en Europe, fut tout d’abord utilisé uniquement
dans les églises, les bibliothèques, au sein des
édifices gouvernementaux ou utilisés à des fins
commerciales. Le terme, qui signifie "terrasse"
ou "battu", dérive de la tradition des artisans
vénitiens qui utilisaient les chutes de marbre dans
la réalisation des sols pour les terrasses. En raison
de l’utilisation de la chaux pour lier ces fragments,
la consistance présentée par les sols obtenus à
l’aide de cette technique était tellement grossière
qu’il était nécessaire d’effectuer des interventions
de polissage manuel pour obtenir une surface lisse
et uniforme.

bedeutet “Terrasse“ – der Name entstand, da
venezianische Bauarbeiter zerbrochene Reste
von Marmor verwendeten, um Böden für eben
diese Terrassen zu schaffen. Da diese Bruchstücke
in Lehm eingesetzt wurden, war die Konsistenz
natürlich grob, so dass die Männer die Oberfläche
per Hand abschliffen bis ein glatterer,
flacherer Boden entstand.
the "Venetian terrazzo", which reached its
maximum splendour in Europe starting from the
15th century, was initially used only in churches,
libraries, government buildings or commercial
spaces. The word, which means “terrace” or
“beaten”, stems from the Venetian artisanal
tradition of using marble scraps to make terrace
floorings. Lime served as a binding agent and
therefore the floorings obtained using this
technique appeared unrefined and several stages
of manual polishing were necessary to obtain a
smooth and uniform surface.

il suo massimo splendore a partire dal XV secolo
in Europa, venne impiegato inizialmente solo nelle
chiese, nelle biblioteche, all’interno degli edifici
governativi oppure adibiti a uso commerciale.
Il termine “terrazzo” o “battuto” deriva appunto
dalla tradizione degli artigiani veneziani di
utilizzare gli scarti di marmo nella realizzazione
delle pavimentazioni per i terrazzi. Per via dell’uso
della calce quale legante di tali frammenti, la
consistenza presentata dai pavimenti ottenuti con
questa tecnica era talmente grossolana da dover
richiedere interventi di levigatura manuale per
ottenere una superficie liscia e uniforme.
