Sicuramente a Saransk avevo dato tutto ! Come hai vissuto queste quattro giornate ? Francesco Fortunato e Robert Heffernan a Taihu 2014 (English version) We asked Francesco Fortunato interview before knowing the result of his enlistment in Fiamme Gialle. Now we congratulate and we thank also the commander of the Guardia di Finanza Sports Group, Gabriele Di Paolo, to have him authorized. Best wishes for the future. 1. When you start to walk ? Have you had any difficulties in learning walking or it was quite natural? I began to walk in July 2009, when I was younger and I was middle-distance for two years with good results. I must say it was quite easy to learn walking. I well remember the first day I walked, I had done a few warm-up lap, a bit of technical exercises and then go in a lap of death against my brother. The clock marked 1:51! 2. What was in your athletic life your relationship with your coaches? My first coach was former the national walker in the 80's of Carabinieri Antonio Lopetuso. I owe him my character and athletic training. Apart from some discussion, there's been feeling and comparison with the utmost respect. Since November 2013 I made the decision to move to the sports center of the Guardia di Finanza in Ostia to train with Patrick Parcesepe. After graduation I wanted to try this new experience to do a qualitative leap and becoming a professional athlete. One year is passed and I’m more than satisfied with my choice. With Patrick I have a great relationship, I trust him blindly and this is key when you want to make a journey together to achieve great results. 3. What was in your athletic life your relationship with judges ? When I was younger I never had the chance to disuss with the judges, I knew who they were but there has never been the occasion to speak, barely greeted them afraid. Growing up, instead I got to talk to some of them and I think it's important this relationship also to understand the technical opinion of who is the "other side". Even more than with the athletes, I think there has to be compared with the coaches. Especially lately I think there is some confusion on the technique of race walking that is taught to the athlete and what is accepted by the judges. 4. If you are disqualified what goes on in your mind, how do you react and how do you improve? I suffere two DQ during my career. After a first instinctive of deep disappointment mixed with anger, I think the DQ is part of the game. No athlete thinks at the start, but it is normal if you race at the top. After the race I asked the technical opinion on me first of all to my coach and then to other competent persons present. By the judges on these two occasions I did not have answers instead. 5. Your best victory and the most suffered ? No doubt the 5th place in the Junior World Cup in Saransk (Russia) in 2012. A truly unexpected and a PB of over 50''. The thousands of people cheering, the adrenaline flowing while earning positions in the last 3km of the race ... I will never forget! The most suffered races are those in which there is a head-to-head until the last km, but I do not remember one in particular. Surely in Saransk I gave it all! (lost 2" with a Russian sprint the last 300m) 6. The defeat left you the nasty taste in your mouth ? Italian Championships Juniors in 2011. I started as the favorite, I had loaded pressure on me and I wanted to win my first Italian title. I left that I had already walked the race a hundred times in my head. It been back-breaking lead the race for 4200m (about 5000m) thinking "what if I lose?" As soon as I was passed, I went into a panic and I gave up. I lost 25" in two laps. Fortunately, the 3rd place was still far away ... 7. How did you experience the change of category from U18 to junior and after from junior to senior? Thanks to my coaches I respected all the step by step improving and doing things at the right time. Since 2009, I have always improved my PB every year and I hope, indeed I am sure to continue in this positive trend for the coming years. 8. You recently attended the four-day Chinese "Around Taihu”. How did you experience these four days? Describe your feelings. It was a really fun experience to compete with all those people, especially without the pressure of a big event. Also to know that you always have the next day to do better stimulated me a lot. Competing with world-class athletes like Lopez, Heffernan, Tallent who were clearly out of condition and come to have fun for a young man like me was even better. No doubt an experience to be repeated. 9. Do you think that the rule applied there ("Pit Lane Rule") may have a future not only in youth walking, but also as a continuing education model? The Pit Lane uses during of that event (I call it somewhat "promotional") worked. So I approve at youth level because not de-motivate the young boys to leave the sport. For most impotants events I do not think it is still possible to replace the current rule. 10. In China, you know athletes from other Countries overseas. Have you discussed about their training? Yes. We were all in the same hotel and in the evening we discuss and chat. It created a nice atmosphere of friendship and discussion, which does not happen during the big races because everyone is more focused thinking about the race. However, as a good curious, I asked a number of athletes as they train in general and the conclusion is that quite everybody now prefer quality over quantity. Less km but high speed. 11. Do you see yourself more adapt to 20 km or 50 km? Absolutely I see myself in 20 km. I love the quality training and certainly the long distance slow train is the boring workout there is. My coach Patrick told me "if you do not in 2016 at least at 1:22:00 you have to turn on the 50 km". It'a risk that I cannot run ... I'm going to train!
