The idea of quality at Nugget Markets can be seen in their handling of fresh foods. Nugget M arkets is a bout $60 thousand. In other words, while it’s not more exp ensive than rivals, it must comb at this mistaken impression and has b e en doing so via an inventive marketing strategy. The chain has placed in a well position spot in each outlet a kind of big baseball game scoreboard which shows the winners but here in terms of Nugget prices beating those of its rivals. In other words, customers are given scorecards to list the names of 25 of their favourite products such as to compare the prices they pay against those in other chains. They keep their receipts and hand them in together with their scorecards: if Nugget Market prices are higher than those of its rivals, Nugget reimburses the difference ten times over and puts the customer’s name in a lottery that periodically awards a prize of $1,000. The upshot of all this is enormous customer loyalty that, together with quality items on shelves and a lot of customer services, results in a clear segmentation of the local market. The key to success here is how quality is conceived and, as has happened to all the independent US chains that have managed to survive the industry shakeout orchestrated by category killers like Wal-Mart and C ostC o, managed as fresh food, which accounts for nearly 60 % of Nugget Market’s turnover. Staff loyalty It’s worth noting here that the few Italian chains that have discovered Nugget, yet have long been engaged in an obsessive price war, are somewhat sceptical. H aving staff rotate and spray produce items on display during slow hours or at night is surely an added cost. And the special atmosphere generated by a spectacular interior décor of warm wall colours, pot- Nugget Market placed tenth in the Fortune 2009 rankings of the best companies to work for. Sicuramente la rotazione nelle ore morte o notturne del prodotto esposto attuata dagli addetti e la sua nebulizzazione costituiscono un Fresh Point Magazine n.5 – may/maggio 2011 59 isr Usa/Nugget Market gdo Usa/Nugget Market An example of the painting with produce technique.
