With his thirst for knowledge, the will to challenge himself and to explore this great man of Renaissance culture is nonetheless surprisingly similar to one who, at the beginning of this third millennium, starts walking. John Muir once said: “Thousands of tired, hyper-civilized people, are beginning to realize that going to the mountains is like going home, that the wilderness has become a necessity, and that the parks and the reserves can not only be seen as gathering locations for wood and as wa- ter sources, but also as a way of uplifting the spirits”. John Muir, the father of the Sierra Club and the great western American parks, was an enthusiastic hiker. Endowed with an incredible energy, he walked assiduously across the valleys of California, Oregon and Alaska. With the help of books and speeches, he spread his passion among politicians, administrators and simple citizens. He was the one that made possible the creation of the national parks of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. He was the one who laid the foundation of the modern hiking fashion. This fashion of trails and hiking – that is not only a fashion, but also the expression of a deep need – keeps growing and developing also in Italy. Motivations which encourage people to go into the mountains have changed over the years. It is no more only a matter of reaching a summit or enjoying quality time in some mountain dew; today people are also pushed by cultural reasons and faith. We have summer circuits and other feasible routes all year- é Alta Via scialpinistica dell’Appennino Centrale - 7 presentazione Alta Via scialpinistica dell’Appennino Centrale no in Abruzzo e nelle regioni vicine. Luca and Angelo applied all these motivations and this pleasure of going to the mountains during these last winters, with their exploration of the wilderness of the Apennines covered in snow. In the last two-three years, anybody could find the two men committed in checking the weather forecast, going to or coming back from some secluded village or valley, looking for sponsors and preparing or unpacking some big backpacks. Together with those days when the mountain had become a job for them, many others came along, days characterized by fatigue, skins to put on and be taken off, icy crusts and sheets, avalanche prone gullies to be crossed or avoided. Sometimes exciting descents were done on these slopes. Some of them with light powder snow, others with melted spring snow, facing panoramas which 8 - Alta Via scialpinistica dell’Appennino Centrale included icy ridges, valleys and often hills and the sea. I have seen all this in their images, heard all this in their words. The result of this pilgrimage in the mountains is the itinerary described in these pages. An itinerary which crosses one after another all the biggest mountain ranges which shape the core of the Peninsula, starting from the Abruzzi and spreading into neighboring regions. These are the Sibillini, with their sharp ridges and rocks, there is also the Maiella with its gigantic valleys, the Velino and the Sirente which seem so close but are always demanding and remote, the mountains of the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo (pardon, Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise) with their dwarf mountain pines, chamois and beech trees. Finally there are the Laga Mountains with their wild ridges and extraordinary panoramas. Being two experienced trekkers, Angelo and Luca (with all their friends, somewhere there will be a list) have walked many kilometers and climbed many meters, have taken innumerable sentono, e che la maggioranza degli sciatori-alpinisti preferirà dividere in tante mini-alte vie. Buone gite! Bonnes courses! Have a great time! They have slept in spartan mountain refuges but also in hotels or farms that offered comfortable beds and nourishing meals. Filming equipments, GPS and ARVA, were replaced by wine, pecorino cheese and sausages at the end of the day. A ll these efforts and also pleasures were finally transformed into a very long itinerary for anyone who has interest. This can be done in one trip if weather conditions permit and the time at your disposal is enough, even though the vast majority of back country skiers would split it in various sectors. But this proposal is not only intended for skiers, it also applies to the administrators, the politicians and the regional park organization. Looking back to past experiences of the High Routes in the Dolomites, the French Grande Randonnées, the paths of Kilimanjaro and Nepal, we can see that walking tourism has a way smaller flow than the one created by the great cities of art or famous coastal locations. Nevertheless it moves motivated people, who can discover new locations and territories and who will come back to spend their dollars, sterling or euro in remotely located areas, helping local people combat the ruin and abandonment of their homes and villages. The magic can happen whether you are walking, on a bike or on horseback. It can happen in the snowy mountains, wearing crampons or skis. I hope that hundreds and hundreds of back country alpine skiers will follow the path of these two great friends of mine, discovering the in own magic in snow covered Apennines. I am confident that many will come from far away – and this already happens. Have a great time! Buone gite! Bonne courses!
