Testo inglese The terms multi-robot system, platoon, team, formation, group of robots or vehicles are used in the literature with wide overlap of meaning. In the following, we will adopt the term multi-robot system since it is suited to denote in the most general way both a set of terrestrial, aerial, or marine vehicles and a set of robots that cooperate to achieve a common target. The adoption of a multi-robot system is of interest in many applications, such as exploration of wide areas or environments that are difficult to be accessed by humans (e.g., marine depth or contaminated sites), search and rescue operation (e.g., demining [25] or area cleaning [31]), realization of automated transportation systems, up to entertainment applications, such as team games and competitions. Moreover, in some applications the assigned task cannot be executed by a single robot but can be instead achieved by suitably coordinating multiple robots (e.g., grasping of large, heavy, or limp objects by teams of vehicle-manipulator systems, or the use of two robots to push a sofa [44]). From a general point of view, even single complex robotic devices, such as a vehicle-manipulator system [3] or a robotic hand can be considered as multi-robot systems [15], [27]. One of the first papers concerning multi-robot systems is [38], in which also the local sensing capability of the robot is discussed. Two good papers that attempt a classification and an overview of cooperative control problems for robots are [5], [46]. There is a very large number of approaches and architectures for handling control of multi-robot systems reported in the literature; very often the differences between the algorithms are light and it is difficult to set up a neat classification. At a first sight multi-robot systems can be characterized by looking at: - presence of a centralized versus a decentralized architecture [24]; in the latter case, one might consider if the system is hierarchical [17], [32] or distributed [39]; - differences among the systems' components, i.e., considering if identical robots are used or not; - structure of the communication, ranging from absolute absence of robot communication [20], to one-way communication of each robot to a supervisor [4], [10], to full inter-vehicle communication [42], [43]; - use of behavioral models of the other robots composing the system [19], such as, e.g., in the case of team games where this approach can enhance effectiveness of the action. A first problem to be solved is motion planning of the system, aimed at motion coordination of multiple robots sharing a common space [29], [40], [34]. This problem, which includes that of controlling distribution of the vehicles according to a formation of assigned geometry, is generally dealt with by geometric approaches [4], [9] or by behaviorally-based approaches [6]. In the framework of motion planning is exploration of a region [13], [45] or control of a platoon of cars in automated freeways and aerial traffic control [36]. During an exploration task the possibly available redundancy of sensory data can be suitably exploited [28]. In the autonomous motion of a multi-robot system within an unstructured environment, control techniques based on sole proprioceptive sensory feedback cannot guarantee proper task execution, in general. Among the heteroceptive sensory data that can be used for control purposes, a major role is played by visual data; in this case, however, an efficient extraction of the relevant features needed to the feedback closure must be ensured [16]. In a more general sense, the use of heteroceptive sensors is made necessary to overcome lack of data needed to planning and to face unplanned events (e.g., missing or incomplete map of the environment, presence of obstacles, moving humans in the workspace, misplaced objects in the environment). Therefore, an important goal to be reached is the realization of navigation systems operating in real time, based on available sensory data about MIUR - BANDO 2004 -6- PARTE II , Ministero dell Istruzione, dell ,Università e della Ricerca the status of the environment [2], [12], [23], [26], [37]. Other methodologies needed to autonomous operation in unstructured environments are those related to the localization of the vehicles composing the multi-robot system [11]. To the purpose, the development of filtering techniques to process sensory data is needed [21]. On the other hand, fusion of different sensory data can be exploited to build maps of the environment [1], [8], [22], [30], [35]. Recently, techniques for simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) are under development [14], [18]. Besides the development of new control methodologies, it is also of major interest in the applications the design and the experimental validation of suitable control architectures [33], lately with special emphasis on internet-based telecontrolled systems [7], [47]. In particular, the choice of a specific hardware/software architecture must satisfy the minimum requirements to guarantee both inter-vehicle communication and communication to the supervisor; therefore, strong limitations may be experienced in case of porting of some technique to multi-robot systems with many vehicles. Another issue of major interest in the applications is the development of specific fault-tolerant control techniques. In the case of multi-robot systems it is desired to guarantee accomplishmento of the given task even in case of loss or breakage of one or more components of the team [41]. 2.4.a Riferimenti bibliografici [1] F. All'interno di tale tema, UNICAS si occuperà principalmente di sistemi multi-robot composti da squadre di veicoli autonomi. Testo inglese In the framework of the project PICTURE, the Research Unit of Cassino (UNICAS) carries on both the scientific coordination of the Research Program and coordination duties for the research activity under the TEAM topic, to which the Research Units UNIGE, UNIPI, POLITO, and UNIVPM also cooperate, as detailed in Model A. Within the TEAM topic, UNICAS will mainly focus on multi-robot systems composed by teams of autonomous vehicles. The research objective of UNICAS under the TEAM topic is the development of new coordinated motion planning techniques and new navigation strategies for multi-robot systems in unstructured or partially structured environments. Particular attention will be paid to the link with related topics developed in the PICTURE project, with specific reference to multi-sensory control techniques for mobile robots (MULTI topic), to coordinated control of vehicle-manipulator system (VMS topic), and to their possible application in underwater environments (UNDW topic). To experimentally validate the developed methodologies, the use of different robots and autonomous vehicles in unstructured or partially structured environments (e.g., laboratories, corridors, courtyards) is planned. A description of the laboratory involved in the experimental activity can be found at the URL: http://webuser.unicas.it/lai In detail, the UNICAS Unit has at its disposal: - 1 mobile robot I-Robot Magellan Pro with differential-drive unicycle-like kinematics, equipped with 16 sonar, 16 infrared, 16 bumpers, radio-ethernet and on board camera; - 1 mobile robot K-Team Khepera with differential-drive unicycle-like kinematics, equipped with 8 infrared and radio-modem; - 1 fixed / mobile vision system with black-and-white and color cameras, and with a Matrox Meteor II multi-channel frame grabber linked to a desktop PC. For a realistic experimental validation of the proposed research topics 6 additional Khepera robots are in purchase order that will MIUR - BANDO 2004 - 10 - PARTE II , Ministero dell Istruzione, dell ,Università e della Ricerca allow at some degree of significance testing of motion planning techniques for a team of autonomous vehicles. In the framework of the TEAM topic, UNICAS will focus on the development of algorithms for motion planning of multi-robot systems which implement behavioral primitives and execute the planned motion in partially structured or unstructured environments. These primitives will regard, e.g., movement of the robots in a given formation and the achievement of path targets, the coordinated exploration of finite areas, or the implementation of reactive behaviors for obstacle avoidance over a given path. Architectures for navigation, guidance and control of multi-robot systems constituted by autonomous vehicles will be investigated, that are based on distributed sensory and decisional functionality over a network of computing resources. In this scenario, each mobile robot hosts on board a set of etheroceptive sensors for navigation (e.g., sonar, infrared, and -on a single robot- a camera) together with a processor which is in charge of handling local control and data exchange (through a radio-link). At the same time, a PC (connected to the network from a fixed station) elaborates additional sensory information (for example, a view of the scene from a ground-fixed camera) by fusing it with that coming from the moving vehicles; then, it elaborates the guidance instructions and send it to the mobile robots. UNICAS will also investigate tolerance of the navigation algorithms for multi-robot systems to events such as failure or loss of one or more vehicles of the team. In particular, it is planned to test in experiments the occurrence of one vehicle stopping during a motion in formation; in this case, the other vehicles should both avoid the stopped vehicle and reconfigure themselves so as to accomplish the mission. UNICAS will also work on the MULTI topic, that is coordinated by POLITO. Within this topic, UNICAS will focus on the study of architectures for exploiting multiple kinds of sensory data (e.g., odometry, proximity, vision) for navigation and control of mobile robots. The sensory data is distributed over the different robots and/or ground-fixed control stations. In particular, the use of both robot-fixed and ground-fixed cameras for different views of the environment is planned. Various architectures will be investigated with respect to the different amount of information to be handled by each robot and/or by ground-fixed station. Another research target is to provide human-inspired behavioral capabilities to the vehicle, aimed at handling changes in the path to be followed, such as, e.g., in the case of a sudden bend. To this purpose, the use of etheroceptive sensors will be adopted to gain robustness of the control system. In the framework of the VMS topic, that is coordinated by UNIGE, UNICAS will focus on the development and validation of control techniques for coordinating the motion of the manipulator and the vehicle. In fact, dynamic control laws taking explicitly take into account the dynamics of the system can yield improved performance while keeping an affordable computational load. Moreover, the intrinsic kinematic redundancy of vehicle-manipulator systems can effectively be exploited to achieve multiple goals at the same time; this will be pursued by developing kinematic control techniques which merge a fuzzy approach to a suitable reformulation of classical task-priority inverse kinematics algorithms. Finally, UNICAS will work on the UNDW topic, that is coordinated by UNIVPM. The research activity carried out under this frame is aimed at investigating application of the planning and control techniques developed for single vehicles and teams of vehicles to robotic tasks to be executed in underwater environments. Schematically, the research will be carried out according to the following phases, each of them lasting six months: Phase 1 (cost 10000 Euro) TEAM - Study of algorithms for motion planning of multi-robot systems constituted by autonomous vehicles. Study of possible faults with specific reference to failure (either loss or fault) of a vehicle in a team. MULTI - Choice and development of the algorithms to be implemented. VMS - Analysis of the performance achievable by existing dynamic controllers and redundancy resolution algorithms for vehicle-manipulator systems. UNDW - Study of possible faults for a single underwater vehicle and of motion specifications for a team of autonomous vehicles. Phase 2 (cost 23000 Euro) TEAM - Analysis of the implementation constraints affecting the chosen algorithms, such as communication delays, anholonomic motion, etc. .
