Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch presents for the first time in Italy the work of the Austrian artist Nikolaus Gansterer. The
artist has chosen the title Thinking Matters for this exhibition which focuses on the processes behind human cognition.
The exhibition — which represents another step in Gansterer's visual research — explores in detail the relationship
between drawing, thought and action. His work is a true example of interdisciplinary studies; it is the result of a close
confrontation between socio-humanistic, scientific and artistic disciplines from which the artist takes single
methodologies and applies to these his unique, highly personal artistic language. The result of this work is an
environmental installation which occupies the entire space: the work is composed of autonomous elements which,
contemporaneously, are tiles of a vaster mosaic which the artist has developed specially for the gallery space.
Gansterer creates a free universe of works which is somewhere between the physical and the ideal; two realities which
continually cross-reference each other. The intellectual processes take on a temporary form and substance in the works,
constituting the starting point to develop new lines of thought. Gansterer's aesthetic re-elaboration on completion of his
creative journey of theorization gives rise to a series of objects pertaining to scientific research which evoke not only the
ideal but also the material dimension: blackboards with diagrams and graphs, laboratory tables with numerous notes,
drawings and glass slides, frameworks made of light wood which take the form of three-dimensional chemical structures.
The artist constructs a laboratory in which he conducts a series of experiments to trace, as he himself says: “essential
flows of consciousness between recognition and naming” of reality. His drawings, sculptures, videos and his
translectures are visual and concrete instruments to know and understand this flow of thought. It is his drawings which
represent the common denominator in the exhibition; almost evanescent, drawn in chalk and white pastel, they seem to
become fragile threads which support the artist’s theoretical constructions.
The exhibition gives the visitor a fascinating insight into the essential questions of human perception and interpretation
told through the subjective construction of reality.
Nikolaus Gansterer (1974) was born in Klosterneuburg, Austria and now, lives and works between Vienna and Berlin. He graduated in
Anthropology from the University of Vienna, in Transmedia Art from the University of Applied Art - Vienna and later, he completed his graduate
studies at the Jan Van Eyck Academy of Maastricht. He co-founded the Institute for Transacoustic Research and currently teaches at the Institute
for Transmedia Art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He is known internationally through his exhibitions and performances.

La Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch presenta per la prima volta in Italia il lavoro dell’austriaco Nikolaus Gansterer. Thinking
Matters è il titolo della mostra scelto dall’artista che affronta come tematica i processi cognitivi umani.
La mostra viene a configurarsi come un ulteriore tassello nella ricerca visiva di Gansterer, che indaga in profondità il
rapporto tra disegno, pensiero e azione, e la cui cifra stilistica si caratterizza per una spiccata attitudine allo studio
interdisciplinare. La sua analisi è il risultato di un serrato confronto fra materie socio-umanistiche e settori scientifici, dei
quali l’artista riprende le singole metodologie di ricerca rielaborandole secondo un personale linguaggio artistico. Il
prodotto di questo lavoro si dipana visivamente attraverso un’opera ambientale costituita da più elementi autonomi e allo
stesso tempo tessere di un mosaico più ampio, che l’artista sviluppa appositamente per gli spazi della galleria.
Gansterer crea un libero universo di lavori, collocabili tra realtà fisica e realtà ideale, che continuamente rimandano l’uno
verso l’altro. I processi intellettivi assumono temporaneamente forma e sostanza nelle opere e diventano punti di
partenza per sviluppare nuove linee di pensiero.
La rielaborazione estetica alla quale Gansterer giunge alla fine del suo percorso di teorizzazione, si traduce in una serie
di oggetti che rimandano non solo idealmente, ma anche nell’aspetto materiale, all’ambito della ricerca scientifica:
lavagne con diagrammi e grafici, tavoli da laboratorio con tanto di appunti, disegni e lastre di vetro, intelaiature di legno
leggerissime che ricordano modelli di strutture chimiche tridimensionali.
L’artista costruisce un laboratorio nel quale ha effettuato molteplici esperimenti per tracciare, come lui stesso ha
dichiarato: “essenziali flussi di coscienza tra rilevazione e riconoscimento” della realtà. I disegni, le sculture, i video e le
lezioni/performance sono lo strumento visivo e concreto per conoscere tali flussi di pensiero. Il disegno in particolare
emerge come comune denominatore della mostra, quasi evanescente nella sua tecnica a gessetto e pastello bianco,
appare come un fragile filo che sorregge la costruzione teorica elaborata dall’artista.
La mostra concede un affascinante spaccato sulle questioni essenziali della percezione e interpretazione umana,
raccontando della costruzione soggettiva della realtà.
Nikolaus Gansterer (1974) nasce a Klosterneuburg, Austria. Vive e lavora tra Vienna e Berlino.
Si è laureato in Antropologia all’Università di Vienna, e in Transmedia Art presso l’Università di Arti Applicate di Vienna, completando la sua
formazione post-laurea alla Jan van Eyck Academy di Maastricht. Ha co-fondato l’Institute for Transacoustic Research e attualmente tiene delle
lezioni all’ Institute for Transmedia Art dell’Università di Arti Applicate di Vienna. E’ internazionalmente attivo con mostre e performance.
