The sixth step: Singapour
Journey into Fragility is an itinerant project conceived by the artist Maria Rebecca Ballestra, and
inspired by “Carta per la Terra e per l’Uomo” – the “Manifesto for the Earth and the Human
Being” conceived and created by Massimo Morasso. The Manifesto’s twelve thesis have inspired twelve
different projects in as many countries around the world (February 2012 – February 2014), with the aim of
developing an active dialogue on the environment and on the value of life on Earth.
The project's sixth stage, curated by Fabio Carnaghi, will take place - after Ghana, Switzerland,
Madagascar, Abu Dhabi, China - in Singapour from 27th October to 1st November, and it will be
inspired by the Manifesto’s eighth thesis: Respecting local differences and their defining characteristics is compatible
with economic development.
Singapour as a small island that doesn't have natural aquifers and lakes and with little land to collect
rainwater, Singapour needs to maximise whatever it can harvest. Currently, Singapour uses two separate
systems to collect rainwater and used water. Rainwater is collected through a comprehensive network of
drains, canals, rivers and storm water collection ponds before it is channelled to Singapore's 17 reservoirs
for storage. This makes Singapore one of the few countries in the world to harvest urban storm water on a
large scale for its water supply.
A Singapore success story and the pillar of Singapore’s water sustainability, NEWater is high-grade
reclaimed water. It is produced from treated used water that is further purified using advanced membrane
technologies and ultra-violet disinfection, making it ultra-clean and safe to drink.
Developed by PUB after three decades, NEWater has passed more than 65,000 scientific tests and
surpasses World Health Organisation requirements, a testimony of its high quality and reliability.
NEWater is proof that using today's water treatment technologies, water of any quality can be treated into
drinking water. It has put Singaour on the world map for innovative water management, including winning
for PUB the Stockholm Industry Water Award in 2007.
The first NEWater plants were opened in 2003. Currently, NEWater meets 30% of the nation’s water
needs. By 2060, Singapore plans to triple the current NEWater capacity so that NEWater can meet 50% of
the future water demand.

Art sowing on demand: Tree of 7 metres, 1980-82 by Giuseppe Penone*

Today 09 October 2012 represents a new crucial moment in Microcollection artistic path as its director
Elisa Bollazzi gives to Maria Rebecca Ballestra a micro-fragment of the important artwork Tree of 7 metres,
1980-82 by Giuseppe Penone - lovingly saved from oblivion in 1991 – sure that she will pursue this Art
Sowing on demand in Singapore in a green area she will then take good care of forever.
The so-called project Art sowings on demand - together with the traditional Art sowings - has been pursued by
the Microcollection director herself since 2008and it will help accelerate the dynamics of returning the artfragments, lovingly collected since 1990, back to the world.
The public random will be able to experience, in the contemplation of a green area of art works in
progress, a beneficial waiting that fosters creativity and open spaces of thought, giving rise to suggestions
and possible imaginary. It thus create a social space, a meeting place for discussion and debate in the time
of waiting as a space of thought and research.
With this type of intervention, both theoretical and expositive, it investigated the relationship that exists
between material and immaterial, presence and absence, within a research now more than twenty years.
* Giuseppe Penone, born April 3, 1947 is an Italian artist. He started working professionally in 1968 in the
Garessio forest, near where he was born. He is the younger member of the Italian Movement named
“Arte Povera”. Penone’s work is concerned with establishing a contact between man and nature.
His works have been shown in major modern art museums all over the world.

ELISA BOLLAZZI interviewing MICROCOLLECTION
Elisa Bollazzi: When and how did you get the idea for Microcollection?
Microcollection: In 1990. I was visiting the Venice Biennale and, almost by chance, picked up a few fragments
accidentally fallen onto the floor from a fantastic work by Anish Kapoor. These “microparticles”, overlooked by
everyone else, opened up a new world, an illumination! They triggered a completely fresh approach to meandering
from gallery to gallery, from one museum to another.
EB: How many fragments does Microcollection own now?
M: More than 800, also thanks to the precious help of artists, collectors, friends that constantly send me art-particles
from everywhere.

EB: What do you do with these donations?
M: The fragments are filed and can be viewed under a microscope in itinerant Cabinets de Regard, in which the
viewers can sense the invisible and the real essence of art. Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, Fontana,
Penone, Paolini, Beuys, Buren, Cragg, Long, and so on.
EB: Tell us about your project Art Sowins..
M: The Art Sowings started in 2008 with the creation of small green areas planted and cultivated with valuable
microparticles of artworks whose titles clearly show the selection criteria adopted: Tree of 3 Metres by Giuseppe
Penone, Watermelons by Piero Gilardi, Garden by Paul McCarthy, etc.
EB: Where about?
M: Milan, Turin, Bozen, Basel, and so on. In 2010 in Jerago with Waiting flowerbed, an area planted with art fragments
next to a bench on which sit and wait for an utopic art-garden to grow, a thought-provoking space, a meeting point,
where the work of art starts a process that changes the way we look at the “art system”. A beneficial wait to stimulate
creativity and start thought spaces in the contemplation of a growing art garden.
EB: What are the so-called Art Sowings on demand ?
M: In 2011, I started the so-called project Art sowings on demand based on collaboration and faith. Art fragments sent
to supporters, artists, friends in Italy and abroad. They will help create a cultural-artistic humus in parks and gardens
all over the world.
EB: Is there any links between picking up art fragments and planting them?
M: After long years spent picking up the “invisible”, I am now ready to return the world what I have lovingly
collected so far. Micro-donations to the world . After long years spent watching the world, I am now ready to act and
live my life.

Sesta tappa: Singapore
Journey into Fragility è un progetto itinerante concepito dall’artista Maria Rebecca Ballestra e ispirato
alla “Carta per la Terra e per l’Uomo” di Massimo Morasso. Le dodici tesi della Carta ispireranno dodici
diversi progetti in altrettanti paesi del mondo (febbraio 2012 - febbraio 2014) con l’intento di sviluppare un
dialogo attivo sull’ambiente e sul valore del vivere sulla Terra.
La sesta tappa del progetto, curata da Fabio Carnaghi, si svolgerà - dopo Ghana, Svizzera, Madagascar,
Abu Dhabi, Cina - a Singapore dal 27 ottobre al 1 novembre, e si ispirerà all’ottava tesi della Carta: la
cancellazione dei tratti differenziali che distinguono un luogo da un altro non è un ineluttabile correlato dello sviluppo
economico.
Singapore è una piccola isola senza falde acquifere naturali e con poca terra che trattenga l'acqua piovana,
per questo ha bisogno di ottimizzare tutto ciò che può raccogliere. Attualmente Singapore utilizza due
sistemi separati per raccogliere l'acqua piovana e per riciclare l'acqua già utilizzata. L'acqua piovana viene
raccolta attraverso una vasta rete di canali di scolo, fiumi e stagni, prima di essere convogliata verso i 17
serbatoi per lo stoccaggio, sistema che situa Singapore tra i pochi paesi al mondo che raccolgono le acque
piovane urbane su larga scala.
Uno dei successi per la storia di Singapore e pilastro della sostenibilità dell'acqua, è NEWater, un’acqua
riciclata di alta qualità. È prodotta da acqua trattata che viene ulteriormente purificata utilizzando
tecnologie a membrana avanzate e disinfezione ultra-violetta, che la rende ultra-pulita e sicura da bere.
Sviluppato da PUB per tre decenni, NEWater ha passato più di 65.000 test scientifici e supera i requisiti del
World Health Organisation, una testimonianza della sua alta qualità e affidabilità.
NEWater è la prova che utilizzando le tecnologie per il trattamento dell’acqua di qualsiasi tipo si può
riconvertirla in acqua potabile. Questo pone Singapore tra i paesi al mondo con la gestione più innovativa
dell'acqua, riconosciuta anche dal premio per PUB Water Industry Stoccolma nel 2007.
I primi impianti NEWater sono stati inaugurati nel 2003. Attualmente NEWater soddisfa il 30% del
fabbisogno d’acqua a livello nazionale. Entro il 2060, Singapore prevede di triplicare l'attuale capacità di
NEWater in modo che possa soddisfare il 50% della domanda futura di acqua.

Semina d’arte su commissione: Albero di 7 metri, 1980-82 di Giuseppe Penone*

Martedì 9 ottobre 2012 segna un altro importante momento nell’intenso percorso artistico di Microcollection
in quanto la direttrice Elisa Bollazzi spedisce all’artista Maria Rebecca Ballestra, ideatrice del progetto
Journey into Fragility, un frammento dell’opera Albero di 7 metri, 1980-82 di Giuseppe Penone –
amorevolmente sottratto all’oblio nel lontano 1991 - sicura che Maria Rebecca, da sempre attenta al
rapporto tra arte e natura, effettuerà con gioia questa Semina d’arte su commissione a Singapore in un’area
verde di sua preferenza, di cui certamente avrà cura per l’eternità.
Le cosiddette Semine d’arte su commissione si basano sulla collaborazione e la fiducia, grazie al prezioso
contributo di una fitta rete di amicizie coltivate negli intensi anni di attività nel mondo. Queste Semine d’arte
su commissione attiveranno, insieme alle Semine d’arte effettuate personalmente da Elisa Bollazzi dal 2008, una
dinamica di restituzione fisica dei frammenti di Microcollection prelevati negli anni in una trasparente
simbologia di prendere e dare, di prelievo e dono.
Il pubblico casuale potrà così sperimentare, nella contemplazione di un’area verde di opere d’arte in
divenire, un’attesa benefica che stimola la creatività e apre spazi di pensiero, dà vita a suggestioni e
immaginari possibili. Si viene così a creare uno spazio sociale, un luogo d’incontro, di confronto e
discussione nel tempo dell’attesa come spazio del pensiero e di ricerca.
Con questo tipo di intervento, sia espositivo che teorico, si vuole indagare sul rapporto che sussiste tra
materiale e immateriale, presenza e assenza, all’interno di una ricerca ormai pluriventennale.
* Giuseppe Penone, nato il 3 aprile 1947, è un’artista italiano. Ha iniziato a lavorare professionalmente nel
1968 nella foresta di Garessio, vicino a dove è nato. E 'il membro più giovane del movimento italiano
"Arte Povera". Il lavoro di Penone si occupa di stabilire un contatto tra uomo e natura. I suoi lavori sono
stati esposti nei più importanti musei d'arte moderna di tutto il mondo.

Elisa Bollazzi intervista MicroCollection
Elisa Bollazzi: Ci può raccontare come e quando è nata Microcollection?
Microcollection: Microcollection nasce nel maggio 1990 quando, in visita al Padiglione Inglese della Biennale di
Venezia, quasi per caso, ho pensato di raccogliere alcuni frammenti di una meravigliosa opera di Anish Kapoor, finiti
accidentalmente sul pavimento. Queste microparticelle, dimenticate dai più, hanno rappresentato una vera e propria
svolta, un’illuminazione e l’inizio di un nuovo modo di muovermi di galleria in galleria, di museo in museo, nei
circuiti dell’arte italiani ed internazionali, alla ricerca di nuove microacquisizioni che sarebbero andate altrimenti
distrutte.
EB: Quanti frammenti possiede ora Microcollection?
M: Più di 700, grazie alla mia perseveranza e al prezioso aiuto di artisti, collezionisti, amici che costantemente mi
inviano microparticelle d’arte da tutto il mondo.

EB: Come utilizza queste acquisizioni e donazioni?
M: Archiviati e montati su comuni vetrini da laboratorio, i frammenti sono visibili a microscopio, durante Cabinets de
Regard itineranti, durante i quali gli spettatori possono vedere l’invisibile e assaporare la vera essenza dell’arte. Dal
1990 sono state esposte le principali tendenze della storia dell’arte contemporanea durante speciali Cabinets de regard in
Italia e all’estero: Esperienze Concettuali, L’Arte Italiana del secondo ‘900, Anish Kapoor, Lucio Fontana, MicroItalics, etc.
EB: Un modo leggero di veicolare l’arte, quindi !
M: Certamente e anche un modo per aiutare la gente a percepire l’invisibile, l’immateriale e a diventare consapevoli
della libertà creativa, non solo attraverso la diretta visione dei frammenti della collezione, ma anche tramite il
racconto, la memoria e la suggestione che questi stimolano nell’ immaginario collettivo.
EB: Mi può elencare alcuni artisti e movimenti artistici della collezione?
M: Fluxus, Pop Art, Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, Burri, Fontana, Gilardi, Mondino, Penone, Paolini,
Beuys, Buren, Tony Cragg, Richard Long, etc.
Microcollection costituisce un patrimonio di grande valore artistico-culturale.
EB: Ci parli del suo nuovo progetto artistico: le Semine d’arte.
M: Ho recentemente sviluppato un’intuizione che sedimentavo da anni sull’essenza vera dell’arte, dando vita ad un
nuovo progetto di arte pubblica: la creazione di una lottizzazione di terreni e spazi verdi seminati e coltivati ad arte,
con preziosi frammenti di opere i cui titoli ne mostrano il criterio di selezione utilizzato: L’albero di 3 metri di
Giuseppe Penone, Angurie di Piero Gilardi, Garden di Paul McCarthy, Phosphorescentes Yellow Roses di Jeanne
Silverthorne, etc.
EB: Dove?
M: A Bolzano, Milano, Torino, Basilea etc. Nel 2010 nel cortile interno del Castello di Jerago in provincia di Varese
con Aiuola d’attesa, una semina di frammenti di importanti opere d’arte della collezione: accanto all’area seminata la
panca semicircolare Zante di Saporiti Italia, una seduta meditativa che invita alla riflessione.
EB: Qual è il vero significato di Aiuola d’attesa?
M: Aiuola d’attesa è uno spazio sociale, un luogo d’incontro, di confronto e discussione nel tempo dell’attesa come
spazio del pensiero e di ricerca.
EB: Qual è il collegamento tra la raccolta e la semina di frammenti di opere d’arte ?
M: Questa semina d’arte attiva una dinamica di restituzione fisica dei frammenti prelevati negli anni in una
simbologia trasparente molto chiara, ma oltre all’aspetto di prelievo e dono, di prendere e dare, il progetto si
focalizza sull’aspetto dell’attesa. Un’attesa benefica che serve a stimolare la creatività e ad aprire spazi di pensiero, dar
vita a suggestioni e immaginari possibili nella contemplazione di un’area verde di opere d’arte in divenire.
