The social aspect It is never too late to learn something new in life, the important thing is to be there to do it. This time I too was as the Open Day on the 4 June organised by Electrocoin and United Distributing, that is, two historic English coin-op companies. In essence I discovered that for the last 20 years these two companies, physically located next to one another, have been inviting the major manufacturers in Great Britain to display, at their headquarters, the latest releases in the coinop sector. They have made some extra space in their showroom, and on just 400/500sq.m a total of 41 companies have exhibited their products. Why then, for me at least, is this an exceptional event? Because all these companies are practically competitors and have accepted to display their products directly ‘at the home’ of one of them! Can you imagine this type of event in Italy, and then that it lasts 20 years? I tried hard to imagine different combinations of Italian companies, but in the end I decided to give up, remembering the difficulties shared every 6 months by Gabriella Zoni and Carmen Zeolla (from the Fiera di Rimini) in trying to keep exhibitors with similar products far enough apart. Let’s then have a look at how this Open Day is organised: each participant pays a voluntary sum, 100-200 pounds, into a common fund that goes to charity. Then, individually or in a group, the refreshments are organised: for example, Games Warehouse for the champagne and the hostesses welcoming the visitors, Electrocoin and Bell-Fruit for the bar, AMG, Coin Slot, Gamesoft, Preview 2009, Suzo and TAB for the barbecue, etc. In essence, for an investment equal to a one-page advertisement in any magazine, the leading manufacturers/distributors are given the opportunity to stay from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. comfortably seated and eat, drink and discuss commercial and association problems (the most important delegates of the powerful BACTA were also invited). When will something similar happen in Italy too? The technical aspect Apart from the positive side of the event as described above, this open day, strategically placed halfway between ATEI in January and Preview in October, was useful as it gave me the chance to try the P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E LUGLIO/AGOSTO 2008 most awaited driving game in recent years: Sega Rally 3. Unfortunately, my natural inability to play these sophisticated machines didn’t let me see what happens at the end of certain routes, however with the help of some experts, I understood how this object of desire works: 3 initial choices, Championship, Classic Race and Quick Race, with 4 optional routes, Desert, Canyon, Tropical, Alpine, as well as automatic or mechanical gear change on a very vast range of rally cars. They tell me, in addition, that the better drivers can use another two ‘concealed’ routes, as well as other cars that are not highlighted. The version presented was a splendid De Luxe, with motion, handbrake (for those who know how to use it) and a wonderful 62 inch screen. The only black mark, yet by now we are used to this, is the price that, even if not final, will be between 18 and 20,000 euro. The twin version will be ready at the end of the year. Significant interest was also shown in a new ticket redemption based on the evergreen Space Invaders manufactured by Taito: this is a combination of video game and dance machine, as players use their feet. Suitably stepping on three sensitive platforms, players try to hit the aliens that come down at increasing speed, to prevent them from conquering our bases. Depending on the number of aliens hit, tickets are won. Now the game is already being tested at the Trocadero center in London and we will soon see the results in terms of takings. Very original too was a 7a machine called Barber Cut , which uses electromechanical scissors to cut the wire the prizes are hanging from. The skill involves moving the scissors, to the right and forwards so that the blades reach the correct cutting position. How many years from now will this be approved in Italy? In the field of games with cash payout, there was a vast choice: beautiful graphics, shiny cabinets, roulette and poker to burn. I also tried to understand the philosophy that these games are based on in England. Take for example the most numerous type, that is, those with a max bet of 50 pence and wins of 35 pounds. The wins are accumulated in a special panel and can: a) be cashed in immediately; b) be used to play again, but always with bets of 50 pence; c) be replayed in one hit on an additional game that allows the win to be doubled, up to 4 times. In essence, the replay is at most equal to the cost of a game, while the max win may reach 140 pounds. THE EXPERT APPROACH Il Park Avenue Open Day si è svolto a Londra il 4 giugno. ? This not is written in the law, but all the games have this, under a tacit and precise agreement between manufacturers. It seems that with our brand-new paragraph 6a machines we are light years away from this philosophy, and while it is right not to take fantasy and creativity away from the Italians, the fact that on topics as important as this we can’t even agree, even outside of the imprecise law that we are still ruled by, on the length of the cycle and number of replayable ‘points’, is true nonsense with possible consequences that we all know too well! There will be always one manufacturer who will take bigger risks, pushing the limits of the set parameters, obviously making the game more saleable and the gamblers happier, and if for now this sees a replay of 400 points and 40,000 euro per cycle, I expect that before long this will reach … ? The English game I most examined in detail was a gaming table with the modern Texas Hold’em poker. It is a game of pure entertainment, without hoppers, win counters, etc., and can only be played by two players, one against the other. The computer acts as the classic dealer and deals the cards to the two players, who can check their hands on two special small monitors, placing their hand in front of them to hide the cards from their opponent. Given that in Italy many police chiefs allow this game ‘live’ as it is recognised as a skill game, I think there should be no difficulties in having it approved by our State Monopolies! Perhaps I’m just dreaming? Certainly, if I had a lot of money, time and … guts, I would like to show one to Ciaravola and the Sogei working group. Clearly I wasn’t at the Open Day by chance. My friend John Stergides invited me, also to help him illustrate the Galileo System by Elmac to his many customers, owners of FECs and bowling centres, as well as, and in particular, to Mr. Alan, manager of Funland, Trocadero, London who took the chance to order a third computer and sixth ticket reader to be installed in his prestigious games arcade. News As well as journalists from the leading trade magazines, another group that stood out was the crowd of executives from Intergame: Christine Butterworth, David Snook, P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E LUGLIO/AGOSTO 2008 THE EXPERT APPROACH - ASCOLTANDO L’ESPERTO Barber Cut di Bandai Namco, vending machine con un gioco d’abilità a 2 postazioni. Barber Cut by Bandai Namco, a dual player SWP vendor. The reason? The official presentation of Intergame Expo, the coin-op exhibition that will be held on the same days as ATEI 2009, on 26, 27, 28 January at the Ibis Hotel in London, that is, just near Earls Court. The reasons for this are well known: the amusement-only sector has been penalised by the organisers of ATEI by moving them to the first floor of the trade fair, so as to give more space to gambling and casino games. Unfortunately, this has upset both the exhibitors of the products for casinos, who find crowds of people ransacking their well-stocked booth bars and who have to waste time in useless chit-chat, and the exhibitors of pure entertainment games, who have less opportunity to illustrate the new models to traditional customers. In essence, everyone is dissatisfied … and thus the solution. Will it however be the right one, or will amusement operators have even less time to visit Intergame Expo, given the attraction to browse the magnificent stands of true gambling games? We will see when the time comes. Conclusions The Park Avenue Open Day is surely an excellent and cost-effective opportunity for the various members of the entire English coin-op industry to meet, and one that will continue to take place for many other years to come. As concerns Italy, I remember that something similar happened in the time of the SAPAR assemblies in Tuscany, where the various sponsors contributed to the event and, more recently, at the Astro Meeting in Milano Marittima. In this regard, let me give some advice to my colleagues from Astro: 1) Astro’s event was wonderfully organized and P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E ‘live’ perché riconosciuto come uno Skill Game, penso che non ci dovrebbero essere difficoltà a farlo omologare dai nostri Monopoli! Boh, forse sto solo sognando? The much awaited Sega Rally 3 De Luxe seen in London. advertised. Attendance was also good even if, given the short time, there was little chance to talk to the exhibitors/sponsors; 2) it was a wasted opportunity for the 3 trade associations to get together and lay the foundations for a common document of shared demands to present to the new Government; 3) presentations for the public were lacking, given that the technical topics covered were well known to some and of little interest to others. In essence, I would advise Massimiliano Pucci to continue this formula, however following the example of our English friends who have more experience, starting in the morning, offering a commercial aspect to the event, and separating the meeting sessions (technical, social, associative, etc.). Clearly I hope he doesn’t get the idea to organise another trade show, we already have enough, but rather to create opportunities to go further into detail on certain problems in the sector, for an acceptable cost and with an understandable economic return for the sponsors.q P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-N-E LUGLIO/AGOSTO 2008
