el giugno dello scorso anno il varo del primo
esemplare. All’inizio del 2014, esattamente il 22
gennaio, quello del secondo. È partito subito forte
l’ultimo modello di Southern Wind Shipyard che con
l’SW 82 ha ripreso, dopo una pausa di sei anni, la
produzione di scafi sui 24 metri. Così, ritornando al
calendario, se il 5 luglio 2013 scendeva in mare Feelin’ Good, appunto
primo SW 82 realizzato nella versione RS, ecco che lo scorso gennaio
era la volta di Grande Orazio, versione Flush Deck del progetto
firmato da Farr Yacht Design per le linee d’acqua e da Nauta Design
per general concept, exterior e interior design.
«Il nuovo SW 82», spiega l’ingegner Willy Persico, fondatore del
cantiere di Cape Town, «è per un armatore con la voglia di correre.
Presenta così, oltre alla impostazione Flush Deck, molte differenze

rispetto al primo della serie». Fermo restando la costruzione generale
in fibra di carbonio, kevlar, epoxy e corecell su stampo femmina in tre
moduli, ecco allora un elenco di soluzioni tecniche decisamente
corsaiole. «Prima fra tutte», prosegue l’ingegner Persico, «una nuova
chiglia di nuovo disegno e più profonda di 20 centimetri rispetto al
capostipite della nuova Mini serie (su Feelin’ Good il pescaggio è di 4
metri) che fa, tra l’altro, aumentare pescaggio e il momento
raddrizzante. Sempre in tema di superfici immerse abbiamo anche
sviluppato un nuovo timone più sottile e performante. A questi,
nell’attrezzatura, si aggiungono un albero e un boma Southern Spars
in carbonio alto modulo e il sartiame in EC6+. Sempre per l’albero,
che è rastremato, è stato allungato il crane per avere una randa più
allunata e c’e un lock per la trinchetta. E ancora, il bompresso è
amovibile così come il pulpito di prua che può essere sostituito con
uno da regata che permette un migliore utilizzo del Code 0».
Molte anche le novità in coperta del nuovo SW 82, che presenta
comunque la consueta organizzazione con il pozzetto ospiti centrale
che immette nel salone sottocoperta e quello di manovra, preceduto da
un ampio spazio prendisole e seguito da un’altrettanto ampia zona di
ponte libero, a poppa. Nel pozzetto di manovra, oltre a una batteria di
winch tutti primari, troviamo i comandi del sistema elettrico
posizionato sottocoperta, che controlla il punto di scotta sulla rotaia
della randa, mentre, ancora in tema di punti di scotta, quelli del genoa
sono regolati da due pistoni idraulici (sempre interni) che muovono il
passascotte sulla rotaia in coperta. «Una serie di interventi», prosegue
Persico, «che hanno esaltato le qualità del progetto e che, come tutta la
barca, sono stati testati nelle circa 7000 miglia del trasferimento che le
nostre barche compiono per raggiungere l’Europa. Un test severo».

The first example was launched last June.
In early 2014 - January 22, to be precise
- the second hit the water. The latest
model from the Southern Wind Shipyard
has got off to a flying start, and with the
SW 82 the company has ended a six-year
hiatus by rebooting production of the
24-metre craft.
On 5 July 2013 it was Feelin' Good, the
first RS version of the SW 82, that was
first to be launched, followed by Grande
Orazio last January. Grande Orazio is the
Flush Deck version of the yacht, with
waterlines by Farr Yacht Design and
general concept, exterior and interior
design by Nauta Design.
"The new SW 82," says engineer Willy
Persico, founder of the Cape Town yard,
"is for an owner who wants to run, not
walk, so the flush deck is just one of the
differences between this and the first
series." Apart from the general structure
in carbon fibre, kevlar, epoxy and corecell
on a female mould in three modules, there
is also a series of fleet-footed technical
solutions. "Above all," Persico continues,
"the newly-designed keel is twenty
centimetres deeper than the first of the
new Miniseries - Feelin' Good has a
draught of four metres. Among other
things, this increases draught and righting
moment.
Still in the context of wetted surfaces, we
have also developed a new rudder,
slimmer and more high-performance. As
for the rig, there's a Southern Spars high
modulus carbon mast and boom and EC6+
rigging. The mast is tapered, and the
crane has been lengthened to create a
more roached mainsail, and there's a
staysail lock. The bowsprit is removable,
as is the bowsprit, which can be replaced
by a racing version that enables a more
efficient use of the Code 0."
The new SW 82 also features many
innovations on deck, although it presents
the usual layout with the midships guest
cockpit providing access to the
below-deck saloon, plus the working
cockpit, preceded by a large sunbathing
area and followed by an equally spacious
free deck space aft.

Test che Grande Orazio ha concluso senza alcun problema avendo a
bordo anche il proprio armatore che, accanto a una serie di scelte
“corsaiole”, ha voluto per la sua barca anche molte soluzioni di
comodità negli allestimenti interni. «Rispetto a Feelin’ Good», spiega
Mario Pedol di Nauta Design, «le differenze sono notevoli. L’armatore
ha infatti voluto una vera e propria suite». Per realizzarla, lo studiolo,
che su Feelin’ Good prolungava verso prua l’open space del salone, è
chiuso. Si è così ottenuta una zona padronale che, oltre allo studio
trasformabile in una cabina singola, è composta da un bagno con vano
doccia separato e dalla cabina vera e propria dotata di una tv a
scomparsa Crystal Clear Magic Mirror. La nuova organizzazione non
ha comunque interessato la matrimoniale per gli ospiti a prua del
living e non ha intaccato il senso di spazio che domina nel salone. Un
ambiente organizzato con il tavolo da pranzo a sinistra e la zona
conversazione con il divano, rivestito come tutte le sedute in pelle
Poltrona Frau, a dritta.
«E qui», prosegue Mario Pedol, «c’è la seconda novità. La zona
carteggio, che sul primo SW 82 era collocata a poppa, di fronte alla
discesa dal pozzetto di manovra, è invece nel salone a dritta, accanto
al divano». Anche su Grande Orazio, la fibra di carbonio non manca
in alcuni elementi interni, come i tientibene, così come nelle sedie
firmate Lairs a sottolineare il materiale di costruzione
dell’imbarcazione, ma anche a costituire un elemento grafico inserito
nei toni chiari delle paratie, degli arredi e dei tessuti di bordo Romo
Design Fabrics. La scelta di spostare nel living la zona navigazione ha
permesso di intervenire anche a poppa del salone. Invariate la cabina
doppia per gli ospiti, a sinistra, e la cucina posizionata lungo la
murata di dritta, la nuova compartimentazione presenta un locale
tecnico tra cucina e ingresso nel living e un secondo bagno per le due
cabine dell’equipaggio. Uno spazio molto utile perché attrezzato con

Persico, "that has enhanced the
design quality, and, like the entire
yacht, has been tested during the
7,000-mile transfer our yachts
complete to arrive in Europe. It's a
challenging test!"
A challenge that Grande Orazio
passed with no problem. Also on
board was the yacht's owner, who as
well as opting for a series of "sprint"
choices, also selected interior
features that provide greatly
increased levels of comfort.
"Compared to Feelin’ Good," Nauta
Design's Mario Pedol explains,
"There are some significant
differences. The owner wanted a
fully-fledged suite!"

closed off. This has made room for an
owner's area that comprises the
study that can be transformed into a
single cabin, a bathroom with
separate shower stall and the cabin
itself, with concealed Crystal Clear
Magic Mirror TV.
The new layout didn't involve the
guest double forward of the living
area and has not impinged on the
sense of space that dominates in the
saloon. The space is laid out with
dining table to port and the
conversation zone with sofa,
upholstered, like all the seating, in
Poltrona Frau leather, to starboard.
"And here," says Pedol, "is where we

see the second innovation. The chart
area, which on the first SW 82 was
located aft, opposite the steps down
from the sailing cockpit, is now on
the starboard side of the saloon, next
to the sofa."
Carbon fibre also features liberally
on Grande Orazio in some of the
interior elements like the grabrails
and the Lairs chairs, reflecting the
yacht's structural material, and
creating a graphic element among
the light colours of the bulwarks,
furnishings and Romo Design fabrics.
The decision to shift the navigation
zone to the lounge also allowed the
yard to work aft of the saloon. The
double guest cabin to port and the
galley along the starboard bulkhead
remain unchanged, but the new
configuration includes a technical
space between the galley and lounge
entrance, and a second bathroom for
the two crew cabins. It's a very
useful space, as it is equipped with
an oilskin dryer.
"She's a big, little yacht," Willy
Persico concludes. "As we have
applied the same build concepts,
fitting out methods and systems
installations to this SW 82 as we use
on our 100-foot models. Grande
Orazio is yet another demonstration
of our ability to interpret the
semi-custom idea. And this ability is
producing results. This May we're
launching a 102' Raised Saloon
version (actually, a 104' overall), and
in South Africa we've begun
construction of a fourth 102-footer,
also a Raised Saloon. It's due to be
launched in spring 2015. The
construction of a third SW 82 could
begin in a few months' time, while
January 2015 will see the
completion of the third SW 94.
Finally, we're ready to start on the
new 115-foot yacht. So we'll be
working non-stop, and the owners
who call us are happy - including the
owner of Grande Orazio!"

semicustom. Ed è una capacità che dà i suoi frutti. Questo mese di
maggio, infatti, variamo un 102' (in effetti un 104' fuori tutto) nella
versione Raised Saloon e abbiamo cominciato la costruzione in
Sudafrica di un quarto 102', anche questo Raised Saloon, con varo
previsto per la primavera 2015. Inoltre, la costruzione di un terzo SW
82 potrebbe partire nell’arco di pochi mesi, mentre per gennaio 2015
sarà completata la costruzione del terzo esemplare dell'SW 94. Per
finire siamo pronti a partire con il nuovo 115 piedi. Insomma si lavora
a ritmo continuo e gli armatori che ci chiamano sono soddisfatti.
