IT La colonne de Joux. The Roman Age. Two settlements of the Gallo-Roman epoch, located on the two sides of the ancient way, create a courtyard delimitated by halls and annexes reserved to draught animals and carts. These refuges (mansiones) were the ancestors of the modern mountain huts or stopover locations. The biggest one measures 67,50 m x 25,50 m and it is coupled with a small temple (fanum), made of a cell (or sacred room) and a peripheric colonnade. This small sanctuary was probably dedicated to the cult of Jupiter, who was invoked to obtain protection during the long and dangerous crossing. The fact on being a place of refuge under divine protection will be perpetuate through the creation of the first Hospice by Saint Bernard of Menthon during the XI century. At about 2.200 meters above the sea level, between the Tarantaise and the Aosta Valley, the Little St Bernard pass lived many moments of glory. The Romans traced here their carriage road that linked Rome to Lyon. Afterwards the followers of Saint Bernard built a Hospice that has offered refuge to pilgrims and wayfarers for a long time. Many signs, sometimes covered by mystery, reveal the traces of the repeated passage of the mankind during the centuries. A rich treasure that is waiting for being discovered. A guided itinerary through this wonderful scenery has been created to reveal the beauty of those places and their history. At the main entrances of the paths there are three parkings from which various itinerary start. They have different lengths (1-3 hours) and they will enable history lovers to discover this important historic place according to their interests and free time. The complete itinerary is a big circular route and lasts approximately 3 hours. By following the system of signs, independently from the chosen route, the path will always come back to the departure point. Have a nice walk EN www.lathuile.it IL COLLE DEL P.S. BERNARDO The Columna Jovis is located at the very top of the Pass, at 2188 metres above the sea level. Its name remembers the names of Jovis ot Jupite, a supreme God that dominated the alpine summits. Jovet, Jouvet, Joux or Jovis were common names to refer to the tops of the Alps. During the Middle Age, in fact, the Pass was called Columna-Iovis. The column, which is about 4,50 metres high, is carved in a monolithic block and it substitutes a statue of Jovis that, according to the legend, was demolished by Saint Bernard once he arrived at the Pass to destroy the symbols of paganism. The stone circle is on the borderline between Italy and France, close to the ancient route that links the Aosta Valley with the Haute Tarentaise. It was discovered during the XVIII century: it is one of the rare megalithic circles of Italy. It is very interesting both from a historical and an astronomic point of view, since it is still analysed and studied to remove some doubts about its function and its dating. The Cromlech, in its actual shape, has a diameter which goes from 2 to 6 metres and is composed by 46 stone put at a regular distance of 4 metres one from the other. It seems to be sure that, since the street went through the Cromlech, an undefined number of stones are not in its original position. The inconfutable element that make historians think that the Cromlech should date back to the beginning of the Copper Age (around the III millennium b.C.) is the discovery of some couples of polygonal or rounded-shaped stones, together with a point of a pedunculate arrow made of yellow chert. This protohistoric monument can be linked to some other megalithic buildings on the Aosta Valley, especially the ones that can be found in Aosta. vi aspetta anche nella stagione bianca FR Tipografia MARCOZ - Morgex Se trouvant à environ 2.200 mètres d’altitude, entre la Tarentaise et la Vallée d’Aoste, le Col du PetitSaint-Bernard connut plusieurs moments de gloire. On the Italian side, a modern road intersects on various points this straight route. Some researches show that there was an ancient communication trench which was 4,50 m wide and delimitated by ditches. It started from the very top of the pass and it diagonally went through the upland to finally reach the Tarentaise valley, by following the right riverside of the Reclus torrent. The first cartographic document about a series of entrenchments dates back to the XVII century. The system, whose aim was to completely bar the roads, was subdivided into two devices: one on the forefront at the Hospice and another one between the Mont du Parc, Theraz, Plan Praz, the Colle della Croce and the Colle San Carlo. A first defence line, essentially based on the trenches outside La Thuile, was established in 1629 by the Savoy Count Carlo Emanuele I, whereas the improvements, the extension of the existing entrenchments and the creation of the forefront device seem to be attributed to the initiative of Tommaso of Savoy Carignano, at the beginning of the fourth decade of the XVII century. The entrenchments at the Little St Bernard pass took part to the following military events many times. Their first use coincide with the war of April 1794, when the French republican troops, conducted by the general Dumas, break through the Piedmontese resistance line at the Pass and finally arrived in La Thuile. On the opposite side, the entrenchments of the Prince Thomas still are the most representative elements of the defensive device created between the Little St Bernard pass and the area at the beginning of the town that brings to the Colle San Carlo. A huge central system made of trenches and curtains for the musketry along the way of the Dora of La Thuile completely blocked the access to the Petosan valley. The small fortress of Plan Praz is located on a plateau in an intermediate position if compared to the Colle della Croce entrenchments. The structure, made of very well conserved dry stones with evident signs of the many modifications, essentially consists of a curtain (whose plan is almost star-shaped) with high slits and barracks (provided afterwards). Finally, field installations or emplacements are distributed all along the way EN that constituted the only connection to the Little St Bernard pass until 1873, when the actual national road n. 26 was completed. The latest defensive system around the Little St Bernard pass was built between the end of the XIX century and the 1940s. A first complex composed by 3 entrenchments was built on the French side, at 3 different altitudes above Bourg-Saint-Maurice, whereas an advance position in the area of the Pass, and precisely at the frontier post, was integrated during the third decade of the XX century through some active and passive defence structures disseminated on the territory.
