Prefazione / Foreword
La fotografia naturalistica assume un’importanza notevole per la conoscenza, la valorizzazione e la conservazione
dell’ambiente naturale.
Siamo lieti quindi di ospitare la prima edizione del Fotofestival ASFERICO, convinti che tale evento possa crescere nel tempo,
offrendo così ai visitarori opportunità di approfondimenti sulle tematiche ambientali e occasioni di incontro con noti fotografi
internazionali. Le immagini di questo volume e le multivisioni presentate al Fotofestival ne sono un esempio: è grazie alla
passione di questi fotografi e al sapiente uso della loro attrezzatura che possiamo apprezzare quel meraviglioso mondo che
la natura ci offre.
Attraverso l’occhio e la sensibilità espressiva dei vari autori riusciamo a vedere, a “vivere” atmosfere straordinarie, momenti
particolari, istanti insoliti dell’incredibile universo naturale che ancora ci incantano e sorprendono.
È con questo spirito che anche le Riserve Naturali Regionali Valle Canal Novo e Foci dello Stella, con le loro strutture e le
attività divulgative ed educative proposte, operano nel territorio.
La gestione delle Riserve è affidata al Comune di Marano Lagunare, che da anni lavora con l’intento di coniugare la
conservazione ambientale e la tutela degli habitat e delle specie viventi attraverso la valorizzazione, l’informazione e la
fruizione naturalistica.
L’area (La laguna di Marano) è diventata, grazie alla sua ricchezza biologica, una delle zone umide naturali più importanti
del Mediterraneo, già protetta a livello internazionale quale habitat importante per la vita gli uccelli acquatici ai sensi della
convenzione di Ramsar, è riconosciuta come Sito di Interesse Comunitario (S.I.C.) secondo la direttiva 92/43/CEE denominata
“Direttiva Habitat”, e come Zona di Protezione Speciale (Z.P.S.) secondo la direttiva 79/409/CEE denominata “Direttiva
Uccelli”.
Molti fotografi e birdwatchers hanno imparato a conoscerla e ad apprezzarla per le opportunità che offre, per quella facilità
con cui, in questo particolare e suggestivo territorio lagunare, è possibile ammirare e “catturare” nei propri ricordi, o nella
pellicola, attimi unici di vita naturale.
Naturalistic photography assume a considerable importance for the knowledge, exploitation and preservation of natural
environment.
We are glad to take in the first edition of Fotofestival ASFERICO, in the firm belief that this event can grow further, offering to its
visitors new opportunities to go into environmental themes and to meet well-known international photographers. The images
of this book are an example: it is thanks to the passion of that photographers, and to the wise use of their equipment, that we
can appreciate that wonderful world that the nature offers.
Through the eye and expressive sensibility of varied authors we are able to see, to “live” extraordinary atmospheres, particular
moments, unusual instants of the incredible of universe nature, that still enchant and overtake us.
It is with this spirit that also the Regional Nature Reserve “Valle Canal Novo” and “Foci dello Stella”, with their structures, and
educational activities, work on the territory.
The direction of the reserves is entrusted by Marano Lagunare municipality, that, from years, is working with the objective of
coniugate the environmental preservation and the protection of habitats and of the living species with the exploitation, and
the naturalistic fruition.
The area (Laguna di Marano), thanks to biologic richness, became one of the natural damp zones most important of Mar
Mediterraneo, already protected at international level just like important habitat for the life of aquatic birds, according
to the Ramsar Convention, it is recognized as a Comunitary Interest Site (S.I.C.) in conformity with the directive 92/43/CEE
called “Habitat directive”, and as a Special Protection Area (Z.P.S.) in conformity with the directive 79/409/CEE called “Birds
directive”.
Many photographers and birdwatchers had learned to know and to appreciate it for the opportunity that it offers, for the
facility with whom, in this particular and stimolating lagoon territory, is possible to admire and to “have impressed” in ne’s own
memory, or in a film, unique moments of natural life.

Photography Competition
Nel celebrare la bellezza della natura e la sua grandiosità, questo concorso vuole promuovere la fotografia naturalistica in Italia,
cercando di esprimere nuovi concetti sull’importanza del documento fotografico, destinato non solo a una valenza estetica ma
anche ad una migliore conoscenza dell’ambiente per la sua salvaguardia.
A questa terza edizione del concorso, pur avendo inserito delle nuove regole più restrittive per il digitale, sono pervenute oltre 4000
immagini di circa 250 fotografi di 21 nazioni, tra le quali l’Australia, il Brasile, il Sudafrica, il Portogallo e altre ancora.
Anche quest’anno la qualità delle foto è stata elevata, e in queste pagine si possono ammirare diversi modi e diversi stili di interpretare
la natura. Queste immagini, che sono riuscite a catturare l’attenzione della giuria, sapranno sicuramente attirare anche l’attenzione
e l’ammirazione del pubblico.
The aim of this competition is to promote the naturalistic photography in Italy and to try to express new concepts on the importance
of the photographic document, intended not only with an aesthetic valence but also for a better knowledge of environment.
The third edition of the contest saw a great increase in participants. We’d like to think to have entered the right way in encouraging
naturalistic photography and in awakening people to nature preservation themes.
This year entries, more than 4000, came from about 250 photographers from 21 countries like Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Portugal
and many others.
The average level has been of high standard, with a remarkable variety of subjects, sites and styles. We could discover that through
these images: they’ve attracted jury’s attention and they surely will
attract the attention and the admiration of the public.

Avevo precedentemente perlustrato questa zona e, sapendo che in Gennaio i muschi diventano di color rosso, una
mattina mi preparai per inquadrare la scena con il sorgere del sole. Le nuvole all’orizzonte erano molto promettenti. Il
risultato è stato migliore di quanto avessi sperato.
In January bristly haircap is intensely red coloured. During previous visits, I scouted this scene for a landscape picture.
When arriving this particular morning the clouds at the horizon looked very promising. I set up my equipment, made the
composition and waited for the sun to appear. It did even better as I had hoped for.

La Landmannalaugar è un area montuosa situata
nel sud dell’Islanda con svariate sfumature di colori
e di grandi contrasti. Alla fine di Settembre, dopo
una lunga escursione sotto le intemperie, si aprì uno
scorcio spettacolare su quelle montagne.
Landmannalaugar is an area of great contrasts
with black ridges and coloured rhyolite mountains
situated in south Iceland and for me the pearl of
the central highlands. At the end of September
after a long hiking route where all kind of weather
was experienced, I found spectacular views from
the summit of these mountains.

Nella primavera e nell’estate del 2005 ho fotografato le gru mentre nidificavano, da un nascondiglio in una palude
del sud della Finlandia. In un giorno piovoso con molto vento, una volpe si avvicinò a meno di 20 metri dal nido, ferma,
guardava fissa con avidità le uova. Quando la gru si accorse che la volpe era troppo vicina, si precipitò verso di lei,
urlando e spiegando le ali minacciosamente per scacciarla.
In spring and summer 2005, I photographed cranes nesting from a hide in a swamp in southern Finland. One rainy day,
with me downwind from it, a fox got to within 20m of the nest where it stood and stared greedily at the eggs. When the
crane felt that the fox was too close it swam towards it, screaming and spreading its wings menacingly, and chased the
fox away.

La penisola di Snaefellsnes è situata nel centro dell’ovest dell’Islanda: è stata chiamata “Islanda in miniatura”. Il
paesaggio del litorale costiero è dominato da lussureggianti prati da pascolo e paludi, disseminate da appezzamenti di
vegetazione di brughiera. Questa foto aerea ci mostra tutta la bellezza di questa spettacolare regione.
The Snaefellsnes peninsula is situated on the central west of Iceland. It has been named “Iceland in Miniature”. The
coastal landscape is dominated by lush grazing meadows and marshland, interspersed with patches of moorland
vegetation. This aerial picture show us the coloured beauty of this spectacular scenery.

Il castoro di quest’immagine, si trova di fronte a un accesso che gli permette di andare dal fiume agli alberi della sponda con una certa libertà
per mangiare. Questo posto è vicino al suo principale rifugio. Il castoro è registrato nella lista rossa dell’IUCN delle specie minacciate ed è quasi
scomparso dai fiumi francesi.
Io sono un fotografo subacqueo, specializzato nel Mar Mediterraneo e ho completato questo lavoro grazie all’esplorazione dei fiumi che sono
una parte integrante di questo ecosistema.
Durante questo lavoro ho visto le tracce del castoro e ho esplorato più in profondità questa parte del fiume prima di questo incontro. per
parecchi anni, grazie alla sua protezione, la popolazione è costantemente aumentata anche se è sempre raro osservarlo nel suo ambiente
acquatico.
The beaver is in front of an access that allows him to go from the river to the trees of the bank, in a discreet manner, to eat. This place is close
to its main hut. The beaver is registered on the IUCN red list of threatened species. It nearly disappeared from the French rivers. Sub aquatic
photographer, specialist in Mediterranean Sea, I complete this work by the exploration of the Mediterranean rivers, which are an integral part
of this ecosystem. During this work, I saw the beaver’s traces and I explored more in depth this part of the river until this encounter. For some
years, as a result of its protection, the population has been constantly increasing. However very seldom one is able to observe it in its sub-aquatic
environment. It could be a symbol of the European wildlife and of the community fights that are still to be lead for the protection of the sensitive
species.

L’animale nella foto è uno degli ultimi sette dugonghi rimasti lungo la costa del Mar Rosso egiziano. La baia sabbiosa,
dove questo maschio solitario vive, è una delle sue ultime risorse. Purtroppo però, a causa del disturbo arrecato dai turisti
che alloggiano nei tre nuovi hotel costruiti in questa baia particolare, non riesce a cibarsi sufficientemente fra l’erba
marittima.
This is one of the last seven dugongs along the Egyptian Red Sea Coast. The sandy bay where this lonely male lives, is
one of its last resorts. Tourism in Egypt is rapidly expanding, and this particular bay, has three large, brand-new hotels. The
dugong is constantly chased by tourists and does not get enough time to feed on the sea grass anymore.

Sulla torre di osservazione nel nostro giardino avevamo fissato, da qualche anno, alcune coppie di nidi artificiali. L’anno
scorso, 3 paia di storni e un paio di gheppi si dividevano questi nidi. Sebbene i gheppi cacciassero solo piccoli mammiferi
e lucertole, le loro apparizioni creavano sempre grande spavento tra gli altri uccelli. Questo gheppio aveva appena
portato un topo ai suoi piccoli come pasto quando lo fotografai. Solo quando controllai l’immagine nella macchina
fotografica notai che nell’inquadratura, c’era una rondine che attaccava il gheppio.
On the watchtower in our garden we had fixed a few nestboxes, a couple of years ago. Last year, 3 pair of starlings,
a pair of kestrels were sharing these boxes. Although the kestrels hunt only small mammals and lizards, their appearance
always frighten the other birds. This bird was just bringing a mouse to its youngs to feed, when I photographed it. Only when
I checked the pictures on the camera I noticed that a swallow got in the frame too, which was attacking the kestrel.

Una coppia di codirosso, nella Finlandia centrale, era indaffarata a portare il cibo ai pulcini affamati. Riprendendo da un
nascondiglio, imparai che il maschio si posava spesso per un momento su un certo ramo prima dello scatto finale verso il nido. Ho
mirato in direzione del ramo e fissato la macchina fotografica. Quando l’uccello atterrò, misi a fuoco su di lui e premetti l’otturatore
rilasciandolo solo quando il codirosso ripartì
A Redstart couple, in central Finland, was busy bringing food to their hungry chicks. Shooting from a hide I quickly learned that the
male would often perch for a moment on a certain branch before the final spurt to the nest. I aimed towards the branch and set my
camera on one shot. When the bird landed, I focused on it and pressed the shutter and release it when the bird was gone again.

La foto selezionata di una libellula della specie (Aeshna mixta) fa parte di una decina di foto appartenenti alla stessa
sequenza, dopo i primi scatti in cui il tempo di esposizione troppo veloce ha congelato il movimento delle ali ho modificato
gradualmente i parametri di scatto per avere l’effetto “Motion Blur” delle ali.
The selected picture of a “aeshna mixta“ is one of about ten photos of the same sequence; after the first shots, in which
the exposure time was too quick, I’ve frozen the movement of the wings, gradually changing the parameters of shooting
for the “Motion Blur” effect of the wings.

L’animale nella foto è un Pseudopo europeo ed è stato ripreso durante un viaggio fotografico nell’isola greca di
Lesbo. L’isola è famosa per la grande quantità di uccelli e magnifici rettili che vi si possono trovare.
The animal on the picture is a European Glass Lizard and is photographed on a photo trip to the greek island of
Lesbos. The island is famous because of the large amount of birds but also there are living beautiful reptiles.

Ogni anno in autunno nel bosco vicino a casa mia, è presente un cospicuo numero di funghi. Qesta volta ho voluto
provare un approccio fotografico più creativo. Mentre stava diventando buio e le mosche si posavano sul cappuccio di
questo fungo solitario ho scattato e zoomato durante l’esposizione.
Every year in autumn a considerable a number of fungi is present in a forest close to my home. This time I wanted to try
a more creative photographic approach. While it was getting dark and flies landed on the hood of a lonely porcelain
fungus, I pressed the shutter release and zoomed in after half of the exposure time was past.

La fascia di tundra a betulle è una miniera di spunti, un caos visivo che in settembre, alla moltitudine di forme, somma
la suggestione dei colori. Il problema non è più trovare qualcosa da fotografare, ma dargli una compiutezza, un ordine,
uno sviluppo.
The tundra birch band is a mine of hints, a visual chaos which in September add the charm of the colours to the
multitude of shapes. The problem is not to just find something to photograph, but rather to give it a completeness, an
order, a path.

Questa immagine mostra l’intricato disegno del sifone e della superficie del mantello della tridacna, scattata nell’atollo
di Rongelap, nelle Isole Marshall. L’intensa colorazione è il risultato del pigmento prodotto dalle cellule del mantello che
aiutano il mollusco a proteggersi dagli intensi raggi UV vicino alla superficie.
This image shows the intricate pattern of the excurrent siphon and the mantle surface of a horseshoe clam (Hippopus
hippopus) taken in Rongelap atoll, Marshall Islands. The intense coloration is the result of pigments produced by mantle
cells: it helps to protect the clam against the strong UV radiation near the surface.

Ero nel Parco Nazionale di Kruger , il maggiore del Sud Africa, per un safari. Una mattina, non trovando niente di
particolarmente interessante, decisi di passare del tempo in cerca di dettagli e di disegni negli onnipresenti impala e
zebra. Ho cercato di creare un’immagine astratta in cui i disegni delle due zebre contrastassero nell’angolo e nel punto
di messa a fuoco.
I was on a safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa flagship park. One morning, when I could not find any of the usual
suspects, I decided to spend some time looking for details and patterns in the ubiquitous impala and zebra. I tried to
create an abstract image in which the patterns of two zebras contrasted both in angle and focus.

L’atollo di Aldabra è un sito che ospita numerose specie di tartarughe. Questa immagine è stata scattata mentre
facevo snorkeling ed è stato possibile realizzarla grazie all’acqua limpida sotto un cielo blu con delle belle nuvole gonfie
e alle tartarughe stesse che si avvicinavano incuriosite e per nulla intimorite.
The Aldabra atoll is home to many turtles. When I was snorkeling in the lagoon, they’d sometimes come to check me out.
This little guy makes a perfect picture in the clear waters under a blue sky with puffy white clouds.

Il calamaro di Humboldt, conosciuto anche come calamaro gigante, è il più lungo e aggressivo mollusco che vive nelle
acque correnti dell’Oceano Pacifico dell’est. Questa foto mostra il cannibalismo: un comportamento noto ma raramente
documentato.
The Humboldt Squid, also known as Jumbo Squid, Diablo Roj, Pota or Calamari, is a large, aggressive predatory mollusk
found in the waters of the Humboldt Current in the Easter Pacific Ocean. This image shows cannibalism, a known behaviour,
seldom documented.
