CUNNINGHAM, Ph.D. Department of History, Texas Tech University terrà una conferenza su Cowboy Conservatism. Texas and the Rise of the Modern Right In 1964, nearly one hundred years since the end of the American Civil War, Texas – like all other Southern states – remained fiercely loyal to the Democratic Party. Yet by 1980, Texas was well on its way to becoming the most powerful Republican state in the nation. What happened between 1964 and 1980 to cause this monumental realignment? How does one explain the Lone Star State's transformation from loyally Democratic to staunchly Republican? In this public lecture, Dr. Sean Cunningham, Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University, will attempt to explain the reasons for this shift. Ultimately, Dr. Cunningham finds that partisan realignment in Texas was driven by the Republican Party's masterful ability to invent, manipulate and employ powerful political images in a successful effort to transform the public's perception of what it meant to be a conservative, what it meant to be a liberal, and which political party best represented the values of average Texans.
