ATTIVITÀ DOPO LA VISIONE DEL FILM
Esercizio 1a): Derek’s dream is to open an institute to help disadvantaged
children. He decides to call it the “Derek Zoolander Center for kids who can’t read
good”. There’s a slight problem with this however; with his choice of name, Derek
unwittingly displays his ignorance of English grammar. What should his center be called?
Remember:
Good is an adjective (it modifies nouns)
Well is an adverb (it modifies verbs)
Well can be used as an adjective to mean “in good
health”.
Esercizio 1b): Complete the following sentences using good or well.
1.
2.

Esercizio 2): The characters in the film use a lot of slang and colloquial
language. One word which is used often is “cool” which can have different meanings
depending on the context. Look at the following quotes from the film and rewrite them
replacing the word “cool” with a suitable word or expression to keep the same meaning.
1) Matilda (during the interview): Derek, I just have a few more questions, if that's
okay.
Derek: Cool.
Alternative: _____________________________
2) Derek (after the awards show): I can't stand Hansel!
Derek’s roommate: I know, right? Riding in on that scooter like he's so cool.
Alternative: _____________________________
3) Derek’s roommate (when Derek says he wants to change career): Models help
people. They make them feel good about themselves. They also show them how to dress
cool.

4) Mugatu (talking about Derelicte – the fashion show): It'll be your glorious comeback.
Derek: Sounds cool.

Derek: It's great, Biff. Thank you.
Alternative: _____________________________
7) Derek (to Hansel at the party): You think you're too cool for school. But I got a news
flash for you, Walter Cronkite. You aren't.

8) Hansel (to Derek at the party): Listen to your friend Billy Zane. He's a cool dude. He's
trying to help you out.
Alternative: _____________________________
9) Matilda (at Hansel’s door): And we need a place to hide until we figure this whole
thing out. Derek said this would be the last place anyone would look for him.
Hansel: Yeah, you're cool to hide here

10) Matilda (at Hansel’s house): When I was in seventh grade I was the fat kid in my

Alternative: _____________________________
11) Hansel (telling a story): I was totally fine. I've never even been to Mount Vesuvius.
Olaf (a dwarf): Cool story, Hansel.
Hansel: Thanks, Olaf.
Alternative: _____________________________
12) Hansel (as they’re trying to find the files on the computer): Let's not lose our cool.
Then we're no better than the machine.
Alternative: _____________________________
13) Mugato (when Derek arrives at the show): You had us worried, Derek.
Derek: Everything's cool. I'm really psyched for the show.

ATTIVITÀ DURANTE LA VISIONE DEL FILM
Esercizio 1:
Below you will find the transcripts of each piece of dialogue from the film containing the
answer to each while-watching question.
1) (Scene 1: 00:02:13) Fashion designers: He’s got to be extremely dim-witted. […] A
beautiful, self absorbed simpleton who can be manipulated and moulded like Jell-o*. […]
We need an empty vessel, a shallow, dumb, vacuous moron.
2) (Scene 3: 00:08:40) Hansel: Richard Gere’s a real hero of mine..Sting.. Sting would
be another person who’s a hero. The music that he’s created, I don’t really listen to it,
but the fact that he’s making it, I respect that.
3) (Scene 5: 00:13:49 ) Derek’s friends: Models help people. They make them feel
good about themselves. They also show them how to dress cool and wear their hair in
interesting ways.
4) (Scene 6: 00:17:50 ) Derek: If you knew anything, you’d know Mugatu’s the one
designer who’s never hired me.
5) (Scene 11: 00:24:26 )Derek: All I ever wanted to do was make you proud of me,
Pop.
Derek’s dad: With what? Your male modelling? Prancing around* in your underwear
with your wiener* hanging out? You’re dead to me boy. You’re more dead to me than
your dead mother. I just thank the lord she didn’t live to see her son as a mermaid.
6) (Scene 12: 00:25:52 ) Mugatu: You’ve been around for a long time. I never wanted
anything from you. And now that you’re retired, I can’t have you. And it’s funny how it
switches like that. But now the forbidden fruit must be tasted.
7) (Scene 12: 00:26:41 ) Mugatu: I give you…the Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who
Can’t Read Good.
Derek: What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to
learn how to read if they can’t even fit inside the building? […] The center has to be at
least three times bigger than this.
8) (Scene 12: 00:28:09 ) Mugatu: Let me show you…Derelicte! It is a fashion, a way of
life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores* that make this
wonderful city so unique.
9) (Scene 13: 00:32:45 ) Mugatu: I’m just a kid who wants you to know the truth about
child labour laws. They’re silly and outdated. In the good old days, kids as young as 5
could work as they pleased, from textile factories to iron smelts*. Yippee! Hooray! But
today the age old right of children to work is under attack from the Philippines to
Bangladesh, in China and India, and South America too. But you can help these children
Derek, by killing the prime minister of Malaysia. He is bad.
10) (Scene 14: 00:34:24 ) Derek: Are you having a whack attack*? I saw you this
afternoon dum-dum*.
Matilda: That was last Friday.
Derek: Earth to Matilda. I was at a day spa. Day. D-A-I-Y-E. Okay?
11) (Scene 18: 00:46:12 ) Derek: I’m not an ambi-turner. It’s a problem I had since I
was a baby. I can’t turn left.
12) (Scene 19: 00:50:00 ) J.P Prewitt: Male models are genetically constructed to
become assassins. They’re in peak physical condition. They can gain entry to the most
secure places in the world. And most important of all, models don’t think for themselves.
They do as they’re told.
13) (Scene 20: 00:52:50 ) Matilda: Derek has been brainwashed to kill the prime
minister of Malaysia. […] And we need a place to hide until we figure this whole thing
out. Derek said this would be the last place anyone would look for him.
14) (Scene 23: 01:04:53 )Archie: Apparently the guy was the original guitar synth
player for that band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but he got kicked out before they hit it
big with that song “Relax”.
*jell-o= a cold sweet transparent food made from gelatine.
*to prance around=to move quickly with exaggerated steps so people will look at you.
