The exhibition that sponsors and promotes design culture also has an international dimension. The numerous initiatives held during the event will involve companies, universities, institutions, professionals and the general public, proving that design brings innovation and growth. The personal and theme exhibits focus on different fields of design, exploring the potential of new materials and technologies to be turned into new products. It examines the new forms of expression adopted by designers and highlights the more advanced forms of experimentation used by young designers. The seminars and conferences will focus on the challenges facing design in the global market, looking to see how design can contribute to innovative production as well as modify social relationships and behaviour. Workshops and performances will involve the public in open, interactive spaces. T H E ME Design off limits is the fil-rouge of this 2007 edition. This topic was chosen to highlight one of the contemporary issues that design has to consider when it envisages future scenarios, when it trespasses beyond its own disciplinary boundaries, when it deals with extreme conditions, when it tackles certain key concepts of the visual and material culture of global society and digital communications such as hybridisation, transfer and contamination. V E N UE The main venue of the events held during Week Rd+ is the prestigious Spazio Etoile in Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, in the heart of the old city centre. Exhibitions and performances will be held here and at the Scuderie di Palazzo Ruspali. Conferences, meetings and workshops will take place in the lecture halls of the graduate course in design in Piazza Borghese. Inside the Spazio Etoile Experience Bar will be set up: It is a multifunctional concept, a mixture of art and tasting, a sort of gallery, art-setting, product lunch and tasting experience for the general pubic. Not just a cocktail, but a multisensorial experience, truly an off-limits event to experience and share one’s passion for food, with an eye on design; making the event sophisticated and intriguing. DESIGN IS EVERYWHERE will use other itinerant venues around the city. This event brings together all the other initiatives; it is a network, a journey highlighting the city’s ability to propose a creative design culture using two types of events: DESIGN IN–RETE and HYBRID CULTURES, that take place in different venues and itineraries around the city. Fiat. Design off limits. T h e C e n t e n n ia l o f C h a r l e s E a m e s Week Rd+ celebrates the centennial of the birth of Charles Eames (1907-1978) with an exhibition dedicated to the American designer’s creative genius. Charles and his wife Ray are one of the most productive artistic duos in the history of design. The exhibition has been organised together with Vitra which for over 50 years has produced and sold the Eames’ furniture in Europe and North Africa. The objects, arranged in groups, are accompanied by short descriptions and historical photographs. M a r k F i s c h e r: E x h i b i t- R o c k The exhibition focuses on exhibit and public design using the work of a designer that has created important sets for the concerts of stars like Madonna, the Rolling Stones, the U2, the Cirque du Soleil, the 2006 Olympics in Turin, etc. What distinguishes the group is their use of technology to create special effects as well as traditional forms of exhibit design. A d b u s te rs . c o u n te r c o m m u n i c a ti o n s The exhibition illustrates communication and graphic design along an itinerary that proposes new forms of agit prop, unconventional methods and a form of communication which, on the one hand, (uses a playful and ironic style) to send counter communications and, on the other, provides political messages. A n o n y m o u s D e s ig n The exhibition showcases industrial products that have become part of our daily life; it illustrates their history, why they became popular and discovers who invented them. I n R o m e l i k e a t th e M o M a Objects of Italian design on show at the MoMa were photographed in specific locations in Rome, putting symbolic objects of Italian design (Made in Italy) together in a collage of photographs, products and their history. Several Exhibitions touch on the topic of off limits Design involving experiments that anticipate future scenarios or proposals that combine design and art, design science and technology. Gaial ight | Li ght Treat ment The exhibition, organized by the cultural association “La coda dell’occhio”, presents the new cycle of the works of Gaialight (www.gaialight.com), in which the Italo-American artist develops, Offlimits, her works on products of industrial design for mass consumption. This time, Gaialight applies her artistic techniques (collages, photography, installations) to aids for the disabled: wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, hearing aids, etc. transforming them into post-pop objects. The result is a surprising effect of re-design which paves the way to a new reflection beyond the confines of art/design. In t e r a c t i v e O b je c t 1 .0 The exhibition explores how new technologies interact with objects 6 and our everyday environment.
