Prefazione / Foreword
La fotografia naturalistica assume un’importanza notevole per la conoscenza, la valorizzazione e la conservazione
dell’ambiente naturale.
Siamo lieti quindi di ospitare la seconda edizione del Fotofestival ASFERICO, convinti che tale evento possa crescere nel
tempo, offrendo così ai visitarori opportunità di approfondimenti sulle tematiche ambientali e occasioni di incontro con noti
fotografi internazionali. Le immagini di questo volume e le multivisioni presentate al Fotofestival ne sono un esempio: è grazie
alla passione di questi fotografi e al sapiente uso della loro attrezzatura che possiamo apprezzare il meraviglioso mondo che
la natura ci offre.
Attraverso l’occhio e la sensibilità espressiva dei vari autori riusciamo a vedere, a “vivere” atmosfere straordinarie, momenti
particolari, istanti insoliti dell’incredibile universo naturale che ancora ci incantano e sorprendono.
È con questo spirito che anche le Riserve Naturali Regionali Valle Canal Novo e Foci dello Stella, con le loro strutture e le
attività divulgative ed educative proposte, operano nel territorio.
La gestione delle Riserve è affidata al Comune di Marano Lagunare, che da anni lavora con l’intento di coniugare la
conservazione ambientale e la tutela degli habitat e delle specie viventi attraverso la valorizzazione, l’informazione e la
fruizione naturalistica.
L’area (La laguna di Marano) è diventata, grazie alla sua ricchezza biologica, una delle zone umide naturali più importanti
del Mediterraneo, già protetta a livello internazionale quale habitat importante per la vita gli uccelli acquatici ai sensi della
convenzione di Ramsar, è riconosciuta come Sito di Interesse Comunitario (S.I.C.) secondo la direttiva 92/43/CEE denominata
“Direttiva Habitat”, e come Zona di Protezione Speciale (Z.P.S.) secondo la direttiva 79/409/CEE denominata “Direttiva
Uccelli”.
Molti fotografi e birdwatchers hanno imparato a conoscerla e ad apprezzarla per le opportunità che offre, per quella facilità
con cui, in questo particolare e suggestivo territorio lagunare, è possibile ammirare e “catturare” nei propri ricordi, o sulla
pellicola, attimi unici di vita naturale.
Naturalistic photography assume a considerable importance for knowledge, exploitation and preservation of natural
environment.
We are glad to take in the second edition of Fotofestival ASFERICO, in the firm belief that this event can grow further, offering
to its visitors new opportunities to go into environmental themes and to meet well-known international photographers. The
images of this book are an example: it is thanks to the passion of that photographers, and to the wise use of their equipment,
that we can appreciate the wonderful world that the nature offers.
Through the eye and expressive sensibility of many authors we are able to see, to “live” extraordinary atmospheres, particular
moments, unusual instants of the incredible natural universe, that still enchant and overtake us.
It is with this spirit that also the Regional Nature Reserve “Valle Canal Novo” and “Foci dello Stella”, with their structures, and
educational activities, work on territory.
The direction of the reserves is entrusted by Marano Lagunare municipality, that, from years, is working with the objective of
coniugate the environmental preservation and the protection of habitats and of the living species with the exploitation, and
the naturalistic fruition.
The area (Laguna di Marano), thanks to biologic richness, became one of the natural damp zones most important of Mar
Mediterraneo, already protected at international level just like important habitat for the life of aquatic birds, according
to the Ramsar Convention, it is recognized as a Comunitary Interest Site (S.I.C.) in conformity with the directive 92/43/CEE
called “Habitat directive”, and as a Special Protection Area (Z.P.S.) in conformity with the directive 79/409/CEE called “Birds
directive”.
Many photographers and birdwatchers had learned to know and to appreciate it for the opportunity that it offers, for the
facility with whom, in this particular and stimolating lagoon territory, is possible to admire and to “have impressed” in one’s
own memory, or on a film, unique moments of natural life.

Nel celebrare la bellezza della natura e la sua grandiosità, questo concorso vuole promuovere la fotografia naturalistica in Italia,
cercando di esprimere nuovi concetti sull’importanza del documento fotografico, destinato non solo a una valenza estetica ma
anche ad una migliore conoscenza dell’ambiente per la sua salvaguardia.
A questa quarta edizione del concorso, sono pervenute oltre 4500 immagini di circa 280 fotografi di 23 nazioni, tra le quali l’Estonia, la
Grecia, la Russia, il Portogallo e altre ancora
Anche quest’anno la qualità delle foto è stata elevata, e in queste pagine si possono ammirare diversi modi e diversi stili di interpretare
la natura. Queste immagini, che sono riuscite a catturare l’attenzione della giuria, sapranno sicuramente attirare anche l’attenzione
e l’ammirazione del pubblico.
The aim of this competition is to promote the naturalistic photography in Italy and to try to express new concepts on the importance
of the photographic document, intended not only with an aesthetic value but also for a better knowledge of environment.
The fourth edition of the contest saw a great increase in participants. We’d like to think to have entered the right way in encouraging
naturalistic photography and in awakening people to nature preservation themes.
This year entries, more than 4500, came from about 280 photographers from 23 countries like Estonia, Grecia,Russia, Portugal and many
others. The average level has been of high standard, with a remarkable variety of subjects, sites and styles. We could discover that
through these images they’ve attracted jury’s attention and they surely will attract the attention and the admiration of the public.

Uno scatto costruito con intelligenza, ruotando la macchina per dare al capodoglio che scende un angolo verticale,
anche a rischio di rendere diagonale la linea della superficie. È interessante anche la scelta di una focale fissa (24 millimetri),
scelta forse per la sua elevata luminosità sott'acqua. Nella foto c'è un'atmosfera calma e fredda, data dalla dominante blu,
anche se unita al senso del movimento discendente, verso gli abissi misteriosi dove cacciano i capodogli.
This picture is cleverly done, rotating the camera to achieve a vertical axis for the whale, even though moving the sea
surface to a diagonal line. It is interesting also the choice of a 24 millimeter fixed focal lens, since, though difficult to utilize, its
luminosity is great underwater. There is a cold, calm atmosphere in it, given by the blue dominant, although combined with a
sense of movement going down, to the mysterious deepness where sperm whales hunt.

Nella costa centromeridionale del Pacifico in Costa Rica, si trova il villaggio di Ojochal, posizionato tra svariate belle
spiagge e circondato da sontuose montagne come l'altura di Punta Mala. Qui ho trovato questo gioiello naturale: una
segreta e piccola cascata chiamata El Póvon. Immaginare come queste pietre tondeggianti siano arrivate in questo
luogo fa diventare ancor più magica questa straordinaria cascata.
On the south central Pacific coast of Costa Rica lies the village of Ojochal. It is centrally located among several beautiful
beaches and surrounded by magnificent mountains like the hills of Punta Mala. I found there this natural jewel, a hidden
small waterfall called El Pavón. To imagine how these mysterious green boulder stones could have arrived to this place
makes even more magical this unique waterfall.

Nel mese di dicembre, il sole è appena sorto sulla suggestiva isola di Senja nel nord della Norvegia. L'alba sembra durare per sempre e dà al fotografo l'opportunità
di catturare la vera natura del selvaggio Oceano Artico che si schianta contro le rocce dei fiordi. Una lunga esposizione e un filtro polarizzatore mi hanno permesso
di immortalare la particolare atmosfera della tempesta in un freddo giorno d'inverno.
During December, the sun does hardly rise over the scenic island of Senja in Northern Norway. Twilight seems to last forever and gives the photographer plenty of
opportunities to capture the true nature of the wild Arctic Ocean crashing against the rocks of the winter fjords. A long exposure and a polarization filter allowed me
to capture this particular feeling of a stormy, cold winter day.

Abbiamo trascorso l'estate del 2009 nelle isole Azzorre per filmare e fotografare l'abbondante vita marina. Questa
fotografia è stata scattata in uno dei nostri primi viaggi mostrando un capodoglio che si immerge fino alla sua zona di
alimentazione - e da come sembra - si prepara per le alte pressioni in anticipo.
We spent summer 2009 on the Acores Islands filming and photographing the abundant marine life. This photograph
was taken on one of our first trips showing a sperm whale diving down to his feeding grounds – and as it seems – getting
prepared for the high pressures ahead.

In una giornata di sole, dell’autunno scorso, ho trascorso un giorno intero in piedi in un freddo ruscello di montagna nelle
Ardenne belghe, cercando di rendere le immagini del paesaggio autunnale da sotto l’acqua. Ho scelto un posto dove la
corrente non era così forte e ho cercato di concentrami sulle foglie galleggianti. In questa immagine le cose si sono ben
amalgamate e penso che offra una visione originale delle Ardenne in autunno.
On a sunny autumn day last year I spent a whole day standing in a cold mountain stream in the Belgian Ardennes trying
to make autumn landscape pictures from under water. I choose a spot where the current was not so strong and tried to
focus on autumn leaves floating by. In this picture things came together nicely and I think it provides a fresh look on the
Ardennes in autumn.

Questa immagine è stata scattata in autunno nella tundra norvegese. Il bue muschiato è un mammifero artico che trascorre la maggior
parte della sua giornata a brucare l’erba ed a riposare. Quando ho visto questi due esemplari in corsa, ho pensato che stavo assistendo ad un
momento starordinario. Così ho catturato questa immagine approfittando della luce diurna e dei colori di fine autunno della tundra.
I took this image during tundra’s autumn. The musk ox is an arctic mammal which spend most of its daytime eating grass and resting on. When
I saw this two musk oxen running I thought I was assisting an extraordinary moment. So I took the image taking advantage of the last daylights
and the arctic autumn fine colours.

La notte stava scendendo sul prato dove un grande cervo e le sue femmine stavano pascolando; la prossimità di una palude ha
creato una bella atmosfera nebbiosa in questa radura delle Ardenne francesi. Un giovane maschio è uscito dal bosco per cercare un
contatto con le femmine. A quel punto ho deciso di mettere a fuoco sul grande cervo in attesa della sua reazione, che è arrivata molto
velocemente.
The night was falling down on the meadow where a big red deer and its females were eating; the proximity of a marsh created a
beautiful misty atmosphere on this place of rut in french Ardennes. A young male came out of the wood to take its chance with females.
I decided to focus on the big deer waiting for its reaction, which arrived very quickly.

Il sole, alzandosi, filtrava drammaticamente attraverso gli alberi sullo sfondo, disegnando una specie di arpa solare.
Ho scattato qualche foto e improvvisamente alcuni piccioni si sono alzati in volo di fronte agli alberi. Atterrarono proprio
attraverso l'arpa solare. Ho subito cambiato l'inquadratura e ho iniziato a concentrarmi sugli uccelli.
When the sun came up it was dramatically shining through the trees on the background, making some nice solar harps.
I made a few pictures and suddenly some pigeons came flying to the open field in front of the trees. They landed just
through the solar harps. I quickly changed my framing plans and started to focus myself on the birds.

I combattenti sono uccelli affascinanti che mostrano un comportamento molto interessante durante la stagione degli amori.
Questo è un esemplare maschio in un lek in Norvegia. Era una giornata molto ventosa e nevosa, all’inizio di giugno. Il mio riparo era
scosso dalla tempesta e ho pensato che non sarei stato in grado di catturare un’immagine forte. Invece sono stato fortunato.
Ruffs are attractive birds showing very interesting behavior during the mating season. This male was displaying at a lek in Norway.
It was a very windy and snowy day at the beginning of June. My blind was shaken by the storm and I thought that I never would be
able to make a sharp image under this circumstances. But I was favoured by fortune.

Iridescenza e velocità: piccolo gioiello in rapida corsa tra asperità calcaree. Il fluire dei colori, plasmato dall'incidenza
della luce sul coleottero, risalta infine su uno sfondo pressoché bicromatico, ma solo l'immaginazione potrebbe restituire il
suono dei tarsi frenetici sul suolo. Iridescenza e velocità, impalpabile connubio del microcosmo.
Iridescence and speed: a small jewel is quickly running among calcareous roughness. Colours? Flow, moulded by the
incidence of light on the beetle, stands out on an almost black-and-white background, but only imagination could return
the sound of frenetic tarsi on the ground. Iridescence and speed, impalpable union in the microcosm.

Il ragno vespa è un mirabile architetto, in grado
di tessere enormi ragnatele dal caratteristico
“ricamo” a zig-zag (stabilimentum). Per ottenere
un'immagine meno usuale, ho cercato di far
risaltare i riflessi creati dalla scomposizione della
luce sulle gocce di rugiada.
The wasp spider is an admirable architect, able
to weave enormous webs in their typical “zigzag”
embroidery (stabilimentum). I tried to emphasize
the reflections created by the decomposition of
light on the drops to get a less usual image.

L'autunno 2009 è stato spettacolare sulle montagne del centro della Francia per l'abbondanza di bacche di sorbo delgli
uccellatori. Ho trascorso molti giorni cercando di fotografarle, prima di trovare questo albero straordinario, stacolmo di
frutti, che mi ha permesso di comporre una scena delicata con il rosso delle bacche e il grigio cenere dei licheni.
The autumn 2009 was spectacular in the mountains of the centre of France for the plentiful fruiting of rowans. I spent
many days trying to photograph them, before finding this extraordinary tree, loaded with fruits, composing a delicate
scene with the red of berries and the ash grey of lichens.

Sul lato settentrionale dell'isola di Tenerife, la nebbia e l'elevata variabilità climatica, favoriscono lo sviluppo di una vegetazione esclusiva
e variegata. Quest'isola è considerata come un "continente in miniatura" dove spedizioni scentifiche possono venire a studiare per tutto il
periodo dell'anno le numerose specie endemiche presenti.
On the northern side of Tenerife, fog and high climate variability, support the development of a unique and varied vegetation. This island
is considered as a "miniature continent" where thems of scientists can come to study for the whole year the numerous endemic species
present.

Questa immagine è stata scattata in una piccola palude, nell'aera naturale di Veluwe in una grigia giornata di
dicembre. Sono stato attratto dal piacevole disegno dell'erba fluttuante catturata dal sottile strato di ghiaccio ricoperto
di una leggera spruzzata di neve. In questo periodo dell'anno, quest'erba è distesa sull'acqua. Subito dopo aver finito di
fotografare, ha cominciato a piovere e la neve è scomparsa velocemente.
The picture was taken at a small fen in the Veluwe nature area (the Netherlands) on a grey day in December. I was
attracted by the nice patterns of the floating sweetgrass (glyceria fluitans) captured in a thin layer of ice with a little bit
of snow on top of it. In this time of the year, this grass lays flat on the water. Shortly after I was finished with my pictures, it
started raining and the snow quickly disappeared.

Stavo camminando alla ricerca di dettagli da fotografare sul fango secco, come tante altre volte, ma ho deciso di abbandonare il treppiede e di
scattare utilizzando lunghe esposizioni mentre ero in movimento. Tra le tante, ho scelto questa perchè mi ricorda un sogno. Nella maggior parte delle
immagini è possibile immaginare un gruppo di uccelli che vola via, ma, in alto a destra potete vedere la realtà; è solo fango.
I was walking around and taking detail pictures of dried mud as many other times but, I decided to leave the tripod and to take longer exposure pictures
while I was moving the camera. Among many I took, I chose this one because it reminds me of a dream. In most of the picture's surface you can guess a
group of birds flying away but, at the right upper corner you can see reality, it is just mud .

La vita dei pinguini imperatore (Aptenodytes forsteri)
The life of the emperor penguins

La storia del pinguino imperatore potrebbe essere la più affascinate storia della
vita nel mondo naturale: quasi nessun'altra creatura ha un adattamento migliore
al suo ambiente. Incontrare questi grandi uccelli, che indisturbati dalla presenza
dell'uomo, conducono le loro vite nei luoghi più marginali che si possano trovare,
può essere l'esperienza più emozionante di tutta una vita. Questa storia segue gli
uccelli dal loro saltar fuori dal mare come razzi, al loro vagare sul ghiaccio per
chilometri per raggiungere la famiglia e assicurare la crescita di nuove spettacolari
generazioni di pinguini. Le immagini sono riprese nel Weddell Sea all'inizio della
stagione, ecco qui i piccoli tra le zampe dei loro genitori.

The history of the emperor penguins is one of the most fascinating history of
life in the natural world. Hardly no other creature has a better adaptation to its
environment. In addition - meeting these big, man-like birds, that undisturbed of
human presence lead their lives in the most marginal surroundings – that is an
experience of a lifetime. This story follows the birds from when they pop up of the
sea as rockets, wander over the ice for miles, before they reach their family and
ensure the growth of new generations of spectacular penguins. The images are
made in the Weddell Sea very early in the season, therefore we see the cute
chicks on the parent’s feet.

L’ultimo dragone andaluso / The last Andalusian dragon
Almuñecar, Spain
Il tunnel scavato dalla femmina gravida, può avere una profondità compresa tra 25 e 70 cm e termina in una piccola cavità dove è depositato il suo prezioso
tesoro. Le fotografie di questa coppia durante il lungo periodo di incubazione, sono un vero e proprio scoop, non essendo mai riuscito a osservare questo incredibile
evento. Quasi un anno dopo, la deposizione delle uova si presentano i piccoli camaleonti. Come autentiche repliche degli adulti vengono al mondo con uno
sforzo tremendo per uscire dai loro involucri flessibili. Guardando queste foto possiamo immaginare con la mente come potevano nascere i dinosauri. Poche ore
dopo la schiusa i giovani lasciano la tana situata all'interno della galleria che la madre aveva scavato un anno prima.

The photographs of this couple during the
long incubation period are a proper scoop,
having never been able before, to observe
this amazing event. Almost a year after egg
hatch out occurs, the small chameleons
come out. As an authentic replicas of the
adults they come into the world making a
tremendous effort to get rid of their flexible
wrapping. Looking at these images we can
recreate in our minds the dinosaurs and
as they should be born. A few hours after
hatching the young leave the den that their
mother dug a year before.
