PRE-COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES: The teacher introduces the childen to the hundred square: Come si chiama questa cosa in inglese? Sì “ the hundred square”. In italiano si chiama “La Tabella Aritmetica”. Adesso ripassiamo i numeri da 1 a…. [100]. If the children have not learnt the numbers up to 100 the hundred square can still be used for revising the numbers known. The teacher questions the class asking them to identify certain numbers: “Qual è questo numero?…. e questo numero?…ecc. The teacher teaches the words for: after, before, above and below using lots of examples from The Hundred Square to illustrate the meaning of the words: “Qual è questo numero ? Sì, sedici…e adesso qual è il numero dopo il sedici…..Sì, diciasette…Qual è il numero prima del sedici ….Sì quindici”. Qual è il numero sopra il sedici…e il numero sotto il sedici…. COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITY: The class can be divided into two teams and each team can be set questions such as the above by either the teacher or the members of the opposite team, depending on the ability of the class. The teacher can reinforce the meaning of sopra and sotto by teaching the following tongue twister. A lesson based on tables/ le tabelline or sums / le somme in italiano. In the pre-communucative phase the teacher could again revise numbers as in the above lesson. The teacher then introduces the words for the symbols:…più, meno, per and diviso as well as “fa”. The post-communicative activity could also be a work sheet of tables and sums. B. The teacher could also use the Maths Multiplication Bingo sets available in most schools. Again after a revision session on the numbers and oral tables in Italian the communicative phase of the lesson would involve a class session of Multiplication Bingo [La Tombola della Multiplicazione]. Depending on the ability of the class the teacher could use a child to call out the tables. It is also possible to play in pairs so that weaker children are helped by those more competent in numbers. C. The hundred square could also be used for simple counting practice as well as for multiplication exercises such as counting in twos, threes, etc. Contiamo da uno a venti, contiamo da quaranta a trenta. The hundred square could also be used to explore odd and even numbers as well as prime numbers: La parola per “even” in italiano è pari. La parola per “odd” è dispari. La parola per “prime” è primo.. un numero primo. The teacher revises the numbers by doing counting exercises and tables before asking: Qual è questo numero? Sì, sedici….È un numero pari o dispari?…. venti è un numero pari…..Vero o Falso? Undici è un numero dispari….Sì o no?Trenta è un numero primo….Vero o falso? Sto pensando ad un numero fra trenta e trentatre …è un numero dispari…ecc. The children can also think of numbers and describe them in the same way for the others in the class to guess. E. The hundred square can be used for learning or practising directional phrases such as ”Vai avanti” “vai indietro”: Finding the Mystery Number/Il Numero Misterioso Materials: The large hundred square and individual hundred squares. The teacher first revises the numbers in a way known to the children.Using a child to demonstrate in front of the class the teacher shows how to follow simple directions: Metti il dito sul numero 6…Vai avanti 6 caselle….Qual è il numero? The teacher gives similar directions for other mystery numbers which the children can find on their individual hundred squares. The children can also work in pairs in order to ensure that weaker children follow the instructions properly and maintain interest. The teacher teaches/revises the structures for telling the time using the structure with “minutes past” ie. Sono le sette e trenta. Sono le nove e quarantacinque etc. Communicative Activity: A. Make a large clock on the floor using the number cards. B. Pupils are divided into two groups…hours and minutes. C. Teacher calls out a time. D. A member of each team must run to the card displaying the correct amount of hours/minutes. E. The winner is the child who jumps on the card first. F. Half way through the game the teams can swap roles. G. Pupils can take turns participating in the calling of the times. Communicative: Activity: Time Bingo. Once the children are familiar with telling the time a pupil can call the times. Post-communicative Activity: A game of “Che ore sono Signor Lupo?” See “I Giochi per I Bambini Italiani” section in this booklet. Note: If the commercial sets of Time Bingo are not available in the school, then the grid overleaf can be used. Each child decides in advance on six times which they can draw on the “clocks” as part of the precommunicative activity. The teacher can ask children to call out their decided times. The teacher then calls out the range of times being taught: Sono le due e….. The first child to check off three clocks/all the clocks wins. Commercially made games of Tombola can be bought in toy shops in Italy.It is a great way of reinforcing numbers from 1 – 100. Here is another Lotto type game that can be played in the classroom: CHE NUMERO È? A. B. C. D. Teacher distributes the lotto type grids. See over leaf. Pupils pick three numbers from each line. Teacher checks what numbers some children have chosen. A volunteer comes forward and picks a number from a hat/ container. E. The children who have circled that number tick the number. F. Two more children pick numbers in the same way. G. Pupils award themselves a point for each correct number. H. Pupils put in their total for each line…0, 1, 2, 3, I. The pupil with the highest total wins. Il vocabolario: Adesso facciamo il gioco del ”Che numero è?” Scegliete tre numeri da uno a venti. Ora, la seconda linea…e poi la terza.. Fatto? Children can play the following group and pair games in Italian: A. Each member of the group/ pair takes it in turn to throw two dice. B. Each child says the numbers he/she gets and adds them up. C. The pupil with the highest total wins the round and gets one point. Variations: A. The pupil with the lowest total wins. B. The totals of each round are added up and written down. The first pupil to reach 100 (or a decided total wins). C. Pupils multiply the two dice numbers. D. Pupils make the biggest number possible with the two numbers. E.g. 4, 6, becomes 64 E. Pupils can play the same place value game with three dice for three digit numbers. F. Pupils write down numbers 1-12 in a row on a piece of paper. In turn the pupils throw the two dice, and cross off their list either the separate numbers or the total of the numbers. E.g. If a 6 and a 4 were thrown, you could cross off numbers 4 and 6 or number 10. The first to cross off all the numbers wins or the player with the greatest total of numbers crossed off wins. Memory: The pupils turn up the cards and say the numbers. If they get a pair they keep the pair. Jack [ Il Fante]= 11 Queen [ la regina] =12 King [il re]= 13 B. Snap Two sets of number cards are used and the pupils say the numbers as they turn them up. If the same numbers come up the first pupil to say the number and Snap! wins the pair. C. Kim’s Game: A number of cards are spread out on the table. One player/pair removes a card and the other player/ pair must guess which number is missing. Quale numero manca? D. Guess the next number: Each player in a group guesses and writes down what they think the next number will be. If a pupil guesses correctly he/she keeps the card. E. The teacher can play a class version of this game also. The class is divided into two or more teams. STRAND: Communicative Competence STRAND UNITS: Listening, Speaking Topic: Numbers Revision of 1 - 100 and 100- 200 The language of Measurement Materials: Small individual rulers Metre Stick Precommunicative activity: Teacher introduces the words for metre and centimetre by demonstrating with the metre stick and a small ruler: “Questo è un metro e in un metro ci sono quanti centimetri?……..Sì cento centimetri… Quant’ è lungo questo righello?…..Sì trenta centimetri… Communicative Activity: Adesso usiamo il righello per misurare delle cose piccole.. Misurate il vostro quaderno…quant’ è lungo …e quant’ è largo……. Teacher can tabulate the results on the blackboard. Centimetri: lungo/a largo/a Il quaderno: Il libro di Matematica: Adesso, Marco….quanto sei alto tu? …indovina…….un metro ….o di più…..o di meno?….di più…indovina! Teacher measures the child after he and other children have guessed his height. Each child estimates their height before being measured by the teacher. Pascaline Horan MLPSI © In-career Booklet 12 March 2004 50 Activities with Calculators Attività con la calcolatrice Calculators are part of the maths equipment for fifth and sixth classes. They can also be used for reinforcing numbers in Italian The teacher revises numbers from 1 –100 or beyond. The teacher calls out simple sums at first and the pupils add them mentally/ or write them down. Calculators can then be used for more difficult sums in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This is a very good listening exercise. Pupils can work in pairs or teams taking turns to call out the answers. Money Plastic sets of Euro notes and coins are available in schools, some with magnetic strips that can be used in connection with the white board. The teacher can make a shop using either a chart of items cut from magazines or use actual objects that are of ‘Italian’ interest e.g. A CD of an Italian singer, food products such as packets of pasta….fruit and vegetables etc. The children practise buying various items in the shop and giving the correct change.
