The confusion on the beaches has been archived along with the queues on the roads and a suggestive Notte della Taranta. Salento now opens the door to a month of truce while the adrenaline rush is fading and the calm after the storm has arrived. Although September is full of tourists, the tourist demand and tourist proposal, as well as the cultural one, is different than that of the central summer months. A tourism more slow, less frenetic, more careful, perhaps even more pretentious, certainly more thoughtful. September evokes images of vines and grapes to harvest, the barrels in turmoil, the smell of must. It’s the month of the Film Fund Festival, where the movies, mirrors of their territories, urge for reflection and sharing. And it’s the month of food and wine tourism and exhibitions, concerts, the magic and wonder of landscapes, enchanted farms and conviviality. The September number of Salento Dove reflects this trend, its values and emotions. 10 | Settembre 2016 At the conclusion of a summer dedicated to cultural initiatives, the city of Copertino continues to propose initiatives and quality appointments. It starts on September 6 with a tribute to Matteo Salvatore, the Apulian storyteller, the father of a whole generation of songwriters, that Italo Calvino called “the only source of popular culture in Italy and in the world of its kind”. Also Vinicio Capossela, accompanied by the Banda Della Posta, Otello Profazio and Vito Signorile, will be part of this event. On 10 and 11 September “I Teatri del Sacro”, which are considered one of the most significant projects of dialogue between theater and spirituality, present two shows at Santa Maria Casole, just outside the town of Copertino, called “Labyrinth” and “For the obediance of the enchantment of brother Joseph.” The kermesse will end on the 19th at 22.00 at Contrada Gelsi with the concert of South Sound System & Baga Riddim Band. 12 | Settembre 2016 15 to 18 September Offf, Otranto Film Fund Festival, returns with its’ eigth edition with the theme “Cinema and territory” in Otranto. It’s organized by the Municipality of Otranto with the participation of Apulia Film Commission Foundation and the Institute of Mediterranean Cultures and the artistic and organizational direction by Luciano Schito. The festival aims to be both a show of the best productions made with the support of Film Fund and Film Commission, and a space for discussion concerning the problems in this field, through the exchange of experiences and the search for common solutions. Eight movies are running for the award of the Adriatic Ionian Movie. Three projections per evening, at 6.00 pm, at 8 p.m and at 10 pm, where the authors and the actors will be present, introduced by critics of national fame. EVENTI Dott. For the second consecutive year, you are the artistic director of this important film festival. Any news compared to previous years? As every year, we have selected films that “speak”, which have something to tell, that make you think. The mission, therefore, is always the same. But this year there will be two new awards: Unisalento Offf 2016, awarded by a jury composed of selected students from the course of Cinema, Photography, Television, Communication Sciences of the University of Salento, and the Critics’ Prize, chosen by critics Luigi Abiusi, Luca Bandirali, Massimo Causo and Antonio Giulio Mancino. “Cinema and territory” is the theme of this year. How is this combination expressed in the chosen films? All the films we have chosen for OFFF are the mirror of their territories. They recount the anxieties, the beauty, the crisis. The Greek films, for example, convey the anxiety and the instability of the economic crisis. They are micro-worlds that reflect the macro-system surrounding us or everyday contexts, in which everybody, consciously or Settembre 2016 | 13 EVENTI Dalla mostra fotografica di Steve McCurry all’OFFF Otranto Fund Film Fest, Otranto si conferma cornice ideale per manifestazioni di livello nazionale ed internazionale. Nel nostro caso, il matrimonio tra tipologia di offerta e pubblico è un connubio perfetto. unconsciously, fight against a monster, the crisis, which attacks the human being. Then there is a Croatian film that narrates ten years, also during the war, through a great female character. And then there are the Italian films that tell the Mediterranean, with the humanitarian and economic crisis. The goal is to make citizens aware about the problems and to express the message that we all are migrant souls, bodies in evolution. From Steve McCurry photo exhibition to OFFF Otranto Fund Film Fest, Otranto consolidates itself as an ideal setting for national and international events. Is there a connection between high quality cultural offers and tourist flows? The choice of September is probably a turistic strategy... The municipality of Otranto aims to offer a different cultural proposal. The Festival setting in September is necessarily addressed to a discerning, interested and aware visitor if compared to tourists in the beaches in July and August. September is a choice to lengthen the tourist season, but also a necessity, in order to accommodate an “other public”. In our case, the connection between offer and audience is a perfect match. Come primo, senza tion, has been noticed by the national and international press. Alessandra, Alex Restaurant is quoted in the best national guide and you are mentioned among the 30 young talents of the world’s food. How is it possibile to reach similar results? With great difficulty. Unfortunately there is yet the mentality that “eating well” is equivalent to “eating a lot.” Our philosophy is completely different, rather than quantity, we focus on quality. Kitchen and service are optimally balanced to provide an excellent proposal, which will be imprinted in the memory of our customers. The true recipe of success is knowing you havn’t acchieved it yet. Every day you should grow and improve yourself. Raw material quality, creativity, innovation characterize all your dishes. There is, however, a recipe that best sums up your vision and that of your restaurant? Regarding the appetizer, the raw fish. Thanks to a light condiment that does not alter its taste, you can bring out the best quality of raw material. For the first dish I have no doubt: the risotto. Apart from the choice of Acquerello rice, which is in my Settembre 2016 | 23 GUSTAVAGANDO dubbio il risotto. Finally, as the main dish, the fish soup, served scaled and filleted. Here, too, it’s important the quality of fish, caught by local divers who go out to sea only for us. Lecce is undoubtedly a tourist city, not only in the summer, but also in the other months of the year. How does the quality of food combine with tourism? The equation tourism - junk food is not true. On the contrary, it is much easier for us to propose ourselves to the tourist, who arrives already aware and informed. Unlike the local customers, the tourist tries, deepens, and chooses with full knowledge. Also, the accommodation structures direct the tourist according to the types of the target, so those who come to us knows that he will find product quality and good service. Il Pupazzismo significa volare tra le bolle, essere leggero (che non significa superficiale), vedere began her carrier almost casually at 24 painting her by now famous eyes on the walls of Salento. By now her version of reality can be seen on the walls of some of the most important metropolis and cities of Italy and the world. She tells us who and what is La Pupazza and what the so called “pupazzism” consist of, all inspiration and creativity. Who is La Pupazza and Eleonora De Giuseppe? Are there any differences between the two of you? The signature la Pupazza originates in 2008 when I started painting the walls of my home town Tricase. With time I’ve realized that the passion of art is so consuming, that the line between la Pupazza and the real me is very thin. I’m born with a fire within so strong that already at the age of six I was painting ceramics in a workshop. In the summer I would be there every afternoon, I liked painting the tiles and I painted so many and so fast that my maestro joked that I could furnish all the kitchens of all the houses of the town. What is “puppazzism”? This funny term emerged when I photographed a known art critic with one of my eyes when he came to see me in my studio in Milan. He was so amused and amazed by this ritual photography where I force my subject to say “La Pupazza isn’t crazy (crazy = pazza), that he said: “you have created something unique, it’s a magic and contagious eye, from today we can say that there is a new artistic current, do you like Pupazzism?”. And I couldn’t help but laugh and say yes. Hai dipinto a Londra, Milano, Parigi, Amsterdam, Sydney. Cosa ti porti dietro del Salento? E cosa ti lasciano invece queste altre realtà? Al ritorno ho talmente tante esperienze e cose nuove imparate che non mi basterebbero neanche 10 valigio- 30 | Settembre 2016 really a blond lady with a white hat (the lady you will meet if you turn your plate of pasta upside down). You sign your work with the symbol of the eye, is it that eye through which you see and interpret reality? Which reality are you recounting and which would you like to recount? The eye is a window facing the world. It is never judgemental but gentle, and I think it prefers to talk instead of observe. I have an extreme need to share my thoughts and ideas, and the eye, more than all the other senses, communicates everything. When I draw it on the walls of the cities of the world I think of it as an extra life in a video game... if you catch it you have a power, a dream. You have been painting in London, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney. What do you bring with you from Salento? And what does these places give you back in return? When I leave on a trip I put the grit and the spontaneous way of doing things which is typical of Salento in my suit case. On the return trip I bring so many experiences and new learnings that not even ten suit cases would be enough... there are great experiences and not so great ones, like that time IL PERSONAGGIO ni...esperienze sia belle che meno belle, come quella volta che mi hanno arrestata per una notte a Berlino per aver colorato un cartellone stradale pubblicitario ormai sbiadito e malandato. I was arrested for colouring a faded and shabby advertising road sign. You have painted the back drop of the Notte Della Taranta, the most important event of the Italian summer. What did this experience mean to you as an artist and as a woman? As an artist I am honoured, I feel like a dinosaur leaving its’ foot print in such an important and awaited event, especially since this was the first edition where they decided to focus on art. I was invited on behalf of the intuition of Gabriella Della Monaca who is a part of this fantastic organisation, and I thank her with all my heart for inviting me. As a woman it has enriched my spirit. Also this year the main theme has been the woman and I am a fan of all courageous women and modern amazones. 36 | Settembre 2016 Since the palaeolithic and from the Messapians to the Roman Empire; from the Middle Ages to the Byzantines and to the Norman invasion, Otranto was a commercial hub and a cultural melting pot: the gateway to the east facing the sea. There are different itineraries in the charming main town of this easternmost place in Italy. The Aragonese Castle, the ancient fortress of the Norman reign, stands out with its majestic walls defending the city against pirate attacks. The imposing structure inspired Walpole in writing the first Gothic novel in European literature. You can roam the castle from the vast halls rich in history which often lend their space to art exhibitions, to the underground tunnels open to those of the public who dares to enter armed with only courage and torches. From the castle you enter the town and walk along the paved lanes, iridescent in the September sunlight. The heart of this town full of history is the Cathedral, built on the ruins of a Paleochristian church, and its floor paved with a mysterious mosaic. Designed by Pantaleone, a Basilian monk, the mosaic represents the Tree of Life, linked to the Sephiroth of Jewish mysticism and interweaving the Arthurian Deeds. During the Crusades, the knights left signs of their passage in form of seals and Gnostic symbols in the mosaic, which are to this day still a subject of research for historians and scholars. The invasion of the Turks and the sacrifice of the 800 martyrs, whose relics now rest in the cathedral, has marked the history of the town, and descending into the crypt you loose yourself in an surreal atmosphere amplified by 70 columns and arches. 38 | Settembre 2016 The second itinerary winds along from Porto Badisco. Here you’ll find the Cave of the Deer, rich in finds and cave paintings from the neolithic. When you reach Punta Palascìa, the easternmost point of Italy, you can experience a particular phenomena: The sea takes the colour of the sky and the horizon disappears; the only point of reference is the light house, white and firm. Further ahead the lake of bauxite presents you with an explosion of colour: the soil is glowing red with the mineral that was once extracted here and lends to the vegetation and the water that has settled in the quarry, an almost unnatural green. Attualmente l’Associazione conta 30 soci, tutti scalatori. 48 | Settembre 2016 “In the vibrant and free climbs on the rocks tormented in the long and mute conversations with the sun and the wind, with the blue, in the tired sweetness of delicate sunsets, I rediscovered my serenity and tranquillity. The same man can be left wing in politics and in his opinions of everyday life, but right wing in his dressing style or vice versa. But what are they putting inside? Wallets for sure, certainly the mobile phone, car keys, house keys, office keys - everything stored orderly in their designated spaces. Actually you might ask yourself how they ever managed without it... On the bright side they nolonger ask the women to carry their things in their purses.. But I do wonder when pants with pockets will come back into fashion?
