Gian Galeazzo Visconti, first Duke of Milano, 1378
created the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo in
order to take care of the construction of the
Cathedral and to raise the funds needed.
Galeazzo Maria Sforza in 1437 decided to give to the
Fabbriceria del Duomo the exclusive right to use the
Candoglia quarries which were his property, resticting
use of the marble to construction of the Cathedral and
prohibiting its trade

che nel 1387 istituì la Veneranda Fabbrica del
Duomo per provvedere alla costruzione della
Cattedrale e all’approvvigionamento di fondi ad
essa necessari
Fu di Galeazzo Maria Sforza la decisione di cedere,
nel 1437, alla fabbriceria del duomo l’uso esclusivo
delle cave di Candoglia di proprietà ducale,
vincolando il marmo bianco rosato alla costruzione
della Cattedrale e vietandone il commercio.

Carlo Borromeo, Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan,
was one of the most emblematic personages in the
history of Duomo; it was he who made the changes
to the internal architecture of the Cathedral.
Thanks to the genius of Leonardo da Vinci and to his
unequaled work, it was possible to transport the
marble from Candoglia directly to the Cathedral
construction site, along the Navigli, the Milan canal
system.
Carlo Borromeo, cardinale ed arcivescovo di
Milano, fu una delle figure emblematiche per la
storia del Duomo, egli infatti fu l’artefice delle
modifiche all’architettura interna della Cattedrale.

Carelli was a rich merchant and the first big
donor to the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.
On his death, he left his entire inheritance to the
Duomo. Part of this legacy was used to start
construction of the first spire of the Duomo. It
was finished in 1404 and a statue of Saint
George was placed on top of it; ever since it has
been called the Carelli Spire.
Carelli fu un ricco mecenate, primo grande
donatore della Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo
a cui lasciò alla sua morte l’intera eredità. Con
una parte del suo lascito si avviò la
costruzione della prima guglia del Duomo,
completata nel 1404, sormontata dalla statua
di san Giorgio e da allora chiamata Guglia
Carelli.
With this donation, it will be possible to sponsor
a spire and, to honor this personage, the
members of the Carelli Circle will be able to
have their names included in the Book of
Donors of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo
and become part of the Board of Trustees of
International Patrons of Duomo di Milano
(subject to the approval of the candidacy by the
board itself).
Con questo contributo sarà possibile adottare
una Guglia e proprio in onore di questa figura i
membri del Carelli Circle potranno entrar
nell’albo dei donatori della Veneranda
