On 15 April the Board of Directors of Ansaldo Energia approved the Company’s financial statements, closing fiscal 2003 with an operating result of Euro 38m, confirming the positive trend of recent years. New appointments to the Board, in addition to Chairman Giuseppe Veredice, are Directors Giampiero Cutillo, Roberto Maglione and Simone Bemporad. The results, which confirm the upward trend that began in 2001, are the product of restructuring initiatives and the favourable market scenario in 2000/2001, which has made it possible to adopt more selective criteria in the acquisition of new contracts. In addition to the more streamlined internal structure, the Company’s new strategic objectives are focused on enhancing the value of the power generation business and on reorganising the service segment to exploit future opportunities to the full. The order book has been affected by bureaucratic delays in connection with new power stations in Italy, mainly to approve new sites. It is hoped that new power stations approvals will be forthcoming in the near future, allowing the Company to acquire major new orders on the Italian market, which remains a cornerstone of Ansaldo Energia commercial strategy. Service business, which is forecast to grow in coming years, is being driven by the rise in the installed machinery fleet and gas turbine sales in 2000/2001. On the international market, the Company continues to select projects carefully to contain risks and optimise financial aspects. In the Nuclear Division, 90% of new order awards were from international markets, a reversal of the situation in recent years, during which the domestic market has prevailed. As a whole, 2003 was a year of organisational stability, with a focus on reviewing and upgrading operating processes to maximise corporate reliability and efficiency. The new portion of the contract, which entered force on 1 January 2004, allows work to get underway on bought-in components and Rosignano site specific design work. Ansaldo is expected to start work on site in September 2004. Under the terms of the contract, the plant must be delivered within 31 months from receiving the EPC, or by the end of July 2006. The acquisition of the Rosignano contract will consolidate Ansaldo’s experience working with new generation gas turbines in the V94.3A line (with output greater than 200 MW), representing the company’s second reference for a single shaft configuration rated about 400 MW. This solution appears to be of special interest to many clients thanks to its optimum space usage and high performance. In fact, the Rosignano combined cycle plant delivers a net installed power of 385 MW, with a net efficiency of 56.4% in ISO conditions. The contract award for the Rosignano plant also consolidates Ansaldo’s relationship with Electrabel, to which it supplied the “power train” for the Voghera plant and relative Long Term Service Agreements. NEW ORDERS AND RESULTS The Nuclear Division has recently won four new orders: two for radioactive waste management and two for the provision of operating services to support and increase the safety of nuclear plants in Eastern Europe. In radioactive waste management, at the end of last year the Nuclear Division signed a contract with Sogin S.p.A. for the design, procurement, construction and turn-key delivery to the ENEA Research Center at Saluggia (Vercelli) of a facility to safely store 100 cubic meters of high level radioactive liquid waste deriving from irradiated fuel element reprocessing at the Eurex Center. The facility, scheduled for completion in 18 months, basically consists of three stainless steel tanks equipped with transfer, interconnection and sampling lines, located in a building capable of withstanding seismic forces and aircraft impact. The facility will act as the physical and functional interface between the existing storage facility and the liquid waste conditioning and solidification plant to be built at the same site. In January 2004 the Division was awarded a contract to build a facility for the Treatment of the Backlog of Radioactive Waste Water at Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. The contract, which forms part of the EC’s TACIS programme and for which Ansaldo is leading a joint venture partnership with local installation firm YuzhTeploEnergoMontazh, extends the scope of Ansaldo’s activities in the field of radioactive waste treatment. It also consolidates the company’s business in the Ukraine, representing a valuable spin-off from ongoing projects for the Liquid Radwaste Treatment Plant and the Shelter Integrated Monitoring System at the Chernobyl site. Il completamento di tali attività ed il primo caricamento del combustibile sono previsti entro maggio-giugno 2004. basically consists of a double centrifugation separation system for sludge which is then dried and sealed in 200 l drums, plus the relative lifting and handling system. So far as service activities are concerned, two contracts have recently been signed, with funding also provided by the European Commission’s Tacis Programme, following two successful bids put in by the joint venture led by Ansaldo with Empresarios Agrupados Internacional (Spain) and Konexp-Vnilaes (Russian Federation). The beneficiary of these service projects is the VVER type Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant of Armenia, which is receiving support from Italian EC consultant SOGIN in the form of safety upgrade programme assistance for this old nuclear power plant of Russian design. The goal of the two closely linked projects is to investigate the applicability of the Leak Before Break (LBB) concept to the plant’s primary coolant piping, in accordance with best practice in the West (LOT 1), as well as to provide the design and technical specifications of Leak Detection Systems (LDS) and In Service Inspection (ISI) procedures (LOT 2). Still in the area of operating services for Soviet concept VVER plants, and in particular the modernisation of fuel handling machines, the nuclear division has recently achieved a number of significant results. Half way through last year acceptance tests were successfully completed at Atommash on the Fuel Handling Machine Control System for the Volgodonsk Operator Training Center in Russia. The micro-processor technology based control systems supplied by Ansaldo can implement a completely automatic fuel handling cycle that delivers extremely high levels of reliability. Between March and August 2003, the Nuclear Division successfully completed preliminary acceptance tests on two similar systems for Units 1 and 2 of the Tianwan VVER 1000 Nuclear Power Plant in the People’s Republic of China. Installation and commissioning work on the system for the first unit got underway in September at the Tianwan site. Completion of work and the first loading campaign are scheduled for May-June 2004. 7 L A BRANCH DI ABU DHABI RILANCIA L’ATTIVITÀ IN MEDIO ORIENTE Con l’obiettivo di rilanciare l’attività commerciale in Medio Oriente si è recentemente “rinforzato” il presidio continuo dei principali clienti e partners potenziali attivi nella zona. 8 A NSALDO ENERGIA STRENGHT ITS PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST With a view to upgrading its sales activities in the Middle East, Ansaldo Energia recently strengthened its on going market presence with the main clients and potential partners in the area. The area, which is an important traditional market for the company, is characterised by strong electric power demand growth, in the order of 10% annually in certain countries. This is primarily due to a growing population and concerted efforts to industrialise the area, supported by the upward trend of oil prices. Taken as a whole, the Gulf represents a potential market of about 25,000 MW over the next 5 years, plus significant service prospects, both for spare parts (we have an installed base of about 4500 MW) and plant maintenance/rehabilitation work. One of the projects currently being pursued by Ansaldo Energia in the area is the 550 MW combined cycle Sohar-Oman plant, for which the company is bidding as EPC Contractor in a tender extended to all the main international investors and builders in the sector. V ISION 2000 Last autumn, as in previous years, the Company successfully passed supervision/renewal inspections for its welding, environment and quality management system certifications. This year, with the renewal of the Quality Management System from the 1994 edition of Uni En Iso 9001 to the 2000 version, generally known as Vision 2000, the consolidated body of existing system documentation required review. The new edition of the standard requires all corporate activities to form part of integrated production processes (offer, order award and management, design, procurement, production, erection and commissioning), with a view to the company operating with greater synergy and less compartmentalisation. The Corporate Management System (ex Quality) Manual now also embraces environment, health and safety issues, providing a vision of how these factors enter corporate processes and interact with the various activities performed. The requirements of the Corporate Management System also involve the concepts of constant improvement and measurement, so that processes can be correctly and comprehensively assessed in terms of efficiency and effectiveness using appropriate performance indicators. The full awareness that we can offer and build products on time and to cost, guaranteeing technical quality and reliable performance, is not only the key to our company’s continued success, but also a source of great satisfaction. 10 At the end of January 2004, Enel Green Power and Ansaldo Energia signed a contract to supply replacement rotors for 60 MW steam turbines currently in service in various geothermal fields in the Larderello area. Four 60 MW turbines were ordered from Ansaldo Energia by Enel on 20 December 1985, entering service between 1991 and 2001 at the Valle Secolo (2 units), Nuova Serrazzano (1 unit) and Farinello (1 unit) power stations. In order to mitigate the erosive/corrosive effects of the endogenous/geothermal steam, the following component innovations have been developed and introduced on a joint basis with Enel Green Power based on experience acquired over more than 250,000 hours of service: • application of a protective blade coating • innovative/modified materials used for various blading details • new steam seal system Enel Green Power and Ansaldo Energia are also working together on other projects to improve the performance of the geothermal turbines currently in service and extend their residual life. Allo scopo di verificare la capacità del gruppo di contribuire al controllo di frequenza, ogni Cliente chiede che vengano eseguiti un certo numero di test tenendo presenti i requisiti minimi dettati dalle norme del Due to the new regulations of energy market which create a clearly separation between the energy productors and distributors, each power plant or power generator unit have to participate to substain the grid frequency during the fast power transients. The normal operation of a power plant allows changes in power of some percent of nominal rated power; it’s evident that the mentioned normal gradients are not sufficient to guarantee an adequate variation of power output in order to avoid high grid frequency variations which, if the deviation is higher than admissible range, would cause grid collapse. In the next future almost all power plants should be capable to guarantee a spinning reserve, in other words, some units will work at an intermediate power output condition, making possible a power step which can reach base load or stopping at the required level of grid support. GT have a fundamental rule in this matter because, thanks to the principle of working and the design itself, this kind of machine allows quick supply of increased power starting from almost each possible operating condition. Looking at combined cycles, since the steam turbines can not guarantee a prompt power output augmentation, because they operate in “valve wide open“ condition, gas turbines rule becomes again fundamental because in the first transient time, GTs have to compensate also to the ST power portion. In order to be sure that the relevant generating unit is able to guarantee the necessary contribution to the frequency control, each Customer asks for a certain number of tests taking into account as minimum requirement the regulation of the country where the plant will be installed and, sometimes, increasing the severity of acceptance criteria. In this regard, the most important recent Ansaldo experience have been done in the period from march to august 2003 during the commissioning of Ballylumford Power Plant in Northern Ireland (turn key supply by Ansaldo) where Ansaldo’s gas turbines (two V94.2 units) together with entire power plant were subjected to the very strictly requirements of Nie (Northern Ireland) grid code. In the following of the article, we will focus the attention on the most important parameters that allows to meet the required spinning reserve and governor droop response maintaining all process parameters within the admissible ranges, acting on V 94.2 gas turbines , where the entire control system has been designed and engineered by Ansaldo Energia. During the fastest gradients, the most critical gas turbine parameter is the exhaust temperature which increase together with the power output until 50 % of base load, then the same temperature is kept constant, as far as possible, by varying the IGV (inlet guide vanes) position; in other words, the IGV position adequate the amount of air processed by the compressor to the fuel injected in the combustion chambers favouring a stable combustion and keeping the TETC (turbine exit temperature corrected) at the constant/desired value. The necessity to have a constant exhausted temperature is due to the necessity to maximise the life of the gas turbine and to avoid high HRSG thermal stresses. The above base concept highlights the necessity to have a fast and, as far as possible, synchronised control of fuel gas/fuel oil control valves and inlet guide vanes. All the fuel control valves are hydraulically actuated responding in a very short time to the position set point elaborated by speed/load controllers. The IGV control is the critical factor because of the following reasons: The actuator is normally motor operated and the travel time from completely open to completely closed is not comparable with the fuel control valves actuators. non è paragonabile con quello delle valvole del combustibile. The IGV controller elaborates the required position, which consider the temperature measured at the exhaust duct. This kind of control introduces a delay error due to the time constants of the measuring circuit. The a.m. limitations have been solved by adopting a technical solution which differs from standard application; the fast IGV actuator of hydraulic type installed on V94.2 GTs of Ballylumford power plant has a travel time that is more than five time faster than the normal actuator, moreover, the structure of the IGV controller has been modified adding a trollore è stata modificata aggiungendo un’azione “feed-forward” che considera anche il set point di carico. “feed forward” action that takes in account the load set point. In this manner, the exhaust temperature remains almost constant during the fastest load transient because the IGV controller is able to anticipate the IGV position with respect to the exhaust temperature variation. The Ballylumford Power Plant is composed of: A combined cycle with two V94.2 gas turbines and one steam turbine. A combined cycle with one V64.3A gas turbine and one steam turbine in single shaft configuration. HE NEW REGULATION SYSTEMS Within the modernization project of the Enel Gem coal-based power plant of Genoa, Ansaldo Energia won the contract for the replacement of the old rotating excitation system of 190 MVA steam generator with a new static one, EMC certified. This new system has a microprocessor digital regulation and also seawater heat exchangers for the air-closed cooling system of power converter bridges. The supply also includes the following: power connections of excitation panel by means of cable and bar ducts, auxiliary connections with control room, plant supervision and protections, excitation transformer installation and board for generator voltage measuring. The replacement of components was preceded by a long phase of accurate work as a consequence of the special arrangement of the old system. Old components were removed and/or demolished and then replaced with the new components which complied with the needs of the pre-existing plant and the technical specifications requested by the Customer as far as new technologies are concerned. These systems were mainly used abroad but have now achieved widespread approval in Italy too. In fact, after the thermoelectric plant in Genoa, contracts were won for the modernization of the voltage regulation systems of turbogenerator units of 370 MVA installed in the combined cycle plants of the Customer Endesa: Ostiglia and Tavazzano. The systems used had greater capacity (up to 5000A) and were cooled with closed cycle deionized water systems. Thanks to the great experience gained by Ansaldo Energia in the field of these last generation products and the sensibility to comply with the need of its own Customers, the new regulation systems include the most technologically advanced functions such as: PLC programmable logics, complete redundancy of electronic circuits, static de-energization, diagnostic interface with operating system, con interfaccia operatore, trasmissione dei dati tramite rete Ethernet, sincronizzazione oraria degli eventi mediante segnale da GPS, in grado di ottenere prestazioni ed affidabilità superiori a tutte le richieste della rete elettrica. 16 A NSALDO ENERGIA TO REINFORCE PRESENCE IN ROMANIA Ansaldo Energia, which has been operating successfully in Romania since the early 1980s when work started on Unit 1 at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, now intends to expand into the conventional power market in the country. During a symposium organised by the company in Bucarest, attended both by corporate management and numerous engineers from the main power stations operating in the country, Ansaldo presented detailed credentials and references on its maintenance capabilities (repair and service), as well as on the rehabilitation of power stations. The provision of qualified maintenance services has become a very sought after commodity for the international power companies operating on the Romanian market, particularly in consideration of the creation of a competitive market when maintenance services were outsourced by power companies starting last year. The next step involves the preparation of technicalcommercial offers, complete with funding solutions and the possibility of contributing to new investments in the power sector. Giovanni Villabruna receives 2003 Nine O’Clock award In Bucarest, at the Nine O’Clock ‘man of the year 2003’ award Ceremony in the Marriott Hotel - attended by numerous guests, including ministers, politicians and Romanian and international businessmen - Giovanni Villabruna was awarded a special prize by the Jury as Ansaldo Energia’s representative in Romania. The motivation for the award given by the jury is “On the completion of twenty years’ constant work for Romania, for Italy’s contribution to the completion of work on the Romanian reactor of unit 1 at the Cernavoda nuclear power station and its work on the second unit”. Over the last seven years since the award’s introduction, various personalities from polities, business, culture and sport have received prizes. This year a total of seven prizes were awarded. Most of Ansaldo Energia’s purchases by volume are materials and components needed to manufacture for power generators applications. However, a considerable number of orders refer to consumables for which the cost of the order process is significant, as the total amount of each of these orders is generally less than Euro 2,000. In 2000 Ansaldo began to take a series of measures to rationalise this type of transaction, attempting to fulfil requirements without unduly burdening the purchasing process. Frequently ordered, low value materials not directly related to the production process were therefore analysed and, based on a framework order fixing the prices of materials, a web-based catalogue of maintenance materials, consumables and tools was prepared. The web catalogue, through which all purchases of the aforementioned categories of products are channelled, is available to users provided with a username, a password and a monthly expenditure budget to make purchases directly, combining Request for Quotation and Purchase order in a single transaction. The web-based catalogue is used to prepare a single monthly order, reducing the global cost of the purchasing process. After testing this innovative purchasing approach for two years, Ansaldo Energia accepted Finmeccanica’s invitation to act as a pilot company for the project launched in 2002 to negotiate centralised contracts as a way of exploiting the synergies between group companies. 18 mentation of a SAP module with an interface to the web catalogues. The new product (EBP Enterprise Buyer Professional) was developed by Elsag and entered production in February 2004. It brings together the web catalogues of various suppliers in a single environment, eliminating time wasted searching for sites or memorising http addresses. EBP is a unified environment containing links to various external catalogues, as well as ensuring respect for and control over the procedures the corporate system requires for the correct issue and management of purchase orders (alignment with order opening/closing dates, accounting updates, type of order, etc.). Enabled users make their purchases directly on-line, using a shopping trolley that is transformed into an order on receipt of the relative authorisations. SAP R/3 transforms the information into a formal Purchase Order and sends it to the supplier in XML format, all in real time, reducing timewasting and costs. When the purchasing process has been completed, the user receives an order confirmation by email sent to their own address, reducing still further the time required to deliver the material directly to the appropriate desk. This new procedure will make it possible to implement a strategy addressed to reducing direct and indirect costs arising from various factors, including misunderstandings, losses and other errors. G ENOVA 2004: AN EXHIBITION OF KNOWING HOW TO In the framework of Genova, European Capital of Culture 2004, Ansaldo Energia and other Genoa-based Finmeccanica companies are sponsoring “Genova del Saper fare” [Genoa knows how to], an exhibition about work, business and technology from 24 April to 25 July at the Magazzini dell’Abbondanza, Via del Molo 2. The exhibition will focus on working culture, business and technology. Dynamic, interactive communication techniques will be used to present issues closely linked to today’s urban reality and its roots in economic and social history, not only in Genoa, but throughout Italy. Each of the exhibition rooms focuses on one particular subject: A sea of ships, Iron & Steel, Machinery, Businesses for contemporary safety, A focus on business and work, Technology at play, Towards a post-industrial city, The city of the future; eight exhibitions within an exhibition, the ports of call in an engaging itinerary through the “City that knows how to”. Cutting edge, interactive, multi-media technology offers visitors a journey through space and time past, present and future, with interactive images, words and sounds. It offers an opportunity to explore a city which, from the port to industry, at sea and on the shore, designs, builds and transports goods and services throughout the world thanks to the know-how of its businessmen, workers, engineer and researchers. The exhibition venue, Magazzini dell’Abbondanza, has recently been renovated as part of a project promoted by the Province of Genoa on a joint basis with Genoa University. The two year project, which was completed in 2002, involved restoring the original spaces and sequence of quadri-vaulted ceilings supported by a central column, the introduction of a double pyramid slate roof and the construction of a terrace with hanging garden and panoramic view. 20 R OTARY CONFERENCE A conference on the subject “Tomorrow’s energy” was organised recently by local Rotary Clubs at the Amga Auditorium. The conference takes its cue from the importance of the role electric power culture has and continues to play in Genoa’s industrial reality. Professor Sergio Garibba, General Director of Energy Sources at the Italian Ministry of Production Activities, and Professor Giuseppe Gatti, Erg Power & Gas Chairman, vigorously presented the cases for and against liberalisation, emphasising how the free market requires a very high level of coordination between numerous different subjects. In fact, it is was precisely a lack of this coordination which caused the remarkable number of blackouts throughout the world in 2003. It was also pointed out that worries over limiting consumption in peak periods has led to the introduction of new pricing rules, which are expected to drive a further increase in the average cost of energy in 2004. Other speakers taking part illustrated the prospects, and the limits, of the various non-traditional sources now under development. Giorgio Palazzi of Enea stressed the technological effort still needed to exploit solar power on a large scale and said that he expected this to be achieved after 2020. Ansaldo Energia Chairman Angelo Airaghi draw the attention of those present to the anomalous situation that persists in Italy as regards nuclear power, despite the significant technological capabilities the country has developed in the fields of both nuclear fission and fusion, and encouraged the government to support Italian industry in its initiatives abroad. Gian Maria Gabrieli underlined the benefits for the forest ecosystem deriving from the use of biomasses. Professor Zorzoli described the new frontier represented by hydrogen as a power vector, illustrating the financial and sociopolitical obstacles to the realisation of a centralised hydrogen production, storage and distribution system in the short term. A distributed production scenario linked to the development of fuel cells is more likely, but once again the realisation timescale is not short term.
