TURINESE MUMMIES
(admission €7.50, students €3.50; open Tue to Sun 8:30

kind in the world after Cairo. Do you know why? It was
founded by the Savoys in 1824 after they had bought a
collection from the French consul who had served in Egypt
under Napoleon. The collection was further enlarged thanks
to Turin-based archeologists. It’s well worth a visit...and it’s
not just mummies!

TUSCAN EATING HOUSE
(closed Sundays) The portions are generous and if the food is
not Piedmontese but Tuscan, people of Turin come to ALA for

UNIVERSITY-STYLE LUNCH
(closed on Sunday) PIOLA DI ALFREDO is one of the last of
Turin’s old-style eating places, known as “piole”. Alfredo is
the owner and you can meet him there every day. Sitting
at the rough wooden tables you’ll find university students
who have been going there for 30 years! Ask for the famous
meat-ball and aubergine sandwich. The food is always fresh
and in season and prices are very low. Dinner for only €10.
CHEAPEST COCKTAILS
(Mon to Sat, from the morning to late at night). Music and
drink is the motto of the VITAMINA bar, which during the day
looks like a cozy café where the food is healthy and cheap
but in the evening it becomes one of Turin’s major cocktail
bars. You must try the “Zenzero e guaranà” cocktail.

This is a bizarre building designed by our eclectic architect

made people think that nothing could occupy the area.

OLD FACTORIES PUT TO NEW USE
(Every day) Turin is the city of FIAT: starting from 1950s
until the 1970s it transformed the city calling immigrants
from the South and for decades it dictated the way of
living and working. The FIAT factory LINGOTTO opened
in 1923 and it was the largest car industry in the world
at that time. The factory closed in 1982 and today is
a huge multi-functional centre with: an art gallery
(PINACOTECA AGNELLI, admission €4), on the top floor
with a view of the “glass bubble” and the old rooftop
test track. Next door is EATALY a top quality food lovers’

It’s the official symbol of the town.
In the first century B.C. the Romans founded here
the colony of Julia Augusta Taurinorum, later
simplified into Taurinorum, in order to indicate the
area where the Taurini lived (a local Celtic group).
This name was ultimately simplified into Taurinos
and, finally, into Turin. Tauros = bull.

Corso Marconi will take you from the lively, noisy atmosphere of San Salvario to the green of the VALENTINO park. In
front of you is the VALENTINO CASTLE (its origins date back to the 16th Century) : home to the faculty of architecture. Enjoy a walk in this beautiful park which runs along the riverbank. Stroll through the botanical gardens, the
rose garden or simply follow the gentle slopes and paths of the park. Right in the middle is the BORGO MEDIOEVALE
(Mediaeval village) a complex built in 1884 for the International Exhibition, originally conceived as a temporary
installation but which was never dismantled (like the Eiffel’s Tower in Paris). It’s an imitation of northern Italian
medieval architecture. But it’s faithful and is worth a visit. If you make your way back towards the centre of town,
along the riverbank, you’ll see some low-lying bars: these include IMBARCHINO and FLUIDO, summer venues for
live music, cultural events and open-air screenings. You’ll almost always find people chilling out there, jugglers and
acrobats getting in some practice. Join us: both these places will lend you straw mats to lie down in the grass.

You’re now in the heart of San Salvario and it has everything you need for a perfect night out. There are workshops, ethnic restaurants and shops, and places to have an aperitivo. Look for the crowded BIBERON, where you’ll
find a good selection of rums (including the famous hot rum with honey). Nearby is another must on a night out:
the literary DIWAN café, which is always full of locals. Next you’ll come to the enchanting LARGO SALUZZO. Try
translating the texts written by the parish priest next to the entrance to the church: aren’t they apocalyptic ?! In the
square you’ll also find chairs left purposely for use by anyone....feel free to have a sit.

You’re entering SAN SALVARIO neighborhood, which is a small world inside Turin but it feels like a village where
people know each other. Every day, in piazza MADAMA CRISTINA from 8 to 14 there’s the local market: prices are
not as cheap as Porta Palazzo but the quality is good. If you feel more like a Kebab, take via Berthollet and go visit
Horas. It’s always open and it’s simply one of the best kebab places in town: try the variation with mozzarella. It’s
run by an Egyptian who calls everybody “meridionale” (southerner) “negro” or “clandestino” (illegal immigrant).

A Synagogue, a Mosque and a Waldesian church in the same neighborhood. But it used to be different. Jews for
example were discriminated until 1848. The Mole Antonelliana was originally commisioned by Turin Jewry as a
celebration of their emancipation when the city became the capital of Italy in 1861. However, the Mole was never
used as a synagogue and the project was sold to the city of Turin in order to start again with a smaller project.
That is what you’re standing in front of: the 19th century Synagogue, with its four Moorish-style domes and its
Arabesque facade. Nearby is the Waldensian church (service in English every Sunday morning) the Protestant community which began life in the valleys of our region and...was active in saving Jews in the Second World War.

reached the TYC - Torino Youth Center - a home to various young people’s associations and an Arci club run by university students (Studenti Indipendenti). At the Officine Corsare you can have a good cheap aperitivo or just a beer and
get to know some young locals. Every evening something different: concerts on Friday, shows, exhibitions on Sunday.

Strolling under the trees, listening to the nearby noises of the city, you’ll meet dogs, old people and joggers. Take a look
around: the Alps in the distance, a bit of the Mole and an enormous rat drawn on the facade of a dull building.
When you get to the second bridge, you’ll come across a little square, which has something of Paris about it (we proud
ourselves that Turin is like a “little Paris”). Some of the buildings in this area still need some renovation but in general
a lot is being done to requalify it and many old factories are being turned into expensive lofts.

Take via Mameli and walk down the narrow streets around there. The street of LUNGO DORA follows the course of
what was a canal of the same name and today is home to antique and second-hand shops and on Saturday it’s flea
market area.(Balôn, see the frontside). If you want an ice-cream, check out the GELATERIA POPOLARE (via Borgo Dora,
closed on Mondays). Continuing down via Borgo Dora, you’ll find the CORTILE DEL MAGLIO, a large courtyard, covered
with a wooden and metal roof - good if it rains - where in the evening there are plenty of cheap bars .The big “weird
mechanism” right in the middle? Industrial past. Just before the bridge over the river Dora is the SERMIG, an old redbrick building which used to be the military arsenal of the Savoy army, but which today is an “arsenal of peace”, a
place where poor people may find help. Cross the iron bridge over the Dora and you’ll see a disused railway crossing
and an old steam engin: again, industrial past.
It’s Turin’s equivalent of the Palace of Versailles. It’s a former home of the Savoy family, and was built
in the 17th century as a hunting lodge and summer residence. And to think that we let it fall into ruin: for
years was used as a military barracks. But now, thanks to a great programme of restoration has returned to its
former glory. And it’s even better than the French one. It’s worth a visit.

o THE WORLD IN A SQUARE
The GALLERIA UMBERTO I, what was once a hospital and now is a charming arcade with little shops, it’s little known
even by locals. It takes you to PIAZZA DELLA REPUBBLICA. also known as PORTA PALAZZO (see frontside). Stick your
nose in the air: this square smells of “commerce”. Indeed, since 1750 it’s a market area which has always welcomed
immigrants, first from Southern Italy, now from the rest of the world, as you can see from the colorful shops and bars
around the square. The Rumanian community is one of the biggest (after the Chinese, the Moroccans and the Africans).
Before moving up, have a look at DA MARCO (under the porticoes of via Milano), an old-fashioned food shop with
Italian products and wines at affordable prices written on big price tags. Have a look at the covered market with the
clock: it is decorated with the phrase “Love difference” written in neon in different languages. Have you ever heard of
“Arte Povera” (Poor Art)? Those neon lights are a permanent installation by PISTOLETTO, one of the most important
exponents of the “Poor Art” artistic movement which formed in Turin in the 60s. [for guided multicultural

Piazza Castello is home to grand palaces, a regal square. But it would take another map to describe all of them. Just an
overview of what you see: PALAZZO REALE, the official residence of the Savoy family until 1865, PALAZZO MADAMA,
previously a castle, prison and Senate house, and the unsual Baroque SAN LORENZO CHURCH which looks like a
residential home instead of a church. But for us it’s more than a touristic square. It’s the heart of the city, a meeting
point where the royal atmosphere mingles with the teens’ break dance on the right side of the TEATRO REGIO and
skaters riding their boards behind the castle.
Go and stand in front of Palazzo Reale. On the left you’ll find a passage that takes you to the CATHEDRAL (DUOMO),
one the very few examples of Renaissance architecture in Turin. Here you’ll find the 17th century chapel (a typical
example of Baroque style) that houses the HOLY SHROUD : the dome is still being restored after the disastrous fire
of 1997. But the Holy Shroud is displayed only on particular occasions. Go past the ugly 1970s building opposite the
Cathedral and you’ll see the PORTE PALATINE, one of the ancient Roman gateways to the city.
