MORE THAN 1300 TEAMS HAVE REGISTERED!
EXTREME 40 ENCHANT TRIESTE!
TOMORROW BARCOLANA CHALLENGE - MEDOT TROPHY!
THE BARCOLANA45 WINNERS RACE ON AN EQUAL FOOTING!
Trieste, 9th October 2014 - With the opening ceremony of the Barcolana Village, which took place this
morning by the seafront near the Maritime Station, the great festival of sailors, locals, and tourists is now in
full swing. Ahead of Sunday's regatta, a rich calendar of events both on land and at sea will provide great
entertainment for everyone.!
!
Organisers wanted the Barcolana Village to be the heart of the event, which has been redesigned this year
to enhance social integration and trade opportunities. “Barcolana produces wealth for Trieste and the whole
region – stressed Edi Kraus, local governor for Economic Development of Trieste's Town Council –
and therefore the regatta cannot exist without on-land initiatives”. Economists have estimated that, against a
total investment of 1.5 million Euros, this year the Barcolana will generate nearly 20 million Euros in revenue
for related businesses and will create about 1000 new jobs. !
As a result of the partnership with Obiettivo Lavoro, the Barcolana aims at promoting employment. “We have
decided to support the Barcolana – explained Giorgio Zaia, director of Obiettivo Lavoro – not only to
create new jobs, but also because the event sends positive and optimistic messages, necessary for the
Italian economic system to recover”.!
!
In the meantime, the number of registrations keeps growing – so far, 1302 sailboats have entered the regatta
and many mooring sites for boats from outside Trieste are already taken, registering a new trend compared
to past years. The credit for this ‘early crowding’ mainly goes to the Land Rover Extreme 40 @ Barcolana the exclusive event that the British car manufacturer brought to Trieste, involving the acrobatic and superfast
catamarans. Of the four competing crews, the Fincantieri Team is the only Italian one, made of Triestine
Olympic sailors on board. “Racing on cats is always thrilling, doing it in my hometown is a dream come true –
stated Lorenzo Bressani, helmsman of the Fincantieri Team – Today's practice race was the first
opportunity we had to get to know our opponents. They know cats better than we do, but with some practice,
tomorrow we will able to achieve good results”. !
!
Mitja Gialuz, chairman of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano wishes the Fincantieri Team good
luck: “I am not only proud to host the extraordinary Extreme 40 in Trieste, but I am also proud to see a true
representative of Triestine sailing race”. !
!
“It is our first time in Trieste – declared Rob Greenhalg, helmsman for Oman Sail – We have discovered
an amazing racing area and an outstanding city. I hope that next year the Extreme Sailing Series will
organise an act of the circuit here in Trieste” . !
!
“We've never been to Trieste before. It is a wonderful city – stated Adam Cowley, helmsman for Land
Rover - tomorrow there should be a slight breeze creating interesting conditions to race in a fleet of four
cats. The town wants to see us race. The Rive are crowded with many interested fans and we are looking
!
forward to hitting the water”.!
!
Beside the big cats, tomorrow the small Este 24 boats will also hit the water: they will compete for the Medot
Trophy in the Barcolana Challenge, a new race for last year’s category winners. For the first time, category
winners will compete on an equal footing, aboard sailboats of the same size. “We know the Barcolana very
well: we have won 4 regattas in a row with Esimit Europa 2. Therefore we have decided to take part in the
Challenge Trophy project: racing against last year’s category winners on an equal footing will be great fun. It
is a sporting event promoting the fair play of all participating skippers.” Tomorrow the crews of Aniene,
Megaenergija, Sayonara Mission Moldova, W Medeleine, Mini Jena, Goofi per Aism, Esco Matto, Vizio,
Diablo; Fixx, TuttaTrieste, Nibbio, Esimit Europa 2 and Malandrina will line-up at the starting line. !
!
JOTUN CUP - THE UFO CLASS RACES FOR A SOCIAL CAUSE – This year the Società Velica di Barcola
e Grignano in cooperation with Yatch Club Adriaco and the sailboat owners of the hardy and evergreen UFO
class have organized a special Barcolana by Night. An important social factor has been added to enrich the
well known sports challenge between 28-foot one-design class boats that takes place on the evening before
the Barcolana Regatta, as evening falls in the Bacino San Giusto. !
The Jotun Cup crews will race to win, but also to make many voluntary and social awareness organizations
known. Every UFO sailboat owner has endorsed a Triestine voluntary organization by showing their logos
with the aim of telling their story, enhancing their role and supporting them. !
“Sport and solidarity have many things in common – explained Gianni de Visintini and Pietro Perelli, UFO
boat owners and organizers of the Jotun Cup Barcolana by Night – in sport you put your best effort, you
fall and get up again, then you win. Sometimes you also lose, but you look ahead. This is the same spirit that
characterizes the world of charity, of those who believe in a goal and do not give up before they reach it. We
are honoured to race side by side with scientific research, healthcare and the battle against rare and severe
diseases. We want to give value to these people and organizations in our own way: through our full
commitment at sea, but also with the joy and solidarity of the whole UFO class on land before and after
racing”. !
Barcolana by Night Jotun Cup will take place on Saturday 11th October at 6.00 pm in the Bacino San Giusto:
13 sailboats endorsing just as many voluntary organizations will line up at the starting line. They include ABC
Association for Pediatric Surgery of Trieste’s Children Hospital Burlo Garofolo, AISM Italian Association
Against Multiple Sclerosis, AGMEN Parent's Association for Children with Hematologic Neoplasias; GAU
Humanitarian Action Group of Clown Doctors, Azzurra Association against rare diseases, Calicanto Integrated Sports Club, Life Help Centre, Luchetta Foundation for Children Victims of war, Veronesi
Foundation for Scientific Progress, Italian League against Cystic Fibrosis, Italian League against Tumors;
Sailors for Haiti supporting the Francesca Rava Foundation.!
REGATTA OF THE SAILBOAT OWNERS OF THE ITALIAN SAILING FEDERATION – It is the race
dedicated to the sailboats that are members of the different sections of the Italian Sailing Federation. In
cooperation with the Italian Sailing Federation - Trieste section, it is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Gulf of
