With their enthusiasm and crispness of structure, one might think they were the work of promising young university students, this book being the most recent to result from the trend. One’s admiration, mixed with surprise and academic interest, can only grow however, when it is discovered that the driving force behind this movement is a scholar in his nineties, Giovanni Carnevale. The author’s name alone, by now well-known amongst the most serious of Picenan historiographers for his work concerning Charlemagne, augurs well for the content and methodological layout of the book. It also bodes well for the aim of this publication: to shed light on and achieve justice for the existence, significance and role of Aquisgrana in Val di Chienti. To this end, a source of great artistic and architectural value can be discerned from the examination of the architectural remains around the Picenan Urbs. In particular, this research is focused on the results of excavations which began in the 1980s with the intention of uncovering the ancient Roman city of Pausulae. By a pleasing and providential concomitance, stretches of wall and other important remains were uncovered instead as the excavations were carried out. Gratifyingly, these would lead to the highly significant identification of the celebrated Schola Palatina, which the author has no hesitation in referring to as «the cradle of European culture». The study of the consequences and the historical importance of the friendly relations between Charlemagne and Arun Al Rashid, distinguished and well-regarded caliph of Baghdad, the recorded presence of ‘Syrian’ workers in the Picenan region and the noted use, in the construction of local buildings, of ar7 tistic and architectural elements that clearly make reference to the Byzantine canon and innovative Islamic art, all represent further evidence for Giovanni Carnevale. This has been drawn from a wide network of heterogeneous historical sources and is undoubtedly and unanimously aimed at ascertaining the truth regarding the Carolingian seat of power in Val di Chienti. For us, readers and scholars, all that remains is to read and study these findings and by following the inspiring example set by the author of this book, support and encourage the advance of historical research. Only in this way may it be possible to pass on the patrimony of the past to future generations, a past freer of ideological impasses and previous errors of interpretation. Rome, 30th September 2011. Vatican City Cosimo Semeraro Secretary of the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences 8 Preface This publication has a chronological link to the themes discussed, in Italian and English, in the volume «The Discovery of the Burial Place of Pippin the Short and of his wife Bertha at the Collegiate Church of San Ginesio». The subject matter covered in the volume concludes with death of Pippin in 768. In this book, the authors will discuss the historical figure of Charlemagne in greater detail. Charles, who was King Pippin’s son, was to set extraordinary events in motion in Val di Chienti, making the vallley the new capital of his empire. At that time the region was named Aquis Grani, after the Springs of Granno. It should be clarified that in Carolingian and Saxon sources, Aquis Grani never refers to an urban settlement but only to a wellirrigated region. Even today for the French, Aquis Grani refers to Aix-la-Chapelle, namely the thermal waters close to where the Palatine Chapel was built. Charles’ decision to restore a new capital to Western Europe was funded by the great reserve of gold which had been accrued to him during the wars which he and his predecessors had waged. Western Europe at this time, after the collapse of the Roman Empire in 476 and the Barbaric Invasions that followed, had fallen into a disastrous social, economic and organisational state. With regards to Piceno, the region with which this research is concerned, it was still crowded with ruins that bore testament to ancient classical civilization yet it no longer had the skilled workers capable of continuing the glorious artistic traditions of ancient Rome. Such traditions had long lived on in the Byzantine Orient however, and when Islam conquered the province of Syria (as the Byzantines referred to the countries of the Middle East) Charlemagne established friendly relations with Harun al-Rashid, the Caliph of Baghdad and sovereign of «One Thousand and One Nights». This friendship favoured an influx of workers who imported artistic and architectural knowledge of Byzantine style and innovative Islamic art, in particular the cross vault. The permanent residence of the Carolingian court was established in Aquis Grani. The Palatium was built there with its buildings immersed in the green valley, the crowning achievement of the Domus Regia or Charlemagne’s royal residence. The latest archaeological findings made during the course of this 9 year are certainly surprising: the ruins of the Schola Palatina have been located, around 300 metres behind the ancient Palatine chapel of San Claudio. This is a vital discovery and one which reinforces the argument that the Carolingian seat of power was in Aquis Grani, that is to say, in the lower Chienti valley. This thesis is strengthened by another revelation, one which may disappoint those still reluctant to abandon the theory that Aachen was the ancient Carolingian capital. On 19th May 2010, the non-existence of Charlemagne’s tomb in the atrium of Aachen Cathedral was reported in various national daily newspapers as well as in the European press. Among these was Turin’s La Stampa whose headline declared «Charlemagne doesn’t live here» and Avvenire «Charlemagne’s Tomb? It doesn’t exist». To quote the article as it appeared in Avvenire: «Charlemagne’s original tomb cannot be found in the atrium of Aachen Cathedral as believed until now. The theory was debunked by a team of archaeologists who had searched in vain for three years, hoping for evidence of the burial place of the emperor, who died in 814. Despite the excavations which were carried out, the oldest traces found in the subsoil of the atrium date back to the 13th century, four hundred years after the emperor’s death. His exact burial place has been a matter of debate for hundreds of years and since the 1980s the hypothesis concerning the atrium of the cathedral had gained ground. Andreas Schaub, the archaeologist leading the research, states that in any case «It is certain that Charlemagne was buried at Aquisgrana and it is certain that this occurred in the grounds of the cathedral. Charlemagne died on the morning of 28 January 814 and was buried on the same day. Two centuries later Barbarossa had the bones transferred to an urn, which remained in the cathedral.» This revelation also has paradigmatic value since new findings which have emerged from the study of historical sources in the last twenty years are consistently in favour of Aquisgrana being located in Val di Chienti and therefore against it being located in Aachen. Giovanni Carnevale 10 The Schola Palatina and The Carolingian Renaissance in Val di Chienti The relocation of the royal seat in Lower Val di Chienti The history of the settlement of the Franks in Val di Chienti has been well-documented. Indeed, it is covered in a coherent and organic way in the volume «The Birth of Charlemagne’s Europe in Val di Chienti». The short bilingual volume that followed «The Discovery of the Burial Places of Pippin the Short and of his wife Bertha in the Collegiate Church of San Ginesio» (Italian and English) informed the public of the discovery of the tomb of King Pippin and Queen Bertha, Charlemagne’s parents. The basic outline of the two publications cited above may be summarised as follows: in 715 the Franks of Aquitaine (part of Southern France today) fled an invasion by the Arabic forces that had recently conquered Spain. They then took refuge in Italy where land was put at their disposal by Thomas of Maurienne, the Abbot of Farfa with the consent of Faroaldo, the Lombard Duke of Spoleto. The Frankish refugees were displaced along a stretch of the Salaria road, which first passed through the Reatino region along the diverticulum of the Gallic Salaria, and then crossed Piceno at the foot of the Apennine Ridge. This stretch corresponds substantially to that of a present-day provincial road: former State Highway 78. The refugees were soon joined by the son of the recently-deceased Pippin 13 of Herstal, a man historically referred to as Charles Martel. The prince settled in the region of Pons Hugonis, from which the vernacular terms Ponticone and Pontone derive. It is also a place which is often mistakenly identified by historiographers as Porthion in Gaul. From his residence at the time (what is now Sant’Angelo in Pontano) Charles called the Parisii monks to his court and founded an abbey which adjoined the Church of Saint Denis. Although he was buried in the choir of this church in 741, his tomb has never been discovered and even during the course of current research it is not known if it still exists. Charles was succeeded by his son Pippin the Short who soon came into conflict with Liutprando, King of the Lombards in Pavia. Pippin sought the support of the Papacy in his defence and this alliance was strengthened further when the Lombard sovereign died in 744. Pepin was then obliged to confront Ratchis, the new Lombard king, followed by his successor Astolfo. Two particularly important events occurred under his rule. In agreement with the Papacy, the last Merovingian king, Childeric, was deposed in Gaul in 751. In this way the conditions were set for the Carolingians to succeed the Merovingian dynasty. The former had settled in Piceno by this time, a region which had assumed the name of France due to the rapid rise in the presence of Franks. In 752 Pope Stephan II went to the court of King Astolfo in Pavia in order to negotiate an agreement with him. With a positive outcome proving impossible, the Pope met with Pippin at Saint Denis in Picenan France. After lengthy negotiations, he was anointed King of the Franks in 753. His two sons Carloman and Charles (later Charlemagne) were also anointed, as well as Queen Bertha. According to a memoir of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pious II, Bertha was of Byzantine origin. This assertion may clarify why bilateral relations were 14 established between the Frankish court of Pippin and the former Byzantine province of Syria, which had recently been conquered by the Arabs. Indeed, these relations were destined to improve as time progressed. In 750 the Umayyad Caliphs, who had dominated in Damascus since 661, were ousted by the Abbasids. This new dynasty then abandoned Damascus in order to found a new capital, Baghdad. As a consequence, the lands of the former Caliph underwent an acute economic crisis. This was also felt strongly by the local workers who had begun important building work under the Umayyads which is now known as nascent Islamic architecture. While these events were taking place in the Orient, the Pope’s consecration of Pippin in Saint Denis lead to an inevitable military confrontation with Astolfo. Once defeated, Astolfo had to surrender half of the treasure of the Kings of Pavia to the new monarch and accept that the Lombard kingdom would become a tributary of the Frankish kingdom. Pippin had already inherited a great store of gold amassed by his father, Charles Martel. This gold was the fruit of campaigns which had been conducted in Gaul before Charles’ death. The concentration of such wealth in the hands of the new Frankish king served the recruitment of skilled construction workers from the Orient. They were primarily recruited in order to build the King a more appropriate royal residence in lower Val di Chienti. It is certain that between 765 and 768, the year he died, Charles had a Palatium Publicum built. This took the place of his previous residence in the Pon Hugonis region, along the Gallic Salaria. It is in fact documented that the king wintered in Aquis villa in 765, evidently to follow the construction work being undertaken by the Syrian workers close at hand. By 768 the Palatium Publicum had certainly already been built since 15 Charlemagne, who succeeded him on the throne, issued a document from there which has survived until the present day. Although the archaeological remains of the royal Palatium have still not been located, they can be pinpointed on the basis of two sources; the first derives from the Catholic Encyclopedia which, in the entry of Benedict of Aniane, states that the Palatium was five miles away from Monasterium ad Indam. This refers to the place where Santa Croce all’Ete now stands and where Benedict himself lived. As for the second, Abelardo, in a first letter to a friend, notes that the Palatium was 8 miles away from Urbs.1 This text and its relative criticisms are referred to in the footnotes. If a five-mile arc is drawn on a map of Val di Chienti using a compass, taking Benedict’s former residence, present-day Santa Croce all’Ete, as its centre, and the same operation is then repeated taking the archaeological zone of the 1 Abelardo decribed his birthplace in this way in ‘Epistola I’, quae est istoria calamitatum Abaelardi, ad amicum scripta «Ego igitur, oppido quodam oriundus quod [in ingress minoris Britanniae constructum] ad urbe [Namnetica] versus orientem octo credo miliariis remotum, proprio vocabolo Palatium appellatur, sicut natura terre mee vel generis animo levis, ita et ingenio extiti et ad litteratoriam disciplinam facilis.» [epistola I] In translation: «I was born in a settlement to the East of Urbs, at a distance, I believe, of eight miles. The correct name for this settlement is Palatium. My heart swells with pride for the noble character of my home and my land. I have also grown to be proud in character and proud of the intellectual ease with which I face problems of literature.» That which is considered an obvious interpolation in the Latin text has been written in parentheses, consequently, no translation can be given. The interpolation originates from the century in which the manuscript was printed, which is to say, after the 15th century. In modern times the meaning of both Palatium and its usage in Picenan France had completely fallen out of use. Since the toponym Pallet existed on an island named off the coast of Brittany, it was thought that Palatium could be identified with Pallet, not realizing that such an interpretation contradicted the rest of the text. Abelardo’s assertion that the Palatium was eight miles away from Urbs, cannot be applied either to the island or the city of Nantes. Another grossly mistaken attempt to locate the Palatium, can be found in note 20 on pg. 39 of «The Discovery of the Burial Place of Pippin the Short and his wife Bertrada in the Collegiate Church of San Ginesio» 2010. In this source the Palatium is equated to Diocletian’s palace, the Bath of Diocletian. 16 Urbs (today in the vicinity of Urbisaglia) as a central point and drawing an eight-mile arc, it can be seen that the two arcs become almost tangential. Charlemagne’s palace, the remains of which were even witnessed by Andrea Bacci2 in 1500, must have risen in the area between the two arcs where San Claudio now stands as well as the remains of what was, as will now be explained, the Schola Palatina. The Schola Palatina in Val di Chienti Between 765 and 768 workers flocked to Piceno from formerly Byzantine Syria. They not only completed the construction of the Palatium publicum but also helped to build the Schola Palatina, as findings in the area behind San Claudio have revealed. In all probability, the building complex was not constructed at the same time as the Pippin’s Palatium Publicum, during the early years of his reign, by his son. The absidal section of the Schola Palatina was uncovered in 1982. It seems certain that it was constructed by workers from the Orient for the reasons below. Several digs were carried out during that year in the area behind San Claudio, in search of the ancient Roman Bacci Andrea, came from the ancient city of Cluana, present-day Sant’Elpidio a Mare. Cited in Natale Medaglia, historical memoir of the city of Cluana. Macerata 1962. On the fields of Chienti a battle was fought whose events were collected and recounted by those who were part of the war against the Saracens, signs of which remain impressed upon those places and reach us today since, once victory was won, the great emperor had a monastery constructed on those same fields full of the glory of God. This temple is an Abbey today, situated 3 miles from Sant’Elpidio. Furthermore part of a country palace can still be seen. It is ancient and still today known as the King Carlo’s Palace. Since it has been historically proven by documents which can currently be found in the Secret Archive of Sant’Elpidio a Mare that Santa Croce was rebuilt by Charles III (Charles the Fat) and consecrated in 887, the tradition referred to by Bacci seems to confuse Charlemagne with the Emperor Charles III. 2 17 city of Pausulae. No evidence of the city was found and the various findings uncovered in the course of the excavation were not classified. The only visible remains, which were left cropping out of the ground after being uncovered during the course of the excavation, were the absidal section and other stretches of wall belonging to a Paleo-Christian church. No studies have so far been carried out on these ruins, yet they are of enormous historical importance. They represent what remains of that cradle of European culture, the celebrated Schola Palatina. Charlemagne put several important figures in charge of the school, namely the Anglo-Saxon scholar Alcuin, the Lombard Paul the Deacon and the Pisan Petrus Grammaticus. It has only recently been possible to confirm that the building was built by workers from Syria, a region which had been Islamicised by this time. This is because it is essentially an exact replica of a Syrian Paleo-Christian complex built in Lubbein, situated in the Southern confines of present-day Syria, on the road that leads from Damascus to Amman in Jordan. The credit for its discovery belongs to a distinguished scholar from Strasburg, Jean-Marie Dentzer.3 The presence of a Paleo-Christian church in Lubbein and of its twin in Val di Chienti should overcome any doubts concerning the origins of San Claudio, which are often falsely attributed to the 10th century. In order to fully understand the buildings constructed by these workers, who were recruited from overseas by Pippin and Charlemagne, an outline of the historical context in the Orient at the time is required. The advent of the Abbassid dynasty had brought about an unprecedented state of affairs. The creation of a new capital in Baghdad 3 AA.VV. Syrien Verlag Philipp Von Zabern, Magonza S.D. article by J.M. Dentzer, pg. 82-88 (figure 7) «Siedlungen und ihre kirchen in Südsyrien». 18 threw the unconverted Christian-Byzantine population into a deep economic and consequently, cultural crisis. The most alarming phenomenon was the mass exodus of the ruling political and religious elite to lands that remained under the control of Byzantium or the Pope in Italy. Einhard notes that Charlemagne generously welcomed the numerous (multitudo) foreign refugees (peregrini), with serious injury to his treasury, both of the regnum as well as the Palatium.4 Evidence of such affluence may still be found in the ancient monastic hermitages scattered among the gorges of the Apennines. It is also indicated by the actions of Claudio, an iconoclastic ecclesiastic from the court of Ludovic the Pious. Once he had been nominated the Bishop of Torino (present-day Pieve Torina) he would burn the icons of monks who took refuge in these hermitages. The exodus proved most difficult for the working classes, for economic reasons naturally. Nevertheless, in 750, the dynasty of Abbasid Caliphs began the construction of Baghdad. It was a city with circular walls, wide green spaces irrigated by canals derivated from the Tigris and radial streets that converged towards the centre, like ancient Babylon. Meanwhile, in Piceno, the new Carolingian dynasty began building the Palatium in Aquis Grani which did not have the look of a walled city but was in fact a collection of isolated buildings sparsely laid out in the green of the well-irrigated lower Val di Chienti. Over time, a relationship was established between the two nascent dynasties that was not only diplomatic in character, but also one of cordial friendship between Harun al-Rashid, Eginardo, Vita Karoli Magni, C. XXI: Amabat peregrinos set in eis suscipiendis magnam habebat curam, adeo ut eorum multitudo non solum palatio, verum etiam regno non inmerito videretur onerosa. Ipse tamen prae magnitudine animi huiuscemodi pondere minime gravabatur, cum etiam ingentia incommoda laude liberalitatis ec bonae famae mercede conpensaret. 4 19 the sovereign of One Thousand and One Nights, and Charlemagne, the sovereign of Aquisgrana. Gifts were also exchanged between the two. We know that Harun had a hydraulic organ sent to Aquisgrana, as well as a marvellous mechanical clock and an Indian elephant called Abdul Abbas. The pachyderm was transported to Italy by the Jewish merchant Isaac, who had landed at Porto Venere, having crossed the Apennines (the Alps) at the Cisa pass. He then travelled down the Via Aemilia and successive consular Roman roads before reaching Aquisgrana, where he lived for many years. It was this friendship that favoured the influx of workers, in full economic crisis, from Southern Syria to Picenan France. The relocation of the royal residence from its original seat in the lower Chienti valley was accompanied by the construction of a holy building close to the Palatium, which functioned as a church court. Evidence of such a building, as has already been suggested, was discovered during the campaign of excavations that the Regional Board for the Archaeological Assets of the Marche sponsored in 1982 as they searched in vain for the Roman city of Pausalae. The excavation of this building was never completed and is limited to what has been uncovered so far. This was because it could be plainly seen that a Paleo-Christian church was being revealed when the objective of the operation was, of course, something else. Since the remains of Pausulae were not located, the excavation ceased. Fortunately, the absidal part of the Paleo-Christian church was left uncovered, allowing Professor Carnivale to make it his initial source of investigation. By comparing sections of the ruins with those provided by Jean-Marie Dentzer’s research, he concluded that the building in Val di Chienti was evidently a Paleo-Christian hall church with a resemblance to that in Lubbein. However, at the time, 20 his claims were based on the mere similarity of the two buildings. Today, the professor, in collaboration with the authors of this book, is able to make a bolder archaeological claim. The Syrian building in Lubbein is almost identical to that in Piceno, both in layout and in its dimensions (expressed in cubits). It is striking that the building in Lubbein and that in San Claudio are both adjoined, along the Western wall, by two large rooms. These were evidently for the use of scriptum and schola. The building in Val di Chienti, in respect to that of Syria, has an abside that opens onto another room which is wider than that in Lubbein. This room was the cantoria: testimony to Charlemagne’s well-documented love of music. The demand for a Carolingian school was dictated by the fact that Pepin and Charlemagne had been educated by parisii monks from Saint Denis (present-day San Ginesio). Despite being substantially illiterate, they were able to understand Greek better than they were able to speak it. The movement of the court from the mountains to the sea meant that the Palatium became the politico-cultural centre of the new dynasty. As it was said that the Frankish monasteries and leaders were solely dedicated to martial activities, everything which was cultural would be assigned to the church and to its representatives. Pippin had already had a hand in the organization of the church with the creation of a single Ecclesiaticum Ministerium o Cappella.5 This was lead by an arch-chaplain who also controlled the court chancery. Charlemagne, who controlled Western Europe by now and had good relations with the Orient, felt the need to establish 5 Eginard, Vie de Charlemagne, edited and produced by Louise Halphen. 21 an elite of important ecclesiastics. This elite group would be capable of representing the kingdom in diplomatic engagements or could also be put in charge of the kingdom’s dioceses. It was this demand that lead to the construction of a court Palatine or Schola. As already mentioned, cultural guidance during the Carolingian Renaissance was entrusted to Alcuin, Paul the Deacon and Peter of Pisa. Naturally these three ‘masters’ were joined by a host of amanuensi, manuscript illustrators and Gregorian music scholars. The majority of these must have been intellectuals fleeing from their native Orient, unwilling to live under the dominion of Islamic conquerors: the peregrini of whom Einhard spoke. The wide room in front of the presbytery, reserved for the clergy, was occupied during the liturgical functions of the Pueri Cantores to bring prestige to the sacred duties. It should be remembered that the Schola Palatina codified Gregorian chant in the 8th century. The musical neumes were systematically adopted and spread, one after the other, throughout the whole of Europe. Two fragments of parchment upon which the neumes appear are kept in the state archive of Macerata, possibly transcibed or produced by the Schola Palatina itself.6 With regards to the two rooms which outwardly adjoined the holy building, they also constituted integral parts of the Schola. One must have been where the sons of the elite flocked, to be educated in the study of the Arts. However, they may not have been the most dedicated of students, as one anecdote concerning Charlemagne tells us. The other room was the Scriptorium from which so many transcriptions of classical manuscripts and of the Bible were issued. They were written in the minuscola carolina and illustrated by the hands of Oriental Syrians, which Macerata State Archive, Tabulario Diplomatico, fragments 567, 568. 6 22 seems obvious when compared with Syrian illustrations of the time. The internal walls of the church adjoining the Schola itself must have held the volumes used by the school on apposite shelving. As such, it must have acted as the library of the Schola Palatina. Otherwise there is no explanation for the fact that this wing of the church was fifty centimetres deeper than the space in front of the opposing walls. In Lubbein, this difference was only twenty centimetres, or rather half the depth. The Schola Palatina clearly possessed a larger number of manuscripts that were in a considerably more elevated position. The position of the library inside the Western walls explains why the abside is centred between the Eastern wall and the shelving but off-centre with regards to the two walls. It should be remembered that the building, even if reduced to little more than a ruin, bears testimony to how, by the will of Charlemagne, an essential catalogue of ancient literature was saved. This fact, when coupled with the idea that the great Carolingian Emperor and the protagonists of his court lived and studied there, provide us with a fascinating, unparalleled history. San Claudio, or rather, the new Palatine Chapel Further proof that Oriental workers built what is now San Claudio (the novam cappellam inter vineta of which Alcuino writes in one of his letters from England) is provided by its structure. This architectural discovery has already been discussed in Chapter VIII of «The Discovery of Aquisgrana in Val di Chienti» (pg. 61-66) and in the volume that followed «The Birth of Charlemagne’s Europe in Val di Chienti» (pg. 36-43). This building is a vital point of reference not only for the historical events that occurred in the Early Middle 23 Ages but also for the subsequent evolution of European architecture. The cross vault made its first appearance in Europe as part of the building at the end of the 8th century; a structure which was unknown in the buildings of ancient Rome but common in the Orient. The Frigidarium of the Umayyad palace in Khirbat al-Mafjar contained one such example, although the building was destroyed in an earthquake in 746 before it had been entirely completed. It is worth noting that the structure of the buildings at Aquisgrana, which were constructed to accommodate the functions of the new Palatine chapel, were modelled upon the architecture of this frigidarium. The remains of the complex in Khirbat al-Mafjar remained buried under the dunes of the desert until they were uncovered by a British expedition after the Second World War. The leader of the expedition, Hamilton,7 analysed the remains and was able to reconstruct the cross vaults which had been part of the Frigidarium with the utmost accuracy. According to Hamilton’s hypothesis, the palace was designed by the architect Abdallah ibn Sulaim and had a square layout, subdivided into nine large bays. This structure, which had never been used within peripheral defensive walls until then, was reproduced in the supporting architecture of present-day San Claudio. The original building, which had been destroyed by Barbarossa, was roughly reconstructed in the new church’s large internal arcs towards the end of the 12th century. Reconstruction was carried out by the bishops of Fermo, precisely copying the dimensions of the cross vault which had collapsed in on itself. For this reason, the build- 7 R.W.Hamilton and Grabar. Khirbat Al-Mafjar: an Arabian Mansin in the Jordan Valley, Oxford 1959, p. 44. 24 ing can still be studied in its original form today; three apses form part of the far wall, a single apse forms part of the two lateral walls and the frontal wall is flanked by two cylindrical towers with spiral staircases which can be accessed externally. A matroneum, which could also be accessed from outside the church, ran along the length of the peripheral bays on the ground floor. By taking the stairs in one of the towers one could go even higher, reaching a terrace on the roof of the chapel. The terrace surrounded a dome which rose from the central bay. It should be briefly mentioned that the sails on the roofing of the cross vault constitute the earliest part of the building. Indeed, they revolutionised building techniques throughout Europe in the Roman Era. As has already been stated, in present-day San Claudio the cross vaults and the great arcs on which they rested are not the originals. However, the original remains of the medieval vaults form part of the peripheral walls. The presence of cross vaults in the structure of the building have often prevented its construction from being attributed to the Carolingian era. Even so, there are historical sources which support this assertion clearly: Charlemagne recruited workers from overseas to build his novam Cappellam inter vineta. This is affirmed by Notker, although the damnatio memoriae, which details the exploits of the Carolingians in Val di Chienti in the Early Middle Ages, fails to give an exact date. Clearly, the arguments which have been discussed regarding the uncovered remains near to present-day San Claudio, identified as Charlemagne’s Schola Palatina, should dispel any doubts concerning the ascendancy of the Carolingians. If a church was built by Byzantine workers in Lubbein in Southern Syria, whose twin can be found in the remains of the Schola Palatina, there should no longer be any uncer25 tainty that the two buildings in Val di Chienti were built at the wishes of Charlemagne and built by workers recruited from the Orient. The use of sails in the architecture of San Claudio undoubtedly constitutes the first time a cross vault was constructed in Western Europe. It was immediately imitated in loco, in the church of San Vittore during the final stages of its construction. It was also reproduced across the Alps in the oratory of Germigny des Prés, at the wishes of Teuodolf, the Bishop of Orléans. According to historical records, Donato, the Bishop of Zara, also built a church adjoining his palace which imitated the Palatine Chapel in Aquisgrana.8 Taking the features of the church in Zara into account, this assertion would seem to be accurate since the building has three absides and a matroneum, as in San Claudio. Nevertheless the church, which is located across the Adriatic sea, doesn’t contain any cross vaults; it has a round structure and its matroneum runs internally around a tunnel vault. It seems clear then, that the Byzantium workers of Zara had no knowledge of cross vault construction at this time. They built a church which, though essentially identical to the chapel in Aquisgrana, combined Roman elements with three Carolingian absides. 8 Eginard records that Donato and the Doges of Venice, travelled (by sea naturally) to meet Charlemagne at Villa Theodonis, present-day Altidona (province of Ascoli Piceno). However, this is identified illogically by German historiography as Diedenhofen. An Oriental man named Abdullah was present at the Charlemagne’s court and appears to have travelled back and forth between Aquisgrana and the Orient. It is indeed possible that he was the architect who built the Cappellam inter vineta for Charlemagne, in around 790. Having seen that the Caliphal palace of Baghdad was set at the centre of a immaculate urban ring and that the remaining buildings were set apart in a radial position between that centre and the outer walls, he planned a similar layout for Aquisgrana. This meant that the Palatine’s dependent buildings were positioned in a radial manner around the palace. The plans for Aquisgrana, with a collection of palaces radiating outwards from the seat of power, also had a symbolic value of course. This was underlined by the fact that the buildings were enclosed in a circle of ministeria, each assigned to a Grande di Francia o Judex. It is still possible to locate the ministeria today because the toponym appears in documents written long after the year 1000. By this time however, the term was no longer associated with subordination to the Emperor and had simply become a territorial denomination. The buildings constructed in Val di Chienti by Oriental workers, namely the Schola Palatina, almost an exact copy of a holy building in Lubbein, and the Palatine chapel, the remains of which are represented by presentday San Claudio, have both been discussed thus far. With regards to San Claudio, the presence of an intelligent architect can be clearly seen, even from its planning stages. In this case, he didn’t precisely copy another building, as those who built the Schola had done. Although the cubic structure of the Umayyad frigidarium was sub27 stantially reproduced, a matroneum was built inside the church and the façade was strengthened by angular towers on the peripheral walls. When work began on the Palatine Chapel, the complex of Khirbet al-Mafjar had already collapsed. Since its remains had already been covered over by desert sands, it is obvious that the new workers directed by Abdullah could not have copied a building which no longer existed in the Orient at the time. Nevertheless, we may speculate that those who worked with him had participated in the construction of the frigidarium in their youth. This could explain their determination to consolidate, here in Val di Chienti, the quadrilateral walls supporting the towers and absides of San Claudio which continue to survive local earthquakes after twelve hundred years in existence. In constructing the chapel, present-day San Claudio, Abdullah proved himself to be an architect who planned and built with creative style. It may also have been Abdullah who built the church with three apses where Santa Croce all’Ete now stands. The original structure of this Carolingian building, which was made of brick and destroyed by the Saracens in 881, has recently been discovered. Abdullah is also credited with the construction of Charlemagne’s hunting lodge, in the higher Chienti valley. The structure of this building remains largely intact and is still in use today as the Church of San Giusto. It is located in the vicinity of San Maroto, in the municipality of Pieve Bovigliana and was undoubtedly built by Oriental workers. The lodge was an unicum, constructed in a region which was known as Arduenna and used as a hunting ground. The land was subject to the Comes Stabuli and was used for breeding grazing animals as well as the hunting of wild animals which sheltered in the nearby Appenine woods. The Capitulare de Villis makes reference to Varaniones, a word of Oriental origin. This term is used in Palestine even today 28 and referred precisely to young Arabic breeding horses (farà). This information indicates that the stallions which Charlemagne acquired from the Orient and imported to the West formed the basis of the widely-feared Carolingian cavalry with which he subjugated Europe. To return to the hunting lodge, it was built around a cylindrical structure covered by a dome-shaped roof. This hemisphere has the same diameter as its base and a radius which is equal to the height of the cylinder. The dome was mainly made from sponge stone in order to reduce its weight. Furthermore, it was supported by four absides spread out around the perimeter of the cylindrical structure to reduce the pull of gravity. In planning the building, Abdullah used his calipers expertly. Indeed, the whole building reveals that his knowledge of the laws of static was flawless. This building has also survived, for more than a millennium, the frequent and intense earthquakes which affect the region. The hunting lodge and the Palatine Chapel, presentday San Claudio, are evidence of Abdullah’s genius. He planned original architecture and entrusted the work to experts in manual labour. Considering that wood was scarce in the Orient, the use of intricate wooden scaffolding was not possible. For example, the wide vault was constructed by a single builder, working from a platform which rested upon the summit of the cylinder. He laid a spiral of quoins which was finally closed off at the vault’s central point. The structure remains undamaged until the modern day. The outstanding simplicity of the methods used in the construction of the hunting lodge can also be seen in present-day San Claudio, although the original interior was reconstructed «as it was, where it was» after defeat at Legnano in 1176 lead to its destruction at the hands of Barbarossa. The simple, modular structure of the ancient Palatine Chapel can still be clearly seen today. The eight bays on the ground floor, covered by cross vaults, support 29 eight identical matroneum bays. The style of future Romanesque churches was already in use, in which the nave was lengthened or the trancepts were inclined, increasing the modular structure of the bays. If Charlemagne was the patron of the Carolingian renaissance, Abdullah was the genius who carried out its grand designs. The two surviving Carolingian buildings in the lower Val di Chienti, the Schola Palatina and the Cappella Palatina, are set three hundred metres apart, yet relative sources indicate that they were both integral parts of Charlemagne’s Palatium. When Benedetto di Aniane summoned the abbots of the empire in 817 to have the European abbeys adopt his Regola, based on the Regula Benedicti of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the official records of the synod state that the meeting took place «at Aquisgrana, in the wing of the palace which Charlemagne named Laterano.» The building is usually referred to in documents as the Palatine Chapel and the school which Charles had built in the palace grounds. Although the entire complex of the palace has still not been uncovered, it is stated in historical documents that the two buildings were located in Aquis(Grani) and made up part of the same Palatium. The fact that they were assigned the Palatine name dispels any doubts to the contrary. Furthermore, the fact that the Oriental workers had previously built residences for their patrons in desert regions far from the capital Damascus or from other urban centres lends weight to the argument that Aquisgrana wasn’t an urban settlement. It follows then that the Palatium itself was isolated, just like those residences built in the Middle East. There can be no doubt that the term Palatium indicates a collection of interdependent buildings which were set apart from each other at a distance and that Aquis Grani, in sources from the Early Middle Ages, never refers to a city in the ancient or modern sense of the word 30 but only the well-irrigated region of the lower Chienti valley. The geographical context only changed in the 12th century when the first communal settlements began to appear. Abelardo stated that he was born in an Oppidum named Palatium which was eight miles from the Urbs. This settlement was the only city present in Val di Chienti in the age of Charlemagne. The Ministeria of Val di Chienti The arguments discussed thus far lend some historical substance to the terms Aquisgrana and Palatium. While the first simply refers to the region where the imperial residences were built, the second bears as much upon these buildings as those who administered the domus regia and the kingdom it controlled. This is not only confirmed in the Capitulare de villis but also in Incmar’s Ordanatio Imperii. There was a city, or Urbs, whose population mostly consisted of ‘Romans’ and Orientals rather than Franks, eight miles away from the Palatium. Charles entrusted the ministeria, with their important role of Judex, to his fideles. The term is undoubtedly of Carolingian origin, indeed, it is mentioned eleven times in the Capitulare de villis (chps. 8, 9, 10, 16, 17, 26, 27, 45, 50, 53, 56). This document clearly states that each ministeria was under the authority of a Judex who had a number of ministeriales at his disposal, with each being assigned specific responsibilities. The most important of these were the maiores who administered the forests, foals and cellars. They were followed by the decani, tax collectors and other collaborating officials (see chps. 8, 9, 10). In chapter 16, it is also stated that Seneschals could be found among the ministeriales of a ministerium. Chapter 17 notes that a certain number of villae, small settlements inhabited by peasants, grew up around the ministerium. In 31 chapter 26 it is recorded that the «maiores of the ministeria were never assigned a territory which could not be walked across and inspected within one day.» In chapter 27 it is recommended that the emissaries and the ambassadors that visit the Palatium be accommodated in a ministerium rather than in a curtis of the king. In chapter 45 the following is stated: «may every judge have skilful craftsmen, such as blacksmiths, silver and goldsmiths, cobblers, lathe turners, carpenters, shield-makers, soap-makers, fishermen, fowler, brewers of beer, cider or those skilled in the brewing of any other pleasant drink, bakers who may provide bran bread, makers of nets which could be used for hunting or fishing or to catch birds and finally other ministeriales too which would take too long to list.» Incmar also mentions the ministeriales in his Ordanatio Imperii. A final citation taken from chapter 56 states «may each judge hold frequent hearings, administer justice and ensures that our serfs live honestly.» The Capitulare de villis plainly states that the ministeria administered the Palatium where the King and Queen lived. These sources reveal that Aquisgrana’s administration was based on a centralized structure. The King and Queen lived in the Domus regia of the Palatium. There was a Judex beneath them who directed the Ministerium, who in turn oversaw a host of ministeriales which had a variety of different responsibilities within the administration. The curtes were also part of the structure, however they were regie and as such were under the direct control of the king. In addition, there was the Ecclesiasticum ministerium, which was distinct from the various ministeria. It was usually referred to as the Capella and encompassed all the buildings and land belonging to the church. It was supervised by an archdeacon who corresponded directly with the king and had the cappellani (the rectors of the individual churches) at this service. In Incmar’s Ordanatio Imperii it 32 is noted that the person who held this position was often referred to as apocrisario, the name by which the Pope’s representatives were known in Byzantium. The hierarchical organisation of power and its accompanying subdivision of territory remained unchanged until Lothair II and Louis II, the sons of Lothair I, held power. The former took his name from his father, while the latter was named after his grandfather, Louis the Pious. This administrative structure survived even after they had died, to a time when the possession of Aquisgrana was contested by their uncles, Charles the Bald and Louis the German. Certainly, the decline of the ministeria had certainly already begun in the time of Ludovic the Pious and became apparent from 881 as the Arabs briefly seized control of the region, destroying the Carolingian buildings which adjoined the Palatium. The Annales Fuldenses of that year relate the following; the Normans (referring in fact to Arabic forces confused with the Normans because they reached Aquisgrana from the sea) «vastaverunt… Indam (present-day Santa Croce all’Ete) …et Aquense palatium». Only the king’s capella was saved, although it was converted into a stable «ubi in capella regis equis suis stabulum fecerunt.» Indeed, the only building which must have been saved is the one which still stands on the plains of the Chienti: the Capella regis, present-day San Claudio. A coalition formed by the armies of Pope John VIII, Charles III and Doge Orso of Venice ousted the Arabs the following year. Orso, who held power from 864 until 881, had an interest in keeping the invaders away from the Adriatic coast as he wanted to protect Venetian commerce and was bound by the Pactum Lotharii of 840. The pact had been made against a background of worrying events; Louis the Pious had died and Sicily, in addition to the cities of Taranto and Bari, had been occupied by Ara33 bic forces. This meant they had established an Emirate from which they could attempt the conquest of the entire peninsula. Indeed, by 875 they also had bases in Comacchio and Grado, threatening Venice itself. The three leaders met in the Church of San Leo in the Winter of 881 to plan the reconquest of Aquisgrana. Their names can now be found ciselled together on the ciborium of the Pieve.9 It is probable that the Pope no longer resided in Rome at this time. According to documents from the period, the city was in fact under threat from attacks by Arabic ships on the Lazio coast. He had instead established a seat in the Palatium, converting the former Palatine Chapel into a Lateranese basilica. Naturally, the ecclesiasti- AD HONORE D(OMI)NI NOSTRI IH(ES)U XR(IST)I ET S(AN)C(T)E D(E) I IENETRICIS SE(M)P(ER) / VIRGINIS MARIE EGO QUIDEM URSUS PECCATOR / DUX FIERI IUSSI ROGO VOS OM(NE)S QUI HUNC LEGITIS ORATE P(RO) ME / TEMPORIBUS DOMINO IOH(ANNIS) P(A)P(E) ET KAROLI TERTIO IMP(ERATORES) IND(ICTIONE) XV /. «to the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Mother of God and Eternal Virgin Maria, I, Orso, a sinner, commanded that which was done. I beg all those who read this to pray for me. In the time of Pope John VIII and the Emperor Charles III, Indiction XV» Orso I Partecipazio became the Doge of Venice in 864 after the thirteenth Doge, Pietro Tradonico, died. Eleven years later, in 875, he was obliged to confront the Arabic forces which were advancing up the Adriatic coast. They had occupied Comacchio and attacked Grado yet he defeated them successfully. The devastation of Aquisgrana occured as follows; on 10th October 881, the Arabs began by destroying the important Carolingian abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno before advancing overland. When they reached Aquisgrana, where further troops had arrived by sea, they devastasted the region. Resistance was chiefly organised by Doge Orso at San Leo, who had already established a fort-cum-refuge for the local population when the Arabs had occupied Comacchio. He died before the end of that year and was buried in the church of San Zaccaria in Venice. His son, John Partecipazio II, succeeded him and ruled until 887 when he retired from public life. The inscription on the ciborium, a commemorative funeral inscription dedicated to the deceased Doge was not commissioned by Orso himself. In fact, it was probably his son who had the inscription (FIERI IUSSI) written, together with the names of the Pope and Emperor, in remembrance of his father. 9 34 cum ministerium passed from imperial to papal control, including the confiscation of some secular ministerium which were not of feudal extraction. In fact, under Louis the Pious, the elite of Francia were awarded hereditary possession of the ministeria, which consequently became personal fiefs. It is documented that the Ministerium Sancti Laurentii, which corresponds to the modern-day village of Montecosaro, had become a Pieve (a rural church with a bapistry at the centre of a given territory) by 964. Clearly then, it had passed from being a secular to an ecclesiastic fiefdom. Indeed, even the territory of Montespino became a Pieve by 976. It seems clear that the Pope, who was by now firmly established in Francia, intended to convert all the ministeria which were still of noble descent into fiefdoms of the church. The name ministerium, whether referring to an ecclesiastic or secular fiefdom, endured in its respective territories although it no longer had any political implications. The term remained in use in the 11th century, which saw the rise of medieval communes and conflict between the Guelfs and the Ghibellines. The Swabian kings, from Barbarossa to Frederick II, attempted to reappropriate the ministeria by legal means. They did so by recognizing the temporary administration of the church but declaring it a privilegia, that is to say that the empire had inalienable rights to the land which was only in the possession of the church due to imperial privilege. There was another imperial residence and a circle of ministeria, similar to that in Val di Chienti, in the Valley of Tronto, where the former Consular Salaria ended. It is documented that, from 771 onwards, Charlemagne had a winter residence at Villa Theodonis. He would spend time there in the winter months relaxing with his relatives or receiving ambassadors arriving by sea. The region is known as Altidona today. 35 Like Val di Chienti it was an Urbs, largely populated by Latin citizens and merchants of various origin. As such, a civitas serving the same purpose grew up inland from the Villa Theodonis. It was known at the time as Ornat and today forms part of the ancient heart of Aquiviva Picena. The name lives on in the street name Via di Ornat, after the section of road that leads to the settlement, although today it has been Italianized as ‘Via dell’Ornato’. Furthermore, at both the Palatium and Ornat, the picture was completed by military encampments. In Val di Chienti there was the Campus Maius, or Campomaggio, where the army gathered in the month of May before embarking on its annual expedition in Northern Europe. There is a large plain in the lower Chienti valley which adjoined the Palatium and still bears this name. There were also two Campus Longus whose names have survived today as Campolungo. One was situated close to the Campus Maius, while the other completed the circle of Ministeria at the base of the Tronto Valley or at the end of the Consular Salaria. The adjective Longus indicates that the Frankish military encampments were active throughout the year. The locations of the Campus Longus, one to the North and the other to the South of Picenan France, were chosen for strategic reasons. There were only two means of entry for potential invaders of Francia; the Cancelli nearby present-day Fabriano and the pass located between the Sabina area and Picenan France, along which the Salaria ran. The Adriatic was still largely under the control of Byzantium and remained impenetrable to Arabic ships, while the Sibilini mountain chain constituted an impassable barrier. One camp was situated at the base of the Salaria and the other at the extremity of the Gallic Salaria, so that the Frankish armies could move along those roads quickly. 36 Rome in Val di Chienti The movement and settlement of Barbaric populations during the Early Middle Ages brought about the decline and fall of the ancient Roman cities. Pavia had survived in Northern Italy, but as the capital of the Barbaric Lombard kingdom. Ravenna maintained its relations with Byzantium by sea and Rome by land, yet, like the home of the papacy, it was in unrelenting decline. There is a lack of detailed information regarding the Piceno region. It is only known that Pausulae was an important diocesis whose location cannot be determined even today, and that Urbis Salvia (in present-day Pian di Pieca) was destroyed by Alarico’s troops as he marched on Rome in 410. The word Urbs is often recorded in the age of the Franks without any other place name to qualify it. To distinguish it from Rome, the toponym Urbs might be followed by an adjective such as picena, remensis (that is, founded by Remus as opposed to founded by Romulus) or Urbs aurea in comitatu Camerino. Urbs is a term of Etruscan origin and was used by Tito Livio in his history of Rome. In the early pages of his work «Ab Urbe Condita» the Latin historian recounts the well-known legend of Romulus and Remus, the two twins reared by a wolf. It was said that Romulus founded Rome, while Remus was killed as he was marking out the Urbs’ squared furrow on the Palatine hill. However, the Middle Ages provide an expanded version of the legend, according to which, Remo founded his own Urbs or Rome in the Piceno region, located exactly where Urbisaglia now stands. Until a few decades ago elements of the legend still lived on in local aural tradition, which distinguished Urbs Romulea from Urbs Remensis. In the first half of the last century, grandparents from Val di Chienti told their grandchildren, today grandparents 37 themselves, that Remus had founded Rome in Urbisaglia. They claimed that the Madonna had then appeared before Romulus and warned him that Picenan Rome would not become the centre of a great empire, but rather a different Rome, the one he would found on the banks of the Tiber, as indeed he did.10 This may explain why a lost-wax casting of the Capitoline Wolf, which can now be found in a room of the Capitol in Rome, was made during the Carolingian age. Further proof of its existence is provided by a diptych from Rambona which was commissioned by the Empress Ageltrude towards the end of the 9th century. In addition to the depiction of the wolf, the Cross of Lorriane is depicted and should be taken into consideration. The cross, which has two overlapping axes, still exists and is preserved today in the Church of Numana. It has a missing upper arm which is reproduced in the diptych. It is evident therefore that the diptych makes reference to elements from the area of important political and religious symbolism. The wolf remained in Val di Chienti for centuries nearby Laterano (present-day San Claudio) and was placed next to the equestrian statue of Theodoric, which was brought from Ravenna in the time of Charlemagne. Today it is preserved in the Capitoli Museum and called the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius. Urbs is a word of Etruscan origin. Since Rome was originally formed part of the civilization it is not so surprising to find such words outside of Etruria. The city was founded by Remus, using Etruscan religious rites and had 10 Variations of the legend appeared in French manuscripts printed in the 16th century but have since been lost. They hinted at the existence of two Romes; one on the Tiber and the other on the banks of a river in the vicinity of the Arduenne region (possibly Arduenna), which bore the name of a second Rome. More detail can be found in Les Faictz Merveilleux de Virgille in Domenico Comparetti, Virgilio nel Medio Evo, II, Florence, Bernando Seeber, 1896 [First edition 1891], pg. 163 and pg. 282. 38 leaders of Etruscan ethnicity amongst its first kings. The Etruscans crossed the Apennines in this period of great expansion and reached the Adriatic where they founded, among others, a port named Spina on the Adriatic coast. The region where Urbisaglia rose is not so far from the Umbrian-Marchigiano Apennine where Etruscan place names such as Rasenna and Perugia can be found. In fact, sections of an Etruscan city wall can still be found in Perugia, confirming the existence of a former settlement there. Among the diverse groups that settled in the region there were the Umbri, who gave their name to Umbria, the Gauls, who left their name to Senigallia, and the Piceni. Many precious artefacts have been discovered in the burial grounds of the Arcevia archaeological zone, which are now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche. The Urbs built by the Etruscans should not be imagined as a large city since the Urbs on the Tiber, that is to say the square walls that surrounded Rome, only occupied the same area as the summit of the Palatium or the Palatine hill. In fact, the remains of 8th century huts have been found within its walls. The Urbs picena should be considered the twin of the Rome on the Tiber, erected near to the sacred hot springs of the god Granno; a diety as important for the Gauls as Jupiter was for the Romans. The fact that a Celtic deity came to be worshipped in the region indicates that Celtic and Etruscan settlements intermingled there. With the arrival of the Romans, Granno became known as Apollo-Granno, due to a process of assimilation between the Greek and Roman gods. This assimilation may have been influenced by the fact that the sanctuaries at Delphi and in Urbs picena rose in very similar locations; both were constructed on a slope a few miles from the sea and were characterized by the presence of an omphalus or navel. Two omphaloi still survive in Urbs 39 picena; one makes up the capitol of a Carolingian crypt in the nearby Church of Macchie, while the other is exhibited in the local archaeological museum. The existence of two twin Urbs named Rome has resulted in an erroneous retelling of the history of the Early Middle Ages. This particularly concerns the establishment of the new centre of Charlemagne’s empire in Val di Chienti at the beginning of the 10th century and also the Papacy’s decision to take refuge there when faced with an imminent threat from the Arabic forces. The Urbs Remensis which had replaced ancient Rome as an imperial capital, was forgotten during the Renaissance and when 19th century German historians reassessed the Middle Ages, tracing its history back to the modern era, they did so without the opportunity of identifying and distinguishing two different locations for Rome, France and Aquisgrana. Indeed, only local peasants from Urbisaglia continued to refer to their city as Rome. Perhaps the gravest errors were that Aquisgrana in Piceno was not distinguished from Aquisgrana in Germany, or Picenan France from Gaul. As such, the Middle Ages were considered obscurum because they were scattered with impenetrable mysteries. It is vital to understand that even in the time of Ancient Rome, two distinct Urbs existed. The fact that Christianity was adopted almost simultaneously on the Tiber and in Val di Chienti may be taken as further evidence of this. In fact, San Marone, who was regarded an apostle and protomartyr in Piceno, was a disciple of Saint Peter. After his martyrdom he was buried in Monte Aureo apud Urbem picenam and the ridge where Urbisaglia stands is still known as Montedoro today. It is documented that the cult of Apollo-Granno persisted until the 13th century. Dione Cassio recorded that Emperor Caracalla made a pilgrimage to the region and lavished great gifts upon the God, as well as other deities 40 which were venerated in the region, such as Iside and Esculapio. Furthermore, bricks bearing the stamp Salus Augusta have been discovered at the archaeological site of Urbisaglia. It seems logical therefore, that they were the result of a votive construction financed by the emperor. Local folklore asserts that a Roman city rose in the region which was inhabited by at least 20,000 people, which must surely refer to Urbis Salvia. Although excavations have not unearthed a single insula (living quarter), a theatre, ampitheatre and a temple dating from both the Republican and Imperial ages have been uncovered. It may be asserted that it was an ancient centre of Pagan culture. If it did become a city, as Dante Aghileri testifies, it must have been a medieval city constructed primarily of wood. Further historical events in Aquisgrana At this point it is possible to draw together, although they may be broad outlines, the structure of Picenan France. This included the Palatium, Urbs, the Ministeria, the Villa Theodonis, the centre of Ornat and the two Campus Longus where the two ancient Roman roads ended. This structure remained substantially unaltered by Charlemagne and his successors; the Emperors Louis the Pious, Lothair I and Lothair II, who was the King of Lotaringia and had his court in Aquisgrana. A crisis during the latter’s reign would affect political stability in the region. Lothair II was unable to bear children with Regina Teutberga and was unsuccessful in his attempts to have the offspring of his concubine Valdrada legitimized. Therefore, upon his death, possession of Aquisgrana was claimed by his uncles Charles the Bald and Ludovic the German. The former, who was the younger of the two, travelled down into Europe and was coronated Emperor. The latter sent 41 occupying troops to Italy, lead first by his son Carloman and then by Charles III himself, who was anointed in the Spring of 881, before making his way north and returning to Germany. Immediately after these events occurred, the region of Aquisgrana was invaded and sacked by Arabic troops; an utterly disastrous turn of events. Of the splendid buildings which had been erected, only the Laterano and the chapel which adjoined it remained, all the others were destroyed. The trauma suffered by the Empire and the Papacy must have been comparable only to the sacking of Rome perpetrated by Alarico in 410. It has already been mentioned that the Pope, Emperor Charles the Fat and Orso, the Doge of Venice subsequently met in San Leo to prepare a powerful war machine on land and sea which would prove strong enough to force the invaders out of Val di Chienti. The reconquest took place between the Spring and Summer of the following year, 882. Though the valley was liberated, the devastation wreaked by the invaders was revealed in all it tragedy: the Palatine Chapel was the only building which remained of Aquisgrana. It had not been destroyed because it had because the occupying forces had converted it into a stable. Nevertheless, Pope John VIII settled there, his return to Lazio prevented by the vulnerability of the region to Arabic incursions. The period that followed goes under the name of the saeculum obscurum. Although it is no longer seen in this light, this matter will not be discussed in this publication. Epistola I). 61 a pag. 36 a pag. 43. Vedi i cap. 8, 9, 10. Indam 70 (oggi Santa Croce all’Ete)… et Aquense palatium. AD HONORE D(OMI)NI NOSTRI IH(ES)U XR(IST)I ET S(AN)C(T)E D(E)I IENETRICIS SE(M)P(ER) / VIRGINIS MARIE EGO QUIDEM URSUS PECCATOR / DUX FIERI IUSSI ROGO VOS OM(NE)S QUI HUNC LEGITIS ORATE P(RO) ME/ TEMPORIBUS DOMNO IOH(ANNIS) P(A)P(E) ET KAROLI TERTIO IMP(ERATORIS) IND(ICTIONE) XV /. 108 Lacerto pergamenaceo contenente i «neumi» musicali. È conservato presso l’Archivio di Stato di Macerata. 110 DISLOCAZIONE DEI «MINISTERIA» NEL TERRITORIO PICENO • de Castellioni • de Plombariano • Sancti Stephani • de Sonile • de Murro • Sancti Benini • Sancti Rustici • de Colonia • de Albula • Sancti Benedicti PESARO • Sancti Firmani • de Monte Sancto • de Sancto Paterniano • de Sancto Juliano • Sancti Laurentii • de Valle • de Spartiano • de Sancto Claudio • Tebaldi • de Regiano • de Nuce • de Sancto Elpidio • de Sancto Justo • de Ulmo • Sancti Cassiani • de Forcella • de Sancto Severino ANCONA MACERATA FERMO ASCOLI PICENO 111
