honoured as "Town of the Year
2013-2014".

not attend, was the President of
his Council, Marino Fardelli.
As always, it was wonderful to
see the members come together
to celebrate our great Club! We
honoured the 25 year pin
recipients and this year, there
were 39 names on that list.
Seven scholarships were also
proudly presented with the
continued effort of three local
supporters... Fazio & Giorgi,
LLP, Paul Maini, C.A and RBC Royal Bank. Congratulations to Ashley

Paese storico della Ciociaria: CASSINO
Sino al 1871 chiamata San Germano, la città ereditò il nome attuale
dall’antica città osca, confederata con i Sanniti, Cascum. Nel 312 a.C.
Casinum divenne colonia romana e nel periodo repubblicano e del
primo Impero fu centro militare e commerciale di particolare
rilevanza, quando fu anche ben descritta da Marco Terenzio Varrone,
da Plinio il Vecchio e da Strabone. Nel 529 Benedetto da Norcia, dopo
aver trascorso tre anni in totale solitudine a Subiaco, fondò qui
l’abbazia di Montecassino, importantissimo centro di cultura e di
diffusione del monachesimo occidentale. Cassino, completamente
distrutta nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, e’ perciò detta la
“Città Martire”, è stata ricostruita subito dopo secondo moderni criteri
urbanistici, e conserva la dolorosa testimonianza dell’evento con i
cimiteri militari polacco, inglese, tedesco e italiano, dove riposano più
di 30.000 soldati. Sopravvissute alla guerra, tracce dell’epoca
imperiale romana si trovano nella zona archeologica. Tra queste i resti
dell’Anfiteatro e il Sepolcro di Ummidia Quadratilla (sec. I d.C.), il
Teatro di età augustea, ancora oggi efficiente, e le Terme Varroniane,
cosi denominate poiché costruite sulle rovine della villa che Marco
Terenzio Varrone vi si era fatta edificare. Del periodo delle lotte fra
Impero e Papato è la Rocca Janule, originariamente costruita
dall’abate Aligerno nel X sec., divenuta poi fortezza a guardia di tutta
la piana sottostante. Cassino si fa custode, inoltre, del primo
documento della lingua italiana e della più antica formula di
testimonianza giuridica in difesa dei “diritti reali”: la “Magna Carta”
cassinese (sec. X).
Up until 1871, Cassino was identified as San Germano, then the town
inherited its current name from Oscan Cascum, confederated with the
Samnites. In 312 B.C., Casinum became a Roman colony. During the
republican and imperial periods, it was a military and commercial
center of particular relevance. Marcus Terentius Varro, C. Plinius and
Strabo wrote about it. In 529 Benedict of Norcia, after spending three
years in total reclusion in Subiaco, founded the Abbey of
Montecassino, a center of great cultural importance, which was
responsible for the diffusion of monasticism in the west. Cassino,
scene of one of the worst battles of the Second World War, was
completely destroyed and since then bears the name of “martyred
town”; it was rebuilt soon after the war following modern
urbanistic standards, though the town conserves painful testimony
of that tragic event with its moving Polish, British, German and
Italian war cemeteries in which rest more than 30,000 soldiers.
Surviving the destruction, traces of the Roman imperial era are
within the archeological zone, which includes the Amphitheatre
and the Sepulchre of Ummidia Quadratilla (1st cent. A.D.), a
Theatre belonging to the Augustian age, and the Varronian thermal
baths, named “Varroniane” because they were built on the ruins of
Marcus Terentius Varro’s villa. The Rocca Janula dates to the
period of the wars between the Empire and Papacy; the fortress was
built by Abot Aligerno in the 10th cent. for the defence of the whole
plain surrounding Cassino. The town also conserves the Cassinese
“Magna Charta” (10th cent.), the first document in the Italian
language and also the oldest judicial document in defence of real
rights.

GROUP PASTA NIGHT
This past March 16, 2013, marked twenty years since
the Serata Paesana Banquet had its beginning. As
always the banquet was a great success with close to
600 guests filling the hall.
THE CIOCIARO CLUB FOLKLORE DANCE GROUP WILL
BE HOSTING A FUNDRAISING PASTA NIGHT AT THE
CIOCIARO CLUB ON THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2013. DOORS

As usual, Andrea Roma, our TALENTED chef,
prepared his delicious meal and the wonderful band
“City Lights” played beautiful music and everyone
danced the night away.
Three new members have joined the committee this
year, Susan and Mary Anne Del Greco, as well as
Teresa Di Domenico. We warmly welcome them to
the committee!
The committee would like to thank all of our loyal

SPORTS BOOK
Rocco Muscedere is putting together a book looking
back at 40 years of amateur sports at the Ciociaro Club.
A minimum of two thousand (2000) copies will be
printed and distributed free to those participating in Club
sports, to any members, and then will be available at the
office. We hope to raise the cost of this book by the
advertisements placed in the book by sponsors.
Any businesses or sponsors wishing to advertise or place
an ad and participate in this venture with us, please call
Rocco for more information at 519-999-0240.
I would like to organize some tours
by bus for one or two day
excursions to Sanctuaries or other
destinations. This can be achieved
if there are enough people to fill a
bus. Interested parties can call the
Club and leave me a message.

CIOCIARO SOCCER
The year 2013 has once again brought to the Club another soccer
season. This year, there have been many enhancements to the
Club. In addition to the 400 House League players and the Friday
Night Men’s League, we have grown to 17 Competitive Teams
playing in the Windsor and District League. This is a growth from
the 4 Teams just 5 years ago.
In addition, the Club has instituted rigorous standards and policies
to enforce, promote and foster the highest quality training that any
youth can obtain in Essex County. The Ciociaro Soccer Club is
now recognized by the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA), as one
of the leading clubs in Ontario; so much so, that the Club has been
awarded two rounds of the prestigious Ontario Cup, the largest
competition of its kind, and one of the oldest sporting events in
Canada, having started in 1901. The Ciociaro Soccer Club is being
represented by two of its teams in this competition, the 2000 Boys
on May 24-26, and the 1997 Boys on July 6-7. Teams from
Mississauga, North York, Niagara Falls and Etobicoke will visit
our Club in the hopes of advancing to Ottawa or Mississauga for

their next round. On May 25th, the President of the Ontario Soccer
Association is scheduled to speak at a Ciociaro banquet being held
for the Ontario Cup. This will be a great opportunity for soccer fans
to come to the Club and watch some of the best teams in Ontario
play right here on our grounds.
The Club is also pleased to announce that two of our coaches, Jason
Mastrogiacomo and Marcello Pizzuti have been awarded the
prestigious “pre-b” designation which identifies them as some of
the best coaches in the area.
So the Club will be busy once again this summer, as children from
the ages of 4 to 17 swarm our Club with infectious laughter, joy and
playful smiles. Soccer can bring out the happiness in all of us,
whether it’s your son, granddaughter or just a random group of
children seeing them at our Club and enjoying a pizza and a drink
afterward. It is truly a great reward for all the hard work that all the
volunteers put in. The Ciociaro Soccer Club wishes to truly thank
everyone who volunteers their time and energy for all these
children.

CIOCIARIA: A HERITAGE OF WHICH YOU SHOULD BE PROUD!
Enrico Toti
Enrico Toti – ciclista, patriota ed
eroe della Prima Guerra Mondiale —
nato a Roma il 20 agosto 1882 da
genitori
cassinesi.
Morì
a
Monfalcone il 6 agosto 1916.
Perdette la sua intera gamba sinistra
all’eta’ di 24 anni, a causa di un
incidente
sul
lavoro.
Dopo
l’incidente decise di darsi al
ciclismo. Nel 1911, in bicicletta, si
reco’ a Parigi, quindi attraverso’ il Belgio, l’Olanda e la Danimarca, su in Finlandia (e
Lapponia) e attraverso la Russia e la Polonia, torno’ in Italia nel giugno del 1912. Nel
gennaio del 1913, riprese con il ciclismo, questa volta in Egitto e partendo da
Alessandria raggiunse il confine con il Sudan, ove gli inglesi, per motivi di sicurezza,
gli impedirono il passaggio e lo costrinsero a tornare in Italia, via Cairo. Quando
scoppio’ la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Toti cerco’ il volontariato con l’esercito
italiano, ma non fu accettato a causa del suo infortunio. Impassibile, raggiunse
ugualmente il fronte con la sua bicicletta e riuscì a servire, senza ricompensa, non
iscritto e completamente contro i regolamenti, come “volontario civile” legato a
parecchi gruppi militari. Costretto a tornare a casa dalla polizia militare a causa del
suo infortunio, Toti ostinatamente torno’ al fronte e finalmente riuscì, non
ufficialmente, ad unirsi ai ciclisti del terzo battaglione dei bersaglieri.
Sfortunatamente, egli perdette la vita durante la Sesta Battaglia dell’Isonzo.
Mortalmente ferito, scagliò la sua stambella verso il nemico. Dopo la morte, gli fu
assegnata la Medaglia d’Oro al Valore Militare (in Italia, la medaglia di piu’ alto
valore), uno dei pochissimi civili riceventi di questo prestigiosissimo premio.

ESECUZIONE
Soffriggere la cipolla in un po’d’olio e
farla rosolare con pancetta e funghi.
Aggiungere il pomodoro e proseguire
fino a meta’ cottura. A questo punto unire
i piselli e, a cottura ultima, la panna.
Mantecarvi le fettuccine e servire ben
caldo.

Enrico lost his left leg while working for the Italian railways, at the age of 24. After
his injury he became a cyclist. In 1911, riding on a bicycle with one leg, he cycled to
Paris, and then through Belgium, Holland and Denmark, up to Finland and Lapland.
From there, via Russia and Poland, he returned to Italy in June 1912. In January 1913
Toti started cycling again, this time in Egypt. From Alexandria, he reached the border
with Sudan where the English authorities, considering the trail too dangerous, ordered
him to end the journey, and sent him to Cairo, from where he came back to Italy.
When war broke out between Italy and the Austrian Empire, Toti tried to volunteer for
the Italian army but was not accepted due to his injury. Undaunted, he reached the
frontline with his bicycle and managed to serve as an unpaid, unregistered, fully nonregulation “civilian volunteer” attached to several units. Forced to leave the combat
zone and return home by the Carabinieri (Military Police), Toti stubbornly returned to
the front and finally managed to join (still unofficially) the 3rd Bersaglieri Bicycle
Battalion. He was killed in the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo. Fatally wounded in a clash,
he hurled his crutch at the enemy. He was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of
Military Valour (Italy’s highest award for valour), one of the relatively few civilians
to have this honour bestowed on them.

Fry the onion in a little olive oil and let
brown with the pancetta and mushrooms.
Add the tomato and basil and continue to
cook half way. At this point add the peas
and at the last moment add the cream.
Prepare the fettuccine and serve hot.
Enrico Toti – born, 20 August, 1882 in Rome, from Cassinesi parents – deceased, 6
August, 1916 in Monfalcone, was an Italian cyclist, patriot and hero of World War I.
