Giovanna Grossato n 1928 the writer Paul Valéry affirmed that "for twenty years now neither matter nor space nor time have been what they always had been. It is to be expected that a novelty on such a scale would also transform the whole artistic technique and act on the idea of invention too, to the extent of modifying the very idea of art itself unforeseeably." There can be no doubt that since the beginning of the XX century, the concept of "art" has changed radically and Walter Benjamin in his work The work of art in the age of Mechanical Reproduction further helped the reflection on the significance of the intervention of science and technology in the creative process. Reproductions also existed in antiquity: portraits in series of the emperor scattered across the lands conquered by the Roman were the products of workshops of marble craftsmen in Rome or in the colonies. The famous bust-portrait of the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti conserved in Berlin would have been a prototype for multiple portraits. And then, when in 1496-98 Albrecht Dürer carved the woodcuts for the Apocalypse, his intention was to distribute them in printed reproductions. The same was the case 200 years later with Goya and his aquatints and etchings of the Caprichos, and with William Hogarth, author of satirical prints on fashionable themes and London society. But along with coherent filiations, such as industrial design and the silk-screen prints of Andy Warhol, leader of the "art multiples" school, reproduction also generated some aberrations, ones which were equally useful however for new reflections on the idea of serial art. If it is a merit of the creation of multiples – both artisanal and industrial – starting from prototypes designed by artists, that it broadened the enjoyment of art, the current "mechanical reproduction" can also give rise to various "curiosities". Such as, for example, the three million visitors in Paris in 2012 to the exhibition of the Tutankhamen's treasures in the Parc des Expositions and then the many more during all the stages of the successful tour that followed in the main European cities, even if it was only a question of perfect reproductions in chemical plastics. A similar fate is that of the famous prehistoric frescoes in the Lascaux caves, which can only be seen by means of copies set up not far from the original site. The same applies to the photographic "clone" of Veronese's The Marriage Feast at Cana created in 2007 by the digital artist, Adam Lowe, indistinguishable from the original in the Louvre, and placed in its original position in the refectory of S. Giorgio in Venice after an absence of 210 years to the delight of the public. If artistic enjoyment in the current technosphere is happy enough to contemplate works in facsimile (apparently complete with their "aura"), it is necessary to begin to rethink what the aesthetic experience has or has not become today, often not separate from the cogent communications bombardment that accompanies "remade" artworks and major exhibitions. She is a Friulano artist, who has strong ties with the city of Venice, where she teaches at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Her approach to artistic research does not only indicate a special way of relating to space, but also a way of considering objects in groups and series, objects that take their meaning in relationship to the environment where they are placed. Treppo’s installations, such as the two recent ones: Riabitare / Re-living at Palazzo Caiselli (Udine, 2011) and Assetto temporaneo on the island of Sant’Erasmo (Venice 2012), are pervasive, modular installations that spread out throughout the environment. They are reminiscent of minimalist, serial compositions, but they are carried out with objects that contain some evident narrative value. They always hint at different spaces: Domestic spaces that were once inhabited and are now abandoned by people, whose presence can still be felt through they objects they left behind; those of an archaeological dig or find waiting to be put in order; the spaces of a building site or a place of work where shapes are deposited, perhaps to be discarded or waiting to be used again. In Sospensione (Vicenza, 2012), the installation seems museumlike, almost as if to mark the relationship with an environment which is rich with history, but turned to a contemporary use, filled with specially designed glass shelves which emphasise the condition of the found object, of that which is being exhibited. Glass is a recurrent element in Cristina Treppo’s work and in Sospensione it serves as a device whose transparency and lightness contrast with the material nature of the objects it supports. The sizes and types bear witness to a relationship with daily life: they recall food jars and containers, or bottles and vials for cosmetics, which seem to have the pinkish remains of some ointments or balsam left in the bottom. Cushions- a recurrent object which we will look at again- and photographs of orchids are objects which speak of an intimacy tied to rest, dreams and drifting off. The space which is created almost evokes sleepwalking, it lingers between day and night where the story of a some small catastrophe is told, reminding us of certain interiors or of human forms transformed into statues of volcanic ash. In this instance it has not been caused by clouds of toxic dust, rather the catastrophe seems to have happened inside the objects, by pouring in a liquid material which has then slowly thickened. Treppo has used wax in previous works, and here uses cement in the same way. Her works are moulds of objects, and yet together they become a calcified cross-section of reality. The scale of the objects in Sospensione, their serial nature, the height and the way in which they are displayed, seem to invite the viewer to chose and to touch them. The delicate patterns of embroidery imprinted on the cushions invite the viewer to try their softness. But if they were to give in to curiosity and pick up one of those objects, they would be confounded by the weight of the objects on show. It would cause a short circuit between what the eye sees and what the hand actually perceives. Cristina Treppo talks of mimesis in reference to her works: this mimesis however does not lie in the more or less realistic portrayal of aspects of life, but rather as an indication of a further reality, a second reality. Her installations are articulated according to the specific situation, becoming a mimicry of an archaeological dig, a museum space, a building site, a home. They are just as lifelike as the softness of a cement cushion “imitating” a real one, so closely that it might be confused with it. I believe that each artist is tempted to let their intuitions, visions or pre-figured shapes remain in the fluidity of thought and imagination. The translation of these intuitions into a determined shape implies care, effort, and responsibility in their realisation: a passage that forces that which has been imagined to assume a density, a weight. Treppo’s objects have a concrete nature and unquestionable reality. However this is a second reality, in relation to the first, which is not represented, but rather substituted by a bleached-out and dense version, with unexpected weight. It is a grouping of objects which almost blend in with the real ones, but are intentionally given away by the very material chosen for their passage from the ethereal state of imagination and vision to the mundane one. The pillow on which we used to dream is now a calcified pillow, making any dream impossible, stiffening its fluidity and making it ambiguously real. nell’altra pagina | on the other page Sconnesso 2012 Cemento, ossidi | Concrete, oxides cm. 20x87x51 in questa pagina | on this page Cuscino (7) 2012 Cemento, ossidi | Concrete, oxides cm. 3,5x30x29,5 Restituzione 2012 Cemento | Concrete 5x12x25 (ciascuno / each) Cristina Treppo 28/09/2013 - 03/11/2013 Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia Via Roma, 1 - Aquileia (UD) Cristina Treppo lives and works between Udine and Venice www.cristinatreppo.com 6 7 SILVIA CELESTE CALCAGNO Sublimi ossessioni di Alessandro Benetti I l “lungomare degli artisti” di Albissola Marina, realizzato nei primi anni ‘60 con il contributo di molti artigiani locali e di tanti nomi importanti della scena artistica del tempo (tra tutti, Lucio Fontana, Asger Jorn e Aligi Sassu), è un raro esempio di elevazione virtuosa dell’arredo urbano allo stato di opera d’arte. Una dialettica degli opposti permeata della convinzione che, mentre il nulla divora la carne, solo la rivendicazione di una femminilità potente e viva (le macchie di sangue lo testimoniano) possa sottrarre l’artista all’azione logorante del tempo che scorre. nell’altra pagina | on the other page Celeste 2013 Foto transfer su grès e porcellana (pezzo unico) Photo transfer on fireclay and porcelain (one-off pieces) cm. 40x50 in questa pagina | on this page Celeste So Happy 2013 Video SCC | Video SCC 9 SILVIA CELESTE CALCAGNO Sublime obsessions by Alessandro Benetti T he "artists' promenade at Albissola Marina, created in the early sixties with the contribution of many local artisans and of lots of important figures on the artistic stage at the time (including Lucio Fontana, Asger Jorn and Aligi Sassu) is a rare example of the virtuous elevation of urban furnishing to the status of artwork. A total of 20 mosaics are aligned along more than a kilometre and accompany the seafront stroll in this little Ligurian town, famous all over the world for its long tradition of ceramics. This is the home and workplace of Silvia Celeste Calcagno, a young artist of Genovese origin who has been able to create a virtuous bond with the culture of Albissola, above all by inheriting the preference for ceramic materials. Calcagno studied at the artistic high school and then at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti where she graduated as a ceramistdesigner in grès, a material that would become a protagonist in her linguistic research. Her excellent technical mastery, guaranteed by her specific training and consolidated over years of experimentation, is accompanied by the desire to explore the possibilities of grès beyond the customary uses, in a continuous dialogue with the definition of a poetic of the image which is continuously evolving. In the words of Paola Pluchino, what Calcagno achieves is "a path of sublimation from the earth to the image", a binomial in which the mouldable clay is the first term and the video-photographic is the second. Pushing herself beyond the confines of traditional photoceramics, the artist, with an openly empirical attitude, articulates the possible combinations of the material support and the exquisitely intangible component of the image that is impressed on it. "In times of the absolute predictability of the final outcome – the digital docet – here the result is not totally intuitable right from the first moment," Angela Madesani underlines. In this sense, the artisanal nature of the procedure allows Calcagno to protect the unicum of the work of art. Madesani himself recognizes echoes of the theory of Gilles Deleuze on difference in repetition in this attitude: the photographic image is continually reproduced in an identical manner but altered each time by the unpredictability of the process and by the unevenness of the support. The obsessive component is evident in Calcagno's photographic series which explores a borderland between reality and madness. The recent video Celeste, so happy (2013), for example, shows a woman from behind, intent on washing and rewashing the same glass, putting it down every time and then picking it up again, in a dramatic crescendo of the rhythm of her actions. The video accompanies Calcagno's most recent work, simply entitled Celeste, with a clear autobiographically reference. The installation and the photographic shots that document it clarify some important details of her artistic path: first among these, the performing urgency, the "not being able to do otherwise" which puts her own body into play. The references to the body art performances of the sixties and seventies, from Gina Pane to Marina Abramovich, are evident just as the absence of any narcissistic drive towards exhibitionism is also obvious. Instead, the artist's physicality, which is compared with female physiological cyclicality, is subjected to a process of transfer from the liberating function through which the deep visceral states are clarified in observations just as is the case in a psychoanalytical path. The self-referencing gaze of the auto-shutter is the preferred point of view for triggering this sublimation mechanism, well represented by the delicate stylistic elements of the final image, but forgetful of the teachings of Francesca Woodman. In a constant exaltation of the dichotomy between "beauty and pain, carnality and soul, blood and thought" (Pluchino) the borderlines between being and non-being dissolve, the presence and the absence cohabit without any apparent contradictions. A dialectic of opposites permeated by the conviction that, while nothingness devours the flesh, only the demand for a powerful and living femininity (the blood stains are evidence of it) can save the artist from the wearying action of passing time. A Momonster life by Alessandro Benetti «M omonsters are creatures that allow you to go back in time and allow you to return to your childhood. They are a spin of the merry-go-round, without the fear.» This is how Giovanni Motta describes the characters with a vaguely anthropomorphic appearance that are the indisputable protagonists of his artistic research. His Momonsters constitute the material output of a complex reflection centred on the theme of childhood, of the link with his own memory and of self-awareness. The relationship with the sphere of childhood is a constant in the work of the Veronese artist who declares that he finds his main source of inspiration in a passion that he has cultivated since he was small, the one for Japanese manga comics. The reference is not just conceptual but, on the contrary, contributes concretely to defining the extremes of a decisively pop aesthetic. Motta recalls that when he looked at the black and white cartoons of the time when he was still a boy he amused himself by imagining their colours and then used these for his first redrawings. Over time, he ended up creating as real palette with bright colours that Motta recovered as a point of departure for his research into the Momonsters. Their story began one summer afternoon by the seaside: when he returned home, Motta found two Plasticine sculptures modelled by his children, Massimiliano and Ottaviano. Profoundly struck by the highly imaginative charge that they released, he decided to crystallize their barely drafted forms in the first two Momonsters: Blue Julian and Red Atomic. Precursors of a very numerous race, they sprang from a conscious decision by Motta to put the rationalism and the technical skills of his adult ego at the service of the creative fantasy of his sons, almost in an act of identification between his offspring and the child that was. Starting from that moment, countless variants of these enigmatic "monsters" with their bright colours populate the canvasses and sculptures of their common creator. Depending on their dimensions, the Momonsters can be made of carbon fibre, layers of sanded resin, or ceramic, this last material being one that best explains the tension between the artist's dexterity and the work's three-dimensionalism. Production takes place in a strictly artisan manner, with a significant amount of teamwork directed on the development of the most appropriate technical and technological solutions for achieving the desired formal result. Leaving the workshop in which they were born, the Momonsters animate a great number of collective and personal shows dedicated to Motta's work. These include the recent exhibitions in Como on the theme of Natura Ludens, which once again highlights the most strictly ludic aspect in the measure of the child. Aside from this component, with its quite immediate reading, when examined more carefully the Momonsters reveal a much more articulated "personality" which is nothing other than the three-dimensional transposition of the themes tackled by Motta: first among them that of memory. «The Momonsters have a dark side. You can read it from their expression», which is an empty gaze and often veiled with sadness. This is true for the Momonsters sculptures but also the two-dimensional representations: created using the most varies techniques (pencil, charcoal and acrylic colours) they are permeated by an atmosphere 14 of decay as if they were difficult visions to put into focus as they are banished to a past sphere, that of the recollection of an infancy that exists no longer but which has not been completely lost. In this sense, Motta declares that he will «always» continue his research into the Momonsters. A long path for the identification of his roots will increasingly define the contours of the images that are now out of focus, in a backwards path which does not counter the natural progress of time, but enriches it with retrospective intensity. The process is much more important than the finished product because it is in the process that the most profitable component of the research into his own ego is concentrated. The smooth and highly polished materiality of the Momonsters must not therefore deceive («I love them to be perfect»). The formal lack of definition that characterizes them makes them incomplete in every sense, almost as if it were a case of crystallization of the artist's different work stages on the material and on himself. Making art is a «therapy» and specifically for this reason «the final moment (author's note: in the creation of the work) is the saddest one, not the most beautiful»: Motta separates himself from the creature of his imagination to which he will always be linked by a relationship and great affection and opens a new chapter of introspection, always with unexpected results. nell’altra pagina | on the other page Enrico The Amateurs Duel 2013 Resina stratificata, acrilico, metallo | Stratified resin, acrylic, metal altezza | height cm. 10 Marc The forgotten Trap 2013 Resina stratificata, acrilico, metallo | Stratified resin, acrylic, metal altezza | height cm. 10 The Unforgotten Ingenious Afternoon 2013 Resina stratificata, acrilico, metallo | Stratified resin, acrylic, metal altezza | height cm. 10 in questa pagina | on this page Dreaming Crossed Simplicity 2013 Acrilico su tela | Acrylic on canvas cm. 140x110 Giovanni Motta lives and works in Parona (VR) www.giovannimotta.it 15 NINA NASILLI Questo insistente andare verso il centro dell’Esperienza … di Massimo Scrignòli P ittrice e poetessa, irrequieta enfant-prodige della nostra poesia contemporanea (aveva sette anni quando le sue prime liriche furono notate dalla Società Dante Alighieri, che ne patrocinò la divulgazione), Nina Nasilli è un’artista completa nella cui opera il tratto eloquente è sempre contrassegnato da un fascinoso dialogo tra linea, colore, pensiero e parola poetante. 11/10/2013 - 10/11/2013 Mostra personale 2N.EST Galleria Civica Cavour Padova 16 Nina Nasilli vive e lavora a Padova www.ninanasilli.it 17 NINA NASILLI This insistent pressing towards the centre of Experience ... by Massimo Scrignòli A Preparazione 2013 Tecnica mista su tavola | Mixed media on wood cm. 130x220 18 painter and poet, restless enfant-prodige of our contemporary poetry (she was seven years old when her first verses were noted by the Società Dante Alighieri which sponsored their publication), Nina Nasilli is a complete artist in whose works the eloquent sign is always marked by a fascinating dialogue between line, colour, thought and the poetizing word. In the nineties, when her restlessness was translated into expressive urgency, she began to refine her research around the "sign". Crucial for her was her meeting in '96 with Ottiero Ottieri, one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century with whom she maintained an intense human and intellectual relationship. At the time of his death, in 2002, after a period of busy silence, Nasilli reproposed herself both as a poet and as a painter: she staged two important personals, “UrgentSigns” and “Teasing imperfections”, with shows in various Italian cities and European capitals and, in 2008, in the United States. During those years the nucleus of the subjects of her works was inserted into a figurative context enveloped by vivid colour in an expressionist mould: prevalently female faces, suspended and amazed in their interior torment, eyes that are pensive or in movement, mute cries awaiting answers or at least a conspiratorial whisper from the spirit. This long and fecund period culminated with the publication of the art book So che sei bella, anima mia! and poetry collections (Imperfezioni moleste. E oltre; Tra.-dis-co, dedicated to Ottieri; Parabola d’amore), up until an important one-woman show organized in 2008 by the Commune of Ferrara in “Casa Ariosto”. Invited by the Department of Culture of Padua, Nasilli began exhibiting again in the prestigious Galleria Cavour, an institutional venue in the heart of the city in which the artist has lived for years. This is a space of over 400 sq.m in which, for her, the exhibitive event becomes the realization of a new pictorial cycle that marks a decisive turning point along her path. They are works of rare visual power in which the artistic and poetic values admirably wed the form of the colour and the action of the thought. The reds, the blacks and the blue; numbers and words scattered as clues and fruits of life, go on to make up a sentimental mosaic in which reason and emotion live enamoured of their own existences. Everything is crossed by rooted symbols of man that reject Ascolta, nominandole, le tortore 2013 Pastelli ad acqua su carta | Water-soluble pastels cm. 100x70 Natale 2012 Pastelli ad acqua su carta | Water-soluble pastels cm. 70x100 19 representation in order to become instead the presentation to the world of the mirror of itself. The exhibition (11 October – 10 November 2013) is entitled 2N.EST, and is already an enigma (nest in the English sense?, or the existence, est, of N.N. in the interior of the world? this and much more too ...). Protected and supported by iron grills and intercepted supports from building sites, we can find papers (including small format ones), a large 8 sq.m canvas and generously sized panels. Following an artistic path without echoes or resemblances, the works are from time to time destinations, anchors, landing places: of thought and passions. An encrypted path that captures our attention, astonishes, caresses and scratches the soul. And forces us to reflect as we do after an earthquake. But at the same time she arouses spells cradled by vital breaths which reach us from other dimensions. The original figurative stroke of faces and bodies has been gradually deformalized, to the point of establishing a harmonious intrigue on contrasts in which, in a natural manner, the lyrical word also has a founding role (verses for extraordinary twentiethcentury poets actually open and close the show's journeys). And when the figure appears more extensively veiled, we can sense the morphology of the soul right there where the eye encounters a borderline: the landscape is both emotive and conceptual, inspired and interrogative at the same moment. In this way, amid constructions of debris, refined poetic allusions, chromatic and numerical references, quotations and symbolisms from the classical world, excavations in the archaeology of a timeless myth, Nina constructs an itinerary which in the cyclicality of Alpha and of Omega does in fact find the conjunction of start and end, but at the same time it regenerates it continuously in complete profiles of incomplete figures and lands without geographies, towards an inexhaustible penetration into the centre of Experience. The gestural equilibrium, the urgency of the expression and the custody of the technique are harmoniously combined in a supervised voyage to the proximity of feeling, the crashing of the world through the murmuring of a rose petal or a feather in a nest. A path as complex as it is fascinating that orients the knowledge of the heart and the mind's gaze towards the disclosure of awareness. (Homi, Bhabha, The Location of Culture, London and New York: Routledge, 1994, p. 50). Dalla serie | From the series Disturbate divinità 2010 PIERANTONIO TANZOLA Homo Faber of other days by Marco Fazzini I t would not be so strange if we were at the height of classicism: meeting an artist and knowing that he also possesses talents in the musical field, or being able to question him on aesthetic matters, or as an avid reader of poetry, or frequenting him as a complete intellectual. Even then these were exceptional prerogatives but they were not unforeseeable in a period in which the arts had not undertaken individual paths, foreshadowing modernity. Today, faced with an unattainable technological specialism, art is able to propose a singular if nebulous grey area in which the works and criticism are driven by "other" mechanisms, inclined towards the sole desire to discover a surprise, innovation at all costs, mistaking this for excellence. If it is true that the ego is sovereign in a great many of the protagonists of the contemporary ephemeral, too busy talking about themselves as neo-Renaissance innovators to be able even for a moment to understand and listen to what is around them, it is not surprising that these are the first to remain indifferent to the background noise of the universe and to the laws of the cosmos, with all its languages, its mechanisms and its messages. Finding an artist who, like Pierantonio Tanzola, knows how to smile at the seriousness of those who take themselves too seriously while they are straddling individualism (or even worse, exhibitionism, or the market) is so rare; rarer still is finding someone who knows how to offer himself "humbly" as an artist and also play the role of musician, photographer, reader and critic, 24 Dalla serie | From the series Omissis 2006 Olio, grafite e pastelli su tavola | Oil, graphite and pastel on canvas cm. 40x15 Apparizione del ceppo 2005 Olio, grafite e pastelli su tavola | Oil, graphite and pastel on canvas cm. 75x150 Foto b\n virata e solarizzata | Toned b\n photograph cm. 60x80 putting back into play that classicism that entails the skill of a fully finished homo faber or inestimable maker, forcing us to revolutionize the parameters we use to label and catalogue the world. This work of subtraction of the ego, that this artist practices with success, recalls the coveted search for the haecceity of philosophers and poets. Pierantonio Tanzola aspires exactly towards some of his works: become only a means through which nature portrays itself and puts its otherness into play. Here we can draw on the words of the philosopher Thomas Nagel who, when studying the gradual shift from a personal view of the reality of the world to an increasingly objective (and not human) perception, arrived at the conviction that the final aim of this process is the consideration of the world as an entity without a centre and the observer only as one of its possible contents. (Thomas Nagel, Mortal Questions, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1979, p. 206). The metaphor is clear. Let us imagine for a moment that humanity has lost, or never had the ability to perceive in accordance with the absolutes we have got used to: what would we say if its interpretation/representation of reality had always been a fallacious parameter? These days, only a sensitive and prophetic artist can make himself the bearer of a message that is so great as to be a real warning addressed to his admirers/observers, a cold and honest reading of the contemporary: the earth is imaged without anything of human, a place in which history has to be remade, where by now scopes and destinations have disappeared and nature puts itself onto the stage on its own. Tanzola himself says: "A new reality, a new vision, a return to the wood and not an end of the world, but a beginning, an alternative, an ultra-where." Here, then, are his procedures/results: photos obtained with photographic paper which is covered by piles of dry leaves during the night, left exposed for about two weeks to the weather so that nature can Dalla serie | From the series Buchi neri 2005-2012 Foto b\n colorata e virata a mano | Coloured b\n photograph, toned by hand cm. 60x60 25 creates its own self-portraits, or a xylographic plate, worked and engraved which will never be printed but which will remain eternally as an original work; or the work Inni alla notte which is an attempt to create images that represent the spectres of the real, trees not the way they can appear to us in the darkness of the night, but as veritable apparitions, an animist representation of the world, an occasion for us to march towards an "ultrawhere", a place in which we will be able to encounter ourselves as we "really" are. The question of identification, Homi Bhabha has observed, "the very question of identification only emerges in-between disavowal and designation. It is performed in the agnostic struggle between the epistemological, visual demand for a knowledge of the Other, and its representation in the act of articulation and enunciation". Homi Bhabha, The Location of Culture, p. 50 (Homi, Bhabha, The Location of Culture, London and New York: Routledge, 1994, p. 50). Pierantonio Tanzola's continuous rebound from the means and materials of classical art to the betrayal of these means places him at the centre of a space-threshold which is abyss, vertigo but also dialogue, mediation, creation, an interstice where the ego purifies itself and, losing itself, declares out load that the world exists, despite all, and despite mankind. There is an example in the melancholic and bashful Valentine (2012), dressed in tufts and lace made of layers of tissue paper and packaging tape, which mask her layer after layer and declare her insecurities. This is a close-up portrait of a young woman languidly supported by an unclearly defined background , the symmetrical harmony of the parts of whose face, however, is interrupted in an almost disquieting manner by the disappearance of one eye behind a piece of tape as if she wants to look at the world and at herself at the same time. Sonia Ceccotti sets her characters on the scene by completing a journey of discovery of herself but she never reveals the results: very often, in fact, the eyes of the protagonists of her compositions are barred by strips of adhesive tape, almost as if to protect what she has discovered from the viewer. A little like the empty eyes in Modigliani's portraits which she leaves undefined and without pupils when she does not know, or does not want to know, whose soul they represent. The aesthetics within the recycle by Martina Gecchelin S onia Ceccotti's art softens the boundaries between interior reality and exterior representation. Hers is a investigative perspective centred on the human body as the starting point for a process of knowledge of oneself which, passing through feelings and humours, plumbs the depths of the psyche. The women protagonists of her drawings reveal a corporeity exhibited, investigated and displayed intermittently, or hidden and, at times, even cancelled. A discontinuity in the realistic representation of the anatomical parts that reflects the tension between being and appearing, a mirror of an intellectual path that is intended to reveal that which usually struggles to remain hidden, that cannot be said and which ought not to be discussed. Sonia Ceccotti work is a constant investigation of certain details of the face and of the language of the body which, with its attitudes and its daily poses, reveal those subtle layers of sensations and emotive tensions that are normally fleeting and unstable, in order to capture and exalt them in the characters in her works also thanks to skilful spatial constructions in which, as the backgrounds, she prefers the most banal corners inside a dwelling, anonymous or undefined places that do not allow the observer's gaze to be distracted away from the depicted subject, the real fulcrum of the picture. As happens in La sposa III (2012) in which the elegant and superb figure is firmly fixed in the focal centre of the drawing and captivates the viewer with the hypnotic expression of the face which, in a curious consonance, recalls the pride of Igea, the protagonist of the Medicine panel that Klimt created for Vienna University. In her most recent phase, her ceaseless need for experimentation has led Sonia Ceccotti to expand the horizons of an investigation which goes beyond the pictorial aspect and she also integrates the choice of the support which best meets the needs of her poetics into her research. As a result the artist decides to use materials for her works drawn from everyday life, in particular corrugated packaging cardboard, adhesive parcel tape, insulating tape and bar codes while abandoning tendentially traditional delicate oil for charcoal drawing on corrugated cardboard. This combination marries the fragility of the human condition with ephemeral, transitory materials, rejected and poetically simple, but rich in the same imperfections that man seeks to conceal. As we can see in Soave (2010), the strips of tape take the place of the brushstroke and the dry and repetitive mark of the charcoal restores all the effort that the female figure makes as she emerges from the wrinkles of the cardboard, forced into a form thickened by the continuous superimpositions of a braked, broken mark that is interrupted by the roughness of the support that never lets it run fluidly over the surface. The artist puts in place a sort of modern Goddess characterized by a sensual nudity and by a dreamy smile lost faraway, elsewhere, but at the same time master of the scene and of the emotions that seeing her arouses in the observer. This is also because Ceccotti skilfully plays on the ambiguity of a randomness piloted by the insertion of the different materials so that some anatomical parts are literally deleted by "material short-circuits" as if, by going beyond technique, she wants to protect the fragility and delicacy of the subject. 30 Valentine 2012 Carboncino, acrilico, carta velina e nastro adesivo su cartone Charcoal, acrylic, tissue paper and tape on corrugated cardboard cm. 120x160 Soave 2010 Carboncino, scotch, codici a barre su cartone ondulino Charcoal, scotch, barcode on corrugated cardboard cm. 120x160 La sposa III 2012 Carboncino acrilico e nastro adesivo su cartone ondulinoCharcoal, Charcoal and acrylic adhesive tape on corrugated cardboard cm. 60x60 L'incanto 2012 Tecnica mista su cartone ondulino | Mixed media on corrugated cardboard cm. 168x240 Spazio Anna Breda Via Monaco Padovano, 12 - Padova TEL + 39 049 8774401 / 329 2312572 [email protected] www.spazioannabreda.com 31 GIAMPIETRO CAVEDON Respirare rarefatti ricordi sembrano uscire da un ricordo lontano. Le stanze stesse respirano a loro volta l'artista e forse per questo motivo Giampietro Cavedon vive e lavora a Marano Vicentino (VI) [email protected] 33 Fabbrica abbandonata 2013 Olio su tela | Oil on canvas cm. 90x90 GIAMPIETRO CAVEDON Breathing rarefied recollections by Silvia Neri G iampietro Cavedon's poetic is a delicate rarefied representation of the quotidian: at times is appears to be veiled by a light melancholy which escapes from memory, other times delineated by the suffused light like something intimate spied from the outside. The Vicenza artist prefers the depiction of ordered and organized domestic interiors that seem to reveal themselves to the observer as splendid places that recount the life of others but above all the very life of the home. Painting linked to place and time, to space and its rhythm, to its history and memory. Time inexorably beats out the change carried out in the transformation and alteration of the places, silent protagonists of stories that are subject to events: or they are subject to and at the same time participate in the lives of the people that inhabit them and give life at the same time. A reciprocal exchange of lives and lived-in places, interpreted by the veiled eye of the observer. Cavedon offers viewers of his paintings the possibility of entering into these houses and being able to live in these rooms with him. The artist introduces his public to the interior of a forgotten universe which he wants to make live again: the accurate pictorial description of everyday objects in disuse is the tool for bringing them back to the observer's attention. Thanks to the Vicenza artist's accurate depictions it is possible to revisit the lives of the people of the house: the mirror, the sideboard and the desk denote a family environment in which the imagination works to reconstruct the details, such as sheets of paper on which a message is written, a reflected face of a jacket on a coat stand. We are present in those empty rooms and ask ourselves who inhabited them, who lived in them. When we look at Cavedon's paintings we get the feeling of a hidden presence, one that has been mislead, vanished or lost in time: just like when you enter a room and feel a draft of air that cools and look for the window but cannot Interni 2013 Olio su tela | Oil on canvas cm. 70x70 find it, so the artist's paintings inhale the air of the rooms and return its breath. We realize that Cavedon's rooms are expressed through the furnishings and objects that make them up, airy and light, vital and cheerful but, above all, lived in. Inhabited by the gaze of those who observe them and rendered alive by the presence of figures who participate silently in the composition of the picture and who seem to reflect on intimate considerations. The artist paints in loco and with a rapid hand guided by instinct he elaborates the image and brings it onto the canvas. His gesture impresses the sensations experienced in the moment. Cavedon manages to be an internal and external element at the same time: his point of view has the living sentiment of those who are present and at the same time manages to render objective the sensations they experience. He looks at the room, breathes it is, lives it and recounts it. The rooms themselves breathe the artist and it is perhaps for this reason that they seem to come out of a distant memory. Just like when you pull a curtain and through a Periferia 2013 pane you see a memory that does not belong to you against the Olio su tela | Oil on canvas light, a place of our own but now distant. cm. 100x150 Giampietro Cavedon is a painter who needs broad spaces in which to place objects in disuse and give new life to them, bring them back into favour through the use of light which, rarefied, donates an out-of-focus and ancient effect. In this way he becomes a sort of voyeur of places that were once inhabited and are now empty, naked bodies that reveal themselves without shame. A sentiment of presence can be inhaled in these rooms, a presence that does not arouse fear or dread but plays on suggestion and suspense. There is nothing supernatural, only a contemplative absence/presence. Giampietro Cavedon is an artist who manages to elaborate a particular pictorial effect by means of a very common oil technique: like through a delicate veil the painter is able to render the idea of an impalpable homogeneous cloth that alters perception and delineates a conscious detachment between those who observe and who is observed. As it is specifically the rare figures that appear in his works that consolidate the idea of a living presence in these rooms: with their quiet and contemplative dialogues they render the space around them vital and despite a veiled nostalgia they are able to perform the miracle of making the place relive. Perhaps the Vicenza artist's pictorial intent is close to a thought of Gabriel Garzia Marquez: life is not what one has lived but what one remembers and how one remembers it. This, explains Neri Pozza chairman, Vittorio Mincato, is the spirit of the new Premio Nazionale di Letteratura Neri Pozza. It has been organized on the first centenary of the Vicenza publisher by the firm that bears his name in order to bring talent centre-stage. The competition is open to authors of any nationality who enter an unpublished work of fiction, written in Italian. Genre works such as thrillers, detective stories, fantasy or memoirs are not permitted. The best texts were chosen by a commission selected by Neri Pozza Editore: the twelve competing works were announced at the end of June and then assessed by a Reading Committee composed of the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, the literary agent Luigi Ber38 nabò, the journalist and writer Stefano Malatesta, the literary critic Silvio Perrella, the writer Sandra Petrignani, the editorial director Giuseppe Russo, and the literary agent, Marco Vigevani. The five finalists selected by the committee will be presented on 12 September in the Pal Zileri space in Milan. And the winner will be announced on 3 October in the setting of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza in Piazza Matteotti, designed by Andrea Palladio. Ideas of art and of poetry. "They will be ideas of art and poetry, the only one's capable of seducing and interesting me. For me the rest is darkness and vanity." These are specifically the words of the publisher, Neri Pozza, his obstinate faith in the artistic and poetic nature of publishing work, that express the spirit of the new National Literature Prize. "In a period of crisis such as this one," explains Manuela Miola, Marketing & Communications Director, Gruppo Forall Pal Zileri, the prize's main sponsor, "we wanted to point on the excellences of our country. For us, supporting a Prize whose purpose is to bring new literary talents to public attention means betting on quality above all." Based on the model of Spanish literary prizes, those organized by the publishing houses, the Premio Nazionale di Letteratura Neri Pozza starts from the premise that "the role of a literary prize is to highlight works that are worthy of being read and reviewed, that are capable of grasping the spirit of an age," as affirmed by Giuseppe Russo, originator of the Prize and editorial director of the Neri Pozza publishing house. Neri Pozza, the partisan with a nose for talent. But who really was Neri Pozza? Partisan, writer and publisher without a doubt: but also an artist and collector of contemporary art. And it is in fact to his passion for talent and his courage in knowing how to bet on the new, that the Premio Nazionale di Letteratura is dedicated. In the same way as Neri Pozza – who collaborated with the greatest post-war writers, such as Dino Buzzati, Eugenio Montale and Massimo Bontempelli – did not hesitate to publish the very young Goffredo Parise in 1951 or Carlo Emilio Gadda's Il primo libro delle favole, considered difficult by critics, this competition brings "nose" and the opening to new ideas back to the centre of publishing. "This courage to take a risk with novelty is also one of our values: the Italian men's clothing brand, Pal Zileri from Quinto Vicentino and famous all over the world, loves to bet on original ideas," Miola continues. "We decided to link with the name which, like our firm, has always had solid Italian roots, particularly in Vicenza, but which is also innovative and open to the world." The challenge. Unpublished works. Written in Italian by authors of any nationality. The challenge between new literary talents is open. The first screening, with the selection of the twelve best texts, was carried out by a commission selected by Neri Pozza Editore. The shortlist – announced at the end of June – was then assessed by the Reading Committee and the five selected finalists will be presented in the Pal Zileri space in Milan on 12 September. The winner will be announced on 3 October in the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. The author will receive a cheque of 25 thousand euros and the work will be published by Neri Pozza Editore. For some but not for all by Anna Livia Friel I t is the art multiple, with its accessible price, that comes to the rescue of mid-level collecting, particularly at times of economic crisis. Nevertheless the enduring appeal of this type of artistic object is not linked exclusively to its approachability in terms of cost. Perhaps we should clarify what we mean when we speak of "multiple": it is the reproduction of an art work that has already come into being with imprinted seriality. i.e., it is already envisaged at the prototype (or die) stage that it will be produced in several exemplars, either by an artisanal method, or using the typical procedures of industrial design and, in any case, in such a way that all the pieces are substantially identical to one another. The a priori conditions for reproducibility were already there in printing and in engraving right from their beginnings in fifteenthcentury Europe and quite earlier in the East. As with lithoprints or screen prints, multiples are usually numbered and signed, though today there are also unlimited series of multiples and these are obviously of lower commercial value for every individual piece. The multiple can be made without the artist's intervention or the presence of the author who, instead, almost always participates in the execution of the work in the case of chalcography and, indeed, there are many artists who print their own engravings and directly control the quality of every example in limited runs. In this sense, among the various forms or artistic reproductions, multiples come closest to industrial series. But this does not deprive them of an intrinsic value which is aesthetic above all but which is also due to the fact that it springs from the artist's originality. Many artists have in fact produced multiples by following an idea of their own and it is not rare for them to be the vehicles of a programme and of theoretical premises. The first artists to associate their name with the concept of multiples were the protagonists of Pop Art who, by adopting reproducibility as a characterizing element of their works, enhanced their "technical" origin in a poetic sense. In particular, Andy Warhol, mythical leader of the American movement, contributed to confirming the end of the artwork as a unique and unrepeatable work with his famous prints: icons that immortalized the faces of Marilyn Monroe, Mao Tse-Tung and Che Guevara repeated in sequence on large canvases with altered and vivacious colours; or advertising images of commercial brands such as Coca Arnold Mario Dall'O 2013 Stampa fotografica con acrilico e resina (copie n° 40) Photo Print with acrylic and resin (copies n ° 40) cm. 19x19 Cola bottles or tins of Campbell's tomato soup; or even striking photographs of road accidents or electric chairs which, emptied of their conventional meaning, assumed a new one through the serial repetition of the image itself. Other American pop artists produced series of multiples: from Tilson to Lichtenstein and Oldenburg and, among the Italians, Bruno Munari, founder of Arte Programmata, who in the sixties created multiples (including 10 exemplars of the first and only mobile from 1930), which were also linked together in a continuous structure. In reality, even a form of standardized art such as a multiple lends itself to a margin of personalization to various degrees as in the case of Munari's "linked multiples" or of some of Warhol's works in which the artist intervened on photographs and modified each individual image with brushstrokes with unique details so that every single work was different from the others and a bearer of the variety of its own different moods. The apparent dialectic between the uniqueness and seriality of the artistic objects can perhaps be resolved today; in a world in which art and industry are experienced as parallel paths that are not necessarily alternative or in conflict but rather converging in the work that reconciles invention and technicality, the need for a diffusion of art and of the personal, subjective and "privileged" pleasure of owning a beautiful object. In any case, like the society in which it develops, art today also lives as a function of the means of diffusion and mass communication and reflects their expressive procedures, while also denouncing the uncertainties of a system in continuous change in which multiplicity modifies traditional references in the history of art too. The art multiple concept, intended as the repeatability of a work in an unspecified number of copies, was in any case widely foreseen: by Walter Benjamin in far-off 1955, with the publication in Frankfurt of his essay Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit (The Work of Art in the Age of its Mechanical Reproduction), which confirmed the end of an elite art and the arrival of beauty "for some but not for all." Cerchio Akhisar 2008 Refrettario in parte smaltato | Partly enamelled refractory clay D. cm. 150 Lee Babel vive e lavora a Fara Vicentino (VI) 47 LEE BABEL Earths of Babel by Giovanna Grossato photo by Fabio Zonta "N omen omen" is a Latin saying that explains that a name is often a portent of a destiny. In reality, Lee Babel does not recall the sense of the ancient biblical understanding of Babel as the confusion of languages in the course of the construction of the mythical tower, the top of which was supposed to have touched the sky (Gen. 11, 1-9). As regards the construction of her ceramics – which are so markedly architectural, "towers" but also "houses", "doors", niches and nymphaea, fountains and wells, closed spaces determining "plazas" or ones that are open to the conjunction with the landscape, anthropomorphic or natural, the form that defines the language is, rather, rigorously unitary, Pentecostal, if we are allowed to have recourse to another Biblical adjective capable of metaphorically affirming the exact contrary of dispersion and semantic chaos. The concept of form in Lee Babel's art is then always directly linked to that of the material. And it is specifically the material, this ceramic that has the colour of desert sand but the tenacious and compact structure of rock, that plays a fundamental role in the expressive elaboration, engaging and simple at first glance but then capable of transforming itself robustly in a set of abstract or surreal elements, a space/time in which and from which one enters and exits through numerous attractively coloured doors or physically deceiving ladders and "Escheresque" paths that lead to nothing or returns to the starting point, after passages that are almost symbolic trips, between classic columns and unheard-of projections, Renaissance oeilsde-boeuf and Baroque simulations of corridors with no way out. Halfway between dolls and metaphysical labyrinths, Lee Babel's sculptures satisfy both a philosophical rule that conciliates both solids and vacuums, questions and answers, light and shadow in perfect harmony, even if never foreseeable (and as such always intensely creative), and the most unexpected oneiric oddities and the most extravagantly sudden constructive paradoxes. Work which, without exception, is supported by the extremely controlled discipline of artisan practice, from a profound technical knowledge of the behaviour that governs matter: its resistances, its reactions to the work of the hands, of water and of fire in different conditions and states. And, finally, the loving taming of the form through thought. The "poetics of rationality", as Giovanni Curatola defines it (2006). The art of composing archetypical structures drawn from very ancient construction principles with others created by nature in a harmonious and surprising manner. A child of two lands – she was born in 1940 in Heilbronn in Sweden but has lived mainly in Italy in Fara Vicentino (VI) since the seventies – Babel has drawn the spirit of place from both. After studying from 1957 to 1960 with the ceramist Walburga Kulz (who in turn was a student of Otto Lindig, a lecturer at the Bauhaus) and then in the Berlin Academy, in 1962 Lee opened her own workshop at Heilbronn. Already in 1967 she was invited to the II International Ceramic Symposium in Prague and was awarded commissions for the creation of large panels, fountains and stoves. A guest in 1978 at the III Ceramics Symposium at Nove, Bassano and Marostica, the following year she opened 48 Cerchio Selimunte 2008 Refrettario in parte smaltato | Partly enamelled refractory D. 150 Dolce campagna, antiche mura 2008 Ciclo di 6 composizioni circolari refrattario con gres smaltato Cycle of 6 circular compositions of refractory clay with glazed stoneware D. cm. 80x25 Una nascente 2007 Refrettario con gres smaltato | Refractory clay with glazed stoneware cm. 40x45 another workshop at Fara Vicentino (VI) in Italy, and began to collaborate with Alessio Tasca in the demanding restoration of the eighteenth-century "Antica Fabbrica di Cristallina e terra rossa" at Rivarotta, Bassano del Grappa. The experience, lasting ten years, was completed with the publication of a catalogue and Luigi Meneghello's address for the occasion was then included as a text in the book, Rivarotta, along with images of that memorable day and of the sculptures of Lee Babel and Alessio Tasca placed in the old restored workshop. Both the pottery of the Fabbrica di Cristallina, recovered and brought to light, and the works of the two ceramists were then the subject of an exhibition that transferred in 1990 to Kunstverein di Heilbronn in Germany. The book Lee Babel, ceramica per scultura, scultura per ceramica was published in 2006 to showcase fifty years of the artist's story. An important exhibition of her works along with those of Alessio and Vittore Tasca and of Heiner Bauer by title“... Nel Veneto i ceramisti …”, is being held at the Museo Nazionale Atestino ad Este (PD) from 7 September to 3 November. Over the years to the present, the exhibitions of her works, both in Italy and in Germany, and the appreciation of collectors have continued to confirm the solid value of Babel's activity with that specific characteristic of "constructing", the fundamental bau which is substance but also logos, the spiritual and theoretic attitude of work. Morgane Tschiember vive e lavora a Parigi. Young curators, artists and business people applied themselves to it and gave life to a cultural association with the desire to develop, strengthen and promote ceramics production through a link with contemporary art. The origin of the placename of the town of Nove, capital of the ceramics district, comes from the dialect term "nòve" (new) in reference to new lands where people settled around the XIV century. New, therefore, like the people who gave life to the project: young but already expert and professionally aware, engaged in the establishment of a network of creativity, skills and passionate desire for innovation who are capable of marrying traditional know-how with what art wants to communicate today. The plan proposes to study and implement the experience gained by the Commune of Nove with 15 editions of the Festa della Ceramica | Portoni Aperti and which last year (2012), in collaboration with the town's Ceramics Museum and with the active support of a world-famous Nove brand, saw the staging of the show Forward Archeologies | Archeologie del divenire of the American artist, Steven Montgomery: the works included Test Site (2006-2007), an installation consisting of an imposing sculptural body of seven ceramic elements in the setting of the eighteenth-century Pestasassi Baccin-Cecchetto-Stringa Mill, an extraordinary example of Italian industrial archaeology. Ceramic is therefore the absolute protagonist of the exhibitive event, the favourite material of Steven Montgomery whose works are centred on an imaginary post-apocalypse with the reproduction of elements of the industrial world such as screws and bolts Lorenzo Zanovello LEvaso 2009 Terraglia dolce, smalto lucido e opaco | Earthenware sweet, glossy and matte glaze cm. 45x30x30 Paolo Polloniato Metamorfosi paesaggistica 2011 Terraglia bianca | White earthenware cm. 55x93 in a poetic of ruin. Often in an evident state of decomposition and worn by time, the objects represented by Montgomery become the pretext for opening out towards a reflection on the social and intellectual decadence of our age. Taking up the concept of ceramic material used for producing a new kind of contemporary art with the Fèlure exhibition that was inaugurated on Sunday 15 September 2013, the NUOVE Residency Project establishes the first edition of the residency project for international artists conceived for the town of Nove. This springs from collaboration between local manufacturers, the Nove town council and the Ceramics Museum with a view to offering creativity an ideal place for experience and work so that the possibilities for diffusing and deepening this extraordinary medium can be expanded. The artists are provided with technical support by experts and professionals from the ceramics world in order to promote its historical value and traditional productive capacity. In short NUOVE offers an artistic residency to leading international artists who are interested in the knowledge, experimentation and creation of ceramic work and aims to reinforce the identity of its territory through the interaction with international artists. The workshop-residency was conceived in order to bring together the cultural identity of the place and contemporary international culture, as a branding tool, in an attempt to develop a stimulus for the production system and lead to a positive economic impact for local companies by means of the live wire of creativity. In short, new forms and new experiences for a new economy based on the development and promotion of Italian ceramics. Thanks to a period of residence in Nove lasting two or three months – variable according to needs – the artists will have an opportunity to work with some of the local potteries which will offer all the technical support for the realization of one or more ceramic works which will then be the subject of a show to complete the workshop. Nuove springs from the collaboration between the town of Nove, the Civic Ceramics Museum and various local companies involved in the production of ceramics and equipped with all the technical supplies for coroplastic production. The first guest is the Parisian artist Morgane Tschiember (Paris 1976). Her operative residency from 9 July to 31 August 2013 culminates in the show/open studio inaugurated on Saturday 14 September 2013, in concomitance with the traditional feast of local ceramics, and can be visited until 30 September 2013. Morgane Tschiember lives and works in Paris. Giuseppe Ciracì and Leonardo's machine. The six hundred drawings on a anatomical theme executed by Leonardo da Vinci and housed today by the Royal Library in Windsor Castle are the starting point for this project by Giuseppe Ciracì whose role as an interpreter of Leonardo's precious studies also includes the use of the pencil, a recognizable element of the artist but also dear to Leonardo himself. The collage realized by the patient hand of today's artist is superimposed in the selection of the works in show, dialoguing with the scholar of other times. The idea emerges of Leonardo's machine, intended as the totality of the elements that animate the human body, in the transparencies that make it is possible to glimpse the Windsor papers with the notes written back to front. Pieces of models living and fixed on the surface and documentary library elements are brought together in an original revisitation of the anatomy. The scientific analysis on the corpses of da Vinci's genius is joined by Ciracì's living humanity, and we allow him to perpetuate the uninterrupted dialogue between lovers of fine drawing which remains effective in the idealized Cinquecento faces and the contemporary expressions of everyday ones. An artistic investigation focussing on the word and on the book as oeuvre, he experiments new relationships and connections with the user. His activity is subdivided into 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works including books, installations, performances, videos and multiples, all having in common the use of verbal language as an essential means of visual communication. Minato's artistic path starts from an analysis of the evocative potential of the word in aphoristic form and of what is specific to the poetic language which requires little in order to constitute an inexhaustible source of suggestions and reflections. One of his preferred instruments in the artistic investigation is the book: consultable but only through contemplation: book-works that assume different guises and which are made using atypical procedures – there are some sealed with studs, rolled up ones and tarred ones in earthenware pots and biodegradable ones in soap. Minato is a hyperconceptual artist who is ironic more often than not and has always availed of performances as a direct tool involving the public. Minimal and pulsing, vibratile and impalpable truths of the light that filters through colours called upon to be something else: curtains of branches, mobile fronds traversed by foreign winds, darkness of the night not yet violated by artificial lights. Here the artist covers the instant without restraining it. He seduces it with recognition of the impossibility of going beyond. The relationship between the artist and the vision of nature is therefore something delicate and intimate, where humanity is an evanescent presence that is determined not in its own physicality but in the capacity to grasp the tracks that nature reveals. These are filtered lights and stellar flashes, portions of the infinite which draw man's finiteness from the glazings and tricklings, not beyond but within the boundaries of the work. Stefanini reveals the boundary and violates it. By juxtaposing Space and Time he does not allude to, but declares the threshold beyond which it is not possible to go. He makes it possible to get beyond it in a harmonious and virtual manner only thanks to a careful and reflective reading. "The moment for pausing has arrived," he declares. Like sacred and ancient books to whose compilation amanuenses dedicated painstaking and religious care, Gabriella Benedini's object-books are constructed by the artist using delicate and precious fragments of reality, capable of maintaining an intimate and sublimated connection with it. Right from the eighties, the artist's investigations have abandoned the pictorial language and shifted by preference towards sculpture. The results are Teatri della Melanconia, Pendoli del Tempo, Goniometri, Sestanti, and Costellazioni. Innere mitte - disegno in carboncino - cm. 200x150 Gino Alberti's work is dedicated to drawing. On the one hand he conceives large charcoal drawings, images of landscapes that do not reveal any human presence. In these works Alberti refers to the symbolic landscape painting of the XVI century in which nature had a metaphysical dimension and sought a reference in the transcendent. The use of words and phrases however repositions these idyllic landscapes in a contemporary context. In contrast with those symbolically charged views, he brings together fragments of everyday stories drawn on small-format sheets. Alberti makes use in some of these drawings of language codes typical of comic strips. On other sheets, texts and fragments of images mix in a single graphic representationm to create a visual language associated with the tradition of Street Art. For Gino Alberti, drawings are psychograms and very particular moments of his life. The images are aligned like thoughts and feelings in an associative manner, in a disordered form just as in real life. Drawing is a fast, fragile and instantaneous means that corresponds to Gino Alberti's need for a provisional form of art. The primary aim of Idea e Progetto – a design studio for private and public spaces – is the search for innovation, unique furnishings and the fusion of art and design. In its continuous quest Idea e Progetto encountered Daniele Boesso and was immediately struck by the creations of the Paduan artist of metals. His oeuvre denotes originality and culture, fruit of both technical and bibliographical research. While recalling images of medieval metalwork, the metal wardrobes are transformed into creations with an authentically contemporary flavour. Practical and refined without frills, they are embellished by jewel handles that are little works of art on their own, illuminated by enamels treated using the techniques of a master. The same techniques are also used for tiny multicolour objects: leaves, fish, birds and kites that are apparently suspended in the void inside rough wooden frames to form poetic partitions: the "Doors onto the horizon". This is just a little preview of the many works from Idea and Progetto that you can admire from October until the end of the year. An exhibition dedicated to this artist who loves the craftsmanship of another time projected into the future. Un ulteriore modo di porre in relazione, come l’intera mostra si prefigge, lo “sguardo” del viaggiatore e lo “spazio” del luogo ricordato Putwards and back souvenir de voyage The custom of buying souvenirs originated in the XVII century with the grand tour, the formative journey of European intellectuals and aristocrats. In the XX century, with the evolution of means of transport, travelling changed identity, and from something intended for the few to something which was within the reach of everyone: from personal experience, recounted through photographs, letters and diaries, the trip became a widely publicized collective experience. Today, souvenirs contribute in a conspicuous manner to nourishing our view of the "afar" and our "worldview". This show brings together the form of tourism that "discovers" and valorises exotic places to transform them often into icons of consumption, with "postmodern" tourism, characterized by an extreme fragmentation of signs, one which lives on non-places, unqualified spaces. In addition to the works of contemporary Italian artists inspired by this theme, the show also includes material from the Italian Touring Club, modern souvenirs and ones from the grand tour, models and statuettes that are at the origin of the souvenir and the documentary by Andrej Tarkovskij Tempo di viaggio (1983) in which the director travels through Italy guided by the poet Tonino Guerra. Another way of creating a relationship between the traveller's "gaze" and the "space" of the remembered place, which is the intention of the entire show. Glass from the Museo Salviati and Drawings by Mario Sironi At the beginning of this year, Signora Anna Tedeschi gave the Civic Museums of Padua 25 old glass works that are part of the collection of the Museo Salviati in Venice, as well as about a further one hundred for storage. The exhibition presents the cataloguing of this material, reflects Salviati production in the context of Venetian output between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and places the accent on the creation of glassware inspired by the contemporary world. On show among other things are glasses, bottles, practical objects, statuettes, ornaments. At the same time, Museo Eremitani is hosting a show dedicated to the great artist, Mario Sironi, who died at the beginning of the seventies. One of his heirs, Andrea Sironi Straußwald, gave the Musei Civici two drawings that Sironi produced on the occasion of a visit to the Scrovegni Chapel, inspired by some of Giotto's figures. On this occasion it is intended to tackle some aspects of his output from a new standpoint, thanks to the 30 drawings made available by the donor from a selection made from his own extremely rich fund. Today, several fine collections can be admired in Casa Cavova: Canova's own paintings (15 oils on canvas and 35 temperas of exceptional lightness and gentleness), the engravings (commissioned by Canova from various Bassanese and Roman artists in order to create a catalogue of the marble works and distribute it to the major buyers of statues), the drawings, several marbles, the work tools and some of the artist's clothes. Tourists can also admire some parts of the House that have been opened to the public recently after restoration which was carries out with joint European funding: the bedroom in which Antonio Canova was born and which contains the famous painting by Thomas Lawrence, the basement of the house (with the Cellar and utility rooms) and, above all, the Painting Studio in the "Torretta". Finally, in the kitchen rooms where everything has remained as it was in Canova's time, the body that manages the Museum has recently installed workshops for multimedia teaching and working clay, particularly for the young students who visit the Gipsoteca. Geological adventures of earth and water, of fire and wind, constitute the fulcrum of his research in which natural and artificial, poor and precious, elements of common sense and daring fantasies are combined. The "river" is the metaphor that best recounts his personal show, Stati Naturali, curated by Paola Marini, in which the different themes of Giorgio Vigna's work flow. His Veronese origins have always made him perceive the river and water as points of reference, capable of determining his orientation with a musical score dense in emotions and suggestions. In omaggio all’inventore, queste antesignane delle moderne biciclette vengono chiamate Michaudine. How was the bicycle born? The Nicolis Museum recounts the origins. The first two-wheeled vehicle, especially built for personal transport, was the Draisine in 1816. Created by the German Barone Von Drais, it is the closest object to our bicycles. Cyclists of the time obviously had their difficulties when you think that the Draisine, a single piece in wood, was totally without pedals. To advance it was necessary to straddle it like a true sportsman and move forward by kicking on the ground with your feet. To change direction you had to stop and shift the bizarre vehicle by hand! A quality leap occurred in 1861 when Michaux, a very talented Parisian coachbuilder, managed to obtain the propulsion of the two-wheeled vehicle by fitting pedals on the Draisine and connecting it directly to the driving shaft with cranks. In homage to the inventor, this forebear of the modern bicycle was called the Michaudine. Countless evolutions and improvements were then made to this vehicle such as, for example, the velocipede which was presented in 1865 and achieved great commercial success. From then on the evolution of the bicycle was unstoppable and the two-wheeler with pedals entered daily use; for many people it became an irreplaceable means of transport, for other an ageless passion and for others still an object of cult to which to dedicate infinite attentions. Her interest is directed towards minimum, involuntary gestures, to the effect of time and to the spontaneity of chance, with the construction of a language made up of signs, traces and revisitations through these elements. What emerges from her work is the attempt to find a balance between contrasting forces, between aggressiveness and delicacy, between rationalism and the unconscious, with the assignment to action itself of the task of revealing this drive. Her attention is directed to the material rather than the world of ideas, to the emotionality underlying things, to "that which the material suggests", as if it were necessary to take repossession of things themselves in order to understand the world, manipulating them, displacing them and transforming them. By means of a synthetic and heterogeneous modus operandi she gives life to forms that seem to allude to a suspended time in which the gaze is called softly to listen to other senses. Museo Storico Pietro di Brazzà Savorgnan - Museo Artistico Štěpán Zavřel - Project:'Venice: Hope of Town'. The Centro Internazionale di Studi per la Cultura dell’Infanzia ‘Štěpan Zavřel’ in Spazio Brazzà creates and promotes projects at international level, in collaboration with various bodies and institutions, with a particular focus on illustrated books and other forms of art aimed at children. The art project 'Venice: Hope of Town' will be held in Kiev on 11 and 12 October next and springs from collaboration with the Structural Subdivision of the German-Polish-Ukrainian Society and the Centre for Children in Need 'Our Kids' of Kiev, engaged in the realization of projects for the sociocultural inclusion of children who have been the victims of social privation. It consists of a theatrical performance with over 50 children, based on the book, 'A dream in Venice' written and illustrated by Štěpan Zavřel. The show is directed by the German producer/director Volker Schlöndorff, Oscar for the best foreign film and Palme d'or at Cannes for The tin drum (1979) and with the choreography of the eclectic Belgian master, Marc Bogaerts. The project is conducted by international artists with the support of teachers and psychologists who, by means of a special educational program, will help children with problems to express themselves and discover their own talent through art, music, dance, theatre, circus, drawing and painting. Erected by the noble Foscarini family which commissioned illustrious architects and decorators to do the work, it consists of the main villa and the guest quarters surrounded by a suggestive park. The main Villa, reworked during the nineteenth century by the architect, Giuseppe Jappelli, now hosts the Rossimoda Footwear Museum, exhibiting over 1700 models of deluxe female footwear produced by the companies in more than sixty years in business, fruit of its collaborations with the most important stylists in the international fashion panorama, The Foresteria, created as a building for hosting guests, consists of a large central body at the sides of which are two large wings, joined by a portico decorated in the style of Sansovino with a large mansard. The central hall, used for parties, was richly decorated in 1652 by the Brescia artist, Domenico De Bruni, with a skilful play of perspectives, while the Venetian Pietro Libero was commissioned to depict the allegorical scenes on the walls and the triumph of the virtues of the noble Venetian family on the ceiling. This has is what happened with the portrait of Bianca Sforza attributed to Leonardo (and almost certainly his). Subjected to rigorous testing by renowned scholars and following scientific examinations that revealed the presence of a fingerprint that is compatible with other known ones of Leonardo, the drawing obtained its definitive endorsement from a comparison with the incunabulum from which it had been torn. The proof has become the subject of an essay by Peter Silverman and Catherine Whitney published in France in spring 2012: La princesse perdue de Léonard de Vinci. The codex, one of four known copies of Giovanni Simonetta's Sforziad, that of the Zamoyski Library in Warsaw, printed in Milan and requisitioned by the French during the sack in 1499, ended up in the royal collections of the Castle of Blois and in 1518 Francis I of France donated it for the marriage of Bona Sforza with Sigismund I of Poland. The Polish exemplar is the only one with an illuminated frontispiece and is dated 1496, specifically celebrating Bianca. Quite plausible therefore is the identification of the portrait with the "beautiful Sforza princess" (1482-1496), the firstborn and illegitimate – later legitimized – daughter of Ludovico il Moro, the fourteenyear-old bride of Galeazzo Sanseverino, captain of Ludovico il Moro's armies, who died on the same year that she was married. Despite its pedigree, this work was not part of the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan, in 2011 in the National Gallery, and also rejected that same year by the Morgan Library in New York… Giulio Stagni. On the occasion of the 20th International Convention, “L’Uomo planetario”, the “Ernesto Balducci” cultural hospitality and promotion centre worked in synergy with the Liceo Artistico Sello and the involvement of graphics class 5F for the creation of an image-symbol for the convention held in September 2012. The experience, which gained from a series of encounters and a visit to the Centro Balducci in Zugliano, allowed students to grasp values and aspects of the "Planetary Man" concept. These ideas were then translated into a series of graphic projects that interpreted the theme of the convention. This is one of the many collaborations that the Sello Institute had undertaken with bodies and associations at local, national and European level. Year after year right from its establishment, the school has been able to create thrills, trigger reflections and debates and motivate research into the beautiful and the useful through teaching paths inside the different specializations. On several occasions during the scholastic year the communicative works produced by the students move beyond the school walls to stimulate exchanges of ideas with the public on themes of a social nature and of public utility. The prize-giving ceremony for the competition "The school promotes fiscal legality" – a truly important theme for the transmission of values to young people – was held in the Auditorium of the Regional Government in Udine on 04 March 2013 last. 450 students from 32 schools in Friuli Venezia Giulia took part in the competition and were required to produce a comic to describe the significance of the concept of "fiscal legality" and the consequent social impact of such conduct. The objective was to make young people reflect on the important role that derives from the fulfilment of their obligations by taxpayers. Respecting the payment of taxes and therefore supporting the public purse makes it possible to provide the best services in the cultural, welfare, health and town-planning frameworks. The Students of the "Nordio" Institute took part with great enthusiasm by making comics with storyboards in order to communicate the theme of the competition. The first prize was won by Valeria KASYANOVA (high school triennium section, paper format, €5,000.00 prize), tutor Prof. Luigi Leaci, while the second prize was awarded to Denis DRAZETIC and Nemanja CVETKOVIC (high school biennium section, paper format, €4,000.00 prize), Prof. Giulio Stagni. A project for the recovery of the Institute's historical memory will be one of the characteristic activities of the “Max Fabiani” artistic high school in Gorizia starting from autumn 2013. The «Casa del Balilla» building in Gorizia which is the school's seat today, built between 1928 and 1930 by the architect, Umberto Cuzzi, is a work of particular significance in the national panorama of Modernism, and constitutes ones of the most important works of the new architecture for the entire city. Specifically because of its importance, this project will soon be initiated under the guidance of the architect, Paolo Bressan, teacher of the Art of Modelling and Stage Setting in the Architecture and Environment specialization. This project, which will see the «G. D’Annunzio» Secondary State Institute of Gorizia collaborate with the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICA) of Udine University, and will be headed by the engineer, Anna Frangipane, a DICA researcher and lecturer in the Building Conservation and Recovery course in the Civil Engineering degree. The work will take the form of a path for the recovery of the historical memory imbued with an exchange of knowledge and experience with a view to opening out to the town and, above all, with the full involvement of students, teachers and researchers. Growth that involves both the students (path towards progressive maturity) and the school (path towards progressive improvement) in a sort of virtuous circle developed along three axes. GROWING THROUGH OUR SURROUNDINGS. The school and the cultural and economic context collaborate in the development of the attitudes of the students who are experiencing increasingly wide-ranging and changeable scenarios. GROWING BY COMMITTING AND HELPING OURSELVES AND LIVING SCHOOL LIFE POSITIVELY. The school promotes scholastic wellbeing, favours formative success, is attentive to the students' creativity, to their pleasure in being together, and to the satisfaction of a finished product. GROWING AND IMPROVING. The school feels the need to open itself to teaching innovation by integrating the concept of the closed classroom with open workshops and classes and with the consolidation of modular teaching and multimedia by launching selfassessment procedures. Giuliana Corbatto The alternation of school and work (established by Act no. 53/2003 and by D.L. 77 of 15/04/2005) is a learning procedure whose fundamental objective is to create a connection for students between the scholastic experience and the employment world, also with a view to enhancing their personal vocations. The fundamental nucleus of the School-Work Alternation Project proposed this year is an investigation of the methodological aspects of planning applied to design. The theme of the project is: "Contemporary jewels between Nature and Fantasy". The experience was configured as an important opportunity for project experimentation and was carried out with Maria Grazia Rosin, an artist in the glass design sector. It was then possible to create a real contact with the employment world through direct work in the field. The workshop experiences were carried out both at school and in the workshop of a master glassmaker in Murano. A series of glass and wood jewels are currently being made and will be the subject of an exhibition envisaged for December 2013 at Cortina d'Ampezzo. Project tutor: Arch. The Liceo Artistico in Castelmassa was awarded the first prize for the best work in the thirteenth edition of the national secondary school competition, “I giovani e l’Arte” ("Young people and Art"). The jury of the event decided to give the prize to the short film, “Pinocchio e il Diritto Capovolto”, made by the school's students under the direction of teachers, Lara Verzola – Letters, Silvia Fogagnolo – Graphic-Pictorial Disciplines, and Silvana Silvestri – Plastic-sculptural Disciplines. The presentation of the work and the prize-giving occurred on Monday 8 May at the Gran Teatro Geox in Padua in the framework of the international Stage-Meeting: "Peace: Rights of Man and Citizenship". The work was presented in the form of a short film: every frame of the video is the fruit above all of careful drawings made by the students in the school's art studios. But the subject was also studied in depth with acute reflections from the students on the theme of law and visual education. What emerged was a work rich in fantasy and content which, accompanied by a sound track of songs by Edoardo Bennato, looked in the steps of the stringless puppet at the Pinocchio from the viewpoint of rights denies. Tre i personaggi in scena, spazio rigorosamente bianco, immagini proiettate sui kimono e sulle pareti. The “PIETRO SELVATICO” artistic high school has always maintained contacts with the world of art, design and work, with the inclusion of experiences promoted by the same into its teaching. Participation in competitions is a quite widespread activity and good results were achieved this year too. Worthy of note among others are participation and the results obtained by several students in the JEWELLERY DESIGN speciality in the 4th Sant’Eligio Competition of Italian jewellery schools, held on 26 May 2013 in Valenza. As regards the artefact section, the first prize was awarded to Claudia Zampieron for the projects section, and the 3rd prize to Giovanni Zoli. According to the jury "the interpretation of gold wire for creating jewels inspired by the needs of fashion and of the market, but also capable of reinterpreting the stylistic elements of the history of the jewel and of contemporary research in the design field, confirms the great professionalism and seriousness of the teachers." Once again, the workshops and subjects "in the experimentation of the design culture and of creativity" provided proof of their validity. Liceo Artistico “Pietro Selvatico” Largo Meneghetti, 1 35131 Padova Tel. +39 049 8751084 – 049 8758900 [email protected] www.liceoartisticoselvatico.gov.it 64 In order to speak effectively using today's language of images it is necessary to put skills from different ambits and disciplines into play. A contemporary image is a multimedia one not because it uses electronics, but because it is formed using components from different languages. The "Modigliani" pursues this idea of school, aiming to construct compositional and cultural skills that can allow students to range between different ambits while learning how to marry and combine them to create images suitable for specific functions. It is from this viewpoint that it is possible to read our school's participation at the 4th International Kids Carnival in the Central Pavilion of the Gardens of the Venice Biennale, with an installation-performance entitled Fusumaction, that springs from a study of the kimono and of the Imperial Palace of Katsura, and draws inspiration from the Fusuma, wall-screens that allow the rooms to open out onto the natural world and become extensions of the interiors and frames around the landscape. Among the characters on stage, a rigorously white space, are images projected on the kimonos and walls. This work required the students and teachers to put transversal skills into play, with the combination of image, planning and expressiveness. Eight years after being named after BRUNO MUNARI (1907-1998), the State Art Institute of Vittorio Veneto recalls the artist while dedicating a neon work to him, made and donated by Neon Lauro company of San Vendemiano. The work, Macchina inutile, conceived and designed by the student, Luca Tonon, was selected from 30 projects in the competition because of its visual effectiveness, its relevance to the contest and the interesting interpretation of neon; the work was presented to the authorities, students and their families on Saturday 8 June at 10 a.m., the Institute's open day during which the public were able to visit Ouverture, a didactic show of the works made by the students. A second selected project, Come diventare un albero by Francesca Perencin, in the fourth year of Fashion and Costumes, and Albina Meja, fourth year of Industrial Design, will be constructed next October. The collaborative activities with Neon Lauro, fruit of a path guided by Alternanza Scuola Lavoro, were coordinate by Maurizio Armellin and by the History of Visual Arts staff: Katia Camatta, Stefano Pillon and Antonella Uliana. The State Art School of Treviso participated in the "Un mondo a colori" competition held by the Ponte Mediterraneo Association with the support of the Secretariat of the Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Winners and the sponsorship of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The competition was won by Beatrice Bandiera for the graphics section. Another competition of ideas for Pietro Bertoja, consisting of a series of works directed at an interpretative study of sketches by Pietro Bertoja, already published in the book by M. Teresa Muraro and M. Ida Biggi: “L'immagine e la scena. Giuseppe e Pietro Bertoja scenografi alla Fenice 1840-1902.” Marsilio, Venice 1998. Three sketches were chosen: “L'ebrea” act I, scene I; “Il re di Lahore” act IV, scene I; “Il trillo del Diavolo” act I, scene I. The project regards the restoration of the sketches to two- and three-dimensional graphical forms and plastic models. All the works have been reproduced in reduced metrical scales referred to the proportions of the La Fenice theatre in Venice in accordance with the restitution techniques specific to stage settings with a view to their reconstruction. The competing students were: Alberto Brunello, Dionis Ismailaj, Daniela Pizzolato, Valeria Piaser, Barbara Premier and Daniele Ricciardi from the 5th experimental architecture class. The Blitzart 8 exhibition was inaugurated in the Exhibition Hall of our Institute at Carmini in May. The project, launched nine years ago, is intended to provide a space for the students' more personal forms of expression with the exploitation of their creativity unrestrained by the rigour of the teaching paths and showcasing the most interesting works of any kind: graphic, pictorial, photographic, performance and musical. The preparatory encounters for discussing the proposals of the students and the staging become educational activities too, also with the involvement of former students who are attending Art College or University. Sometimes conferences, workshops and encounters with experts from the art world are organized in order to enhance the experience and find new stimuli for the artistic craft. This year's show, entitled "Musicenter" saw the participation of 25 young artists and two music groups. Also hosted was collective work, fruit of a workshop linked to the "Teens Exchange: Bronx-Venice 2013" cultural and artistic exchange experience promoted by the Bronx Museum of Art in New York and supported by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, during which 17 of our students interacted remotely with American contemporaries. Talking about Venice's State Art High School today means highlighting the number of projects that have been developed in the last two years and guided by teachers who are professionals in their own field. These include Profs. Fiori, Baldari and Frascati for the Bucintoro project, Profs. Di Bert , Calebich and De Cunzo for the "art.9" project, the Director, A. Guazzieri, who supported these projects and followed the "Comenius", and the undersigned Prof. Stella Petruzzelli with "School/ Work Alternation". This last project, planned with the collaboration of "Artsystem" and "Isole", explored the theme of the violence inflicted on our cultural assets, mural decorations, monuments, historical paintings, etc. A historical modern memory of a romantic mural located at Rialto in Venice, defaced by vandals and the weather, was saved by reproducing it identically on a marine plywood panel which will allow the inhabitants of the building to continue to enjoy the romantic siren. The function of the architecture laboratory in the Architecture and Environment specialization is to contribute to the acquisition and investigation of the techniques and peculiar procedures of architecture, in synergy with the design disciplines. When working with the laboratory, reflection through direct operation is encouraged. All the hypotheses are checked, compared and experimented in production sequences along the way right up to the final results including the 3D models. In practice the work carried out in the laboratory provides a reading of the methodological-creative process from the design for the work to the acquisition of experience on the materials, the technologies, and the construction of prototypes and 3D scale models, using manual, mechanical and digital means. The theme set out here shows the composition in flat and volume views, and the possibilities given to the combination of primary elements of space only: point, line, surface and volume. The form obtained is the result of geometrical manipulations (addition, subtraction, division, combination, superimposition, rotation, etc. ...) of constructions and other dimensional references (grid, proportions, module, rhythm, equilibrium, symmetry, etc. ...). A bicycle, a camera and decent light. It does not seem so difficult. But apart from the right light, a suitable subject and an optimum setting, a photograph also must have a soul of its own. Someone who knows about this is the winner of the "Salvaguarda Bassano" competition, Nicolò Deganello, a student of the "De Fabris" school. With his photograph "La discesa", Nicolò encapsulated the ideals of the originators of the "CICLOstile" theme in one shot full of pathos, where time seems immobile and the setting is a stupendous oneiric Bassano. The photographs in the second and third places, however, were certainly no less. Alberta Chiminelli, with a shot with a retrò flavour and an ethereal subject, portrayed the elegance of a bicycle pushed by hand while Ilaria Lanaro and Lisanna Averna immortalized details of such a commonplace and obvious object as a bicycle that often escape us but are nevertheless not without their own grace. L’opera alterna momenti epici a episodi intimistici.
