Contemporanea is a calendar of classical music recitals which focus on major composers and themes on the contemporary scene. In this Jubilee year, 2016, we celebrate a particularly beloved British composer performed the world over, Sir Karl Jenkins, focusing on a theme of particular relevance at the moment, that of religious conflict which hinders the peaceful cohabitation of peoples. The project The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace has clear references to musical traditions of earlier historical periods, in particular the Missa L’Homme Armé by Palestrina (who happens to have links with Arco) and at the same time encourages cultural openness, knowledge of the other, and peace which now, more than ever, what we all ardently wish for. As always, in addition to the main event, there are a series of evenings designed to bring the project closer to the public, providing more detail on the background and context of the work. For this edition, the first of the “Extra Events” will be a conference on the theme of the historical conflict between eastern and western religions, discussing the experience of Saint Francis in the Holy Land, with Brother Pacifico Sella (who teaches History of the Church and the Franciscan congregation at the Studio Teologico di San Bernardino in Verona), but also the possibility of peaceful cohabitation and the current day context thanks to the contribution of Marco Ventura, (President of the Institute of Religious Science of the Bruno Kessler Foundation). The second event will be the performance of the Missa L’Homme Armé by Palestrina, which clearly inspired Jenkins in his work. The concert will be performed in the typical setting of the Gonzaga court where Palestrina frequently attended; the choice is also an homage to the Counts d’Arco, because of Count Prospero d’Arco, who offered him an appointment as master of the chapel in the court of Maximilian II of Austria - that he didn’t accept (1657). But before these evenings, ad off the programme, there will be two concerts organized by the Choir Anzolim de la Tor, as tribute to the work of Karl Jenkins (1st and 2nd August). And finally, a date with the maestro himself: a press conference open to the public to meet the renowned musician and hear his thoughts on one of the most frequently performed works in contemporary music. Sir Karl Jenkins was commissioned to write The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace for the celebration of the New Millennium by the Royal Armouries Museum of Leeds. The then curator, Guy Wilson, upon first hearing the result, declared that Jenkins had risen to the challenge, composing the most extraordinary music, varied, accessible, appropriate and cantabile which embraces the whole world and the full gamut of emotions evoked in us by the themes of war and peace. As regards both the music and the lyrics, Jenkins has managed in this work to condense different cultures and tragedies, poems and literature from different worlds which combine to show that the desire for peace is the most ardently desired and sadly, most often disappointed, aspiration of the human race. This is what Sir Karl Jenkins himself has to say about this work: “During the composition process, the tragedy of Kosovo was unfolding. I was thus reminded daily of the horror of such conflict and so I dedicated this work to the victims of Kosovo. A few years later I visited an orphanage in Pristina, the capital city of Kosovo. This was in conjunction with an Armed Man performance in the UK. It is the one and only time that I have been to what had recently been a war zone. It was still occupied by UN forces (mainly Scandinavian). A deeply emotional experience, I also visited some families, living in abject poverty and dreading the coming winter. I was reminded, once again and at first hand, the futility and resulting devastation of armed conflict.” L’homme armé doit on douter. Minnear (Togi Sankichi, 1921-1953) Pushing up through smoke From a world half darkened By overhanging cloud The shroud that mushroomed out And struck the dome of the sky Black, Red, Blue Dance in the air, Merge, Scatter glittering sparks, Already tower Over the whole city Quivering like seaweed, the mass of flames spurts forward. Popping up in the dense smoke, Crawling out Wreathed in fire: Countless human beings On all fours. In a heap of embers that erupt and subside, Hair rent, Rigid in death, There smoulders a curse. Torches Torce Words: The Mahàbhàrata dal Mahabharata (poema indiano VI sec. a.C.) The animals scattered in all directions, screaming terrible screams. Many were burning, others were burnt. All were shattered and scattered mindlessly, their eyes bulging. Some hugged their sons, others their fathers and mothers, unable to let them go, and so they died. Others leapt up in their thousands, faces disfigured and were consumed by the Fire. Everywhere were bodies squirming on the ground, wings eyes and paws all burning. They breathed their last as living torches.
