A story ... Adriatico o Ionio? come dire: alba o tramonto? Summer is almost upon us and for the Salento locals that is quite a big deal. Now, putting the prospect of spending their days soaking in warm water on some beach sipping a mojito to one side, we are obliged to point out that the sea is not the only thing which makes summer great in Salento. Because a day can be very long and in 24 hours if you allow yourself to relax instead of constantly rushing around you will be able to appreciate the changing light on the landscape. In Salento they rise early in the Summer. A 10 am start at the latest, coffee and a patisserie cream filled “pasticciotto” to start, “caffè in ghiaccio con latte di mandorla” (a summer spin on the usual coffee: ice coffee with almond milk) and “fruttone”. No sooner have you consumed your calorific breakfast treat than it’s time to get down to the serious decision making and think about what really matters on a summer morning: the Adriatic or the Ionian? More than a question, a Hamlet-like question, a virtual crossroads: the eternal conflict between East and West concerning the 50 kilometres separating Otranto from Gallipoli. Adriatic or Ionian? It’s like saying: sunrise or sunset? It depends on the wind. To emerge unscathed from this agonizing inner conflict it is enough to know the basic rule: go to the Adriatic Sea if there is Scirocco wind and go to the Ionian sea if there is Tramontana wind, but if by chance you are not familiar with the wind “rules”, then going to the beach could turn into a nightmare. Just enough time passes to allow you to savour the last bite of your pastry and suddenly a full blown debate begins involving an exchange of phone calls and SMS to clarify the weather situation. Needless to say that the matter is susceptible to much controversy. The debate kicks off, whatsapp notifications flood in fast: some post photos of a caribbean-sea on the Adriatic coast without presenting any evidence that they are actually there in person and there are those who swear they have a cousin who is a meteorologist who insists they go to the Ionian. At 12 there is the growing prospect of a second “pasticciotto”, because in the meantime the situation hasn’t changed much: Tramontana or Scirocco? The hours pass, the doubt remains. When you finally reach the sea, it’s at least two in the afternoon and the “pasticciotto” is already a distant memory. But its all about how you look in that swimming costume so a INFO: Tel. “frisa” with tomatoes, rocket and capers seems a much more sensible option than a “rustico” with béchamel sauce, which will, however, temp you again later on, because deep down you know that it doesn’t deserve to be abandoned. And indeed it will join you later on, accompanied by a cool beer to be enjoyed against a sunset backdrop over the Ionian Sea, the coast recommended by your “wise” cousin the meteorologist. But a morning at sea doesn’t always have a happy ending. The sliding doors of fate might also have made you decide to go to the Adriatic on the day which happened to be experiencing one of the summer’s fiercest Tramontana winds. At this point there are only two things to do: 1- Keep sending photos of a photoshopped Caribbean coastline to your friends; 2- Take refuge in a restaurant, vent your frustration on a seafood dish and carefully plan your “Machiavellian” revenge the entire afternoon and evening. To begin with you should understand the concept of the afternoon, which incidentally does not begin before six o’clock. It’s around this time, in fact, that those who are not stranded at sea begins to timidly make their way out of their cool and comfortable home in order to make contact with civilization. The villages come to life, the streets come alive. It’s as if the day is celebrating a new beginning. The angst caused by a morning spent deciphering the winds is now little more than a hiccup in your short-term memory. So without realising it, you find yourself sitting at the table in an uber-stylish bar surrounded by the ancient walls of a fifteenth century castle enjoying an appetizer of “friselline” with olive oil, black olives, vegetable crudités and a fresh white chardonnay that makes up for every minute spent cursing the tramontana wind, which in the meantime has actually served its purpose as thr only thing keeping you cool in the intense heat. Stunned by the white light that reflects every tiny crevice in the wall, “piazza” (town square) or courtyard, you feel the need to take shelter in one of those little bars which are somehow no more than 20 meters squared, with four tables outside and an endless supply of the game “tressetta” inside, played by experiences drinkers, who have a solid playing history. The lucky ones, between one “tressetta” hand and another, will also be able to hear some pleasant regional history, maybe in old “griko” (the local dialect) and get enthusiastic about having not understood a single word. Now photoshopped photos of the Caribbean coastline are now no longer needed, you are being exposed to beauty that, make INFO: Tel. Eccolo, no mistake, will skyrocket your popularity on Istagram and will give you a ton of “likes” on Facebook. Which, as well as convincing you that in a fairer world there would be photographic evidence, you will be safe in the knowledge that you will not be put off by the crazy selfies sent by your friends who are proudly roasting by the sun. The truth is that at dusk, the historic town centres take on a timeless beauty, an ancestral and reassuring eternal beauty. No, it’s not the wine talking. There are colonies of abstainers ready to testify that to enjoy a late afternoon walk in Lecce’s historic centre or in any other area in Greek Salento or low latitudes of “Specchia” or “Finibus terrae di Leuca” can give you the same intense emotive experience. The artisans who craft paper, local stone and ceramics are well aware, that in this emotional whirlwind, caught between the temptations of drink and the high probability of an ice-cream, cannot wait to explain what a “sponzafrisa” is and how it should be used. There is no one more sociable than a craftsman who is teased about the nature of their creations, and there’s no craftsman who is unable to explain what a “sponzafrisa” is and simultaneously sell a terracotta Fischetto (a highly decorated and elaborate whistle) at the same time. And the wonderful thing is, you still don’t know, but that Fischetto, will serve as a precious memory of your summer in Salento where you learned to “sponzare le frise”. You’ll find that it’s an excellent purchase, considering it was made on a whim in a whirlwind of emotions! So, between the narrow streets and intricately winding roads of Lecce’s historic center, evening falls. The air is fresh and everything comes into perspective. Beautiful festival lights are lit. Such a vision of glory: a succession of coloured lights installed carefully by finely trained artisans - all at the same distance from one other - imposing structures carved in white wood. It seems that you have travelled back in time. A canopy of lights dominates the church square. The profane and the spiritual live together in harmony as if there were no other alternative. The atmosphere is magical; and not only for the tourists who are sold images from a glossy brochure. It’s a genuine magic that comes from afar, one which unites locals and tourists, belonging to everyone and no one at the same time. It’s in the air! And this is the proverbial moment you don’t ever want to touch, because everything is perfect. But eventually, it happens. It’s just the peace before the storm, because INFO: Tel. And here the magic is all or nothing. How to spend the evening is perhaps the most complicated thing to consider when spending a summer in Salento. You have survived the proverbial nightmare of choosing between the Adriatic and the Ionian, and having been embraced by this afternoon’s beauty, the evening is the moment you deliberate the various options, everyone with their own idea of how is best to spend the evening, and again, a great debate over what to do and where to do it. This is more complex than it seems, because the issue here is not to invent something to do, but to make some sense of the different options in question, which hour after hour are becoming increasingly preposterous: “De lu puercu pri pri”, a zero kilometer-themed dinner, a jazz concert under the stars, a music concert in the piazza, Salento wine tasting, a fish restaurant highly recommended by your cousin the meteorologist. Not to mention the friend who was psychologically scarred after eating “la scapece gallipolina” who now cannot possibly consider a life far away from this magically fried fish dish. It suffices to say much of the indecision as to how to spend the evening derives from the east and the west. But theres no end to the mayhem and everything turns to irreparable chaos when the subject of “what shall we do next?” Is brought up. And it is the beginning of the end! What should have been an enthusiastic comparison of views between friends who want to spend a nice evening together in Salento becomes an argument in pitch darkness with no holds barred. Meanwhile time passes and it seems that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but one by one the options are eliminated until there are only a couple to be taken into consideration in the entire gameplan. They are: on the one hand the “Sacristans” believe that a festival is the best option, especially if it is the “de lu puercu pri pri Montesardo”; the others the wild “pizzica”, those that think it’s immoral not go to a music concert because the tambourine is in their blood (and probably in the car, ready to use in case of emergency) and then this year it will be the end of the world if you do not go together to the “Notte della Taranta” and dance till you drop. At 11 pm still nothing is decided, but in the meantime the many bottles of chardonnay you have all consumed are ma- INFO: Tel. All’interno i barman girano già a pieno regime e preparano cocktail come se fosse l’ultima serata prima dell’apocalisse. Il dj newyorkese di origine maori pompa di brutto in consolle king it difficult to think straight. So, while your “scapece dependent” friend is now in the midst of an abstinence crisis, think about what you wanted to do, the festival which would have been nice to go and the wonderful “pittule” you wanted to eat, and, in general, experiencing that festive atmosphere. Now you explain how much of a complete bargain that terracotta fischetto bought in the afternoon was and you immediately realise that everything is not so bad after all on this hot summer day. Meanwhile the decisions, accompanied by an abundance of wine are becoming progressively less convincing, until it becomes clear that the discussion on how to spend the evening has already taken up almost the entire evening and although you continue to insist that dancing the pizzica would be a great idea, you declare that you are actually ok as you are, after all it is just as well, because it has been a long day and all in all it is probably not a good idea to challenge fate again. The last bottle of chardonnay white leaves you vowing to yourself that the next day you do everything that you didn’t have the time or strength to do during this long day of tough decisions. And although somewhere in your remote subconscious you know it won’t be possible, you don’t admit this to yourself because at the end of the day you feel extremely lucky not to been caught up in the “scapece” episode. When everything seems to be channeled towards an unconditional, but peaceful surrender, in amongst the fatigue, a friend calls, that nice, very nice friend, who would like to go dancing, but is alone and can’t decide exactly where, perhaps to “Rio Bo” or perhaps the “Praja”, perhaps to “Gwendolyn” or “Blubay”, maybe somewhere, in some club on the beach, where a DJ named: “Where’s My Car” is playing; strangely Italian although New York-born Maori, who creates a “tribal dub step clubbing experience whilst still maintaining a metropolitan edge.” You can’t make head nor tail of this, but for some strange reason you accept and you are again within half an hour of where you though the day would never end: at the entrance of a terrace in a nightclub on the coast with only the prospect of trying to feel part of those famous “night clubbers” who are actually just the same crowd as the “day people” only with tons of gel and a ridiculous amount of perfume and aftershave. As for the rest, everything is normal. Inside, the barman is already running at full capacity and preparing cocktails like it’s the last night before the apocalypse. Oppure, più semplicemente, vi chiedereste l’unica cosa che abbia davvero senso chiedersi in queste situazioni: che vento fa domani? anzi, oggi? console (Almost justifying out loud the increased price of the entrance ticket), thousands of boys and girls enjoying themselves or giving the impression that they are. Take immediate note that overall the skin is covered to a bare minimum. Don’t feel guilty, its horses for courses. When the dance floor takes on that unmistakable smell of changing rooms it is now past sun rise and tomorrow has already been around for some time. It’s time to go. All the good intentions for the next day are finally shipwrecked in the foam of a cappuccino with cocoa, aboard a croissant with cream, consumed with a certain satisfaction in a little bar called Castro Marina. The sun peeps out from the sea, it is the first sunrise of Italy. With the magic of a new born day, there is only room for reconciling, very deep and profound thoughts. No need to talk: words are as superfluous as the last guzzle of mojo to and are done more for duty than for pleasure: every minute should be lived as if it were your last. And exactly at this point, in the midst of night and day, between beauty and fatigue, you realise that if you had a piece of paper and a pen to hand, you would write a poem.
