After high school, Albini attended the Polytechnic University of Milan, graduating in 1929. He kicked off his career as a Gio Ponti professional worker and employee. Over the years, many of his rattan designs have become very famous, like the Margherita and Gala chair, shown today in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Albini won three Compasso d’Oro awards, the most prestigious in all of Italy, during his career. In 1933 he won the silver medal at the 5th Milan Triennale with his project for a “Minimal House”. Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, Borsani produced a large body of work including a variety of furniture, cabinets and seating. In 1953, together with his brother Fulgencio, he founded a firm called Tecno which became known for its technology and researchbased approach to furniture design. During his long and successful career, Osvaldo Borsani always had an approach of deep respect to the word “design”, involving this discipline a new way of thinking and build. He created a sort of integrated design system with the intervention and help of different knowledges. As stated in 1973, for an interview to Ottagono Magazine, he believed that “we are not made to work in the area of the understood and of the certainties, we seek new ways”. A veteran of the first world war, he was a central figure in Italy's cultural renaissance of the 1950s. During his long career, the Milanese architect and designer designed a wide range of objects destined for the most diverse settings: lamps, tables, chairs, kitchen tools, the interiors of transatlantic ships and the sets of theater plays, churches, university buildings, offices, and skyscrapers. Here is a consolle (1964) from the original furniture of the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome: a piece of true modernity. Taking the motifs already experienced in Sorrento in the homonymous Hotel and for the same client (the Neapolitan entrepreneur Roberto Fernandes), Ponti realized an hotel characterized by a newly form and functionality, modern in lines and essential, intended to accommodate a high number of customers. The project involved the realization of two hundred rooms in addition to restaurants and reception areas for over a thousand people. The common areas were concatenated with one another, creating uninterrupted visual, with the aid of mirrors that spread the light and widened illusively the environments. The decoration of the rooms’ and Hotel’s furnitures were produced by Cassina on special design by Ponti. The floors inside the rooms were covered by special ceramic tiles on green, black and white colors. The structure was externally covered in travertine and ceramic mosaics in green dominant color. EUROPEAN DESIGN 37 GIO PONTI E RICHARD GINORI By 1923, the young Gio Ponti became art director for the ceramics manufacturer Richard Ginori. Here Ponti fused the old and the new with his designs for modern plates with classical motifs, introducing high standards of quality control: for him, there was no contradiction between the craft of the artisan and the industrial process. His ceramics inspired by Etruscan frescoes and Greek myth were shown first at the 1923 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Monza. "Industry is the style of the 20th century, its mode of creation," he wrote - an idea that would define Italian design of the postwar period. 42 GIO PONTI (1891-1979) Vase, 1930's glazed ceramic, w 20 x d 20 x h 17 cm model 5800, with decoration mod. 5769, type 1, 19-T 4 colors on white plate Production: Richard Ginori € 1.400 – 1.800 38 43 GIO PONTI (1891-1979) Four chairs, 1950's wood, w 94 x d 45 x h 45 cm To be restored € 1.400 – 1.900 EUROPEAN DESIGN 39 44 GUIDO ANDLOVITZ (1900-1971) Vase Monza glazed, mirrored ceramic, Ø 28 x h 40 cm € 800 – 1.100 45 ITALIAN WORK Two vases, 1950 ceramic, w 20 x d 12 x h 37 cm, w 12 x d 16 x h 20 cm Production: Ariele Limited serial number: 128; marked € 500 – 550 40 46 ITALIAN WORK Floor lamp, 1960 polished metal, h 157 cm Production: Reggiani € 600 – 700 47 SERGIO MAZZA (1931) Ceiling lamp Delta grande, 1960 glass, brushed aluminium, Ø 40 x h 36 cm Production: Artemide € 600 – 800 EUROPEAN DESIGN 41 48 ITALIAN WORK Wall lamp, 1960 polished metal, h 120 cm Production: Reggiani € 600 – 650 49 ITALIAN WORK Floor lamp, 1960 painted and polished metal, flexible arm, h 110 cm € 600 – 650 42 50 ITALIAN WORK Floor lamp, 1950 polished metal, h 180 cm € 600 – 700 EUROPEAN DESIGN 43 GIANFRANCO FRATTINI After graduating from Milan Polytechnic with a degree in Architecture in 1953, Gianfranco Frattini joined Gio Ponti's studio. Collaborating with Cassina, and later with Arteluce, Artemide, Bernini, Fontana Arte and Knoll International, Frattini quickly gained a reputation for the ability to adapt his designs to the requirements of specific spaces. In 1956, Frattini co-founded ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale), an organisation of manufacturers, designers, academics and associated professionals, whose aim was to help promote, protect and further the cause of Italian design. Being a great connoisseur of wood craftsmanship, Frattini became Internationally renowned for his architectural projects and interior designs, as well as for his furniture and lights. Born in Innsbruck in 1917, Sottsass studied architecture in Turin, Italy, and opened his first studio in Milan in 1947, where he concentrated mainly on architectural and design projects. He worked as a design consultant for Olivetti from 1958 to 1980, creating the Elea 9003 calculator and the popular portable red typewriter, released on Valentine’s Day in 1969. His role of fundamental innovator of the language of contemporary design was recognized on an international level from the early 1960s onward, with his participation in individual and collective exhibitions in the most prestigious museums. Portrait of Ettore Sottsass “With my work in the end I try to be the least modern possible, and as timeless and spaceless as possible to get people to acknowledge the presence of objects.” (Sottsass, 1964) 52 For two series in the late 1960s—Tantra, 1968, and Yantra, 1969—Sottsass looked to Hindu spiritualism for inspiration, translating tantric diagrams into ceramic vessels. Rendered in three dimensions, the concentric circles and triangles echo the steps of a ziggurat, or the radiating, reverberating forms of art deco. 64 ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) Vase Yantra Y28, 1969 glazed ceramic, Ø 50 x h 50 cm Production: Bitossi Signed on the bottom € 1.200 – 1.250 65 ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) Vase Yantra Y15, 1969 glazed ceramic, w 25 x h 65 cm Production: Bitossi Signed on the bottom € 800 – 1.000 EUROPEAN DESIGN 53 66 ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) Vase Yantra Y31, 1969 glazed ceramic, w 50 x h 50 cm Production: Bitossi Signed on the bottom € 800 – 1.000 The "Fischietto" series began in 1962 in very limited quantities. Remarkably minimal and distinctive examples from "Fischietto" appeared in "Domus" several times in the early 1960's. These later versions have a similar but softer form and was only created in sky blue with navy trim. An impressive, charming and affordable example of Sottsass' post-Memphis work. 67 ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) Ceramiche a fischietto, set of two ceramic vases, 1990 ceramic, h 40 cm, h 14 cm Production: Special edition of Habitat € 300 – 350 54 68 69 ITALIAN WORK ITALIAN WORK Industrial plate, first half 20th century stained wood, 35 x h 60 cm Industrial plate, first half 20th century stained wood, 35 x h 60 cm € 180 – 200 € 180 – 200 70 71 ITALIAN WORK ITALIAN WORK Vase, 1980 glazed ceramic, Ø 30 x h 30 cm Production: Cappellini Marked Vase, 1980 ceramic, Ø 10 x h 70 cm Production: Habitat € 200 – 250 € 200 – 250 EUROPEAN DESIGN 55 GAE AULENTI Gae Aulenti graduated in 1953 from the Politecnico di Milano, and from 1955 to 1965 began to work on the editorial team of Casabella-Continuità, under Ernesto Rogers. Using native birch wood and plywood and his own new bentwood techniques, Aalto created his classic Lounge Chair, the curvilinear Wood Screen designed for the Finnish Pavilion and his iconic stacking stool. This piece represents his virtuosity with form and structure and firmly established Aalto's genius and fluency with wood. As a sculptor and woodcarver, Wirkkala's designs for glass, ceramics and metal all reflect his passion for the natural forms of the harsh landscape of his native Finland. The 'Kantarelli' vase takes its name and shape from the chanterelle mushroom. It is one of the great pieces of Scandinavian design and won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale exhibition in 1951. This piece is one of the first of two numbered series of 50 vases made by the Finnish Iittala glassworks (controllare il nostro numero di serie) The factory later made some un- numbered runs and other variations on the design. “Rings, rings and rhytms. Whirls in a flow. Ever again – and a feeling of something, itself reflected and making reflected images. The movement of light – a moment that has passed. Already gone.” (Tappio Wirkkala) Portrait of Tapio Wirkkala 1959 104 TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) Set of two vases Kantarelli, 1950 blown glass, h 9 cm Production: Iittala Signed on the bottom € 500 – 550 82 104 105 TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) Vase, 1950 blown glass, h 9 cm Production: Iittala € 300 – 350 SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN 83 106 107 TIMO SARPANEVA TIMO SARPANEVA Orkide, 1950 glass sculpture, h 28 cm Production: Iittala Bottle, 1950 blown glass, h 18 cm Production: Iittala € 300 – 350 € 300 – 350 108 109 TIMO SARPANEVA TIMO SARPANEVA Round bottle, 1950 green glass, h 16 cm Production: Iittala Round bottle, 1950 purple glass, h 16 cm Production: Iittala € 300 – 350 € 300 – 350 (1926-2006) (1926-2006) 84 (1926-2006) (1926-2006) 110 111 TIMO SARPANEVA TIMO SARPANEVA & TAPIO WIRKKALA Set of six glasses and one pitcher, 1950 glass, h 29 cm (pitcher), h 10 cm (glasses) Production: Iittala Set of two jugs and six glasses, 1950 colored glass, h 29 cm, h 17,5 cm Production: Iittala € 500 – 600 € 300 – 350 112 113 TAPIO WIRKKALA TIMO SARPANEVA Set of eight dessert bowls, 1950 green and blue glass, 13 cm Ø Production: Iittala Set of one serving bowl and six dessert bowls, 1958 glass, 10x22 cm, Ø 22 x h 10 cm, Ø 10 x h 4 cm € 250 – 300 € 300 – 350 (1926-2006) (1915-1985) (1926-2006) & (1915-1985) (1926-2006) SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN 85 114 TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) Set of two ceramics Pollo, 1960 ceramic, w 12 cm Production: Rosenthal Marked € 300 – 350 115 TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) Set of six tall glasses and one pitcher, 1960's glass, h 18 cm, h 24,5 cm Production: Iittala € 300 – 350 86 116 117 TIMO SARPANEVA TIMO SARPANEVA (1926-2006) (1926-2006) Candle holders Festivo, 1966 blown glass, h 18 cm Production: Iittala Signed Set of two candle holders Festivo, 1966 blow glass, h 18 cm, h 32 cm Production: Iittala Signed € 200 – 250 € 300 – 400 118 CHRISTER SJOGREN (1906-2008) Rectangular sculpture, 1950 glass, w 10 x h 21 cm Production: Linshammar Signed € 200 – 250 SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN 87 119 SVEN PALMQVIST (1906-1984) Vase, 1950 glass, h 14,5 cm Production: Orrefors Serial number: 468-68; marked with author's and producer's name under the basis € 400 – 450 88 120 SVEN PALMQVIST (1906-1984) Vase PU3611, 1950 green glass, h 24 cm Production: Orrefors € 200 – 250 SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN 89 121 POUL L. WEGNER Hans J. Wegner was one of the most renowned protagonists of the Modern Danish Design that today is widely recognized for its characteristics of elegance, functionality and predilection of organic forms. In the organic design the forms come from the essence of the materials and their connection to the landscape. Born in the South of Denmark, at the age of twenty Hans J. Wegner moved to Copenhagen to attend the School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied from 1936 to 1938 before embarking on a career as an architect. One of his first project was, in 1940, the design of furniture for the new City Hall in Aarhus together with Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. In 1943 he opened his own drawing studio soon becoming famous for his passion in designing chairs most of them, such as some produced for Carl Hansen & Søn's, are today truly iconic. Creative and extremely productive, Hans J. Wegner received the Lunning Prize in 1951 and The 8th International Design Award in 1997. His furnitures are today part of the collections of the world's major design museums. Portrait of Hans J. Wegner 128 HANS J. His incumbency in this role was to prove the most successful period in the company’s 80year history as he introduced a new modernist aesthetic, imposed a unified style of branding and introduced stringent new standards for the company’s output. From the smallest components making up the lamps to their labelling, packaging, advertising and showroom display, every facet of the business came under Hammerborg’s exacting eye for form and detail. Jo Hammerborg was a prolific designer, personally creating around 100 lamps, and also collaborated with other designers in adapting their designs to meet F&M’s new production requirements. His lighting designs for Fog & Mørup won numerous prizes, amongst them a CICi first prize in 1965 for the Nova and four iF Product Design Awards in 1969 for the Classic, Tunika, Saturn and Diskos. With graceful lines, a strong use of local woods with a combination of impeccable woodworking skills and the classical marks for details is what Zalszupin’s furniture became known for. A significant part of Zalszupin's furniture production is attributed to his architecture. He used new design language and tendencies, while maintaining a functional view of ambience for internal spaces. The need to create a successful harmony between architecture and his furniture was the reason behind establishing his own company L'Atelier, a design collective, comprised of architects, engineers and craftsmen. 19. 13.
