For ArtInternational Istanbul Boccanera Gallery presents a solo-project by Nebojša Despotović
(1982), emerging trans-national visual artist, born in Belgrade, educated in Venice and based
in Berlin, who has been predominantly working with the medium of painting.

Extended Family is a semi-fictional narrative or a psychological mind-map
of Despotović’s complex boundary system around which the Boccanera booth is
organically conceptualized in Istanbul. It represents the (common) position of an artist
who is ambivalently committed: on one hand to his nuclear family, on the other hand to
arts. The relation to these «families» is both intellectual and emotional and Despotović
plays on a thin line between them. For him, both of these families have a psychological
meaning in a sense that he is invested in both with feelings and sensations. While
the nuclear family is important for grounding, the family of art is where he can
address his intellectual concerns. The boundaries from his nuclear family have to be
drawn in order to preserve the object of art from daily banality, while the boundaries
of art have to be open even if an artist thrives to create in isolation, especially an
artist committed to painting, a slow process in which the form needs time in order
to evolve. It is exactly art that allows Despotović the freedom of choice. He can
choose between any possible time, form or concept, but he remains embeded in
the process of constantly controlling the borderline between his family duties and
his dedication to the arts.
The artworks presented here are an extended family to his previous paintings.
However, Despotović respects the legacy of painting, as he decides to dig into the
past and to merge the exuberant visual vocabulary of historical painting with his
lavish contemporary approach. Speaking in metaphorical terms, it is as if he makes
his choices around the familiar and adds an individual flair to it. It is as if he is
expanding his private, as well as the general tradition of painting in a way that
he preserves it’s monumentality, while adjusting it to the flatness that stands for
superficiality as one of the main characteristics of our time. While building his
compositions, he is not only using a variety of painterly techniques (oil on canvas,
acrylic on canvas, acrylic on paper), but he also destroys the order and regularity by
contrasting darkness to unusual neon accents.
The project is thus divided into the dark and the bright side. On the bright side
of the project stands a self-confident and proud-spirited artist with intellectual
integrity, where the still lifes represent the subtle link to his daily routine. Details
and fragments are what the artist pools from the family constellation while shoring
up his boundaries and returning to his art. It is the internal tension between
abstraction and figuration that contributes to the highly recognizable atmosphere
of Despotović’s paintings. Because both the nuclear and the extended family in
the paintings are presented in their absence, this project resonates a melancholic
note.

(1982), artista visuale emergente trans-nazionale perché nato a Belgrado, educato a Venezia,
attualmente residente a Berlino e che lavora prevalentemente con il mezzo pittorico.

Extended Family è un racconto semi-immaginario o una mappa mentale psicologica
del complesso sistema di barriere di Despotović attorno al quale si snoda lo stand
di Boccanera ad Istanbul. Questo rappresenta la posizione (comune) di un artista
impegnato su due fronti: da un lato con il suo nucleo familiare e dall’altro con l’arte. La
relazione con queste «famiglie» è sia intellettuale che emozionale e Despotović gioca
sulla sottile linea che vi è tra esse. Per l’artista queste famiglie hanno entrambe un
significato psicologico poiché ne viene coinvolto con i sentimenti e con le sensazioni.
Il nucleo familiare è importante perché basilare e la famiglia dell’arte è dove egli può
indirizzare i suoi interessi intellettuali. I limiti del suo nucleo familiare necessitano di
essere disegnati affinché l’oggetto d’arte venga preservato dalla banalità quotidiana,
mentre le barriere dell’arte necessitano di essere aperte nonostante un artista cresca
per creare in isolamento, specialmente un artista impegnato con la pittura e quindi in
un lento processo in cui la forma ha bisogno del tempo per evolvere. È esattamente
l’arte che permette a Despotović la libertà di scelta. Egli può scegliere tra ogni tempo
possibile, forma o concetto, ma resta incastrato nel processo di controllo costante
del limite tra i suoi doveri familiari e la sua dedizione per l’arte.
Le opere d’arte qui presentate sembrano la famiglia allargata dei suoi precedenti
dipinti. Tuttavia Despotović, rispetta l’eredità poiché decide di scavare nel passato
e di fondere l’esuberante vocabolario visuale della pittura storica con il suo
sfarzoso approccio contemporaneo. Parlando in termini metaforici, è come se
facesse la sua scelta attorno ai familiari e vi aggiungesse uno stile individuale; é
come se espandesse il suo privato ad una generale tradizione di pittura in modo
da preservarne la monumentalità, adattandola alla piattezza, che passa per
superficialità, una delle caratteristiche del nostro tempo. Nella costruzione delle
sue composizioni, Despotović non usa una sola varietà di tecniche pittoriche (olio
su tela, acrilico su tela, acrilico su carta), ma con inusuali accenti neon distrugge
anche l’ordine e la regolarità contrastando l’oscurità.

Il progetto è così diviso in lato oscuro e lato luminoso. Nel lato luminoso del progetto
appare un artista sicuro di sé e coraggioso e con una forte integrità intellettuale,
a differenza delle nature morte che rappresentano il sottile legame con la sua
routine quotidiana. I dettagli e i frammenti sono ciò che l’artista accumula dalla
sua costellazione familiare e, al contempo, sostengono le sue barriere e ritornano
alla sua arte. È la tensione intellettuale tra astrazione e figurazione che contribuisce
a creare l’atmosfera fortemente riconoscibile dei dipinti di Despotović. In questo
progetto di Istanbul risuona una nota malinconica perché sia la famiglia nucleare
che la famiglia allargata sono presenti nella pittura in loro assenza.
