Per Kirkeby è, al pari di Richter, Polke, Kiefer, Penck, Immendorff, Lüpertz e Baselitz, uno dei maggiori artisti contemporanei del Nord Europa.
Ancor più, si profila come una delle più straordinarie e
complesse figure del mondo culturale scandinavo del dopoguerra: pittore ma anche geologo, scultore, scrittore,
saggista, poeta, uomo di cinema (celebre la collaborazione con il regista Lars von Trier) e di teatro. Il suo articolato
lavoro è stato oggetto di ampie retrospettive nei principali musei del mondo, dalla Tate Gallery di Londra alla
Phillips Collection di Washington, dal Palais des BeauxArts di Bruxelles all’Arts Club di Chicago, e molte delle
sue opere sono oggi presentate nei più importanti musei
internazionali: Metropolitan e MoMA di New York, Centre Pompidou di Parigi, Louisiana Museum of Art di Copenaghen tra gli altri.
Per Kirkeby is one of the greatest contemporary artists
of northern Europe, on a par with Richter, Polke, Kiefer,
Penck, Immendorff, Lüpertz and Baselitz.
He has also proved to be one of the most extraordinary
and complex figures of the post-war cultural world in
Scandinavia, for he is a painter but also a geologist, a
sculptor, a writer, an essayist, a poet, and a man of the
cinema (he is renowned for his work with director Lars von
Trier) and of the theatre. His diverse works have been the
subject of sweeping retrospectives in the world’s leading
museums, from Tate in London to the Phillips Collection in
Washington, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and
the Arts Club in Chicago. Many of his works are on display
in top international museums, including the Metropolitan
and MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris,
Nato in Danimarca nel 1938, laureatosi in geologia artica, and the Louisiana Museum of Art in Copenhagen.
Per Kirkeby collabora negli anni Sessanta con Beuys, Maciunas e il movimento Fluxus, diviene figura centrale della Born in Denmark in 1938, Per Kirkeby graduated in Arctic

La mostra organizzata al Museo d’arte Mendrisio è la prima importante retrospettiva in area italiana. Ripercorre
l’opera di Per Kirkeby concentrandosi sul periodo della
maturità (1983-2012), essenzialmente rivolto alla pittura.
Oltre 80 opere, tra dipinti, sculture e lavori su carta, di forte impatto emotivo sintetizzano al meglio il suo lavoro,
evolutosi nel tempo in senso lirico-informale. Suggestive
serie di dipinti di grande formato, connotati da un incessante dialogo tra struttura e materia, tenebre e luce, testimoniano un profondo sapere storico artistico e l’intenso
rapporto dell’artista con la natura e i suoi infiniti paesaggi
esplorati durante i moltissimi viaggi.
The exhibition at the Museo d’arte Mendrisio is the first
major retrospective in the Italian-speaking world. It retraces the work of Per Kirkeby with a special focus on his
mature period (1983-2012), mainly devoted to painting.
Over 80 items of great emotional impact, including paintings, sculptures and works on paper, epitomise the best of
his work, which evolved over time in an informal, lyrical
manner. An evocative series of large paintings creates a
constant dialogue between structure and matter, darkness and light, revealing his profound understanding of
art history and his intense relationship with nature and
with the countless landscapes he has explored on innumerable trips.
