Sono un uomo che ha spinto
gli innovatori ad innovare.
Per questo ho fondato un laboratorio
di fabbricazione digitale dove i saperi
si mischiano l’uno con l’altro, i designer
lavorano con i fisici, e i fisici dialogano
con i filosofi e gli imprenditori.
Nel mio futuro vedo la robotica, credo
che oggi le macchine siano pronte
ad assomigliarci. Il prossimo passo
della tecnologia sarà replicare noi
stessi.
Il modo in cui affrontiamo il viaggio
rappresenta molto di noi: nel mio
zaino ideale porto sempre due cose,
immancabilmente, il mio portatile
e un libro, sono la sintesi del mio
mondo e mi permettono di esplorare
mondi paralleli vastissimi.
Sono innamorato della materia prima;
ci sono delle rocce, delle pietre,
dei vetri, materiali di cui ho la necessità
di avere quasi un contatto fisico.
Quando tocchi alcuni materiali e senti
che quella materia è “buona”, ecco,
questo credo che sia lo stile:
“toccare atomi buoni”.
Trasformare l’artigianato italiano
è una grande sfida: oggi c’è un nuovo
modo di fare artigianato, dove le mani
rimangono quasi pulite, non abbiamo
più i calli, ma è la mente che lavora
insieme alle mani.
Un giorno questa innovazione
diventerà la nostra tradizione.
I am a man who has pushed innovators
to innovate. This is why I set up
a digital fabrication lab, where
different knowledge blends together:
designers work with physicists,
and physicists exchange information
with philosophers and entrepreneurs.
I see robotics in my future. I believe
that today machines are ready to
resemble us. Technology’s next step
will be to replicate us.
The way in which we deal with
travelling represents us to a large
degree. I unfailingly always carry two
items in my ideal rucksack: my laptop
and a book. They are the gist of my
world and allow me to explore vast
parallel worlds. I am in love with raw
material.
There are rocks, stones, pieces
of glass and materials of which I need
to have almost physical contact.
When you touch some materials
and feel that that material is “good”,
well then, I think this is what style is:
“touching good atoms”.
Transforming Italian craftsmanship
is a huge challenge. Today there is
a new way to ply the handicrafts trade,
where your hands almost never get
dirty and we no longer get calluses,
but rather, it is the mind that works
together with the hands.
One day this innovation will become
our tradition.

quando ha lasciato la sua Milano
per rispondere al richiamo irresistibile
della montagna. E non si è più fermato.
Alpinista, freerider, preparatore

Io sono un cacciatore di sogni.
La mia passione per lo sci nasce
da ragazzino, mi è stata trasmessa
dai miei genitori e poi è stato tutto
un percorso naturale.
Ogni montagna ha un suo “design”
particolare: ci sono montagne più
verticali, che impressionano al primo
sguardo; montagne più dolci,
che salgono meno verticali rispetto
al cielo, ed entrambe possono
racchiudere in sé bellezze e pericoli.
L’ispirazione credo sia tutto: parte
da un sogno, da un desiderio,
da qualcosa che ti ha impressionato,
dalle foto e dai video che hai guardato,
o semplicemente dai racconti che hai
ascoltato.
Viaggiare mi piace da morire:
è conoscere, allargare la propria mente
e le proprie idee. Non immagino la mia
vita senza un viaggio, può essere
più o meno estremo, di piacere
o di lavoro, ma deve necessariamente
fare parte di me.
Ad una persona che ha stile viene tutto
quasi naturale; non è impostata, non è
costruita. È così, punto.
Anche quando scia: ci sa fare in salita,
nella scalata, in discesa, sembra quasi
che il gesto sia una danza, che tutto sia
semplice anche se in realtà non lo è.
Più è fluido il gesto, più c’è dietro
un lavoro, una conoscenza motoria
e un’altissima capacità tecnica.

with skiing when I was a young boy.
My parents handed it down to me,
and then it took its natural course.
Every mountain has its own special
“design”. There are more vertical
mountains that make an impression
upon first glance; there are more
sloping mountains that rise less
to the sky less vertically; and both
can contain beauties and dangers.
I believe that inspiration counts
for everything. It starts from a dream,
a desire, something that has made
an impression on us. They might be
photos or videos we have seen,
or simply stories we have listened to.
I adore travelling. It is learning,
and broadening one’s mind and one’s
ideas. I can’t even imagine my life
without travelling. It can be more
or less extreme, for pleasure or for
business, but it is by necessity a part
of me. Everything comes almost
natural to a person who has style.
It is neither planned nor construed.
That is the way it is. Period!
Even when you ski. You know how to
go up in the climb.It almost seems that
your movements are a dance, that
everything is simple even if in reality
it is not. The more fluid the movements,
the more work you have done
and the more motor knowledge
and high technical capability you have.

Sono una persona che ama
cercare e imparare.
La mia storia parte dalla periferia
di Milano passando per l’Università
di Firenze, dove ho conosciuto gli amici
con i quali ho fondato la mia società.
Ho potuto vedere mondi differenti,
passando dai Paesi in via di sviluppo
per ritrovarmi a Bruxelles o Shanghai,
dove la crescita ha trasformato
le capanne in grattacieli.
La mia professione nasce nel momento
di crisi, affronta il cambiamento
in modo diretto, è nativa del
cambiamento.
C’è una parola che ora va molto
di moda, “resilienza”: è un po’ più
del semplice adattamento,
è la capacità di mutare nel tempo,
mantenendo però un dna costante.
I maestri sono fondamentali, una merce
rara: io li ho trovati nei clienti stessi
e in ogni realtà con cui ho potuto
collaborare.
Lo stile è un codice: da una parte
si tratta di comunicare in modo che
le altre persone possano riconoscere
in te un interlocutore con cui sentirsi
a proprio agio; dall’altro lato significa
non rendersi totalmente neutrali.
Mi sento alla guida del mio viaggio,
sia nella vita professionale che privata.
Cerco di vivere prendendo
delle decisioni che portano con sé
rischi e responsabilità.
È proprio questo che mi emoziona.
I am a person who loves
to seek and learn. My story starts off
from the suburbs of Milan and passing
through the University of Florence,
where I met the friends with whom I
established my company. I was able
to see different worlds by travelling
to developing countries to then find
myself in Brussels or Shanghai,
where growth has turned huts
into skyscrapers. My profession
arose during a time of crisis.
It tackles change directly, and is native
of change.
There is a word that is in style today,
“resilience”. It is somewhat more
than simple adaptation.
It is the ability to change over time,
while however maintaining a constant
DNA. Teachers are fundamental
and a rare commodity.I found them
in the customers themselves
and in every company with which
I had the chance to work.
Style is a code. On the one hand,
it is communicating in a way in which
other people are able to recognise
in you someone with whom they feel
at ease. On the other, it means never

È una storia che nasce un po’ a caso,
con grande spontaneità.
Io sono la quarta di quattro gemelle,
e ho voluto inventare qualcosa di
davvero mio per potermi distinguere.
Ho scelto la strada che sembra più
facile ma che in realtà è la più difficile:
essere me stessa e portare ciò che
sono nel mio ristorante-boutique, dove
mi sento libera di esprimermi.
Il momento che preferisco di un viaggio
è il ritorno a casa, piuttosto che la
partenza, perché ogni volta ritorno
diversa, piena di voglia di fare.
Nel mio mestiere la pazienza
è fondamentale, ne serve tantissima,
bisogna avere anche cura delle cose,
delle persone, dell’ambiente di lavoro:
tutti questi mescolati insieme sono
gli ingredienti dello stile.
Il coraggio di lasciare ciò che si ama
a casa è l’ingrediente necessario
per intraprendere qualunque viaggio.
I consider myself a sunny person
on an endless search for enthusiasm
and happiness. I am unable to stay
with the same thing for too much time.
I very easily become bored and I need
to reinvent myself. My work says
everything about me. If someone were
to ask me what work I do, I would
be unable to answer, but if they were
to ask me who I am, I would answer
that I am my work. The history
of my work started somewhat
haphazardly, and very spontaneously.
I am the fourth of two sets of twins,
and I wanted to invent something truly
all my own in order to differ. I chose
the path that seemed to be the easiest,
but that actually was the hardest:
being myself and taking what I am
into my work, at Gattò, where I feel
free to express myself. My favourite
moment of a journey is returning home
rather than the departure, because
every time I come back I am different
and bursting with a desire to do things.
Patience is essential in my profession,
and a lot is needed. You also need
to take care of things, people,
the work environment: all of these
mixed together are the ingredients
of style. The courage to leave what
you love at home is the ingredient
necessary for embarking on any
journey.

Il mio percorso inizia dalla Sardegna,
che lascio ventuno anni fa
per trasferirmi a Milano.
Oggi mi sento nel mezzo
del mio viaggio professionale:
voglio ampliare ancora la mia
esperienza, imparando qualcosa
che mi migliori anche come uomo.
Il viaggio è sempre stato il mio maestro
di vita: viaggiando conosci nuove realtà
e fai esperienze che ti aiutano
a crescere e diventare uomo.
I consigli di mio padre sono stati
i miei compagni di vita, li porto
sempre con me.
Quello fra tradizione e innovazione
è un binomio che mi rappresenta:
computer e tablet sono due
dei miei “strumenti” indispensabili.
Credo che avere stile significhi essere
eleganti, non solo nel portamento
o negli abiti raffinati, ma esprimendosi
con gentilezza e avendo rispetto
per l’interlocutore. Anche la musica
è stile ovviamente: un pianista
è più elegante, un tastierista è più
ruvido e funk, ma il vero stile risiede
nell’approccio allo strumento, dove
la protagonista assoluta è la manualità.
Nel mio viaggio mi sento più un
guidatore che un passeggero,
così come nella mia musica mi sento
più autore che esecutore, perché penso
e decido da me. Sono sempre stato
l’autore del mio spartito.
My first journey started off from
Sardinia, which I left 21 years ago
when I moved to Milan. Today I feel like
I’m in the middle of my professional
journey. I want to broaden
my experience some more by learning
something that improves me,
also as a man. Travelling has always
been my teacher of life. By travelling,
you discover new worlds and have
experiences that make you grow
and turn into a man. My father’s advice
has always been my life’s companion,
and I always carry it with me.
Tradition and innovation
is a two-word combination that
describes me: computer and tablet
are two of my must-have “tools”. I think
that having style means being elegant:
not only in demeanour or refined
clothing, but in expressing yourself
with courtesy and having respect
for the person you are addressing.
Obviously music is style as well.
A pianist is more elegant, a keyboard
player is rougher and funkier.
But true style resides in the approach
to the instrument, where the absolute
essential element is manual ability
In my travels I feel more like a driver
than a passenger, just like I feel more
like a composer than an executor
in my music. That is because I think
and decide on my own. I have always
been the composer of my score.
