Cara patria, già madre e reina

“Dear homeland, once mother and queen of powerful, generous sons, now a ruin, a desert, a
desolation, over which reign silence and gloom; but from the seaweed of these billows, like a new
phoenix arisen, thou shall live again more proud and more lovely, the wonder of the land and sea!”
The melting aria “Cara Patria”, from the opera “Attila” by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle
Solera (1846), is a civic lament and a prophecy of rebirth for a paradigmatic ancient Roman regional
metropolis which was exemplarily destroyed by the Barbarian invasions. This legendary cosmopolitan local
capital was Aquileia, at the head of the Adriatic, in today’s Friuli Venezia Giulia, the only region in the world
named after the precursor of the historical Roman empire, Gaius Julius Caesar. Now, on the 18th centenary of
the universal grant of the ancient Roman citizenship (Constitutio Antoniniana, AD 212), two Friulian popular
organizations, the Alpine-Adriatic Cultural Civic Movement “Fogolâr Civic” and the Friulian University Club
“Academie dal Friûl”, supported by many local citizens and associations, first of all by the UNESCO Club of
Udine, propose to the civil society and institutions of all the ancient Roman empire’s territories this operatic
aria as an ideal common Euro-Mediterranean anthem, remembering not an ancient imperialist civilization but
a great historical precedent of an intercontinental manifold homeland.
