About us
A STORY…OF SOLIDARITY
Started in 1968, with the purpose of actively and
directly participating in international cooperation and
humanitarian aids.
…OF ENGAGEMENT
constantly aiming at concurring to the improvement
of weaker communities’ life conditions, in the
defence of primary rights and in support of those
wishing for a World of democracy and peace.
...OF PARTNERSHIP
with hundreds of partners, with whom we gained
and refined our ability to identify, elaborate and
realize projects aiming at sustainable development
in disadvantages countries or stricken by severe
environmental and humanitarian disasters or wars.
...OF NETWORKING
To foster the quest for solutions and strategies to be
shared within the international cooperation and to
improve the quality of field actions, COSV adheres
to several networks – being often among the prime
movers – that promote the dialogue and the
collaboration among different actors.
Projects
During the years, Cosv has managed projects in
several sectors: from the more traditional ones, such
as health, vocational training, agriculture, primary
education, protection and environmental
sustainability, to the increasingly complex projects:
the launch of small and medium-sized enterprises
and cooperatives, capacity building of public
institutions and those created by local civil society,
the protection of human rights, environment, habitat
and land management for functional rehabilitation of
basic public services (hospitals, schools, community
centers). We have also learned to deal with
humanitarian aid and emergencies (environmental
and social) and with the security problems that these
interventions impose to address.
COSV works in several different sectors, but identify
itself in a unique intervention procedure and in shared
purposes: encourage local people participation,
avoiding mechanisms of economic and technical
dependency; improve life conditions for the weakest
groups such as women, elderly and children; create
conditions to permit local sustainability of the
intervention, once the external funding is closed;
enhance local knowledge and culture, harmonizing
economic and social development.
In some countries we work from decades, as in
Mozambique, Bolivia, Ecuador, Zimbabwe. In others
we have intervened in more recent times, as in
Lebanon, Syria, Sri Lanka and Peru. Always and
everywhere we have tried to comply with our guiding
principle: respect and working together with our local
partners, the only real actors of their future.
PROJECTS LAUNCHED IN 2010: 44
Human resources: a precious patrimony
In more than 42 years of activity…
At least 20.000 people have been employed to carry
out our projects. Every year COSV employs at least
30 cooperators (expatriate personnel) and 730 local
collaborators.
In Italy...
All expertise being the same...
We prefer to employ local personnel rather than
expatriates. A strategy that rises form several
choices, both ideological and practical, such as the
certainty to guarantee the maximum continuity and
stability of the accomplished activities on behalf of a
sustainability that otherwise would rely on external
factors too much.
trainings and prop moments.
In the two offices of Milan and Rome, expert
operators guarantee the best management of all the
activities thanks to an accurate and regularly
reviewed organizational analysis, and to constant

Cosv...
is this living network of employees, collaborators, supporters involved in the life and activities of the association.
This is our main resource: men, women, people with great experience and young people beginning their working
career, friends and supporters who have found, in our projects, the opportunity to directly contribute to the
realization of their ideals.
The Italy project
Bring in our country unknown cultures; stimulate the
debate on the issues of cooperation and solidarity;
promote meetings and dialogue among civil society,
institutions, politics, enterprises and universities to
describe and draw new, possible paths for an
equitable and sustainable development: this is the
main thrust of our activities in Italy.
We believe that such an onerous commitment shoud
be managed in partnership with other NGOs and this
is the reason why, during the years, we worked for
the formation of synergies and networks with different
no-profit subjects willing to share this effort: Link 2007
finds its origins in this networking process.
Cosv activities in Italy have been characterized by
innovative and original approaches, that allowed us to
experience new forms of communication and opened
important spaces of reflection and dialogue.
Cosv organized indeed big exhibitions showing other
arts and cultures and conferences within the project
“Dialoghi in cammino”; and it explored new
cooperation and solidarity common grounds between
public and private, profit and no-profit sectors, as well
as delving into co-development and environment.
The aim is to approach geographically distant culture,
that should positively interact and influence each
other, to create a common culture of hospitality and
tolerance. This is the only possible deterrent to
conflicts, intolerance and exclusion.
Cosv activity in Italy has always been particular for its
researches, debates and awareness campaigns in
the field of policies of cooperation, Italy’s role in
foreign policy and some major issues that
characterize the current historical moment.
In collaboration with Link2007 documents and
dossiers collected in the series “Dialoghi in
cammino”, as well as public initiatives of discussion
and dialogue, have been published.
To build a strong and concrete consensus for the
poorest populations and the victims of humanitarian
crisis, Cosv organizes awareness and fund-raising
campaigns.

Objectives and results
The project aims to support the social and economic development of the migrants from morocco living in Italy and of their
region of origin providing training and information on investment possibilities.
The project idea come from the Arab community living in Milano (mainly from Egypt and Morocco) that more and more is
requesting information and training on the possibilities of investing in their Countries of origin. In Milano, the relationship with
traders, entrepreneurs and Arab associations (in particular Al Ouissal association) showed the need of many of these actors
of re-investing in their Countries and finding viable opportunities on which focusing the money they regularly send back
home.
A feasibility study has then been run in Morocco in the Tadla Azilal Region, where most of the Moroccan migrants in
Lombardia Region come from. CRI (Centre régional des investissements) in Beni Mellal from several years is running
projects of training on the possibilities of investment in the Region but has never run information campaigns in Italy or Europe
Also the 'Unione degli Artigiani of Milano Province showed great interest in being a project's partner both for the possibilities
of proposing Arab investment in Italy as well as for training small Arab entrepreneurs in investing in their Countries of origin.

Ayod County is located on the east side of Jonglei State. In this area, health care services are limited and unable to
guarantee an adequate health service to the local population. In the month of October 2009, the Ministry of Health of
Southern Sudan declared an Outbreak of Kala-azar (Leishmaniasis) affecting the Northern part of Jonglei State. In order to
mitigate the emergencies of Kala-azar outbreak in Ayod County, Cosv - thanks to the experience gained in the last 2 years of
activities implementation in the area- started an active treatment/prevention program of Kala-azar in Ayod County. The
program has 4 main objectives: maintaining and improving surveillance for Kala-azar outbreak; strengthening the local
capacity for diagnosis and treatment of Kala-azar; coordinating with other stakeholders for the delivery of drugs and supplies
for diagnosis and treatment; providing basic nutrition access and malnourish treatments in cooperation with UNICEF. The
projects estimates to treat around 200 people, and it will support the whole Ayod Community, composed by 139.287 people.

Activities take place in the cities of Sweida and Palmyra and their surrounding villages. Local youth participate in preserving
rapidly vanishing oral heritage by collecting tales and songs from older generations. Furthermore, archaeological assets are
promoted towards their communities through youth friendly films, and the management, financial and project making
capacities of local partners are improved. Mobile multi-media shows, made with the help of local communities, are shown to
the populations within the targeted areas.
The project achieve the following results:
1.
Strengthen active contributions to society by Syrian citizens', in particular young people;
2.
Targeting marginal and underprivileged populations;
3.
Enhancing capacity building of cultural promoters, through transfer of know-how.

Objectives and results
The project aims to improve the quality and the quantity of the local cheese production, today already done at the Monastry
of Deir Mar Musa.
The Monastry is a focal point for inter-religious and inter-cultural activities, characterized by a strong link with the local
community and by a wide spirit of hospitality. By 2003 the Monastry started a local production of goat cheese in order to
improve thye offer of its hospitality capabilities and to start a process of marketing of the local herdsmen cheese.
This project will improve the standard of the local production in order to access Syrian market and providing a furtehr
opportunity for local economic development.
As far as today the local production is not regulated by standard and is not able to reach a wide market.
A better production system will improve quality and economic possibilities for the involved actors.
Thye project will support the renovation of the building where the cheese is produced, strengthening the link between the
local herdsmen and the Monastry and improving local hospitality offers with a glance also to pass-by tourists.

ITALY PROJECT
DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
ACTIVITIES 2010
GLOBAL EDUCATION: COSV ACTIVITIES IN ITALY
Some of the most important activities of COSV are awareness campaigns and
development education, as demonstrated by a long series of initiatives.
Cosv activities have different aims: to involve people in the initiatives undertaken by the
association; to ease the public approach to cooperation and solidarity projects promoted
by COSV; and mainly to promote a greater understanding of the complex issues related to
cooperation activity.
In this context, and during the last years, we carried out several education, awareness and
information activities. Among them we can mention: "Altre Arti", a program of exhibitions
on world cultures and arts (painting, sculpture, photography, crafts ...) hosted in
prestigious locations: Castello Sforzesco and Palazzo Reale in Milan; museums of
Bologna, the public galleries of Trieste, Rovereto, Verona and Rome. “Altre Arti” has been
hosted also in unconventional places such as the theater Giorgio Strehler in Milan or Villa
Piccolomini in Rome.
“I quattro motori d’Europa", an interregional network of NGOs and local institutions
created to inform and sensitize public awareness of the MDGs in four European Regions:
Lombardy, Rhone-Alpes, Baden Wuttemberg and Catalunya
“Dialoghi in cammino", a project that for the first time managed to achieve a specific
space for researches, studies, discussions and awareness campaigns on the issues of
cooperation, Italy's role in foreign policy and some of the major issues that characterize the
current historical moment. Within the many conventions, working groups and seminars
organized, "Dialoghi" has always drawn a wide audience of scholars, researchers, NGOs,
civil society and institutions. It has published and distributed a collection of dossiers in
hundreds of copies, and it has built opportunities of dialogue among different actors in Italy
and abroad.
Two areas of research within the project “Dialoghi in cammino" have been particularly
successful for their innovative approach and they are considered interesting also for the
future agenda: the exploration of new areas of cooperation and solidarity between "public
and private", "profit and no-profit”; and the effort to define and set the new profession of
the operator of non-governmental cooperation.
Through “Dialoghi in cammino" an important partnership has been established with a
number of important international research institutions on Poverty and Hunger (IFPRI,
Concern Worldwide; Welthungerhilfe) to publish and divulgate the italian edition of the
Global Hunger Index "(2008-2009-2010).
”Reti di solidarietà" is a project promoted by the Colomba Association (a network of over
100 non profit associations of Lombardy Region engaged in international solidarity) and
other associations. The objective of the project is to promote and encourage the
relationship between NGOs and local institutions, territories and civil society and between
Italian and European regions; to increase the effectiveness and the scope of cooperation
activities; to promote greater awareness about good practices of NGOs in international
cooperation; to encourage greater and more effective coordination and partnership with
regional and interregional non-state actors.
Moreover, in the past three years Cosv has organized many “innovative” initiatives in
different cities with the aim of informing and debating about Cosv projects in the world.
Theater, video-fiction, publishing, games, as well as new media and new languages have
been used to talk about environment, health, responsible tourism, culture and creativity.
Finally, among other activities in Italy, sensibilization and fund raising campaigns are
important for COSV to build a strong and concrete consensus for the poorest populations
and the victims of humanitarian crises.
Cosv believes that such an onerous commitment shoud be managed in partnership with
other NGOs and this is the reason why it worked for the formation of synergies and
networks with different subjects willing to share this effort: Link 2007 finds its origins in this
networking process.
Cosv activities in Italy have been characterized by innovative and original approaches, that
allowed us to experience new forms of communication and opened important spaces of
reflection and dialogue.

Association, Najdeh and Samandal - che oggi
lanciano «Let’s Comics!
2010» si inserisce all’interno di «A comic competition on multicultural

"Youth and Heritage".
concreto.
I finanziamenti.
and Heritage" sull'archeologia locale: "Salma, friend of the ruins" e "Adnan, friend of the ruins".

Sweida, Syria
Youth and Heritage kicks off after
seven months of hard work
If you had entered what is locally known as the “Small
Roman Theatre” in Sweida on
Saturday the 2nd of October at
6 p.m., you would have the ancient ruin awhirl with song and
dance and packed with locals
and visitors from Damascus,
Beirut and even foreign countries. They all came to attend
the inauguration event of the
‘Youth and Heritage’ mobile
multimedia exhibit on the culture of Sweida.
MASA KATEB, BALADNA
For the first time in 1,500 years,
and after 14 years of being excavated, the theatre was brought to
life with a play on the civilizations
that rose and fell in Sweida, a traditional dance performance, and
the premiere of a cartoon film on
local archaeology.
The theatre was not the highlight
of the evening however. The youth
who took part in the performances
were in the spot light.
‘Youth and Heritage’ activities take

Delegation to Syria said “Through
the EU Delegation’s annual
Cultural Calls for Proposals, it has
co-funded 26 projects in Syria since
2004. Among these 26 projects,
‘Youth and Heritage’ emphasises
the importance of young creative
energy in bringing cultural heritage to life. T
Today we will see the
innovative and attractive results
when young citizens are active in
their own societies.”
The inauguration included a play,
which was written,
directed and acted by young volunteers in the project. The play, which
was wildly applauded by the audience, represented the different
civilizations that passed through
Sweida from the Nabattians to
recent history to the Great Syrian
Revolution that started in Sweida.
Al-Adiat Association contributed
a traditional dancing performance with music playing live, and
at the end, a full theatre sat for
the screening of the cartoon film
“Salma, friend of the Ruins”.
‘Youth and Heritage’ is a project
funded by an EU annual cultural
grant for the year 2010 and supported by the Ministries of Culture
and Transportation. The inauguration event in Sweida of the mobile
exhibit was attended by representatives of all the sponsors, in
addition to the Regional Director
of the Italian organization COSV,
who is overseeing the implementation of the project.
“We are delighted to have verified after seven month of working
directly with youth from Palmyra
and Sweida, that
youth have so much energy in
them and only need a platform
to channel this energy into positive action.” Maya al-Kateb,
project coordinator of ‘Youth and
Heritage’ told Baladna. “If they
didn’t care about their culture
and sharing it with others, they
wouldn’t have been committed
with us for such a long period of
time, nor contributed that much
of their time and energy to the
project.”
The program joined forces with
the local branches of the Students’

clean the theatre and prepare it for
the inauguration event. “Reviving

week.
The bus was painted by local children and took three days of hard
work. The painting was supervised
by one of the volunteers, Yara
Jarbou, a fine arts student. “This is
an amazing experience to me” she
told Baladna. “Working with children has been inspiring and this
whole project is just more than I
can wish for.” Yara also drew the
illustrations in the booklets of
Sweida and Palmyra.
“This success is not the end of our
journey. It is the start of a new
phase in which we will do better
work by learning from our mistakes,” al-Kateb said in live interview on Melody FM (97.9 hz) “Next
we’re thinking -and working- to
repeat the project in Aleppo,

"Adoro illustrare i miei
Quattro associazioni, italiane e libanesi.

secondo me la sta già scrivendo), è arrivato negli Stati Uniti mentre George Lucas
stava iniziando la sua avventura di Guerre
Stellari, insomma Star Wars. E al trentenne Nelson, Lucas in persona chiese come
si potevano rendere spettacolari le spade
che comparivano nel film, come avrebbe
potuto fare per farle diventare quelle che
hanno illuminato le fantasie di milioni di
spettatori in tutto il mondo.
«Mi chiesero di risolvere il proble-

ma in un mese. Io risposi che forse ce la
potevo fare.
In
Rimasero entusiasti
dell’effetto quando lo vedemmo

insieme in sala proiezione.
quelle spade potevano davvero sembrare
vive».
Certo, anche il suono è fondamentale! Ma
poi sei rimasto a lavorare alla Lucas?
«No.
no. In fondo Star Wars era appena uscito e
spesso sentiamo parlare sui mezzi
d’informazione per notizie di quelle
brutte, che comprendono parole come: bombe, guerra, kamikaze, missili, ecc. ecc. Insomma, ci spostiamo a
Beirut, nel Libano, in quella striscia
di terra mediterranea che prosegue
verso est la linea tracciata sul mare
dalle spiagge di Israele. Natural-
scorso è stata inauguarata, all’interno del

Insomma: i fumetti realizzati all’interno del progetto A comic competition on multicultural societies, finanziato dalla

vitamine e sali minerali, perché mangiano poco e

Africa subsahariana e in Asia meridionale. I dieci
In
