On the occasion of Expo 2015
and of the opening of the
new Prada Foundation,
My Art Guide Milan 2015
inaugurates a new My Art
Guides series dedicated to
exploring both established
and new destinations for
contemporary art.

We bring life to
your projects
The agreement between Expo
and La Biennale to anticipate
by one month the opening
date of the most important
international art exhibition,
will surely bring many art
lovers to visit Milan before or
after their trip to Venice. This
is why we decided to focus the
first edition of My Art Guide
Milan on an exploration of
the city through the lens of
contemporary art.
The first part of the Guide
presents a description of the
city art spaces also including
the artists working in Milan,
while the second part offers
an overview of the design and
fashion events for 2015.
As Milan is one of the world
capitals of design and
fashion, one chapter of our
Guide focuses on Design
and Fashion Clues, with the
museum directory including
the Vico Magistretti and Achille
Castiglioni Foundations where
the works of the two masters of
design history are displayed.
www.lightboxgroup.net
The Milanese art season will
be quite a long one this year,
encompassing the highly
anticipated opening of the new
Prada Foundation and the The
Great Mother art exhibition
curated by Massimiliano Gioni
due in August.
Expo continues until
November, so please keep in
mind that all the art events
that could not be listed in this
paper guide will be available on
line and through our app. www.

Enjoy exploring Milan!

Contemporary Applied Art.
An Interview to Italo Rota
Simone Mosca: How
contemporary is Milan?
Italo Rota: Milan is a city where
art can become an applied idea,
a city where art and design
mix and interact in galleries
and foundations. Milan is a
milestone of the extended
Grand Tour stretching from
Kassel to Venice. Other cities,
such as London or Hong Kong
for example, are contemporary
by definition. Milan too is
essentially contemporary, but
not so sector-based.
Simone Mosca: Milan’s
flair for design could be
confusing.
Italo Rota: Yes, I still think that
it must be hard for newcomers
to figure out what Giò Ponti
really achieved as an all-round
artist and craftsman some
decades ago. But he was a
quintessentially Milanese
character, probably the best key
figure for us to understand the
young artists based in Milan
today, working on the thin
line between art and design, a
narrow path unravelling in the
gigantic art installations and
in the temporary windows of
many independent art spaces
and galleries — a scene that is
growing thanks to those private
citizens who, particularly in
Milan, exceed expectations by
contributing money and ideas.
Simone Mosca: What are
your thoughts on Milan and
the Expo challenge?
Italo Rota: Milan is made of
the people who live there,
and I’m sure these people will
transform this Expo — the
first after the dawn of the net
age — into an extraordinary
experience. This Expo will
be more about living the city
and less about virtual reality.
Welcome to a real city made
of life.

YOUR COMPASS IN
MILAN
Home of Italy’s stock exchange, Milan stands in the
midst of northern Italy as the capital of a rich industrial
district. But the city’s name is also well known far and
wide as the signature brand for Italian good taste. It’s
not a matter of wealth, nor a matter of beauty. It’s more
a matter of flavour. Milan is like an exquisite recipe
in which traditional ingredients flawlessly blend with
new ones. Twentieth-century architectural and art
avant-gardes bloomed around the historical heritage of
Leonardo Da Vinci, while in recent years, the sparkling
fashion and design scene converted several old working
class neighborhoods into exciting new areas filled with
creative art spaces, whose results are still unexpected.
It’s no surprise that Expo 2015 is now exploring the
future of food. It seems the icing on the cake, the best
way to add even more spices to Milan, the city that
never stops cooking itself. Contemporary art has traditionally been one of the city’s main ingredients, but
the arrival of new inspiring landmarks makes it clear:
Milan stands in the midst of northern Italy and can
now have its say, beaux art speaking, along with Turin
and Venice. You will find below the main areas of the
city in which contemporary art is present and growing:
Centro, Ventura-Lambrate, Porta Venezia, Garibaldi-Isola-Sarpi, Navigli Ticinese, Porta Romana.
CENTRO
Map M01 – M02
A pivotal area, “il centro” is a big circle enclosed in
”circonvallazione,” a blurry name the Milanese people

37
have given to the boulevards that used to be Milan’s
thick-walled borders when the city came under Spanish control in the 17th century. Nowadays it’s crammed with hotels, offices and crowded luxury shops.
Main fashion and design boutiques are clustered in
an omnium-gatherum of historical buildings modelled
through the ages after several different decorative
styles. In spite of this eclectic effect, all seems to pull
together, suiting the city’s celebrated genius for a
restrained elegance.
Nearby the Duomo, the popular Milan’s gothic
cathedral, the 18th century Palazzo Reale hosts every
year several major public modern art exhibitions.
By its side, the fascist Palazzo Arengario, sprout in
1936, is now the Museo del 900, which hosts a striking
collection of the most important 19th century Italian
artists. Piazza del Duomo is connected to piazza della
Scala by the majestic double-arcade of the Galleria
Vittorio Emanuele. Here obviously resides the world
famous opera house La Scala, in front of which Banca
Intesa shows its broad modern art collection at Le
Gallerie d’Italia. Pinacoteca di Brera is another capital
modern art museum, placed in the Brera district where
personalities such as Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana spent their bohéme. Other rich sets of modern and
antique masterpieces are displayed at Museo Poldi
Pezzoli and at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.
PORTA VENEZIA
Map m03 – m04
A charming edge of Milan, this area’s suggestions
range from the neoclassical buildings of via Palestro
(home of PAC that, at the side of Milan Modern Gallery,
38
Your Compass in Milan
is the city’s major public contemporary art space)
to the almost Paris-looking surroundings of piazza
Oberdan. Here’s an intriguing tangle of liberty and
belle époque marks. Via Tadino’s major historical
institution is Fondazione Marconi, which treasures
and displays collected works of praised Italian
and international artists. No less so is Fondazione
Mudima, which opened in 1989 as the first Italian
foundation promoting contemporary art. Among
many, you’ll find galleries such as Raffaella Cortese
and Room, which, alongside independent spaces like
Le Dictateur, qualify the neighborhood as an art’s
stronghold.
GARIBALDI-ISOLA-SARPI
Map M05 – M06
Here and there, just in time for Expo, Milan has
undergone some great changes, as the new Porta
Garibaldi and Porta Nuova skyline shows. Under
these skyscrapers lies a vital crossroad between
the glossy fashion town, whose outpost is Corso
Como 10, and a city where the gentrification is still
an ongoing and promising process. Not so far from
Brera, art offering includes Kauffman Repetto Gallery
and Photology.
At the Sarpi side, the famed Chinatown, Fabbrica
del Vapore is a remarkable epicentre of brand new
ideas, a gigantic 19th century plant hosting today
some art supporting centres, like Docva and Viafarini.
Moving to Isola, Spazio O’ is an art NGO promoting
experimental and diverse art forms. Lia Rumma
Gallery, a cornerstone of contemporary art in Milan,
found its place alongside of Fonderia Battaglia, a still

working foundry where bronze sculptures are made
using the antique technique of investment casting.
NAVIGLI-TICINESE
Map M07 – M08
Milan’s South West slice is a sentimental memory
book conveying an enchanting image of the past,
when “navigli”, the local traditional waterways, extended throughout the city in the 20th century. Crowded
both by visitors and town people especially at nighttime, the shores of Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese
are crammed with allures, bars, restaurants, bookshops and boutiques. In via Savona and via Tortona
are condensed most of Milan’s creative ateliers. Mc2
and Workbench stand for galleries and independent
spaces, while Museo delle Culture – MUDEC, a brand
new public museum designed by David Chipperfield,
offers an overall glance on the ethnographic art collection once hosted at the Castello Sforzesco.
VENTURA-LAMBRATE
Map M09
Established since early 2000 as a vital place for new
and emerging talents, the Lambrate-Ventura area brilliantly upgraded an old fashioned industrial landscape
into an appealing art-themed milieau. The district is
partly named after Ventura street, which hosts several very famous sites. Noteworthy galleries include
the likes of Francesca Minini and Massimo De Carlo,
Vavassori and Prometeo. Every year, in April, when
the MiArt art fair and Design Week take place, several
Italian and foreign institutions and galleries rent in
40
Your Compass in Milan
Lambrate-Ventura the location for their showcases
and exhibitions. Major openings and collective exhibitions often draw to this neighborhood a crowd of art’s
afficionados.

Here Milan starts to fade into the countryside. That’s
why, it’s no surprise to find here Cascina Cuccagna,
an old refurbished farmstead that has become a cosy
cultural meeting point thanks to its restaurant and
open terrace. After all, fashion too is attracted by this
kind of outlandish locations, and in Porta Romana
Marsèll, a Milan based footwear brand, opened
Marselleria, a three floor space hosting contemporary
art events. Art is likely to be the neighbourhood’s new
flair, considering that against the sky of Porta Romana
now stands Fondazione Prada’s golden tower.

Practice In 1997, Adrian Paci got
to Italy after escaping violent
riots in Albania. Based in Milan
since 2000, Paci has gradually
distanced himself from his
personal experience to treat
collective history, in projects
that put the emphasis on the
consequences of conflicts and
social revolutions, revealing
how identity is conditioned by
the socio-economic context.

The extraordinary exhibition “Islamopolitan” arrives from Sharjah, the small emirate to the
east of Dubai that was chosen
as Islamic Cultural Capital of
2014. Islamopolitan (Islam+Cosmopolitan) is a word coined for
this exhibition, which sets out
May 2015
to examine multiculturalism and
diversity as well as the need to
respect the general context.
An ironic approach encourages
the local and the global in their
philosophies and at the same
time explores the tensions
between the two worlds. The
structure of work and daily life,
religion, architecture, rituals
and decoration have been interpreted in relation to the present
day. Designers of twelve different nationalities present works
that take a contemporary look at
the rituals of an ancient culture,
through the media of furniture, jewellery, photography,
video, art, installations, objects,
upholstery, carpets, fashion,
ceramics and sound.
