■ Interview with Paolo Dionisi oil and gas, being the UAE the world’s fifth producer, other sources have been developed, such as tourism, services, agriculture, building, renewable energy sources, education and culture. A lot of tourists visit the United Arab Emirates. On holiday, people want to enjoy some free time with their families. They need to feel safe and public safety for us is a top priority. We have severe laws and punishments are laid down by law and strictly applied. As regards tourism, the UAE can offer a wide range of top quality services, from airport services and airlines - Emirates Airlines and Etihad – to the high standards of accommodation facilities. Besides that, hotels and restaurants personnel are qualified and very polite. In our shopping centers you can find almost everything to buy. Then there are cafés, restaurants and a selection of items from the best brands in the world. People can travel to the Emirates twelve months a year, even in summer, when temperature reaches 50° because we have conditioned areas and cool swimming pools. In Dubai we also have an indoor ski resort, with the world’s first black run. A new one will be built in Abu Dhabi and a third one is planned to be built in Al Ain, at one hour’s drive from Dubai. Finally, I want to refer to the quality of our environment; we have a crystalline sea and the charming desert with its spectacular views. What are the ranges of temperature in Winter? From December to February there’s a minimum temperature of 16 degrees, while the maximum is 26. The best months are from March to end of May and from October to late November, which have the mildest temperatures. In summer temperatures rise to 40 degrees. How do we get to the UAE from Italy? There are two international airports – in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Airlines serve Dubai with daily routes from Rome, Milan and Venice. Etihad flies from Milan to Dubai only three days a week, but the service is going to be extended to a daily route. At the end of 2009 a new airport will be operating in Jebel Ali – midway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It will be entitled to the reigning family of Dubay, Al Maktoum, and it will be one of the world’s biggest Ambassador of Italy in the United Arab Emirates ged 42, Paolo Dionisi is one of the youngest ambassadors in Italy. Born in Rome, he began his career as a diplomat in 1991 when he started working at the Farnesina with important assignments at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then he moved to Bonn, in Germany, and eventually to Lebanon, where he met his future wife. They now have two daughters and Dionisi – named Ambassador of Italy in the United Arab Emirates in December 2005 – tells us about his brilliant career, both abroad and in Italy, where he had been entrusted with several appointments at the Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, the Italian Cabinet, for the Prime Minister. He’s been serving in Abu Dhabi since July 2006. Please, tell us about your brilliant career as a diplomat. Well, my father worked in a bank as a branch manager and when I was 14 or 15 I told him I wanted to be a diplomat. He supported me and one day he brought me a copy of the Official Gazette that stated the terms of the competition. I have to admit that, at that time, I didn’t understand a word of that announcement. A few years later, at the University, I took up Political Science at the Università La Sapienza in Rome where I got my degree at the age of 21. After serving as an officer in the army, I dedicated myself heart and soul to the competition for diplomat. I passed the examination in September 1990. I was very determined and moved by a strong passion in trying to reach my aim – I took this from my father who unfortunately passed away when I was twenty, so he couldn’t see my dreams come true.” A young ambassador for a young country. This country was born in 1971. As a federation of states, the United Arab Emirates was formed on December 2nd 1971 when the six Emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Quwain and Fujairah - agreed to join and enter into a union. A seventh state, Ras Al Khaimah, joined later, on February 10th 1972. It has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world - $ 46,147. The United Arab Emirates also invested according to a wise diversification of economic resources; besides the traditional income from A FreeTime 8 ambasciate airports, with six landing strips and a hundred passengers every year. Abu Dhabi is the main, richest emirate with over 95 per cent of oil production in the Arab Emirates and contributing to the federal economy for 74 per cent. Dubai is also famous for its town planning development and the latest innovative projects such as the artificial islands – The Palm, The World and The Universe - and the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai, to be built in the next few years. What does your activity as an Ambassador of Italy in the UAE consist of? Since I have started my service as ambassador, being appointed by the Italian Government, I have tried to take advantage of the great opportunities that the United Arab Emirates can offer, regarding business and local economy. There are many Italian companies that surely have seen a big potential in opening their business to the UAE. In the last year and a half, we are witnessing a growing interest of Italy towards the Emirates, to a large extent. There has been a growing number of visits from Italian institutional delegations and the Prime Minister was in Dubai last November, after thirty-five years of bilateral diplomatic relations. Also the job orders to Italian companies have reached an amount of over ⇔ 4.5 billions, almost doubling the last eight years’ turnover. Yet, there’s still much to be done, and the UAE are looking forward to further cooperating with Italy in the next future. What is so charming of Italy for the UAE? They love our culture. They know exactly that Italy owns one third of the world’s artistic legacy, according to the Unesco. They also trust our people, for Italians are known as reliable and skilled business partners, with a hint of creativity that makes the dif- ference. They are also interested in our people’s characters and to all Italian traditions and values they find very close to their own believes. And then they adore our taste for fashion, food and design. There’s an Italian Academy for Culinary Arts which can count members of the royal family as proud associates. There’s a real passion in the UAE for the Italian cooking. Which is the most appreciated Italian dish? I would say pasta in general. The flavours and scents of Italy are not so much different from those of the Arabian tradition. In the UAE there are over forty Italian chefs that we have managed to put together in order to create this association. It’s a good way of promoting their professional qualities outside the borders of Italy. All’interno sorgeranno ville molto raffinate. ■ turismo Abu Dhabi The richest city in the world ne of the world’s most modern cities, Abu Dhabi can be compared to a heaven friendly welcoming tourists and residents. The President of Egypt, the King of Malaysia, the President of Jordan, the King of Swaziland and former US President George Bush senior. How was your professional career? I worked with Inter-Continental Group for over 30 years and then to have the opportunity to join the Emirates Palace was the highlight of my career. I formerly worked in places like Hong Kong, Bangkok in Thailand and from 1988 to 1990 in Abu Dhabi. The Intercontinental Hotel used to be the Government Hotel at that time. Now since 3,5 years of the Emirates Palace, this is the official Government Guests Palace Hotel. I also worked in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Greece (also responsible for Turkey, Cyprus and Malta) and Vienna where I was responsible for Central and Eastern Europe. And then I went to Seoul in Korea. When did your career start? I started when I was 16 as a waiter and as a cook, I did my internship. I started from scratch. I then went through all the steps within the hotel industry, from the roles of waiter and cook to all administration positions. I graduated with a Diploma in Hotel Management at the Hotel School in Bad Reichenhall, turismo Germany and obtained a Diploma as a Hotel Economist at the School of Hotel Administration for Business Management in Berlin. I then continued my studies at the Cornell University in New York, an institution well-known for providing excellent training for leaders/senior executives in the hospitality industry. In spite of my long working experience I am only 55 and still young! What are the most exclusive location in the hotel and most exclusive services offered by the Emirates Palace Hotel? I think the hotel itself is very exclusive, just mindblowing. If you really want to chill out and relax, you have our two exclusive swimming pools, each of which includes its own restaurant, for the exclusive use of registered guests, four tennis courts and a special children’s club. The Emirates Palace is located on a 1.3 km stretch of private sandy beach. As well, it offers an amazing culinary experience, we have two absolutely rewarded restaurants, the Sayad – Pacific Rim Seafood. It is a fusion of Asia with the Middle East concept. Then we have the best Italian Restaurant Mezzaluna, with its Italian chef Luigi. And it is really fantastic. It is not that you only enjoy the fantastic food. I think these two restaurants you have to see also from the architectural point of view, their design, it is like a palace with the high ceiling and Swarovski chandeliers. Then we have a fabulous Lebanese Restaurant Diwan L’Auberge and the Iranian Restaurant Anar. The fairy-tale atmosphere at the hotel is increased by the “water play of the fountains” around the hotel changing the colours in the night. The domes are changing their colours as well. Something really exquisite we have is the Anantara Spa which is Thai Group. It is made in Moroccan design and Thai style decorations. We have 20 therapists from Thailand. It is composed of seven treatment rooms equipped with steam showers, hammam and Jacuzzi whirlpool baths and also includes a special area devoted to the sale of Spa’s own brand of exclusive natural products. The hotel’s flagship is the “Rolls Royce Royal Golf Package”. By booking this package the guests will enjoy a Rolls Royce transfer from the airport to the hotel for the accommodation and then will be driven in Rolls Royce to the Abu Dhabi Golf Club where, once again, they will use the special Rolls Royce-designed golf carts. In a few months another exclusive facility will be completed, the marina port in the hotel bay that will include a parking lot for over 170 boats. Visitors can spend their time at the Havana Club, Cigar Lounge Bar or at the Embassy Club, a unique place opened just one month ago. The Embassy Club is very well-known night spot in London and it has now been joint-ventured with Abu Dhabi Emirates Palace. Only 5 star hotels host clubs like this. The evening starts in the club with a fine dinner prepared by Michelin-Star Chef. At about midnight the restaurant turns into a private lounge with disco music playing until 4 am. It is very selective and only reserved to its own members and registered guests. It is open during the local weekends, that is Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the evenings. A staff of 47 nationalities is employed at the hotel. The number of our dependants is about 2000. The hotel has 394 rooms among which 92 suites and 8 Rulers suites reserved to Heads of State. How would you define the Emirates Palace? Overwhelming, breathtaking, exciting, like one thousand and one night, pure luxury, the ultimate service and standard, the best place to be. Abu Dhabi aims at becoming the meeting place of global culture. The Emirates Palace is now hosting an exhibition of the project Saadiyat Island, “island of happiness”, in Abu Dhabi, an island where a complete multicultural hub is being developed. How much does a room at the Emirates Palace cost, from the lowest to the highest rates? The most expensive suite is about 15.000 USD while the simplest rooms start from 300 USD. It depends on the type of the room. It took 3 years to build this hotel, about 20 thousand people have been involved and about 2.2 billion USD have been spent, the highest sum ever spent in the world. Today it plays a prominent role: it is the government hotel hosting all the official delegations coming from all over the world. ■ FreeTime 17 turismo Saadiyat Island L’isola della felicità Saadiyat Island. Saadiyat Island is being developed into the most outstanding visitor and residential destination in the world. Island represents one of the most important development opportunities in Abu Dhabi’s history. In 2004, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) embarked on a vision of developing Saadiyat Island into a world-class, environmentally sensitive tourist destination that included as its centrepiece the creation of a new cultural district for Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. This vision was translated into a Masterplan through the appointment of the USA’s Gensler Associates and under UAE Law No:12, the establishment of a wholly-owned public joint stock company, the Tourism Development Investment Company (TDIC). The massive project includes the construction of the commercial and residential properties, resort hotels, recreational facilities, nature preserves, and perhaps most significantly, the idea to create a cluster of world class cultural facilities and institutions that would be operated in partnership with established museums and performing arts institutions from around the world. Abu Dhabi had embarked on one of the most ambitious urban and cultural development projects ever conceived. The guiding principles for the Cultural District are to make it a destination everyone in the worlds of art and culture would want to visit. This will be achieved by building a series of permanent institutions – museums, performing arts centres, exhibition halls, educational institutions in the arts – that through its collections, architecture and programmes will become one of the greatest concentrations of cultural experiences anywhere in the world. Saadiyat Island will be developed in three phases with total completion scheduled for 2018. The masterplan envisages six highly individual districts and includes 29 hotels, including an iconic 7-star property, three marinas with combined berths for around 1,000 boats, museums and cultural centres, two golf courses, civic and leisure facilities, sea-view apartments and elite villas. Saadiyat Island is expected to be home to a commu- A FreeTime 21 turismo nity of more than 150,000 people - the same population size as Chang Mai in Thailand, Oxford in the UK or Hollywood in the USA. Saadiyat Island will be linked to the main Abu Dhabi Island and the Abu Dhabi mainland via two, 10-lane freeways making the destination easily accessible to Abu Dhabi International Airport, which will be just a 25 kilometre drive away. Cultural District Will be home to five major cultural institutions designed by the world’s most renowned architects and a Biennale Park setting with 19 pavilions designed to host international art and cultural fairs and events. Five Cultural Institutions • The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi designed by the architect Frank Gehry • The Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel • The Performing Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid • The Maritime Museum by Tadao Ando • The Sheikh Zayed National Museum Saadiyat Beach will also be home to the first of two championship golf courses planned for Saadiyat Island. The championship golf course will be designed by Gary Player and will be the first in the Arabian Gulf with several beach-front holes. It is also the first in the UAE to be designed by the South African who is acknowledged as the most successful international golfer of all time, and whose career includes three Masters wins, three British Open titles, two PGA championships and the US Open title to complete the Grand Slam. The Louvre Abu Dhabi Is going to be one of several iconic museums. The governments of Abu Dhabi and the Republic of France have entered into an unprecedented 30-year cultural accord which will see the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum created within the Cultural District of the Island. “This is a major achievement in Abu Dhabi’s vision to become a world-class destination bridging global cultures,” said His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. “This accord further strengthens international dialogue, which will embrace all cultures. This opportunity provides for long-term loans from the Louvre and major French museums such as the Musee du Quai Branley, Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee d’Orsay, Versailles, Guimet, Rodin and the Reunion des Musees Nationaux (RMN). Temporary exhibitions will also be organised annually in the Louvre Abu Dhabi and will be included in the programme of international exhibitions exchanged between major museums worldwide. The 24,000 square metres Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will have 6,000 square metres of galleries devoted to permanent displays and 2,000 square metres for temporary exhibitions, is expected to open in 2012. The galleries will open to the public in successive phases. Louvre Abu Dhabi is designed by award-winning turismo French architect Jean Nouvel, the designer behind the Musee du Quai Branley, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Opera de Lyon. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the New York-based Guggenheim Foundation to establish a world-class museum devoted to modern and contemporary art. To be called the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (GAD), the museum, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, will position the emirate as a leading international cultural destination. At 30,000 square metres, the Abu Dhabi museum will be the only Guggenheim museum in the region and will be larger than any existing Guggenheim worldwide. The museum will form its own major collection of contemporary art and will also exhibit masterworks from the Guggenheim Foundation’s global collections. Will be a centre for art and technology, a centre for contemporary Islamic culture, a children’s art education facility, archives library and research centre and a state of the art conservation laboratory. According to the MOU, Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), which manages the authority’s tourism assets, will own the museum. The Guggenheim Foundation will establish and manage the museum’s programme, which will include collection development, exhibitions and educational initiatives. Abu Dhabi’s museum will join a highly exclusive Guggenheim museum network which currently includes New York, Venice in Italy, Bilbao in Spain, Berlin in Germany and Las Vegas. The prize-winning architect Frank Gehry was appointed to design the museum. Gehry is also the architect of the celebrated Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Performing Arts Centre Designed by Zaha Hadid will house five theatres – a music hall, concert hall, opera house, drama theatre and a flexible theatre with a combined seating capacity for 6.300. This beautiful 62 metre high centre will also have an Academy of Performing Arts. Maritime Museum Designed by Tadao Ando, museum concept takes its inspiration from Abu Dhabi’s natural surroundings, landscape and maritime traditions. It has a reflective surface visually merging sea and land. Its ship-like interior has floating decks which guide visitors through the exhibition space. Biennale Park Is to host alternating bi-annual art, architecture festivals and art fairs in 19 pavilions which will showcase a range of art and cultural activities over the year. The pavilions will be designed by some of today’s leading architects as Yuri Avvakumov from Russia, Khalid Alnajjar from UAE, Greg Lynn from USA, David Adjaye from UK, Pei-Zhu from China, Seung H-Sang from Korea and many others. Sheikh Zayed National Museum The overall intent of the museum is to create a new national museum that honours the late H.H.Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and provides a beacon to the world, inspiring visitors to take up the call to personal leadership and responsibility as exemplified by the late ruler’s life and work. The appointed architect of the museum will be the winner of the design competition that was announced in early 2007. ■ FreeTime 23 mostre Alla ricerca dell'arte OTTOCENTO. Nonetheless, he was so accomplished at representing the universal unrest of his century that a wide-ranging public recognises and appreciates his work. The exhibition shows a collection of his works and its completeness and precision put it in the same light as other important international tributes to Francis Bacon.Because of the way it has been conceived, this exhibition represents a unique opportunity to get to know Francis Bacon’s production: it allows an overall approach to his artistic development, which covers more than half a century, by revealing, through mostly new material, special and absolutely original aspects of his creativity. The works come from the most important Museums and collections worldwide, and in special way from France, Belgium, Great Britain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, Israel, the U.S.A., Venezuela, Mexico, Japan, Australia and Taiwan. A unique opportunity to relive the history of Venice from its historical origins to the splendours of the eighteenth century. It is in the pictorial art that we most vividly capture the typically Venetian joy of life and the art of living, narrated by the exhibition-event The Wonders of Venice hosted at Palazzo della Torre. Here we find the most famous masters boasted by the Serenissima - from Canaletto to Bellotto, from Marieschi to Guardi, from Marco and Sebastiano Ricci to Giambattista and Lorenzo Tiepolo, Zuccarelli and Longhi. They celebrate a Venice as sumptuous as it is secret: all the masterpieces, over 120 works, never exhibited in museums until now, coming from private collections only.
