those eyes, there are clear motives of the signs left in his architecture. Poetry yes, but honest, without hedonism, careful of the places that should be told, that he talks about and praises. That competence in observation explains the virtuosity of the materiality, the harmony of gestures and the presence, given with wisdom, signs of great personality: elements of inconvenience that destabilize the observer and show sides hidden and vibrant to the masses. The interview is an excuse to spend a day where every detail represents quality and becomes a reason for pleasure and wellness. This takes place by visiting the studio, newly renovated, where we breathe in the meticulousness in which points of irony are hidden. It occurs again, at home, invited to a simple but extraordinary lunch, in which the dishes are made from few ingredients, but all of high quality. Between sensual ceramics of multiform cactuses, bottles of good wine, antique collections of instruments made of wood and works of art scattered with a skillful ease, the pleasurable experience continues, flooded by a red wine consistent and rounded. Then, in this atmosphere, the conversation. SOTTO / BELOW Dell’ottima carne condisce la nostra chiacchierata. Uno scorcio all’imbrunire della cantina Campodelsole, a Bertinoro, Forlì. Sunset view at Campodelsole winery at Bertinoro, Forlì A.T. Fiorenzo Valbonesi, architetto. A.T. Chi partecipa in questo gioco? F.V. A.T. A.T. Un esempio? F.V. A.T. A.T. Fiorenzo Valbonesi, architect. Architect, increasingly specialized in the design of wine cellars. What are the ingredients? F.V. Quality in the architecture just as the highest of quality in the product being made in that space. Architecture that speaks with the parts. Architecture that glorifies the territory. A.T. Who participates in this game? F.V. The parties involved in this process are the client, the architect and the enologist. Broken down: the client owns or buys an area, he calls upon the enologist that, after an analysis of the characteristics and the potential of the land, defines what crops can be taken. This way, begins the process of cultivation and the architect comes when the vines are ready. The enologist identifies the process needed to transform the grape and make the wine. For example, they decide if it needs to be produced by gravity, if the fermentation should take place in terracotta jars or in wooden or metal barrels. The architect then comes in at the moment when the vines go into production to figure out the wishes of the client and to meet the requirements imposed by the enologist and create a dialogue between these three actors. A.T. What role does the land play in this process? F.V. The land is the fourth actor, of fundamental importance. The land should not be dominated. It should not be hidden by signs of selfishness that in the end disgrace it. The land should be respected, and then honored as the winemaking process. I believe that it should not be treated as a hedonistic gesture, but to exalt the brilliance of that place A.T. An example? F.V. The Pugliese wine cellar of Tormaresca, made for Antinori. The project formally evokes the curves of the agave, speak about the waves of the sea. A.T. Unlike northern European studies, the architectural profession in Italy, specializes difficultly into a specific area. The figure of the architect is still affected by the versatility of the Renaissance. After having respected this approach, Fiorenzo, you identified, in a mature phase of your career, this niche. Why wineries? F.V. My meeting, initially casually, with the world of wineries, has changed my life radically. I love wine. Wine is a direct expression of the excellence of a piece of land. It speaks about it, becoming a metaphor for the growth of sensibility for the individual over the years. It goes together with the life of the man for more than 5000 years. Wineries have the power to tell this history, they are the places appointed to handle the genesis of this product, rich in value. The wineries are participating in the birth, the growth and to the production and commercialization of this product. As an architect I create a communication between these intangible values. In fact, to manage the space it is a right and an obligation of the architects, because, we know that, beauty is important. A.T. The designing of wineries is also a new field. They are part of an evolving awareness of Italian products and a renewed attention to Italian wine products. What do you think are the factors that led to this development? F.V. Yes, one could speak of a true evolution of tastes. The concept of wineries entering as a part of the system-product 15.X1.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1. F.V. A.T. Abbiamo superato i francesi. A.T. A.T. A.T. In the United States, in the past years, it has become a trend for the winery to be open to visitors in order to allow them to taste in its place of origin, to show the techniques of the production, to let them breath the same air that the grapes breathed, and finish by educating the consumer and share an experience that is roots into their unconscious. A winery has a life of twentyfive, thirty years, and it affects the image of the land or a company for a long time. We inherited it and we have been busy these past years building this system. A.T. Also because Italy’s role in the international wine scene is of great importance, especially in recent years. F.V. In Italy we have finally reached the recognition of being a reservoir of genetic resources and knowledge of inestimable value. This has made us among the top, if not the first, producers and exporters of wine in the world. We have passed the French. Even though France remains the first in high quality wine, Italy is unbeatable for medium to high quality products and has an advantage for excellent prices. Although the French are still nearly unbeatable with automated collecting systems, in Italy we can brag about technological systems absolutely more advanced. Another characteristic is the variety in Italian wines. We’re not just talking about Chardonnay, Pinot and Merlot, but dozens, hundreds of varieties of grapes, that produce an amazing variety of wines. A.T. From a National and International outlook increasingly more crowded, differentiation becomes essential. The winery then becomes a fundamental instrument both in terms of optimization of processes, and above all the communication of the brand. F.V. Absolutely. And another factor propelling the changes in approach is determined by the fact that many investors today come from different professional fields. Take for example Toscani, which comes from a world of communication, Panerai that comes from publishing and Bulgari that comes from the goldsmith. A.T. To have your own winery, along with your own original resources, is an increasingly common trend? F.V. Yes, we can say that it is even building a sort competition from the investors, although they come from different worlds, they are dedicated to this field. This often brings about positive elements, as far as the transfers made in the field, which do nothing more than enrich the world of winemaking. It’s undeniable that to have a wine making business, along with another activity, creates a prestigious element, which attracts a lot of resources. A.T. We’ve often made reference to the concept of land. What do you bring from your land to your project and what do you find in the land where you work? F.V. I bring the love that I’ve always had for my own land, Romagna Toscana. I would imagine that it is the same love that the client has for his own land. My approach is to be respectful. In the land where I work, I’ll find key elements for the design. The land sells quality in the wine, the food, in the possibilities for accommodation, in the countryside, in the smiles of the people, and instinctively in the artificial environments in which the visitors are welcomed. And this is what I do. A.T. If the winery were a recipe what dish would it be? What 19.X.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1. SOTTO / BELOW Non poteva mancare un ottimo rosso, rotondo e corposo. A view from above of Tormaresca winery, whose roof evokes the near sea waves. A.T. A.T. E il filetto è la terra? F.V. Il filetto è il territorio. Non posso farci molto. Se è buono è buono. Io posso fare il pepe, macinato all’istante. A.T. A.T. Risorse economiche? F.V. A.T. Qual è quindi il committente ideale? F.V. A.T. Che relazione c’è tra i vini che vengono preparati e la tua architettura? proportion of the ingredients? F.V. It’s difficult to put together. It could be a piece of excellent meat, a filet, with cracked black pepper, strong enough, a little extra-virgin olive oil, full bodied and spicy, everything accompanied by a well structured wine A.T. And the filet is the land? F.V. The filet is the land. I can’t do much. If it’s good it’s good. I can put the pepper, ground at the moment. I can try to enhance the flavor. There’s still a lot of improvisation in my way of building architecture. I don’t believe in an aseptic environment, in crystal goblets, in tasting rooms without any smells. I believe in the contamination as a way of being genuine, honest and straightforward, typical in the world of agriculture. I don’t fill it with metaphors, even if I don’t hate them. A.T. So we can say that every winery is a different dish F.V. That’s right. Because the land is always different and always offers different ingredients. This question reminds me of a situation in which I was invited to say a few words at an exhibition of young architects. I used the example of the recipe for tortellini with spinach and ricotta. The ingredients are the same for everyone: to make the pasta I use flour and egg. For the filling, ricotta and spinach. The quality comes from the ability to find the right materials, fresh ricotta from the farmer. A large role is played by the amount of care used to mix the material. The passion that is put in. There are people who make poetry from a brick, there are some who don’t. And moreover, there is the constraining element of the client, and their approach in making resources available. A.T. Economic resources? F.V. I believe that economic resources are limiting, but up to a certain point. Quality can be achieved even with a low investment. Quality and ostentation are far from synonymous. Quality, as one of my teachers Mattia Moreni said, comes from the satisfaction of a need in the moment, in that instant. The architecture is not opulent, it’s classy, elegant and beautiful. Always in a specific context. A.T. What is the ideal client? F.V. The ideal client is one that dreams along with their designer “to speak as did the founders of philosophy”, perhaps drinking a good wine together. The client has a fundamental responsibility during the process, which is to guide and be guided by the architect, in order to arrive to a project that resonates, that vibrates. Otherwise, the project is dead and the winery will come to be used and lived badly. A.T. What is the relationship between the wines that are produced and your architecture? F.V. It is a part of the relationship with the land that we have talked about. I try always to insert strong references to the character of the wine in the designs. I study. I bring home the bottles of wine produced from the land where the winery should be built and above all those produced from it, and I study. I study how the nature of the land relates and is reflected in the wine and vice versa. A.T. Could you give me an example? F.V. A.T. Mi faresti un esempio? F.V. A.T. Come? F.V. Morbido e tagliente. A.T. Dove vorresti progettare la tua prossima cantina? F.V. Non ho frontiere. Ogni sfida è interessante. The design of this object has four degrees of complexity: The landscape, the pre-existence of the old winery, the proximity of the Renaissance castle and the wine that the winery produced, Il Cervaro. The Umbrian landscape, in the Orvieto area, elevation of about 400 meters above sea level, is a landscape lined with calanchi-clay that emerges and mixes with compact sand-made of strong visual contrasts, sharp and intense. Rich, but poor at the same time. The pre-existences created a set of constraints. The medieval castle that dominates the valley and overlooks the winery. Il Cervaro is a straw yellow colored wine, with golden hues. For me it was a great sensory experience, made alongside an exceptional expert, the enologist Renzo Cotarella. We’re talking about a wine that has “first hints of ripened fruit and citrus that are integrated with woody tones of aromatic woods, and after appear hints of mineral and flint. It is a wonderful wine tasting consistency, opulent without being heavy, dynamic with spices and citrus.” This is one of the most important wines produced from Antinori, one of the most well-known in the world. My intention was to transfer these elements into the architectural design. A.T. How? F.V. Chromatically, for example, it’s obvious that it is a winery for white wine and not red wine. The shade of the wood used for the laminated beams was made a little gray, to eliminate the red tones. The local stones were used and the plaster was painted like the farm houses in the area. The pavement incorporated the colors of sand. From a formal point of view the winery incorporates elements of a bionic nature like the wings of a partridge, that to hatch its eggs, extends one wing to better protect its young and to create for them micro-climatic conditions. It is an angular but elegant design. Smooth and sharp, like Il Cervaro. The winery that I built in Puglia, Tormaresca, has very tannic colors, dark, anthocyanins (components that give color to wine) which are important wine shades. This is a winery for Pugliese wine, which comes from vineyards flooded with sun and caressed by the wind. A.T. Where would you like to design your next winery? F.V. I don’t have limits. Every challenge excites me. [email protected] [email protected] 17-27 settembre 2009 ' !"! ' ASSI SI - I TAL I A !"! !""# $ %& '()*"+% !!,%)-%(% ) *)#. !!"!##$%& '( !!)!!!!*'( !!!+!,+- . A HAND-BUILT CAR IS A LUXURY ITEM THAT LIKE A BESPOKE SUIT IS TAILORED TO THE DRIVER. Questo particolare modus operandi darà la possibilità al The story of Pasquino Ermini (born in 1905) begins in Florence in 1927, where after completing technical college he started working as an apprentice mechanic at the workshop of fellowFlorentine Emilio Materassi, who had purchased the Talbot Grand Prix works in 1926. After the team broke up in 1932, the now-experienced Ermini opened his own workshop in Via Campo D’Arrigo 7, where he set up and tuned racing cars for local drivers. He raced in various high-profile competitions, chalking up a number of wins and excellent finishes. Between 1931 and 1938, he drove Talbots and later Bugattis in the Coppa Consuma, drove to victory in the 1937 Parma – Poggio di Berceto when he was first over the line in his category in splendid style aboard a Maserati 4 CM, and took the spotlight in several editions of the Mille Miglia. After the war he relocated his workshop to premises on the corner of Viale Matteotti and Piazza della Libertà where he moved into racing car production. He designed an Alfa Romeo-inspired aluminium twin camshaft cylinder head for application to a Fiat 1100 engine block as well as a car with a Fiat 1100 chassis and a war surplus Alfa Romeo engine with coachwork by Tafani in Florence. For the 1948 season Ermini built three other cars: one with a tubular Gilco chassis, a twin of the 1100 with coachwork by Tafani, the other two with a modified Fiat 1100 chassis and “Gold Wing”-style bodywork by coachbuilders Reggiane. Due to their many innovative features, Ermini cars were coveted by professional and gentlemen drivers of the day. Nowadays technology and innovation are the primary objectives of this car maker. Indeed, a hand-built car is a luxury item that like a bespoke suit is tailored to the driver. The project for the new Ermini, called Barchetta Sport 2000, will involve the construction of a single prototype, based on the design and rendering images developed by Ermini. This particular modus operandi will enable the client to commission the car and follow its construction in close collaboration with Ermini from the initial stages of manufacture through to completion. The Ermini’s Barchetta Sport 2000 will feature a fully hand-beaten aluminium body, exactly like the Ermini racing cars of the 50s. The philosophy behind this prototype reflects trademark Ermini design. The car will be extremely light, weighing about 1050 kg, and will feature a 2000-cc 280-hp naturally-aspirated engine with rear-wheel drive and a high-performance chassis, all designed to create a car that provides the driving sensations of the past which today’s supercars (both too heavy and with poor handling) are incapable of delivering. Once again, Florentine genius is expressed through the conception, design, innovation and technical expertise that make Ermini cars an authentic gem for the few, in this case the individual client, and which are able to compete in terms of allure and exclusivity with the major European car brands. The car, and recently also Ermini timepieces, entirely designed and manufactured in Florence, are the result of a twofold creative research: conceiving and crafting an object that radiates the specific characteristics of excellence of the Florentine environment and genius loci, and the transformation of the intangible into reality through design culture. The importance of place and its time-honoured skills are at the heart of the creative process of this company and provide it with a strong element of excellence and distinction on today’s market. «Fin dall’inizio il mio obiettivo è stato quello di creare un prodotto di qualità, ed è questo il segreto del mio successo» puntualizza Ermanno Daelli presentandoci la sua nuova Ermanno Daelli, stylist and creative inspiration behind the Ermanno Scervino fashion house, comes from Milan but has lived and worked in Florence for years, an exception to the flow of fashion-world actors who set up base in Lombardy’s capital. Being an outsider in origin has not kept Ermanno from growing to love Florence and call it home, especially upon his return from work commitments that carry him all over the world. The new Ermanno Scervino business is not located in the traditional fashion production zones of Tuscany. This choice was motivated by two specific reasons: first of all, this wellestablished couture business - now structured as a modern company - originated in Grassina, a small town just outside Florence at the foot of the Chianti region. The company location was maintained to preserve its deep relationship with local artisans, the keepers of a unique and invaluable tradition of craftsmanship. The second reason is just as important: the business is located in the Tuscan countryside itself, a beautifully supportive environment for the quality of life of all who live and work there. In recent years, the Ermanno Scervino business has enjoyed a great deal of international success, which continues today in spite of the current economic crisis. The secret of his success lies in his products and in the manufacturing process. “Since the outset, my goal has been to create quality products, and this is the secret of my success” Ermanno Daelli points out to us while presenting his new collection. Three hundred and sixty degree quality that starts with an attentive study of materials, workmanship and fashions required to create an innovative and contemporary product by capitalizing on the craftwork and ‘Made in Italy’ traditions. Another critical aspect is the meticulous and prudent management of the resources that enabled this company to grow over the years without overexposing itself financially. This is what gave the brand enough strength to meet the economic crisis being experienced now in the market for luxury goods. Looking closer at the retail system of Ermanno Scervino and how it has expanded, what stands out is the attentive analysis and definition of the needs being expressed by the new markets where products are being released. This intimate concern for the final client, which is a source of much customer loyalty, can already be sensed during the creative phase in the designer’s initial drawings. As Ermanno emphasizes: «When working on my collections, I also consider marketing issues and the needs of my clients. This comes naturally to me, because in addition to working as a stylist I have always followed my own boutiques in person». The design of a garment already involves interpretations of the characteristics that make it stronger in one market or another: a level of customer care that joins the entire company staff together in a common mission. Ermanno Scervino products mirror the deep territorial roots that lie at their origins. Local know-how is utilized and exalted to nurture the development of products that have a great appeal. “I TRY TO EXPRESS MY STYLE IN EVERY COLLECTION, BRINGING THE GARMENT INTO BEING A MOMENT BEFORE IT ACTUALLY BECOMES DESIRED” The critical element that distinguishes this strategy is the territory itself, the well-source of the Scervino world’s innovation and charm, the guide to discovering uncharted synergies between local warmth, culture, history and fashion design research. The territory plays a fundamental role by drawing on the traditional wisdom of genius loci, a robust pooling of charm and creativity that is reinterpreted and blended in with contemporary international fashion trends. Since the dawn of this company, it has relied a great deal on local craftsmanship and collaborated with small businesses endowed with great manufacturing know-how. Once incorporated in the value chain of Ermanno Scervino products, they continued to grow and evolve in step with the brand. The company’s know-how has attracted many proposals from larger manufacturing companies over the years, but governance has held to its path - a difficult choice, but one that continues to support quality products that are neither standardized nor vulnerable to cloning. To achieve and sustain this level of manufacturing quality, the monitoring of local craftwork capacities is fundamental. One of the craftwork crews that has been effectively internalized is the staff of embroiderers that works in the company: an example of how company management and the creative path of Ermanno have joined contemporary, upscale clothing with traditional wisdom and know-how. Toni Scervino, Ermanno Daelli’s partner, uses his local knowledge and experience to find the best craftworkers and manufacturing companies to recruit in relation to the company’s mission and style. This is how Ermanno designs are able to connect with the best craftwork that is most well-suited to the specific needs of the brand. But the most innovative aspect of the company’s creative process is the fashion director’s own capacity to mix new technologies (like laser-cutting) with traditional ones. The Ermanno style is characterized by contrasts - in 39.X.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1. 41.X.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1. The point of combining values with research, after all, is to create clothes made to be worn and lived in the present - garments for everyday living, not sculptures for the catwalk. Ermanno adds, last of all: «I try to express my style in every collection, bringing the garment into being a moment before it actually becomes desired.» The designs of Ermanno Scervino are born from the encounter between creative genius and careful attention to what people are actually imagining and hoping for. This is the real secret behind the charm of Ermanno Scervino, tucked away in the heart of Tuscan lands and culture, where it keeps watch on modern styles and fashion trends through its own inimitable stylistic filter. Le piume più resistenti, dotate di una naturale flessibilità, CONSTANT EXPERIMENTATION HAS ENABLED GALEOTTI TO CREATE HIGHLY INNOVATIVE ITEMS AND FABRICS THAT BREAK WITH TRADITION . The lush, scented Fir, Chestnut and Poplar trees of the Passo della Futa woodlands accompany the traveller towards the small town of Firenzuola on the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. It is here, far from the chaos of the city, that Galeotti decided to relocate in the early 1950s to undertake an extraordinarily innovative enterprise. Drawing on traditions and styles that date back to remote times and the most ancient civilizations, he decided to create fashion accessories made from feathers - timeless decorative elements and distinctive features of Elegance. The creative genius passed on by Galeotti to his children Guia and Guido has made it possible to create a company in this small corner of paradise whose mark of distinction is attention to detail, creative research and sheer excellence. The colourful atelier, where visitors are received, immediately conveys the passion and dedication the company puts into its creations, although what really impresses is its versatility: alongside various models of jackets stand out bodices and exquisite filigree-like shrugs finely crafted by expert hands, plus accessories, woven and spun fabrics. The feathers can be hot-glued onto the most refined fabrics, and silk, cashmere and satin assume even greater sophistication due to elaborate embroidery work. Material from common species is skilfully treated and coloured to reproduce the plumage of exotic birds in a host of patterns. Constant experimentation and adaptation of classic millinery machines have enabled Galeotti to create highly innovative items and fabrics that break with tradition such as shoes made starting from the upper or lined using a unique technique that perfectly combines machine and manual work, clips or the latest addition to the range of products tiles and glasses which conceal feathers within. The naturally more resistant and flexible feathers are used to make elegant wigs and hats, and set beside precious stones become seductive lingerie for clients with sophisticated, refined tastes. All of this takes place with constant attention to ecology: the birds are bred in captivity for food and feathers, are selected and sourced from all over the world upon specific indications, in absolute respect for nature and the animals. The feathers are used to create garments for all seasons and any time of the day: the combination of natural material and the high-level performance it ensures (feathers are waterproof and maintain body temperature) make it possible to create items for daily use, dedicated to consumers with refined tastes who seek absolute elegance. As in the past, Galeotti continues today to draw the serenity from its surroundings that enables it to create without being influenced by passing trends. Customers can choose from the wide range of collection models or request new, customdesigned items, created especially for them: creativity is always ready for new challenges. Maddalena Marconi is definitely a free, curious, eclectic, bright and very feminine spirit much like the fashion creations that she has been launching on the international market for thirty years from her atelier-laboratory in the Bologna neighbourhood. After leaving behind a brilliant career as an attorney and a teacher of French, Maddalena Marconi founded her own company in the early 1980s. At first she established herself, rapidly, by making high-fashion jewellery and jewel-belts that are unmistakable for their use of precious stones and their original design. Soon her products included various handbags that are divided into two lines: a more precious one for the evening and a more practical one, and yet still refined, for the day. Maddalena Marconi’s product is unique and can be recognized for its creativity and exclusiveness and it is still followed step by step in every production phase by the maison founder. “Nothing is cheap, industrial or serialized… only handcrafted creations,” the designer is keen on stating, “to satisfy the fashion requirements of our clients, so that they can identify with something that is unique and unusual, thus making them free and original.” And she adds, “Our product is totally handicrafted and its non-uniformity gives it its added value; the company can boast the production of unique articles, jewel-bags without competition in this segment of the market.” R.B. First of all, could you please explain to us how did you start to be interested in the fashion system? When and how did you discover your passion for the fashion accessory? M.M. I have always had a strong passion and curiosity for fashion design and I have always breathed the atmosphere of the world of fashion. I was born in a family with a unique artistic dimension: my mother was a dressmaker, my aunt an embroideress… I have always been good with my hands and started creating mainly bijoux. R.B. I dettagli appunto. M.M. Credo che la curiosità per le tecniche artigianali, la facilità asked me to enrich some of her models with my jewel-belts and metallic bijoux. The dresses were so successful, thanks to my accessories, that I launched my first line of creations. R.B. How long have you been producing your line? Has there been an evolution in this time? M.M. For more than 30 years I’ve been designing personally the Maddalena Marconi line. The evolution is there… it is physiological. Surely, there has been a sharpening of my taste, an overlapping of contaminations, researches and an exasperated, on my part, attention for all the details. Every season sees a new interest, either for a material or for a technique. Knowledge intensifies by discovering workpeople and the skills of which the Italian territory is rich. Spinning, webbing, tannery, goldsmithing, foundry, glassworks, embroidery: these are only some of the knowledges to be found on our territory that have inspired, contaminated and evolved my creative proposal. R.B. Which elements identify and characterize a Maddalena Marconi model? M.M. The preciousness of the materials and the mastery and innovation of the working methods in the first place. Also, the attention to details and the always present decoration identify ours as exclusive products. The models are characterized with precious stones, valuable leather, personalized metallic accessories, innovative and sophisticated embroideries, realized on precious materials, from the French rebrodé lace to the cornelly lace shaded by hand with the airbrush. R.B. From the creative to the productive process. Which are the working steps on which your product signature is most visible? M.M. In every step of the design, of the prototyping and of the production I try to impress the Maddalena Marconi character. All the metal accessories are entirely designed and produced inside the company. I personally forge gesso or wax casts in order to create the prototypes of the metallic details of the jewel-handbags that we produce. All the goldsmith techniques, including engraving and zip staples are used for our creations. And in fact in the company there are a goldsmith, two setters, a dressmaker and a modelist. Pull zippers, bezel zippers, chains are only some of the details with exclusive design and handicraft processes of realization that I and my collaborators personally supervise. Also in the stamping techniques, in the application of stones and enamels or in the embroideries we show the same attention and refinement. R.B. The details exactly. Your creations are objects to be appreciated up close. Pochette and clutch are best admired by touching them and closely observing the artistry of the execution of the many various details that make them up. Where do you find the inspiration for the complexity of your creations? M.M. The inspiration comes from my 360-degree daily projection on my activity, on what I design and shape. Many are the influences of the external world: a journey, a film, a play, a picture, a work of art. And, above all, the interest for the materials, the techniques in order to assemble them. R.B. What is a must-have in order to do this job? M.M. I think that the curiosity for handicraft techniques, the easiness of design, the skill in managing materials, a certain creativity with regard to matter—all these have sustained 57.X.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1 A FIANCO / NEXT PAGE Ethno-Chic: secchiello in astrakan ecologico nelle tonalità del viola e del marrone. R.B. In passato abbiamo avuto grande successo in Giappone e Gran Bretagna. M.M. Continuare a fare quello che sto facendo adesso, con la stessa passione e la stessa curiosità. me in order to propose my creations. R.B. To whom is your fashion mainly addressed? Which woman do you imagine with your creations? M.M. A joyful person who likes to play, to amuse and to have fun. A woman who is not banal, who likes details and who loves to stand out. Somebody who does not have an anonymous taste, who does not recognize herself in a “griffe,” because we do not think of ourselves as one and we are not one. If I were to give you an example, I would like to see well Charlotte Casiraghi or Afef Jnifen with my creations. R.B. How would you then define your style? M.M. Excessive with taste! A handbag or a belt must confer an ironic and sparkling touch, perhaps even bizarre, and evoke a sense of femininity and frivolity. R.B. Is there a preferred accessory? M.M. The bijou and the jewel-belt are still the creations that I mainly prefer to create and that I try to transpose also in many of the details of the handbags that I propose. R.B. Is there a colleague, a designer that you particularly admire? M.M. Perhaps my model remains Coco Chanel and French fashion in many of its guises. I particularly admire some young people like Alexander McQueen or Riccardo Tisci. It is not my cup of tea, but I think that the creativity and the research of Miuccia Prada are truly remarkable. R.B. Your brand is very well-known beyond national borders. In which countries have your products been most successful? M.M. My product has followed and follows the fluctuations of the markets. In the past we have been very successful in Japan and the United Kingdom. In Europe, at the moment, we sell well in Spain and France. Also new markets as Russia and the Middle East are particularly interested in our fashion. R.B. What are your goals for the future? Which models would you want to create from now on? M.M. To continue to do what I am doing now, with the same passion and the same curiosity. The Tuscan hills, at 5:00 pm. I arrive at the appointment at the last minute. The kind secretary shows me the way to a cracked door marked with an indecipherable name plate, made up of ideograms, indicating Giuliano Mazzuoli’s studio. I enter and a smile surrounded by a salt and pepper beard welcomes me. His face is alive and profound that blends true creativity, a look that I envy and would like to have also. I sit down, with a coffee for me and a cigarette for him, thus breaking the ice. The man I have in front of me was able in only five years to bring his watches into the most prestigious boutiques in the entire world. His notebooks are best sellers at the MoMA store in New York, and his ink pens are gems of design. And yet I am not at all ill of ease. He is a sincere man, transparent and all too modest, a true Tuscan. F.C. Giuliano Mazzuoli, your watches are luxury items, but a different luxury, discreet, without glitter. G.M. I think that luxury goes beyond appearances. It’s not the intrinsic value of the material that defines the value of a product, but what the object tells about itself and the person who made it. My watches will never be studded with diamonds. It would be like denying the philosophy behind my products. I always try to maintain the utmost simplicity, and this, contrary to what one might believe, is a courageous choice. F.C. Yeah, courageous and difficult. G.M. I always say, paraphrasing words that aren’t my own, that there’s nothing more difficult than designing simplicity. Now, everything has been designed, luck is found in the right moment in the right way, that is already there in front of our eyes, ready to be brought back to life. F.C. In fact, your pens resemble forms of mechanical tools, which you have decontextualized, as the great Moka, they cite important references in Italian design. Contagiri, rev-counter with retrograde hand, inspired by the automotive world. design italiano: l’ispirazione è sempre ben visibile ma mai eccessiva. G.M. Ed io, candidamente: perché no? F.C. The inspiration is always visible but never excessive. G.M. Yes, the pens from the Officina line were like that. Tools, as soon as I saw them, in my head were already pens, completely. Even in the prototypes I didn’t put the clip. With Moka the process was different. I was casually designing a pen made from two contrasting parts, then I added the clip and I noted that I had re-designed classic Italian Bialetti. Today, Moka is one of our top selling items. F.C. And Manometro, the watch that declared your success, how did you think of it? G.M. I’ll tell you how it came about. I wanted to design a watch that was different from anything that existed, and so I filled my study with literature, magazines, anything, and I soon realized that wasn’t the way to go. I threw everything away and waited for the “inspiration”. When I saw an old gauge from a workshop I understood that it was my watch. In less than 24 hours I had the first prototype on my wrist. In the workshop they understood that they were making a watch only when I asked them to put the crown at 2 o’clock. They told me, “but, it’s wrong. Why at 2 o’clock?”, and I bluntly said, “why not?” F.C. And this model, from the prototype, has become a cult object thanks also to clever marketing. G.M. At first we didn’t want to over expose the product, so we selected 20 outlets in Italy and we asked them to bring our watches to limited clientele. The products were noticed by a wider audience and today there are clients that travel 300 kilometers to get a Mazzuoli. Throughout the world we’re now in the most well-know towns and stores, and the collaborations with Alfa Romeo and Fiat have given us more regard. Today the requests for the limited editions are in higher demand than what we can offer and that makes us very pleased. F.C. Speaking of limited editions, which are the essence of casual luxury in your collection, what have you got cooking in the pot for your admirers? G.M. The choice to have exclusive limited editions was to meet the needs of the client to have something different, and we are convinced, to be honest, that a limited edition deserves to have substantial differences compared to that of the classic model. Because of this, now, we are coming out with the Manometro Millesimato, 365 watches that have a re-designed case, even more similar to the old inspirational gauge and the serial number written by hand and then printed on the dial. F.C. Why 365? G.M. Because I want to have one watch for every day of the year, in increasing order, so that the customer can buy a watch with a serial number that for them represents a special day, an event that deserves to be celebrated with a special gift. Obviously, if the serial number they want is no longer available you’ll just have to wait until the next year’s Millesimato…luxury also means this. F.C. So the comparison with wine is a must, given the name chosen for this limited edition. Also these watches, like a good red wine, get better with age? G.M. Yes, the market doesn’t ask for new products. With our limited editions alongside the classic model, we continue to make a timeless timepiece, free from the slavery of the 65.X.LUXURY.EXCELLENCE.EXCESS.1. Sempre e solo vetro lavorato a mano. È il caso delle recenti creazioni di Venini, che vedono la Venini was incorporated in 1921 in one of the world’s capitals of artistic glass-making, producing everything by hand and adopting the millennia-old techniques of the Murano glass industry. The Venini style, however, is very different from that associated with the city of Venice in that it is uniquely Italian in character. The company’s history is rich in events and collaborations with major Italian and foreign designers who either acquired their expertise or became famous through their endeavours in the workshops of this company which has always skilfully combined innovative skills with the cult of tradition. The creative process develops as a synergy between designer and master glass-maker for whom the material holds no secret. Intuition is translated into creative sensitivity, the product is designed and formulated; subsequently prototypes are made and tested before going into production. Formal experimentation is pursued constantly and tenaciously, combined with extraordinary creative inquiry into colour. The glass is worked always and exclusively by hand. Innovation is continuous and mastery of glass-working techniques is crucial. This is exemplified by recent Venini creations where traditional production of Murano glass is combined with LED lighting in response to new trends. The techniques themselves have a magical quality: the “incalmo”, for example, involves hot-joining two blown forms along their circumference to obtain an object with differentiated areas usually of a different colour, creating fascinating visual oxymorons and syntagms. Another famous process, which was already known in ancient Roman times, is the “Murrine” technique. Taken up again in Murano in the eighth decade of the nineteenth century, the process consists of joining glass rods of various colours and heating them to form a single cane. The cane is then cut into a series of small discs. The discs are subsequently arranged into a pre-established pattern, then heated, worked and blown to form the final shape of the object: the effect is both dreamlike and kaleidoscopic. The “Tessere” technique was developed in the early fifties and involves working the glass in different stages: first, thin strips of coloured glass are made which once cooled are divided into small parts and reheated to form the final shape of the vase. This decorative technique makes it possible to produce a blown or solid glass object with differently coloured layers of glass with a suggestive colour effect of overlain transparencies. The decorative effect is sometimes enhanced by inserting gold or other metal leaf or small air bubbles between the layers. SOTTO / BELOW Lavorazione vetro in fornace. Foto Basilico tratta dal libro “Venini. Fuoco Sabbia Mani” Glass working in the furnace. Photo by Basilico, from the book “Venini. Fuoco Sabbia Mani” The alchemy of the elements means that the final result is not absolutely faithful to the design, and it is left to nature to provide the unpredictable algorithm which gives the material its final form. Each object retains an indelible trace of the glass-maker, of his human imperfection and distinctive individuality – the vibrant soul of the piece itself. And Venini already has plans for the future. In the words of its artistic director Roberto Gasparotto: it is necessary to persevere in its “intense, cultivated creative inquiry. IN ITSELF SUCH RICHNESS, AND THE HISTORICAL VALUES OF THE SITES OF AN “AUTHOR” AGRICULTURE COALESCE WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A CONTEMPORARY PRODUCT CONSISTENT WITH MODERN LIFESTYLES. If you look towards North from the centre of Florence, beyond the hill of Fiesole, you can catch sight of the first peaks of the Mugello, land of the florentine mountains, where history, traditions and know-how mix into unique manufacturing excellencies. One of the liveliest and most attractive productive areas is certainly that of food and of good cuisine, where research and innovation, rituals and historical tradition blend in melodies of taste. In 1998 the brand Poggio del Farro comes to life, when the namesake farm in the Florentine Appennino begins a research on spelt, a noble cereal of the Tuscan history and culture since the Etruscan time. The brand Poggio alla Pieve rises and developes in Firenzuola, set in a unique naturalistic context, in a land of authentic tastes rich with precious age-old knowledge. Spelt holds in itself such richness and the historical values of the sites of an “author” agriculture coalesce with the characteristics of a contemporary product consistent with modern lifestyles. Spelt sprouts “primitive” and is gathered “coated”, which means that the seed isn’t subject to genetic modifications and, unlike many other cereal species, presents a protective skin that remains until the harvesting period. The “decortication” ritual of removing the protective layer of the seed represents an archaic, authentic act. The technology of Poggio del Farro comes from the competence and technique matured in the production of rice and other kinds of cereal, a main activity area of the farm for decades. A young and dynamic team has rediscovered spelt as a basic element of contemporary style and food culture, re-enabling a traditional product, thanks to their passion and competence, other than a long research in the agronomic and forest field and a vanguard technology. The Tuscan Appennino represents an ideal location to grow this agricultural variety. As a matter of fact, spelt has been grown since the antiquity and today Poggio alla Pieve aims to renovate the synergy between location, product, memory and naturalistic beauties through this good and healthy food, able to give emotion and suggest the fascination of SOPRA E A FIANCO / ABOVE AND NEXT PAGE Autenticità del prodotto e fascino dei luoghi, il segreto dei sapori di Toscana. The world of spelt innovates and discovers new kinds of contemporary diets, dishes and habits and rediscovers pure values, where tradition is seen as an element to improve the modern lifestyle, having a leading role in the new “glamour” cuisine which doesn’t only use health food or vegetarian diets, but rediscovers rituals and food to “eat well”. Authenticity, food traceability, rituality and emotional contents of nutrition, of which the rediscovery of spelt is a significant example, have a pre-eminent role in the new fashion trends of good eating. The control and traceability of the product are an element of absolute priority for Poggio alla Pieve. The seeds are selected directly by an expert and competent company team. Growing and harvesting are carried out by farmers of the Alto Mugello, who transfer the harvest directly into the confection and transformation factory of Poggio alla Pieve. This way the product originated by the farms on the slopes of the Appennini reaches the sale and the clients’ tables. Due to the care with which the cereal is followed from its growth to its transformation, Poggio del Farro can apply the brand CCPB (consortium for the control of biological products), distinctive seal of an excellent attention to the processes of cultivation and production. From the study of tradition and from a close analysis of the contemporary trends rise the Poggio alla Pieve products, effective synthesis between know-how and innovation. The pearled spelt (triticum dicoccum), is the result of an accurate work on the grains and of a careful operation of care and cleaning done with vanguard techniques, which preserve the sensorial properties of the cereal: it’s suitable for salads, during fast lunches and aperitifs, and has a leading role in the new concept of glamour in eating. Other examples of derived products are the Spelt flour, or the Spelt Pasta, fruit of an accurate research in the transformation processes, able to implement pasta, icon dish of the italian cuisine with flavours and fragrances typical of the cereal. The puffed spelt, chocolate or honey flavoured, enriches the ritual of breakfast on an international level, demonstrating the cereal’s great ability to decline itself in the most diverse testing occasions. The spelt beer is the expression of the research and innovation abilities of the farm: a non-pasteurized and non-filtered product, fermented in the bottle like in the best tradition of Nordic beers. Surely the series of products from spelt will not end here: Poggio al Farro is developing new recipes and ideas for an increasingly demanding and attentive client, to whom the farm offers all its own commitment and for whom it continues its work of research and innovation. The club also offers the possibility to enter into the small artisan shops and purchase the crafts made by the hands of the art masters themselves who pass down their knowledge from father to son. The extraordinary experience is even articulated through the taste of the food and of the Tuscan wine. The traditional dishes are prepared by the great chefs and served in the Osteria Tornabuoni. The members of the club are welcomed into the largest wine cellars in the area and led by the owners throughout the wines journey. They can taste the wine directly from the barrels and be guests at lovely lunches in private family homes of exceptional beauty.
