Meccanotecnica Umbra was founded in 1966. Today, it is a multinational producer of mechanical face seals intended for use in automobile manufacturing, household appliances, and a wide range of other industries, including high-performance applications in the chemical, oil, mining, food-product, and renewable-energy industries. In addition to its historic headquarters in Campello sul Clitunno in Italy’s Umbria Region, Meccanotecnica Umbra can also boast of production, technical-support, and sales facilities in Brazil, China, the United States, Mex- ico, India, and Sweden. All our sites are quality-management-system and environmentally certified, a clear statement of our commitment to combining manufacturing efficiency with high quality, safety, and respect for the environment. Since its earliest days, Meccanotecnica Umbra has been intensely engaged in research and development, technological innovation, and attention to quality, as well as in maintaining our company’s competitive edge and global perspective. In each of these areas, our human resources department and managerial team have remained an active and steadfast presence. As a result of these factors, Meccanotecnica Umbra has not only been successful in meeting stiff international competition but is increasing its market share, diversifying its products, and improving its technological proficiency through specialization in the demands of emerging markets La progettazione di nuove soluzioni avviene nei servizi tecnico e ricerca e sviluppo, dotati di sistemi CAD-FEM. Design of new products and components takes place in our engineering and research and development divisions, equipped with CAD-FEM tools. Prototypes created in our dedicated workshops are subjected to further testing and experimentation. The experimental phases of our research and development programs take place in two laboratories and testing rooms with a total area of 2000 square meters and more than a hundred separate evaluation stations. The quality-control system in our headquarters in Italy received its first ISO 9000 certification in 1995 (later continued as ISO/TS 16949). Certification was subsequently extended to all Meccanotecnica Umbra’s other production facilities. In keeping with the requirements of this certification process, Meccanotecnica Umbra’s systems ensure the quality and integrity of incoming materials, authenticate our suppliers, verify our internal manufacturing and production processes, and ensure that all data necessary to allow complete traceability of each production lot are recorded. In 1999, Meccanotecnica Umbra received ISO 14001 certification for its environmental-management system and, in 2007, reached another landmark in the firm’s commitment to social responsibility and environmental protection: participation in the European Union’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) system. Once testing is complete, the seal components are carefully examined with particular attention to surface characteristics and quality. Our experimental division carries out structural analyses of individual and pump-mounted seals, either during internal quality control procedures or as part of testing programs coordinated with our clients. For each sector in which our products will be employed, we use dedicated workbenches to carry out noise-level and endurance testing under critical conditions (high vibration and fluid infiltration, for example) that simulate actual use. Meccanotecnica Umbra also relies on partnerships with outside universities and research institutions to carry out our research and development programs. Although it is composed of a complex group of components, a front seal carries out its actual sealing action between two rings (called “primary retainer rings”) that are in relative motion to each other. One of these rings rotates together with the shaft, whereas the other one remains stationary and is an integral part of the casing (or the gate). During rotation, the sealing surface of the rotating ring slides along the matching surface of the fixed ring. Thus, any loss must pass through this contact surface. Compressive force, which can be obtained either mechanically or hydraulically, is necessary in order to establish and maintain continuous contact between the rings. During operation, the seal must be able to withstand predetermined operating conditions without any loss, and one of these conditions is fluid pressure. This pressure can be used to increase the contact force with which the rotating ring presses against the fixed ring. If this pressure is utilized completely, the seal is said to be unbalanced or uncompensated. The following examples will help clarify this concept. Figura 1. Unbalanced seal in which the fluid pressure contributes totally to pushing ring 1 against ring 2. Figura 2. If the hydraulic thrust surface is less than the contact surface, then we have a balanced seal. Il “Rapporto di bilanciamento” è definito dalla relazione seguente: The “Balancing ratio” is established by the following relationship: b = ( superficie di spinta idr. If the value of b decreases, the risk of thermal overload is also reduced, but there is an increased risk of detachment between the tracks. We have said that in addition to the spring pressure, Pm, fluid pressure Ph also contributes to the total pressure that actually acts upon the contact surface: Pt = Ph + Pm The following relationship is considered valid when calculating fluid pressure: Ph = ∆P (b-k) With ∆P being the difference in pressure between the inside (fluid pressure) and the outside (usually atmospheric pressure). The coefficient k takes into consideration thefact that the distribution of pressure between the tracks has either a linear pattern (K= 0.5) or a convex pattern (K > 0.5). It is immediately obvious that when both the balancing ratio and coefficient K are equivalent to 0.5, the contribution given by hydraulic force is nullified. Thus, the seal is loaded only by the spring. Friction and wear are the factors that have the greatest influence on seal characteristics and life. These phenomena are closely interrelated and the effect they exert involves alteration of the sliding surfaces, resulting in varying degrees of damage. Friction can be described as the resistance developed by material with respect to sliding contact. The value of the coefficient of sliding friction f depends on the type of material comprising the sliding surfaces, as well as on the fluid itself. For calculation purposes, a value of f = 0.08 is generally used. With the formation of a hydrodynamic film when going from a state of dry friction to fluid friction, this value can decrease considerably. The sliding surfaces can undergo abrasive wear caused by the roughness of the contact surfaces. This phenomenon is defined as “the scraping of one solid body by another”. Adhesion can be described as the transfer of a particle from one part of the contact surface to another and it can thus be defined as the interaction of two solid bodies in contact. This interaction takes place under certain conditions, generally with the contribution of heat. When there is a corrosive atmosphere near the contact surface, adhesive wear and abrasive wear facilitate surface reactions. Chemical corrosion can be beneficial when there are oxides present that form a superficial protective layer on thesliding surface, whereas very hard oxides can act instead as an abrasive. Sliding contact generates heat that facilitates and accelerates the elastic deformation of the surface. This gives way to thermal stress that overlaps any relaxation phenomena of the internal stress of the solid bodies, which in turn provokes surface stress phenomena. Pressure, composition, lubricating capacity of the fluid and duration of exposition are all factors of primary importance that can affect behavior in relation to wear on the sliding surfaces. Another important factor is the lubrication of the contact surfaces and the way in which this lubrication is carried out: full film lubrication, mixed lubrication, boundary lubrication or dry sliding. The term “carbon - graphite” or more simply, “carbon”, is used for a wide range of carbonaceous materials that are generally used for one of the two retainers. 1) good lubricating capacity even under conditions of boundary friction or dry friction 2) tendency to mitigate and fill in small imperfections in the sliding track 3) good chemical strength 4) good resistance to temperature, going from ultralow temperatures to 250 °C. This upper limit can be raised to 350 °C through the use of several metallic carbons and up to 450 °C with electrographite - type carbons 5) adequate compression resistance 6) low production cost Svantaggi - Disadvantages 1) bassa tolleranza alla presenza di abrasivi 2) possibilità di attacchi chimici al carbone all’impregnante o a entrambi, da parte di forti agenti ossidanti (nitrati, clorati, etc.) 3) rigidezza più bassa e maggiore tendenza alla distorsione alle alte temperature rispetto ai metalli e ai ceramici. 4) alcune applicazioni industriali possono non tollerare la presenza di polvere di carbone 5) bassa resistenza alla trazione 6) il prodotto finito deve essere maneggiato con una certa cautela 7) bassa conducibilità termica (per alcuni tipi) 1) low tolerance in the presence of abrasives 2) strong oxidizing agents (nitrates, chlorates, etc.) can chemically attack the carbon and/or impregnator 3) decreased rigidity and greater tendency to warp at high temperatures, as compared to metals and ceramics 4) several industrial applications cannot tolerate the presence of carbon powder 5) low tensile strength 6) the finished product must be handled with care 7) low thermal conductivity (for several types) Controfacce - Counterfaces L’attitudine ad accoppiarsi con un’ampia gamma di controfacce, giustifica la diffusione del carbone come materiale da tenuta Carbon’s ready tendency to be coupled with a wide variety of counterfaces justifies its widespread use as a seal component. While PTFE’s good self - lubricating properties have often been a basic factor in making it preferable over other materials, its tendency to warp permanently under certain conditions has greatly limited its use. 1) it warps easily and, even when reinforced with fiberglass, its mechanical characteristics are not as good as those offered by carbon 2) despite PTFE’s noteworthy self - lubricating characteristics, its operation is less than perfect under boundary lubrication conditions and in fact, the high temperatures that are generated can cause considerable warping and lead rapidly to fault conditions 3) limited use in the presence of abrasives 4) low thermal conductivity 5) relatively expensive Controfacce - Counterfaces il PTFE è usualmente utilizzato contro un’allumina. PTFE is usually used against alumina. This coupling is highly resistant to a wide range of liquids, including liquids that attack carbon. Nevertheless, this application has remained limited due to the low thermal conductivity of both materials. This material is composed of very hard carbon particles alloyed with a ductile metal. It is used in particularly harsh conditions (in terms of PV). Despite the fact that it is the most costly of all the materials we have examined so far, it is often used because it offers various advantages in terms of seal performance and life. Vantaggi - Advantages 1) buone capacità di resistenza all’usura anche in condizioni di lavoro particolarmente gravose 2) alta conducibilità termica 3) elevato modulo elastico e perciò minore tendenza rispetto ai materiali metallici a deformarsi sotto pressione 4) migliore resistenza agli shock meccanici rispetto agli altri materiali non metallici duri 1) highly wear - resistant even under particularly harsh working conditions 2) excellent thermal conductivity 3) high tensile modulus and thus less tendency to warp under pressure as compared with other metals 4) better resistance to mechanical shock than other hard non metallic materials Svantaggi - Disadvantages 1) limitata resistenza chimica, particolarmente in ambiente acido 2) densità del rnateriale elevata, fatto che può compromettere le prestazioni del materiale alle alte velocità di rotazione 3) limitate capacità di resistere in funzionamento a secco o con lubrificazione limite in caso di accoppiamento carburo-carburo 4) alto costo del materiale grezzo 1) limited chemical resistance, particularly in acid environments 2) high density, which can compromise the performance of this material at high rotational speeds 3) limited resistance capacity in dry operating conditions or with boundary lubrication in carbide - carbide coupling 4) high cost of raw material Controfacce - Counterfaces Essendo impiegato in presenza di liquidi abrasivi viene accoppiato generalmente con se stesso o con l’allumina. Since it is used in the presence of abrasive liquids, it is generally coupled either with itself or with alumina. Given the fact that in these cases it has a very low dry - operation tolerance, it is increasingly being replaced with silicon carbide. Commonly referred to as “alumina”, this was one of the first “hard” non - metallic materials to be used in mechanical seals. 1) it is one of the most economical hard materials and offers excellent resistance to wear 2) it has excellent chemical resistance properties that depend on the degree of purity 3) in water or aqueous solutions, it has excellent properties when carbon is used as a counterface. It also offer good resistance in the presence of abrasive solutions Svantaggi - Disadvantages 1) scarsa conducibilità termica, dissipa poco calore in condizioni critiche 2) resistenza allo shock termico soddisfacente soltanto con particolari tipi di carbone. Ia resistenza allo shock termico viene aumentata relativamente ricorrendo a una opportuna additivazione 3) materiale fragile soggetto in talune condizioni a danni meccanici 1) low thermal conductivity: it dissipates very little heat under critical conditions 2) adequate resistance to thermal shock only with particular types of carbon. This can cause problems under transitory operating conditions. Its thermal shock resistance can be increased somewhat through the use of special additives 3) it is a fragile material that is subject to mechanical damage under certain conditions Controfacce - Counterfaces L’allumina viene in genere accoppiata con vari tipi di carbone o con PTFE, quest’ultimo accoppiamento viene usato in condizioni altamente corrosive. Alumina is general coupled with various types of carbon or with PTFE. The latter coupling is used for highly corrosive conditions. The application of silicon carbide particularly the sintered type is becoming more and more widespread, not only for critical applications but also because even in more normal cases, its good performance - price ratio has helped make it the preferred material. 1) lower impact strength than tungsten carbide 2) low stress resistance 3) requires special attention in selecting couplings. In fact, the wrong choice can lead to great generation of heat and thus to possible vaporization of the fluid interface film, thus inevitably damaging the seal. Research is being done on special additives that can be used with silicon carbide in order to improve its behavior under reduced lubrication conditions Controfacce - Counterfaces Carburo di silicio con carbone è una combinazione che assicura una lunga vita alla tenuta in un’ampia varietà di condizioni, poichè presenta un’eccellente resistenza allo shock termico, ai transitori e alle condizioni limite. Silicon carbide with carbon is a combination that can ensure long seal life under a wide variety of conditions, since it offers excellent resistance to thermal shock, transients and to boundary conditions. Instead, the silicon carbide - silicon carbide combination is generally used when high wear - resistance characteristics are required.
