Ammirando un presepe
Admiring a crib
na cascata di case color pastello. La Costiera Amalfitana va percorsa lentamente,
guidando con il mare a fianco in un paesaggio sempre nuovo che, curva dopo
curva, è una continua sorpresa.
Lasciando la strada che costeggia il mare, ci si arrampica sulla collina e dopo quattro o
cinque tornanti appare Ravello, un piccolo e silenzioso borgo di origine romana del VI secolo
a strapiombo sul mare. Palazzi e ville con giardini lussureggianti hanno ispirato artisti ed
intellettuali come Gide e Wagner e, tutt’oggi, fanno da cornice ai concerti di musica sinfonica
e da camera del Ravello Festival. Vicino alla piazza principale, di fronte ad una deliziosa
chiesetta barocca, l’hotel è un antico palazzo bianco ed imponente, trasformato in albergo
nei primi del ‘900 dalla famiglia nobiliare dei Caruso da cui ha preso il nome. Nella sapiente
ristrutturazione, fatta alcuni anni fa, sono state mantenute le caratteristiche architettoniche e
decorative originali come i pavimenti a mosaico ed i soffitti affrescati che si possono ammirare
nei vari saloni, dove è piacevole fermarsi a leggere un libro od a sorseggiare un aperitivo.
Non appena varcata la soglia si è circondati da un ambiente signorile ed elegante e con
un’atmosfera piena di cordialità. Sembra di essere già stati lì più volte. Il ristorante è in
terrazza con vista panoramica sulla Costiera: la sera è come ammirare un magnifico presepe
e, al minimo brivido di freddo, per le signore è subito pronto uno scialle! Prodotti locali
freschissimi e di qualità per la cucina, di alta classe ma semplice ed accurata, che propone
specialità tipiche, rivisitate, come i paccheri fatti in casa ed i deliziosi crostacei pescati nel
Golfo sottostante Le camere, ampie e spaziose, sono tutte diverse tra loro. L’arredamento,
appositamente creato per questo elegante hotel, riflette lo stile e la tradizione napoletana. I
balconi ed i giardini privati hanno arredi in ferro battuto con inserti a mosaico ed una romantica

vista sul mare. Un ulteriore raffinatezza è rappresentata dal fornitissimo frigo bar pieno di
squisitezze enogastronomiche per tutti i gusti: dalle dolcezze di Fauchon allo champagne, al
Chianti Toscano ed….altro ancora.
Il bagno è suddiviso in tre ambienti separati: doccia, servizi e lavabi con vasca e lascia spazio
ad un’ampia cabina armadio. Dedicato ad ogni lavabo un personalizzato servizio di cortesia
Bulgari e Penhaligon’s: per lei al tè bianco, e, per lui, al tè verde.
La colazione è un momento importante dove il buffet di profumatissima frutta fresca la fa da
padrone al pari delle sfogliatelle, delle mozzarelle e delle torte tipiche. Il tutto da portare al
proprio tavolo in piatti di ceramica dai colori sgargianti fatti a mano, uno diverso dall’altro.
Almeno una volta fate colazione in camera: per chi non ha mai visto la Costiera Amalfitana,
il sorgere del sole è da non perdere. Un giardino terrazzato con roseto e piante aromatiche,
fa da corollario alla suggestiva piscina panoramica che al primo impatto lascia senza parole:
sospesa tra un cielo di cobalto ed un mare turchese, trasparente, dalle striature del verde e
del viola. Fra le attenzioni riservate agli ospiti, il centro benessere ed una romantica escursione
a bordo di una tipica barca in legno alla scoperta di borghi e calette nascoste.

driving along the coastal road in an area that is always different at every turn, and
always full of surprises. Leave the coastal road, climb up the hill, and after four
or five bends you will arrive at Ravello, a small and tranquil 6th century hamlet of Roman origin,
which falls steeply to sea. Its “palazzi” and villas with their luxuriant gardens have inspired
both artists and intellectuals, such as Gide and Wagner. Even today, Ravello still hosts both
symphonic and chamber music concerts at the Ravello Festival . Close to the main square,
in front of a beautiful Baroque church, an imposing white palace that was transformed in the
early 1900’s by the Caruso family, from whom the hotel takes its name. During the highly skilled
restoration, undertaken a few years ago, the original features have been retained, including
the mosaic floors and decorative frescoed ceilings which can be admired from the various
lounges where one can sit peacefully reading a book, or enjoying an aperitif. You barely
have to cross the threshold to feel surrounded by an elegant ambience and a refined, but
always cordial, atmosphere, so that it will seem as if you have visited many times before.The
restaurant is on the terrace, with a panoramic view of the coast. In the evening it is possible
to admire a magnificent crib, and should any of the ladies start to feel chilly, there is always a
shawl on hand. Top quality, fresh, local produce is used in the high-class gastronomy, which
is simple, but made with the utmost skill and care, offering typical specialities, such as homemade “paccheri” and the not-to-be-missed crustaceans, freshly fished from the bay below.
The bedrooms are ample and spacious, but all different in style. The furnishings have been
especially created for this elegant hotel, reflecting the Neapolitan style and tradition. The
balconies and private gardens have wrought iron furniture with mosaic inserts and a romantic
view out over the sea. Further refinement is to be found in the well-stocked mini-bar, which
is full to the brim with exquisite gastronomic delights catering for all tastes, from Fauchon’s
sweets through champagne to Tuscan Chianti and more.
The bathroom is an impressive area and is divided into three separate spaces: shower, bath,
“servizi”and washbasins, but still leaving plenty of room for a cabin-wardrobe. For each basin
there is a personalised set of Bulgari or Penhaligon’s toiletries, white tea for the ladies, green
tea for the gentlemen. The day begins with breakfast, prepared with the same expertise as
the other meals, a buffet full of fresh sweet smelling fruit plays an important role alongside
the pastries, mozzarellas and cakes typical of the area. All this can be brought to your table
on beautiful, brightly coloured ceramic or majolica plates, all hand made and individual. You
should experience breakfast in your room at least once: if you have never been to the Amalfi
coast, the rising of the sun is a sight not to be missed. A terraced rose garden with aromatic
plants surrounds the panoramic, romantic swimming pool, which leaves one speechless at the
first encounter, suspended between a cobalt sky and a turquoise transparent sea, shimmering
green and violet. In addition to all the other facilities available, the health-conscious may enjoy
a visit to the health centre, whilst others may choose to take a romantic excursion on board a
typical wooden boat, in search of hidden coves and hamlets.
