Strategie Investimento © Cornèr Banca SA Wall Street Echo and the major exchanges in the world by Cornèr Bank September 2016 Despite Brexit In recent months, the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom has had a major influence on the stock markets, particularly in Europe. The markets gradually reflected changes in the predicted outcome of the referendum, becoming increasingly volatile as voting day approached. However, the result of the vote upset all forecasts and, as in all cases of “surprises” that inject uncertainty into the system, the equity markets reacted nervously, confirming the views of analysts who feared a disastrous scenario for the markets and for the concept of Europe in the event of a victory of the “secessionists”. The weight of the correction was born primarily by the more structurally weak sectors. Therefore, a significant impact has been seen in the banking sector, which continues to suffer from underlying fragility caused by the undercapitalisation of many institutions as well as by low profitability, in part caused by current monetary policies. However, once again, after the emotion of the moment had passed, the markets entered a phase of recovery and in less than two months, by mid-August, the Brexit effect on the Eurostoxx was cancelled out. Uncertainty concerning the medium-term evolution and impact of the British decision remains, however the markets have turned their focus back to the short-term horizon. With this horizon, the S&P 500 reached new all-time highs, supported by positive employment market data, and continues to outperform other developed markets. The European and Japanese markets are more challenged as, despite their specific characteristics, they share structural issues of low growth and deflationary pressure. The recovery continues in emerging markets, with raw-material producing countries achieving solid performance after having suffered considerably last year. Looking ahead, assuming that the monetary stimulus remains in place, we believe that the stock markets will continue to take advantage of significant underlying support. However, based on the fundamentals and compared to historical data, stocks are generally expensive. In this context, the Eurozone is currently the most attractive market, both in terms of fundamental valuations and because it is supported by a dividend yield of around 4%, which is decidedly high compared to bond yields. In general, with a time horizon of a few months, we believe that the stock markets do not have great potential and that new volatility is possible. In the bond market, also in the wake of the Brexit victory, bond yields have reached new all-time lows and no significant trend changes are forecasted in the coming months. In the medium term, we continue to maintain a positive view on the US dollar. However, in the short term this stance will remain highly dependent on the evolution of expectations concerning new rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
